    Now reports says 50 Syrian barrel bomb ( vaten bommen ) experts recently travelled to Russia

    Fifty experts from Syrian military who specialise in deadly barrel bombs that destroy anything within 800ft ( 240 meter ) radius are drafted in to aid Russian forces in Ukraine invasion

    It is understood that the arrival of the specialists was one of the main reasons behind both the United States and European countries warning that chemical weapons could be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

    Barrel bombs are drums packed with crude explosives and shrapnel, which tend to be dropped from a helicopter. The bombs typically weigh anywhere between 300kg to 600kg and, despite their DIY nature, can destroy everything in a 800ft ( 240 meter ) radius.

    As well as explosives, al-Assad's regime was also accused of filling canisters with deadly chemicals, such as chlorine, and dropping them on towns and cities held by opposition forces, killing hundreds and sparking human rights abuse allegations.

    Barrel bombs were effective Syria, largely down to the fact that the government had air capabilities while the rebels did not.

    In Ukraine, this is not the case.
    Kyiv's forces are armed with an array of anti-aircraft missiles that can shoot down helicopters and fighter jets, which has prevented Russian from every winning air superiority.

    Speaking to The Guardian, one European official said that this has likely acted as a deterrent, and could be the reason barrel bombs have not yet been seen in Ukraine.

    'We know the capacity is there, but if they use it, they lose; we will know who's done it, and they will likely be killed anyway,'

    the anonymous official told the newspaper.

    The situation at Severodonetsk continues to be difficult.

    The Russians are assaulting the city from all directions.

    Heavy fighting in the area of the central bus station. Assaults continue from the direction of Shchedryshcheve.

    The ( Ukrainian ) boys are holding.

    Hoewel Poetin grote misstappen beging in de oorlog is de afloop nog maar zeer de vraag, ook indien hij van het toneel mocht verdwijnen.
    Ik vind het wel dapper hoe Oekraïne zich wapent tegen Rusland.

Daardoor is het voor Duitsland lastiger om van Russisch gas af te komen', stelt Kaplan. Hij ziet de oorlog niet als autocratie versus democratie maar als 'een wereld met of zonder rechtsstaat.' Ook moeten we kijken naar het Rusland na Poetin: 'Na Poetin valt Rusland in een zwart gat. Ze hebben niet de bureaucratische structuren om snel verkiezingen uit te schrijven.'

    In Buitenhof het wekelijks gewichtig doen feestje van de keurige correcte mensen van NRC en de Volkskrant eindelijk een echte wereldwijd erkende deskundige: Robert Kaplan. Dat is wel een paar niveautjes hoger dan wat we hier hebben al is het vanwege zijn veel betere informatiepositie.

    Zijn analyse: we zullen Saudi nodig hebben voor gas en olie. Begon Twan typisch Nederlands: Saudi toch slecht? Nou daar weet zo een echte strateeg wel raad mee. Zo iemand gaat er gewoon vanuit dat we niet in een ideale wereld leven en komt dan vanuit ons westers belang met een haars scherpe analyse.

    Vorige keer jaren geleden met al eerder wijzen op de foute Merkelpolitiek aangaande gastoevoer uit Rusland en nalaten kernenergie meer te gebruiken en toe te passen had hij ook al gelijk.

    Hopelijk wordt er nu beter geluisterd door onze Mickey Mouse politici zoals Jetten.

    PS Trouwens weinig of geen kritiek op de poging van Timmermans om gezamenlijk gas en olie in te gaan kopen. Wederom een onzinnig plan van de EU-bureaucraten om macht naar zich toe te trekken. Geen EU-taak en nergens voor nodig. EU: terug naar jouw hok en waarvoor je bent bedoeld!!!

    As seen over the last 8 yrs in Russian occupied eastern #Ukraine, knock on effect of Russia's destruction, endemic corruption, exodus of largescale businesses & no investment - is a near total lack of employment opportunities. So Russian occupied Ukraine will become another #NorthKorea.

    The Kyiv Independent: What is your general reaction to the New York Times editorial?

    Andriy Zagorodnyuk: In the American community, there’s still a lack of understanding of what (Russia’s war) might end up being and where it’s going. The most informed part, working with the military, has a clearer vision. They have a clear understanding of the fact that, despite all of Russia’s effort and investment, the result is far less effective than what was expected.

    American and British defense secretaries say Ukraine is going to win; the same goes for military generals and U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Miley. In general, it is their policy to make everything possible so that Ukraine can win.

    At the same time, unfortunately, certain intellectuals and authors publish rather strange and ill-timed articles. Most likely, they are just describing the situation as they see it. Their vision is very wrong, but they write it, and we have to respond.

    The Kyiv Independent: What exactly do you think is wrong here?

    Andriy Zagorodnyuk: The key wrong assumption is that Ukraine can’t win, therefore, it has to make a deal. We believe it’s a weak argument for two reasons.

    First — Ukraine can win, and this, in many ways, depends on how our partners, including the U.S., are going to be sending weapons, hardware, and munitions. And second — we see absolutely no chances for a negotiation process. Russia has not demonstrated the slightest signs of altering its strategic goals regarding Ukraine. They keep pushing for their narratives; they keep waging war and going on the offensive. There’s no point talking about any sort of compromise and negotiations.

    A lot of things have been done and can’t be undone now — the war crimes, the things that we can surely identify as acts of state terrorism. We will always be saying that (Vladimir) Putin and his military are war criminals, and they have to leave our territory. If they end up being ready to talk, there can potentially be talks. But right now they aren’t, so we have nothing to talk about.

    When some foreign journalists or observers try to tell us we have to talk anyway, it means they don’t understand the situation.

