Honda Tests Autonomous Vehicle with Black & Veatch Strategic Research Institute Published on : 22 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am Honda and Black & Veatch have successfully tested the prototype Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle at a Black & Veatch construction site in New Mexico. During the month-long field test, the second-generation prototype of the fully-electric Honda AWV performed a range of functions at a large-scale solar energy construction project, including towing activities and transporting construction materials, water, and other supplies to pre-set destinations within the work site. While Honda previously performed testing with an earlier generation of the Honda AWV, this field test was the first to deploy multiple units working collaboratively to support construction use cases. First introduced as a concept at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, the Honda AWV combines the company’s rugged and durable off-road side-by-side platform with emerging advanced autonomous technology. The result is a new category of capable work vehicle that can be deployed in a variety of dynamic work environments. The Honda AWV employs a suite of sensors to operate autonomously, using GPS for location, radar and lidar for obstacle detection and stereoscopic (3D) cameras for remote monitoring. The vehicle also can be operated by remote control. Black & Veatch, a global engineering, procurement and construction company focused on construction optimization and technology innovation collaborated with Honda to provide a real-world testing ground to validate the Honda AWV technology at an active construction site. The company’s personnel were trained by Honda’s engineers on the operation and safety protocols of the vehicles to effectively use the technology in the field. Black & Veatch provided detailed feedback for product and business requirements that will help enhance the Honda AWV’s capabilities and services. In order to validate the capabilities of the Honda AWV, the company selected a solar energy construction site where support structures for solar panels are laid out in a grid pattern at regular intervals. The site was an ideal environment to test the ability of the Honda AWV to stop at precise points along a pre-set route. Honda produced a high-definition map of the 1,000-acre site that allowed Black & Veatch operators to precisely set start and stop points for multiple Honda AWVs using a cloud-based app interface that runs on tablets and PCs. The vehicles successfully delivered materials and supplies along a calculated route and proved capable of stopping within centimeters of the pre-set points. The field test also demonstrated the viability of the Honda AWV battery system to support energy-intensive sensors and provide vehicle propulsion, while operating up to eight hours in a high-temperature environment. The vehicle carried payloads of nearly 900 pounds, and in a separate use case towed a trailer carrying over 1,600 pounds. Based on the capabilities verified in this field test, Honda believes the Honda AWV will be capable of providing a wide range of services to a variety of industries that need a rugged off-road autonomous solution, especially where workforce constraints and safety concerns make other solutions impractical. The ability to operate autonomously – or via remote control – and carry large payloads, along with the potential to add attachments and tools, makes the Honda AWV a suitable platform for many work environments.

VW CEO Open to Third Parties Taking Stakes in Software Unit Carmaker could ‘in principle’ offer equity stakes in Cariad VW seeks to gain speed, save costs on software development Volkswagen AG is open to external partners taking stakes in the manufacturer’s new software division as traditional automakers fight to catch up with Tesla Inc. on digital features. Europe’s biggest carmaker could “in principle” offer equity stakes in its software unit called Cariad, Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess said Tuesday in a video published on VW’s intranet and seen by Bloomberg News. While the company isn’t currently in concrete discussions on equity ties, VW is in talks with major suppliers like Continental AG or Robert Bosch GmbH to cooperate on software, Diess said. VW’s Cariad, set up as an agile, standalone business to pool the carmaker’s sprawling software efforts, has had a number of setbacks to get off the ground. After electrification, gaining speed on developing software architectures to offer digital and automated-driving features carmakers can charge extra for is fast becoming the next battleground. Deep rivalries, differing timelines and antitrust regulation concerns have so far made tie-ups between automakers a rarity, even as the industry has identified opportunities to save on costs and time. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-...
