ArcelorMittal S.A.'s (AMS:MT) largest shareholders are private companies with 41% ownership, individual investors own 33% Tue, April 11, 2023 at 2:44 PM GMT+2·4 min read Recommendation Rating Buy Key Insights Significant control over ArcelorMittal by private companies implies that the general public has more power to influence management and governance-related decisions 46% of the business is held by the top 25 shareholders 26% of ArcelorMittal is held by Institutions To get a sense of who is truly in control of ArcelorMittal S.A. (AMS:MT), it is important to understand the ownership structure of the business. And the group that holds the biggest piece of the pie are private companies with 41% ownership. Put another way, the group faces the maximum upside potential (or downside risk). And individual investors on the other hand have a 33% ownership in the company. Let's take a closer look to see what the different types of shareholders can tell us about ArcelorMittal. What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About ArcelorMittal? Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices. ArcelorMittal already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. When multiple institutions own a stock, there's always a risk that they are in a 'crowded trade'. When such a trade goes wrong, multiple parties may compete to sell stock fast. This risk is higher in a company without a history of growth. You can see ArcelorMittal's historic earnings and revenue below, but keep in mind there's always more to the story. ArcelorMittal is not owned by hedge funds. Grandel Limited is currently the company's largest shareholder with 41% of shares outstanding. Meanwhile, the second and third largest shareholders, hold 1.2% and 0.3%, of the shares outstanding, respectively. A deeper look at our ownership data shows that the top 25 shareholders collectively hold less than half of the register, suggesting a large group of small holders where no single shareholder has a majority. While studying institutional ownership for a company can add value to your research, it is also a good practice to research analyst recommendations to get a deeper understand of a stock's expected performance. There are a reasonable number of analysts covering the stock, so it might be useful to find out their aggregate view on the future. Insider Ownership Of ArcelorMittal While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. The company management answer to the board and the latter should represent the interests of shareholders. Notably, sometimes top-level managers are on the board themselves. Insider ownership is positive when it signals leadership are thinking like the true owners of the company. However, high insider ownership can also give immense power to a small group within the company. This can be negative in some circumstances. Our most recent data indicates that insiders own less than 1% of ArcelorMittal S.A.. We do note, however, it is possible insiders have an indirect interest through a private company or other corporate structure. Being so large, we would not expect insiders to own a large proportion of the stock. Collectively, they own €21m of stock. It is always good to see at least some insider ownership, but it might be worth checking if those insiders have been selling. General Public Ownership The general public-- including retail investors -- own 33% stake in the company, and hence can't easily be ignored. While this size of ownership may not be enough to sway a policy decision in their favour, they can still make a collective impact on company policies. Private Company Ownership It seems that Private Companies own 41%, of the ArcelorMittal stock. Private companies may be related parties. Sometimes insiders have an interest in a public company through a holding in a private company, rather than in their own capacity as an individual. While it's hard to draw any broad stroke conclusions, it is worth noting as an area for further research. Next Steps: It's always worth thinking about the different groups who own shares in a company. But to understand ArcelorMittal better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for ArcelorMittal you should be aware of, and 1 of them makes us a bit uncomfortable. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink. Luckily, you can check this free report showing analyst forecasts for its future.finance.yahoo.com/news/arcelormittal-...

AM/NS India Join Forces with IBM to Drive Cloud Powered Transformation AM/NS India has joined forces with IBM Consulting to revamp mission-critical processes and drive digital transformation. The partnership aims to increase agility and efficiency while achieving scalability and flexibility to support growth. AM/NS India, which is an integrated flat steel manufacturer with over 600 steel grades and serves multiple industries, recognizes the efficacy of digital solutions in the steel industry. As part of the collaboration, IBM Consulting has migrated existing data and applications into a single SAP S/4HANA instance using its IBM Rapid Move for SAP S/4HANA approach. The change management approach resolved several business-critical pain points. Mr. Amit Harlalka, CFO of AM/NS India, said that the collaboration aims to build a Digital Core Platform for AM/NS India to provide the necessary financial transparency and operational agility to chart the next crucial phase of growth.
