Green Hydrogen Pilot Plant Opens in Dubai Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, Expo 2020 Dubai and Germany’s Siemens Energy’s JV has inaugurated the AED 50 million (USD 14 million) green hydrogen plant at Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum solar park in Dubai in UAE. The integrated facility is developed for electrolysis, storage and re-electrification capabilities. Daylight solar power from the MBR park will enable the pilot project to produce about 20.5 kilograms an hour of hydrogen at 1.25MWe of peak power. The plant has been built to accommodate future applications and test platforms for the different uses of hydrogen, including potential mobility and industrial uses Electrolysis of water is the separation of water into oxygen and hydrogen using an electric current. A DC electrical power source is connected to two electrodes, which are placed in the water and separated by a Proton Exchange Membrane. The membrane allows the transfer of Hydrogen ions (Protons) produced by the electrochemical water splitting from the anode to the cathode. Protons will recombine with the electrons flowing through an external circuit to produce H2 molecules in gaseous form. Oxygen gas will appear at the anode through this electrochemical reaction. This technology allows the storage of large amounts of energy for long periods. Hydrogen can be used for re-electrification through gas motors, gas turbines and fuel cells. It can also be used as a feedstock for the chemical industry (e.g., ammonia, syn-fuels, green-chemicals, etc.), as fuel for transportation, a reducing agent for the steel industry, to produce heat for industrial processes, or as gas for residential heating and cooking purposes, and also as energy for export. Germany Investing in Several Large Scale Hydrogen Projects Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics BMWi and the Federal Ministry of Transport BMVI have selected 62 large scale hydrogen projects, which are to be state-funded as part of a joint European hydrogen project Important Project of Common European Interest IPCEI. The EUR 8 billion is made up of federal and state funds. Around EUR 4.4 billion comes from the Federal Ministry of Economics and up to EUR 1.4 billion from the Federal Ministry of Transport. The remaining funds are made available by the federal states. Investments totalling EUR 33 billion are to be triggered, including more than EUR 20 billion from private investors. The lion’s share of the funding will be directed towards building electrolysers and hydrogen pipelines. Germany’s major steel manufacturers will receive EUR 2 billion between them in funding for hydrogen related decarbonisation projects. The 62 major hydrogen projects were selected from more than 230 project outlines received and represent the entire value chain of the hydrogen market. In the BMWi department, 50 project outlines were selected. These include project sketches for generation plants that together comprise more than 2 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity for the production of green hydrogen. This corresponds to 40% of the target set in the National Hydrogen Strategy of 5 gigawatts by 2030. Hydrogen pipeline projects will advance with a total length of around 1,700 km. A particularly large amount of emissions can be saved in the CO2-intensive steel industry. ArcelorMittal, Stahl Holding Saar, Salzgitter Stahl and Thyssenkrupp Steel have submitted investment projects. A number of innovative projects in the chemical industry use the CO2-free production of hydrogen for the production of ammonia or synthetic fuels for freight or air traffic. The Federal Ministry of Transport is funding 12 projects in the mobility sector. These concern the development and manufacture of fuel cell systems and vehicles, from cars to trucks to municipal vehicles. In addition, for example, the development of a nationwide and cross-border networked hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is being promoted. Also, the aerospace and maritime sector is addressed. New Flemish Consortium Hyve to invest in Hydrogen A group of organisations, consisting of Bekaert, Colruyt Group, Deme, Imec, John Cockerill and Vito have joined forces to invest in the production of green hydrogen. The newly established consortium called ‘Hyve’ aims to produce green hydrogen using electrolysis in a cost-efficient and sustainable way at a gigawatt scale. The consortium members will combine their expertise to develop new components for electrolysers to generate green hydrogen cost-effectively. The members encompass the whole value chain with the following responsibilities: 1. Flemish research centres Imec and Vito, which are partners in EnergyVille, will leverage their knowledge to boost the efficiency of the electrolysis technology. Imec’s expertise in solid-state electrolytes, electrode surfaces, and process technology at the nanoscale is combined with VITO’s expertise in membranes, catalysis, and system integration. 2. Bekaert, supplier of Metallic Porous Transport Layers for electrolysis, will supply the appropriate materials. 