    The Kyiv Independent: So you think Russia can be defeated?

    Andriy Zagorodnyuk: The situation is changing rapidly, and it seems that many people can’t catch up with what’s happening. And they have already started giving advice and voicing their opinions on what should be done. There’s a psychological barrier that is blocking them from believing that Russia can be severely defeated. It is built on the long-lasting assumption that Russia is a military superpower, an undefeated force.

    This thought is so deeply ingrained that they can’t believe Russia’s “super military” is fake. Even the Russian leadership doesn’t understand this because of the lack of democratic, civilian control over the military.

    We must explain to them that Russia can be defeated. The very way (Saddam Hussein’s) Iraqi military was defeated, along with others. Russians can and may be defeated because they are weak. It’s clear that they have a lot of vehicles and a lot of people. But the hardware is wacky, people are poorly trained, and all they are doing is rendering pressure upon us with their mass.

    Elke dag sterven aan het front in het oosten van Oekraïne 50 tot 100 Oekraïense soldaten. Dat heeft de Oekraïense president Volodimir Zelenski gezegd tijdens zijn persconferentie met de Poolse president Andrzej Duda. Hij noemde Oost-Oekraïne het "moeilijkste front" voor de Oekraïners. "Zij beschermen onze vrijheid en onafhankelijkheid, waarover in heel de wereld gesproken wordt", aldus de president. Die hoge dodentol rechtvaardigt volgens Zelenski ook het verbod voor Oekraïense mannen van dienstplichtige leeftijd om het land te verlaten.

    In april zei Zelenski dat sinds het begin van de Russische invasie zowat 3.000 Oekraïense soldaten gestorven waren. Exacte cijfers wil zijn kabinet niet geven, omdat die volgens adviseur Oleksij Arestovitsj oorlogsgeheim zijn. (Gva).

    Hij had het enkel over donbas. Pas ook een cijfer gelezen over Mariopul, een Oekraïense schatting: 20.000 burgerdoden.

    Before I hand you over to my colleague Martin Belam, here are the latest lines from Ukraine this morning:

    Ukraine has said it will not agree to any ceasefire deal that would involve handing over territory to Russia, as Moscow intensified its attack in the eastern Donbas region. “The war must end with the complete restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” said Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.

    The comments came as Russia said it was willing to resume peace negotiations, its lead negotiator said on Sunday, but the initiative to continue them was with Kyiv. Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky claimed in an interview with Belarusian TV that “Russia has never refused talks”. “Freezing talks was entirely Ukraine’s initiative,” he said, adding that the “ball is completely in their court”.

    Polish president Andrzej Duda became the first foreign leader to address the Ukrainian parliament in person since the invasion began, backing Ukraine’s stance on territorial concessions and warning the international community that ceding any territory to Russia would be a “huge blow” to the entire west. “After Bucha, Borodianka, Mariupol, there cannot be business as usual with Russia,” he said.

    Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said 50 to 100 Ukrainians were dying every day on the war’s eastern front in what appeared to be a reference to military casualties. The heaviest fighting is focused around the twin cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk in Luhansk, one of the two regions that make up the Donbas. Serhiy Gaidai, the governor of Luhansk, said in a local television interview that Russia was using “scorched-earth” tactics in the region.

    Russia’s death toll from its war on Ukraine is akin to the losses suffered in its war in Afghanistan, the UK Ministry of Defence has said. In the first three months since Russia invaded Ukraine, it is likely to have suffered a similar death toll to that experienced by the Soviet Union during its nine year war in Afghanistan, the MoD claimed. A combination of “poor low-level tactics, limited air cover, a lack of flexibility” and a command approach “prepared to reinforce failure and repeat mistakes” has led to the high casualty rate, British intelligence added.

    Russia is “concentrating its efforts” on assaults on the eastern Ukrainian city of Siverodonetsk and the nearby town of Toshkivka, the Ukrainian military has said in its latest operational report.

    Ukraine is set to top the agenda at the four-day World Economic Forum in Davos, which kicks off on Monday with a video address from Zelenskiy. This year Russia’s “house” at the event was transformed by Ukrainian artists into a “Russian war crimes house”, portraying images of misery and devastation.

    Poland to terminate agreement with Russia regarding Yamal gas pipeline, says minister

    WARSAW, May 23 (Reuters) - Poland has decided to terminate an intergovernmental agreement with Russia regarding the Yamal gas pipeline, Polish Climate Minister Anna Moskwa said on Twitter on Monday.

    "Russia's aggression against Ukraine has confirmed the accuracy of the Polish government's determination to become completely independent from Russian gas. We always knew that Gazprom was not a reliable partner," Moskwa said.

    Rusland wil 50 nieuwe intercontinentale raketten in gebruik nemen

    Rusland is van plan om tegen het einde van de herfst zo'n vijftig nieuwe intercontinentale ballistische Sarmat-raketten in gebruik te nemen, meldt het Russische ruimtevaartbedrijf Roscosmos.

    De raketten hebben een reikwijdte van 18.000 kilometer en kunnen een nucleaire lading vervoeren. Met de wapens kan Rusland doelwitten in de hele wereld treffen, zowel via de Noord- als de Zuidpool. De raketten zullen in Krasnojark in Siberië gestationeerd worden.

    De Sarmat-raket werd medio april voor het eerst getest, volgens de Russen met succes. De raket zou zijn gelanceerd vanuit Plesetsk in het noordwesten van het land en zou doelen hebben geraakt op het schiereiland Kamtsjatka in het uiterste oosten van Rusland, bijna 6000 kilometer verderop. "Het verplicht landen om twee keer na te denken alvorens Rusland te bedreigen", zei president Vladimir Poetin toen.
