The Nightmare Continues — Gold Plunges Below $1700 Fed easing provides no relief. Read more: www.businessinsider.com/gold-falls-be...
Federal Reserve ups its money printing for 2013, good for oil, gold and silver priceswww.arabianmoney.net/gold-silver/2012...
South Africa Rand eyes gold refining plant in China Reuters reported that the world's biggest gold refiner, South Africa's Rand Refinery is considering setting up a refining plant in China within 2 to 3 years joining hands with a local partner on its first such plant abroad. A senior executive said that Rand is targeting Asia, home to the world's top two gold consumers, China and India, as a key region for future development. It expects to complete a sampling and assaying facility in Singapore by the end of the year. Mr Peter Bouwer chief strategy officer at Rand said that "During the past year, we have identified one or two possible opportunities to partner for a potential initial refinery footprint in China." He said that the plan was at a very early stage. The lack of high purity gold refining capacity in China poses an opportunity for Rand. China already has huge refining capacity, both in a handful of large scale refiners listed with the LBMA and a huge number of small or micro scale refiners. The challenge facing especially the smaller refineries is the technology and experience to produce high purity gold, e.g. 999.9%. High purity gold is keenly sought for use in jewellery, which accounted for two thirds of China's gold demand in the first 9 months of this year. Source – Reuters
Gold inches up as Fed seen to stay accommodative BS reported that gold inched up on Monday as a drop in the US unemployment rate did little to dampen expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain easy monetary policy when it meets later this week. Investors are watching progress in the US fiscal talks and potential political uproar in Italy which could jolt the market where liquidity is starting to thin as traders close books before the end of the year. The slow improvement in the US job market and prospects for more cash printing by the Federal Reserve kept sentiment buoyant in gold, which has risen about 9% this year, mostly on the Fed's stimulus measures. Investors await a US Federal Reserve policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday after which the central bank is expected to announce fresh bond purchases of USD 45 billion a month to replace Operation Twist, the Fed's program of buying longer-dated bonds with sale proceeds from shorter date holdings due to expire at the end of the year. Mr Lynette Tan an analyst at Philip Futures in Singapore said that "Market expectation is that there could be more quantitative easing towards the end of the month, and this will be supportive of gold. But gold was likely to remain trapped in a range between USD 1,680 and USD 1,750 an ounce as many investors have moved to the sidelines watching the progress of talks in Washington to avert the fiscal cliff USD 600 billion worth of tax hikes and spending cuts due to kick off next year that is feared would trigger another recession. A Singapore based trader said that if the Fed shows reluctance to continue purchases of mortgage-backed securities on improving economic outlook, gold will sell off but I'd say that's maybe a 10% chance. Data from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed that hedge fund and money managers cut their bullish bets on US gold last week to the lowest level since late August and also reduced silver longs. But some investors continued to pile into gold-backed exchange traded funds. Holdings of gold ETFs hit a record high of 76.129 million ounces on December 7, despite stagnant gold prices in recent weeks. Weaker than expected exports growth in China offset the optimism on the recovery of the world's second large economy brought a set of upbeat data over the weekend, signalling slow recovery. But improving vehicle market in China is likely to provide some help for platinum group metals, used in producing exhaust-reducing autocatalysts. Source – Business Standard.com
Hong Kong Oct gold flow to China falls to 10 month low Hong Kong's gold shipments to mainland China slid more than 30% on the month to 47.478 tonnes in October the lowest since February. Data from the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department showed the net gold flow in the first ten months of the year, however, exceeded the total for 2011, suggesting robust appetite for gold in the country that is vying with India to be the world's top gold consumer. The sharp drop in gold exports from Hong Kong did not surprise traders, who said business was slow in October. A Singapore based trader said that "October's market was not great. Prices were high and China's buying interest was low. Some importers stocked up in September in preparation for a weeklong holiday at the beginning of October, which also contributed to the dramatic fall in October exports to China. Net gold flow to China in October dropped to 24.9 tonnes its lowest since June 2011 with gold shipments from China edging down on the month to 22.536 tonnes. The average price for spot gold stood at USD 1,744 an ounce in October, similar to USD 1,745 in September but more than USD 100 higher than August's average price at USD 1,630. Mr Nick Trevethan senior commodity strategist at ANZ in Singapore said that "Prices were falling in October, and perhaps people were waiting for better opportunities to acquire physical material." Strikes hit South Africa Oct gold output hard Reuters reported that South Africa's gold output nearly halved in October from the same period last year highlighting the impact of a wave of wildcat strikes that swept the sector. Data showed that gold production in South Africa has sharply declined in the last seven years knocking Africa's biggest economy off its perch as the world's top bullion producer, a position it held throughout most of the 20th century. Statistics South Africa data showed that gold production fell by 45.7% in volume in October with total mineral production 7.7% lower compared with the same month last year. Production of platinum group metals rose 17.6% after falling almost 18% in September because of labour unrest. South Africa's gold and platinum producers were rocked this year by illegal strikes that resulted in over 50 people being killed adding to the woes of an industry already battling with rising power and other costs and difficult depths. The first possibility is that big financial players are short in gold, and cannot afford a higher price. Option two is that a coordinated effort by banks or central banks is keeping the price of precious metals systematically low in order to keep open the path towards inflation and currency devaluation as a way out of the current financial crisis.www.cdfund.com/en/blog-eng/gold-manip...