3. mJohn Cockerill, producer of alkaline electrolysers, will integrate the results into its production. 4. DEME, a dredging and offshore energy services provider, aims to use novel electrolysers to convert wind and solar energy into green hydrogen and derived green products (e-fuels). Its ‘Hyport’ concept aims to import cheap green hydrogen products into Europe. 5. Colruyt Group will support research applications for sustainable transport. It is operating a hydrogen refuelling station, testing hydrogen-powered forklifts and the first heavy-duty trucks, collaborating on a green hydrogen plant in Zeebrugge through the energy holding company Virya Energy and is exploring e-fuels via Dats24. The group also put its first 44-ton hydrogen-powered electric heavy-duty truck in Europe on the roads. Source - Strategic Research Institute
ABB & Axpo Partner for Making Green Hydrogen More Accessible ABB has joined forces with Swiss utility Axpo to develop modular green hydrogen production plants in Italy, that aim at creating an optimum operating model to produce affordable, green hydrogen. The two companies will apply their complementary skills to achieve their joint vision of more affordable green hydrogen, with ABB harnessing its automation, electrification, and digital leadership in industrial operations and Axpo’s experience as an established energy provider. Initial work will include feasibility studies that explore ways to reduce operating costs and ensure a low carbon footprint, with the aim of identifying synergies that will support the standardization, modularization, efficient and flexible production of green hydrogen. Cost of production currently is a major barrier to adoption of green hydrogen. Green hydrogen, which is produced solely with renewable sources, is approximately six times more expensive today than grey hydrogen to produce and between two to three times more expensive than hybrid "blue" hydrogen, both of which are produced using fossil fuels as an energy source*. This project reflects a wider initiative from ABB which is joining forces with customers and partners to explore opportunities and technologies, to build a resilient hydrogen ecosystem for a low carbon future. In addition to the collaboration with Axpo, ABB is working with Lhyfe, to install control solutions to automate production of its first green hydrogen project in France. Ovako to Use Hydrogen in Reheating Furnaces in Hofors Rolling Mill Sweden’s largest fossil free hydrogen facility is now being built with the goal of greatly reducing CO2 emissions, developing local industrial hydrogen production, and taking the first step towards a future hydrogen infrastructure for the transport sector. Ovako is starting collaboration with the Volvo Group, Hitachi ABB Power Grids Sweden, H2 Green Steel and Nel Hydrogen to invest in hydrogen production in Hofors. The electrolyser for the production of fossil-free hydrogen will be installed at Ovako’s site in Hofors and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, provided that permits are secured as planned. The 17 MW plant will generate 3,500 cubic meters of fossil free hydrogen per hour. The conversion to hydrogen will enable Ovako to reduce its CO2 emissions for steel production in Hofors by 50% from already low levels. The investment of approximately SEK 180 million is supported by the Swedish Energy Agency via the Industriklivet initiative. The plan is for local hydrogen production to be used in all of Ovako’s units where steel is rolled by 2030, provided that there is a good supply of fossil-free electricity. The new hydrogen plant in Hofors will make Ovako the first in the world to heat steel with hydrogen prior to rolling, and is the next major step towards climate-neutral steel production. The technical solution will also enable large-scale and cost-effective production of hydrogen for applications like fossil-free freight using fuel-cell trucks. With installations at multiple locations, this could enable a network with locally produced fossil-free hydrogen available for the transport sector. Ovako is now initiating cooperation with several key players in Swedish and Norwegian industry. The initiative is also supported by the Swedish Energy Agency, with the shared goal of establishing industry-wide use of fossil-free hydrogen, expanding awareness of the potential of this fuel, and achieving cost-effective production. A filling station for hydrogen-powered heavy vehicles is intended to be built beside the hydrogen plant. This technical solution provides high-temperature processes in steel production with fossil-free hydrogen and oxygen, and thus replaces fossil fuels. With a greater need for oxygen than hydrogen in the steel industry, there are also good opportunities for cost-effective and large-scale use of hydrogen in other areas, such as fossil-free freight with fuel cell trucks. The solution can be used flexibly and can therefore contribute to improved electricity grid stability, which in turn allows for a higher proportion of renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the residual heat can be utilized in district heating networks. Source - Strategic Research Institute
Watersof!

