Indian iron ore mining mess - Probe uses satellite images The CBI took recourse to satellite imagery to trace huge amounts of iron ore stacked illegally around Obulapuram Mining Company. While OMC promoters claimed they had been excavated from the Obulapuram mines, investigators discovered that most stocks found there had been transported illegally from mines dotting the Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh border. The satellite images, a CBI source claimed, nailed the lie of the OMC promoters. The source said that "It was clear that iron ore from other mines had been carted to Obulapuram mines and shown as an OMC product.” While Obulapuram mines are located in Andhra Pradesh's Ananpur district, OMC's head office is located in neighboring Bellary, which falls in Karnataka. Besides Janardhana Reddy, his brothers Karunakara and Somsekhara are the co promoters of OMC. CBI, along with the Survey of India, had earlier this year been asked by the Supreme Court to undertake a survey of the iron-ore mines leased to the Reddy brothers in Anantpur district. As part of the survey, the two agencies are learnt to have taken recourse to satellite imagery. The Reddys are accused of mining far beyond the 25.9 hectares their company was allowed. CBI alleges the Reddys dug deep into the Bellary Reserve forest area, which includes portions of both Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh and Bellary in Karnataka. Mr Janardhana and his brother in law Mr Sreenivas Reddy the managing director of Bellary Mining Corporation, were on Monday arrested by CBI for illegal mining by OMC. They have been remanded to judicial custody. (Sourced from ET)
ArcelorMittal shares slumped on Eisenhuttenstadt BF closure The Street reported that shares of ArcelorMittal were falling to USD 17.70, down by USD 1.62 or 8.4% as investors chose to flee the stock after it announced to idle its second blast furnace this week. It shut down a plant in Eisenhüttenstadt in Germany. The steel company hit a 52 week low when it toughed to USD 17.65 a share after noon. Mr Anthony B. Rizzuto MD of metals research at Dahlman Rose told The Street that "I think the market looks at that news as ... a weakening." Though investors have chosen to punish the stock twice this week, Mr Rizzuto felt upbeat about the steel producer's decisions. He said that "We like to see the discipline." High raw material costs (iron ore, scrap steel, metallurgical coal), lean inventories and low global steel demand have forced ArcelorMittal to shift its strategies. Mr Rizzuto went on to say that it was wise of the company to close its higher cost facilities in Germany and France and shift production to some of its more efficient factories to partially offset these costs. Maandag weer up.
By Wael Mahdi - Sep 11, 2011 1:13 PM GMT+0200 ArcelorMittal to Start Saudi Steel Mill Next Year, Watan Says The Saudi unit of ArcelorMittal (MT), the world’s largest steelmaker, expects to start producing in the first half of 2012 at its new mill at Jubail in eastern Saudi Arabia, al-Watan reported. The $700-million plant will produce 600,000 metric tons of pipes a year for the oil and petrochemical industry, the Abha- based newspaper reported, citing Mohammed al-Jabr, ArcelorMittal’s managing director in Saudi Arabia. Al-Jabr was formerly the vice president of Saudi Basic Industries Corp.’s steel unit, according to the report. The company plans to invest up to $3 billion in Saudi steel projects over the next five years and is conducting studies to build a factory north of Jubail at Ras al-Khair, where the government is forming a mining hub, al-Jabr told the newspaper.