Design Unveiled for Connected Steel Autonomous Vehicle Strategic Research Institute Published on : 01 Dec, 2021, 5:19 am World Steel Association’s automotive group WorldAutoSteel and its engineering partner Ricardo have unveiled the exterior styling vision for their fully autonomous ride-hailing, ride-sharing vehicle designed to showcase the benefits of using steel for global mobility-as-a-service. The Steel E-Motive vehicle design has been optimised to include technologies that are deployable by 2030 and beyond and meet requirements for inner-city driving needs. The design concept comprises both a compact, four-passenger vehicle, and a version with space for more passengers and luggage for out-of-town journeys. Designed by Maurizio Tancredi, Chief Style and Industrial Designer at Ricardo, Steel E-Motive’s exterior styling is created around generative design thinking and is inspired by contemporary architecture in global cities, enabling the vehicle to fit harmoniously into the urban landscape. Using Advanced High-Strength Steel for the design delivers aesthetic, safety, comfort and accessibility benefits. The steel is applied in a pattern that is part of the external visual design rather than being hidden behind outer panels, and the glazing on all sides of the vehicle, including the roof, offers passengers great views of the cityscape. The steel will enable the engineering team to meet mobility-as-a-service operational, safety and environment requirements: for example, its strength and formability supports a unique low-height coverless and integrated battery case, and flat-floor interior, which also aids better accessibility. A unique rocker design offers superior crush force and protection not only to the occupant but the high voltage battery internals. Steel also delivers cost, weight and sustainability benefits over a conventional battery pack using alternative materials, while meeting all current and future anticipated safety standards and legislation. Accessibility is also at the core of the vehicle design. The requirement for low step-in height has driven the primary structure of the vehicle and is enabled by the novel battery case solution. A very wide door opening provides ample access for people and goods, while the unique door structure provides reduced outswing to the roadside. The Steel E-Motive vehicle design also features battery electric propulsion, Level 5 autonomy and four-wheel steering for maximum functionality and manoeuvrability. The design and engineering reflect likely use in a mixed environment where both manual and autonomous vehicles are operating. Vehicle specifications are geared to high-volume manufacture with vehicle producers, fleet operators and ride-hailing users in mind.

EasyMile First Approved for Autonomous Driving in France Strategic Research Institute Published on : 07 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am In a new milestone for autonomous driving, technology company EasyMile has become the first driverless solutions provider in Europe authorized to operate at Level 4 (without any human attendant onboard) in mixed traffic, on a public road. The authorization was handed down from France’s Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Ecological Transition, on advice of the Minister of the Interior and local authorities, for its experimentation in Toulouse, a public service at the Oncopole medical campus in the southern city, in partnership with Alstom. The service at Oncopole has been running between the main entrance and the remote parking lot, on a 600m mixed-traffic route, shared with bicycles, pedestrians as well as cars and buses since March. It will transition to fully driverless in the coming months. Showing the level of maturity of EasyMile and its technology, it came in a decree on 29 June 2021, ahead of the implementation of the final regulatory framework allowing the circulation of autonomous vehicles on public roads in France, starting in September 2022. EasyMile passed rigorous tests and dry-runs, demonstrating the safety and reliability of the technology. It is a major advance for EasyMile, as well as the wider industry, validating the scalability of its technology and positioning the provider as a forerunner. EasyMile’s fully driverless offering has seen rapid growth in the past 18 months. It was the first autonomous vehicle shuttle provider to deploy fully driverless operations in France on a private site, followed by several other Level 4 services around the world. These include a food bank delivery in North America, deployments in the Nordics, the award-winning BusBot fully driverless shuttle in the Coffs Harbour Botanic Garden in Australia, and now the Oncopole service in France. EasyMile’s shared passenger vehicles are equipped with appropriate levels of safety and system redundancies to operate safely and efficiently in a wide range of environments. With the level of integrity of this technology now high enough to withdraw on board supervizors and introduce remote supervision in a growing number of these, it unlocks commercial and operational benefits such as: A control center can supervise multiple vehicles from anywhere meaning scaling to autonomous vehicle fleets without additional manpower is possible. The service becomes fully flexible as vehicles can be deployed immediately as demand arises, without having to wait for additional operators to be available. This driving performance, with shuttles that can operate safely and efficiently in complex environments, delivers a service that is meaningful for users.
