Cityjet posts pre-tax losses of €208.9m
    Monday, October 21, 2013

Exceptional and redundancy costs totalling €185m contributed to Dublin- based airline, Cityjet last year recording pre-tax losses of €208.9m.

The airline’s parent Air France KLM is currently in advanced negotiations to sell the airline off to a third party and new accounts for Cityjet Ltd show that the airline recorded revenues of €260.2m in the 12 months to the end of December last.

This represented a 9% increase on the €238m in revenues recorded for a nine-month period to the end of December 2011.
The pre-tax loss last year followed pre-tax losses of €8.86m in 2011.
The figures show operating losses at the airline rose more than three-fold from €6.2m to €21.3m last year with exceptional costs contributing to the losses exceeding €208m.
A note attached to the accounts shows Air France provided €12m to Cityjet since the start of this year “to fund the ongoing operations of the company”.
The report states that a loss of flying activity arose from the airline losing franchise activity on the Zurich to Paris route and wet-leased activity (the provision of jets and crews to other airlines) on the London to Milan-Linate route. The subsequent voluntary redundancy programme resulted in 97 job losses at a cost of €3.2m.
The airline last year carried 2.1m passengers compared to 1.8m for the nine month period in 2011.
The company undertook an impairment assessment of its fleet during the year resulting in a charge of €7.3m. A €175m impairment was also recorded on the firm’s investment in VLM Airlines.

Returning Hajj pilgrims urged to be alert for signs of illness
    Updated 21 October 2013, 13:31 AEST
Health experts are warning that a deadly virus found mainly in Saudi Arabia may spread, as Islamic pilgrims return home from the Hajj.
    .....
BIRTLES: The Hajj pilgrimage was long seen as the riskiest stage for the spread of the MERS virus.

Charles Watson, a Professor of a Health Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, says the next few weeks will be crucial to see whether new cases emerge outside the Middle East.

WATSON: 'If there was to be a problem with the pilgrims going to the Hajj, it would be when they return to their respective countries when the problems might emerge.'

MERS virus checks stepped up at airport as haj pilgrims return
Screeners at airport check for Mers symptoms in travellers coming home from Saudi Arabia
    PUBLISHED : Sunday, 20 October, 2013, 6:57am

    .....
At a talk on Wednesday about the haj and its relevance to Hong Kong Muslims, anthropology lecturer Paul O'Connor said, "There's been a lot of concern about this virus". He said: "[The] haj is a place where we are always concerned about health."

Often, pilgrims suffered from the "haj cough" when they got home, he said.

Last year, one of the imams who led a group of pilgrims returned to Hong Kong and was admitted to hospital for observation because he was ill.

Two more MERS cases reported in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has reported two more Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) cases in the past few days, both in men living in the Riyadh region, according to a press account and a translated government statement.
    .....
In the wake of the Hajj pilgrimage, which ended Oct 18, Saudi officials said there has been no evidence of any MERS cases or other life-threatening infectious diseases among pilgrims, according to the Arab News report. But, as many observers have noted, the MERS-CoV incubation period is long enough so that cases could still surface in pilgrims who have returned home.

Lufthansa 2013 profit outlook disappoints, shares hit
    Reuters – 1 hour 56 minutes ago

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's Lufthansa (LHA.DE) unveiled a new 2013 profit outlook that fell short of expectations, driving its shares lower, as restructuring costs and volatile exchange rates weighed on its earnings.
The German flagship airline said on Tuesday it now saw its full-year operating profit rising to between 600 million and 700 million euros ($820.5-957.3 million) from 524 million in 2012, compared with a previous outlook for a year-on-year rise.
That is well below the consensus for 917.5 million euros, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine SmartEstimates, which weight analysts' estimates according to their track record.
Shares in Lufthansa slid on the news and were down 4 percent at 14.26 euros by 0714 GMT. Germany's blue-chip DAX index (.GDAXI) was 0.1 percent lower.
Lufthansa, which is due to publish full nine-month results on October 31, said its full-year profit would be hit by about 200 million euros worth of restructuring costs and 100 million euros of project costs.
Like Air France-KLM (AF.PA) and International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG.L), which groups British Airways and Iberia, Lufthansa is the midst of deep cutbacks to cope with soaring fuel costs and tough competition from Gulf and low-cost carriers.
In the first nine months of 2013, Lufthansa's operating profit dropped 27 percent to about 660 million euros. Excluding restructuring and project costs, that figure came to about 860 million euros, it said.