ArcelorMittal Skopje to use HRC from ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor Indiana made steel is headed from the Port of Indiana Burns Harbor to the Republic of Macedonia. Port officials said that it’s the first substantial steel export since 2008. The shipment, made up of 18,000 tonnes of hot rolled steel coils, was produced at ArcelorMittal’s Burns Harbor facility. The steel will ship to Thessaloniki, Greece, where it will be unloaded and transported to ArcelorMittal Skopje, a steel finishing facility in Macedonia’s capital city. US Rep Peter Visclosky said that “I am hopeful that this large export is just the beginning of a long trend for our local steel companies, and proof that American steel remains competitive worldwide.” The Pacific Huron, a vessel built especially for carrying cargo between Europe and the Great Lakes, is making its fourth voyage into the Great Lakes. The trip is expected to take 23 days, with stops for fuel in Montreal and Gibraltar, arriving in Thessaloniki on October 1. Mr Ramana Venkat MD of ArcelorMittal International, called it the company’s most significant export from the US in three years. He said that “Opportunities to export steel from ArcelorMittal USA facilities can be very attractive when market conditions allow .Export projects always bring excitement to the teams involved and demonstrate the global competitiveness of our Northwest Indiana steel facilities.” Port officials said steel shipments through the port are up 40% over last year, with 2011 on target for having the highest steel shipments since 2007. Through August, the port has handled 25% more cargo than 2010, including a variety of project cargoes such as wind equipment and heavy machinery. (Sourced from posttrib.suntimes.com)

Chinese crude steel output in August down by 1pct MoM It is reported that China’s crude steel output in August fell by 0.9% MoM to 58.75 million tonnes as several steel mills reduced production due to maintenance. Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that China daily crude steel output fell below 1.9 million tonnes for the first single month this year with the mills scheduling maintenance to take advantage of weak consumption season over the summer period. China average daily steel output stood at above 1.9 million tonnes this year hitting a record 1.998 million tonnes per day in June compared with an average 1.7 million tonnes last year as mills positioned themselves to take advantage of strong demand from construction activities particularly the social housing programme. Mr Du Hui steel analyst with Qilu Securities in Shanghai said "Steel output declined for July and August mainly due to big mills' maintenance, but the production over the next few months may find it difficult to climb as rapidly as the first half." Mr Graeme Train analyst with Macquarie Commodities Research said “We don't expect steel production to fall from here. While construction appears to be stagnating, there are signs that manufacturing demand is bottoming out and seasonal consumption should help provide some lift into the final quarter of the year.” Bureau data showed that China total steel production accumulated to 469.3 million tonnes for the first eight months this year up by 11%YoY from the same period of last year.
TATA Steel Port Talbot to produce super steel A WALES steel works has been earmarked to produce high performance armoured steel which will help save lives on the front line. Super bainite, which offers twice the protection of normal rolled steel, is to be developed into seven different items, including perforated armour plates that could be used on future frontline armoured vehicles, under a licensing agreement agreed between the Ministry of Defence and TATA Steel. The UK invented steel is to be manufactured in TATA’s Port Talbot steelworks. Super bainite was invented by Defence Science and Technology Laboratory’s Professor Peter Brown, Professor Harry Bhadeshia, TATA Steel Professor of Metallurgy at Cambridge University and Dr Carlos Garcia-Mateo, previously at Cambridge University and currently at the National Centre for Metallurgical Research, Madrid. Super bainite is produced uniquely through a variety of cooling methods, using air or even molten salt, throughout production instead of rapid cooling with water. Combining drilling and hole punching during the cooling process results in ultra high hardness, perforated plate. Dstl’s Professor Brown said that “The ballistic performance of perforated super bainite steel armour is at least twice that of conventional rolled homogenous steel armour. This is because the introduction of perforations creates a large number of edges which disrupt the path of incoming projectiles, significantly reducing their potency.” The licence agreement was signed between Ploughshare Innovations and TATA Steel. It allows TATA Steel to manufacture and process super bainite in the UK and in Europe and to export it globally. Mr Peter Luff minister for defence, equipment support and technology said that ”The application of new, battle-winning technologies is what gives our troops the edge. This demonstrates, once again, that investing in research and development, in partnership with industry, means that our troops can have the latest innovations in frontline equipment.” (Sourced from www.walesonline.co.uk)
Sandvik predicts metals weakness in Q3 Swedish speciality steel and tool maker Sandvik said demand in most markets was still strong, easing concerns about the impact of global economic uncertainties, adding it would see some effect from weaker metal prices in the third quarter. Mr Olof Faxander CEO at the company's capital markets day on Wednesday said that "Even with the situation around us we see a generally strong market situation. We have not changed our view since the report in July.” Sandvik has been buoyed by a rapid recovery in demand after being among the hardest hit Swedish engineers during the financial crisis, when it posted multi billion crown losses.