ArcelorMittal Duisburg Presents Green Transformation Plan ArcelorMittal Duisburg, a steelworks located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, recently received a visit from the state's Minister of Economic Affairs & Climate Protection, Ms. Mona Neubaur, to discuss the site's planned transformation to climate-neutral steel production. Accompanied by Green MP Mr. Felix Banaszak, Ms. Neubaur met with representatives of ArcelorMittal, the works council, and the branch office of IGMetall in Düsseldorf to discuss the decarbonisation plan, which will require significant investment and the expansion of the electricity infrastructure on site. The company has applied for funding from the Federal Government, which must be approved by the EU Commission before it can move forward with the ambitious transformation plan. In support of the decarbonisation plan, Minister Ms. Neubaur stated that North Rhine-Westphalia aims to become Europe's first climate-neutral industrial region and that the steel industry, as a key industry with over 45,000 employees in the state, plays a significant role in achieving this goal. Green MP Mr. Felix Banaszak stressed the importance of producing climate-neutral steel in Duisburg as soon as possible to secure jobs in the region and strengthen the industrial location. He also called for an active European industrial policy that ensures faster and leaner approval and state aid procedures. ArcelorMittal Duisburg has been producing steel for over 150 years and currently processes around one million metric tons of steel for use in the automotive, mechanical engineering, and rail technology industries. To achieve its goal of climate-neutral steel production, the company plans to use green electricity and change its production method, which will require high investment costs in an electric arc furnace. Mr. Paul Tetteroo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Duisburg, emphasized the importance of financial support for the company's ambitious plan, as they cannot bear the cost alone in international competition.

Siemens Gamesa to Supply Wind Turbines to AM Green Energy Siemens Gamesa, a leading renewable energy company, has signed a supply agreement with ArcelorMittal subsidiary, AM Green Energy, to provide 46 SG 3.6-145 wind turbines for a 166MW project in Andhra Pradesh, India. The wind farm is part of a larger 989MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project by AMGEPL in the Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. The deal will help AM/NS India, a steel plant located in Gujarat, meet 20% of its electricity needs from renewable resources and reduce its carbon emissions by 1.5 million metric tons annually. Mr. Amit Harlalka, Vice President, ArcelorMittal and CFO, AM/NS India, commented, "Our partnership with Siemens Gamesa for this benchmark model project demonstrates how establishing partnerships and collaborating across the supply chain can help us progress faster toward our decarbonization targets.” Siemens Gamesa will manufacture the turbines at its plants in India, and the supply will begin in the second quarter of 2023. This deal marks an important milestone for the company’s onshore 3.X platform, with order entry surpassing 1.5GW, and reinforces its competitiveness in the Indian market. Andhra Pradesh, where the project is located, has significant potential for power generation through wind projects. This project is in line with the state government’s Renewable Energy Export Policy 2020 for solar, wind, and hybrid projects, which aims to promote the export of renewable energy outside the state.
Spain Approves Support for ArcelorMittal’s Green Transformation Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal’s Asturias plant in Spain is set to receive €450 million in funding from Spain's Council of Ministers. The funding was also approved by the European Commission in February 2023. The project aims to decarbonize steel production by constructing a renewable hydrogen-based direct reduced iron plant with an annual capacity of 2.3 million metric tons. The plant will replace the two blast furnaces currently used in steel production and is expected to start operating by the end of 2025. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 70.9 million metric tons. This initiative is fully aligned with Spain's objectives to meet its climate change commitments,” said Ms. Nadia Calviño, Spain's Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. The funding will support the country’s efforts to achieve its climate goals and reduce carbon emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. The project is expected to set an example for other steelmakers to follow in their decarbonization efforts. “This is a transformative project that demonstrates the potential of the steel sector to decarbonize and become a key part of the sustainable economy,” said Mr. Bernd Drouven, executive vice president and chief technology officer at ArcelorMittal. The success of the project will be closely watched by industry experts and stakeholders. Top of Form The funding is a positive step for the steel industry’s green transition with ArcelorMittal aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