The goal: hydrogen through solar energy"Producing Hydrogen Using Less Energy June 22, 2021 The international research team describes the complete reaction path for electrocatalytic hydrogen generation The way in which a compound inspired by nature produces hydrogen has now been described in detail for the first time by an international research team from the University of Jena and the University of Milan-Bicocca. These findings are the foundation for the energy-efficient production of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. Nature as a model There are naturally occurring microorganisms that produce hydrogen, using special enzymes called hydrogenases. “What is special about hydrogenases is that they generate hydrogen catalytically. Unlike electrolysis, which is usually carried out industrially using an expensive platinum catalyst, the microorganisms use organometallic iron compounds,” explains Prof. Wolfgang Weigand from the Institute of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Jena. “As an energy source, hydrogen is naturally of great interest. That’s why we want to understand exactly how this catalytic process takes place,” he adds. In the past, numerous compounds have already been produced worldwide that are chemically modelled on the naturally occurring hydrogenases. In cooperation with the university of Milan, Weigand and his team in Jena have now produced a compound that has yielded entirely new insights into the catalysis process. “As in nature, our model is based on a molecule that contains two iron atoms. Compared with the natural form, however, we changed the chemical environment of the iron in a specific way. To be precise, an amine was replaced by a phosphine oxide with similar chemical properties. We therefore brought the element phosphorus into play.” Detailed insight into electrocatalytic hydrogen production This enabled Weigand and his team to better understand the process of hydrogen formation. Through autodissociation, water forms positively charged protons and negatively charged hydroxide ions. “Our goal was to understand how these protons form hydrogen. However, the proton donor in our experiments was not water, but an acid,” Weigand says. “We observed that the proton of the acid is transferred to the phosphine oxide of our compound followed by a proton release to one of the iron atoms. A similar process would also be found in the natural variant of the molecule,” he adds. In order to balance the proton’s positive charge and ultimately produce hydrogen, negatively charged electrons were introduced in the form of electric current. With the help of cyclic voltammetry and simulation software developed at the University of Jena, the individual steps in which these protons were finally reduced to free hydrogen were examined. “During the experiment, we could actually see how the hydrogen gas rose from the solution in small bubbles,” notes Weigand. “The experimental measurement data from the cyclic voltammetry and the simulation results were then used by the research team in Milan for quantum chemical calculations,” adds Weigand. “This enabled us to propose a plausible mechanism for how the entire reaction proceeds chemically to produce the hydrogen – and this for each individual step of the reaction. This has never been done before with this level of accuracy.” The group published the results and the proposed reaction pathway in the renowned journal ACS Catalysis. The goal: hydrogen through solar energy Building on these findings, Weigand and his team now want to develop new compounds that can not only produce hydrogen in an energy-efficient way, but also use sustainable energy sources to do so. “The goal of the Transregio Collaborative Research Centre 234 ‘CataLight’, of which this research is a part, is the production of hydrogen by splitting water with the use of sunlight,” Weigand explains. “With the knowledge gained from our research, we are now working on designing and investigating new catalysts based on the hydrogenases, which are ultimately activated using light energy.”
Galp Plans to Produce Green Hydrogen at Sines Refinery Portugal's Galp reportedly plans to install a 100-megawatt electrolyser to power its refinery in Sines with green hydrogen by 2025. The company’s Chief Executive Andy Brown told news agency Reuters in an interview that the project could be expanded to up to 1,000 MW and be worth around EUR 1 billion. He told “Galp wants to gradually produce zero-carbon green hydrogen through a process of electrolysis using renewable solar energy. At the moment, this process is more expensive than producing hydrogen by using heat and chemical reactions to release it from coal or natural gas, but because of the cost of gas and the cost of CO2, at a certain point it can be profitable.” Galp’s refinery, located south of Lisbon, is Portugal's biggest consumer of hydrogen from natural gas, but Galp wanted to gradually produce the zero-carbon fuel through a process of electrolysis using renewable solar energy. Such hydrogen is now more expensive to extract than the heavily polluting conventional method of using heat and chemical reactions to release it from coal or natural gas, known as brown and grey hydrogen, respectively. Wärtsilä & GEV to Develop on Propulsion for Hydrogen Vessel The technology group Wärtsilä has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Global Energy Ventures of Australia, a company specialised in delivering compressed shipping solutions for transporting energy to regional markets. The two companies will cooperate on the inclusion of Wärtsilä propulsion systems in GEV’s compressed hydrogen C-H2 ships. The MOU was signed in Sydney in Australia. The cooperation aims at advancing GEV’s Approval in Principle (AiP) application for its new 430-ton C-H2 vessel. It is also intended to demonstrate the availability of a highly efficient, low-emissions propulsion system for the vessel. Compression delivers a proven, simple, and efficient method for transporting green hydrogen. It is a preferred solution for marine hydrogen transport but is often overlooked due to its lower volumetric energy density. The parties to the agreement believe that the C-H2 project will eliminate the technical barriers and deliver a solution which is superior to other transport alternatives. Sinopec Targets 1 Million Tonne Green Hydrogen Capacity by 2025 Reuters reported that China's state-controlled energy giant Sinopec aims to set up plants that can make 500,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year from renewable energy sources by 2025. The company currently has annual hydrogen production capacity of 3.84 million tonnes, with about half coming as a by-product from its refineries and a third made from coal. It wasn't immediately clear whether the 500,000 tonnes of 'green' capacity will replace some existing facilities or will be additional. Sinopec Group VP Mr Ling Yiqun said “The company will aim to boost green hydrogen production to over 1 million tonnes cumulatively during the 2021-2025 period, and will focus on developing hydrogen as a transportation fuel and green hydrogen refining.” The company in late May announced its first green hydrogen project, a 20,000 tonnes per annum plant located in Inner Mongolia, is expect to launch its first phase in 2022. It also plans to build another 20,000 tonne green hydrogen plant in Xinjiang. Sinopec will build more hydrogen transport pipelines to connect producers and downstream market. So far the company operates three pipelines with total length of just 99 kilometres. Most of China's hydrogen is transported by trucks, a more expensive option than operating a pipeline, reaching relatively limited markets compared with a grid of pipelines. Sinopec has vowed to be China's leading hydrogen company and set up 1,000 hydrogen filling stations across the country. Source - Strategic Research Institute