Ford Autonomous Vehicle to Deliver Food in Southwest Detroit Strategic Research Institute Published on : 20 Dec, 2021, 5:32 am Just in time for the holidays, Ford Motor Company, in collaboration with its philanthropic arm, Ford Motor Company Fund, is launching a fresh food delivery pilot in Southwest Detroit deploying specialized autonomous vehicle technology. Located within the Michigan Central impact area where Ford is putting mobility innovation and community at its forefront, the six-month pilot is one of the first projects bringing the Michigan Central district to life. It is expected to provide 10,000 pounds of fresh food to the doorsteps of senior citizens who lack access to food due to mobility challenges. Residents of Rio Vista Detroit Co-op Apartments senior living center now will see their existing food deliveries from the complimentary program, Ford Resource and Engagement Center on the Go, launched earlier this year by Ford Fund and Gleaners Community Food Bank, double in the coming weeks as they receive an additional shipment of groceries through the pilot. The program and pilot are essential to more than 20 Rio Vista residents who have already opted-in to this complimentary service as a reliable way to receive their groceries without needing to secure transportation. Ford Fund and Gleaners have distributed 2.4 million pounds of food through the delivery program and Ford Resource and Engagement Centers. Participants currently receive a mix of dry and canned goods plus fresh produce, including milk and cheese. Now, Rio Vista residents will receive another delivery each month containing additional fresh produce and milk. The items were determined based on feedback from residents who are already participating, and will be reevaluated throughout the pilot. The pilot will utilize a low-speed autonomous shuttle operated by the Ford future tech autonomous vehicle team and Quantum Signal AI, a wholly owned Ford subsidiary. It will run along a fixed route between the Southwest Detroit Ford Resource and Engagement Center, where bags will be loaded, taken to Rio Vista, where groceries will be unloaded and distributed to participating residents. A safety driver will be inside the shuttle at all times, and be monitored by a remote operations team that can also intervene if needed. The pilot vehicle has been upfitted by Ford’s experience design team for efficient packing and transit of fresh food items and for easy loading and unloading.
Mobileye Autonomous Cars Pilot Project in Paris Strategic Research Institute Published on : 22 Dec, 2021, 5:31 am Intel’s company Mobileye is adding Paris to its rapidly expanding global autonomous vehicle testing program and announcing its first autonomous on-demand service in the city of Paris, in collaboration with RATP Group, the world’s third-largest public transportation operator. Mobileye has obtained an AV testing permit to allow the company to drive its autonomous robotaxis on the streets of Paris. Passengers who are part of the pilot will be among the first consumers to ride in a Mobileye AV, and the first to hail a robotaxi using the Moovit app that will be at the center of Mobileye’s MoovitAV consumer ridesharing service. In collaboration with RATP, Mobileye organized an AV on-demand service that will provide employees from Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann the ability to request or schedule a ride to work using the Moovit app four days a week. Each Mobileye AV test vehicle is able to transport two passengers at a time, plus a Mobileye safety driver and an RATP co-pilot. With complex road systems and high volumes of pedestrians and traffic, cities like Paris pose a major challenge to human drivers and AVs alike. They represent essential testing fields to develop safe and comfortable driverless services on a global scale. Adding the French capital to Mobileye’s rapidly expanding portfolio of daunting AV testing environments marks another important step in moving the industry toward commercial readiness. Allowing customers to order their AV ride on-demand via the Moovit app lays an important foundation for Mobileye’s planned MoovitAV robotaxi service by gaining consumer awareness and confidence while gathering valuable insights and feedback from riders. In addition to testing in New York City this year, Mobileye is also operating autonomous vehicle test fleets in Munich, Detroit, Tokyo, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and China. The company is expected to launch commercial robotaxi services under the MoovitAV brand in Munich and Tel Aviv in 2022 after obtaining regulatory approval.
