Siemens Gamesa Secures 81 MW Deal in Finland Siemens Gamesa has struck an 81 MW deal with long term customer Suomen Hyotytuuli Oy to supply its most powerful onshore wind turbine, the SG 5.8-155 model, marking a first take up of this new technology in Finland.

RWE & SkySails Harness High Altitude Winds for Power Generation RWE Renewables GmbH and SkySails Power GmbH have high-flying ambitions. They are planning to fly a 120-square meters kite to a height of up to 400 metres above ground to utilise high-altitude winds for generating electricity. The two companies have now entered a collaboration agreement on this pilot project. RWE is purchasing an innovative airborne wind energy system with an output of up to 200 kilowatts from the Hamburg-based company. RWE Renewables will operate the SkySails Power system and evaluate the technology during the three-year pilot project. Currently, suitable locations in Germany are being assessed. Airborne wind energy systems harness the strong and steady winds at heights of several hundred metres above ground. Part of the SkySails Power system is a ground station consisting of a winch with an integrated generator. During its ascent in a controlled trajectory, the kite pulls rope from the winch – and the built-in generator produces electricity from the rotational energy. Once the tether is completely unspooled, the kite is winched back in. It brings itself automatically into a position of very low resistance so that it can be hauled back easily. The generator now acts as a motor operating the winch. This process only requires a fraction of the energy that has been generated during the active phase. The cycle can then start over again. Current airborne wind systems have a maximum capacity of 100 to 200 kilowatts. Developing this technology further will increase the potential output from kilowatts to megawatts and thus make it attractive for use in large wind farms. SkySails is already developing such a large-scale system. Source - Strategic Research Institute
Vattenfall Installs Turbine at Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm Vattenfall announced that the tower, nacelle and blades were installed for the first turbine at the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea on 27 January. The individual parts of the turbines are assembled at Port of Roenne on the Danish island of Bornholm. Afterwards they are shipped in sets of four to the construction site at sea. The 72 turbines are produced by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and will be commissioned on an ongoing basis as they are installed. The installation follows the granting last week by the Danish Energy Agency of the license to produce electricity. Despite the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the construction of Kriegers Flak is generally proceeding according to plan and scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2021, at the latest. Compared to 2019, Kriegers Flak will increase the Danish production of wind energy by 16 per cent or enough to cover the annual electricity consumption of approximately 600,000 Danish households. Vattenfall is Denmark's largest developer of offshore wind and is, in addition to Kriegers Flak, also building two offshore wind farms off Jutland's west coast. Kriegers Flak will have a production capacity of around 600 MW. Approximately 600,000 Danish households can have their annual electricity consumption covered by the offshore wind farm. Each of the 72 wind turbines are 187 metres tall, and each foundation weighs up to 800 tonnes. The offshore wind farm is located in the Baltic Sea, 15-40 kilometres off the Danish coast. The site covers an area of 132 km2 and has approximately 170 kilometres of subsea cables. The farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2021. Source - Strategic Research Institute

First Turbine Installed at Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm Triton Knoll today confirmed that the first of its 90 offshore wind turbines has been safely and successfully installed, marking an important step towards first generation this Spring. The v164-9.5 MW turbines are manufactured by Vestas, which has placed its Isle of Wight and Fawley blade facilities at the heart of component production. All blades, nacelles and tower sections are being handled at a specialist turbine pre-assembly and construction base, established by Triton Knoll and Vestas at Able Seaton Port, in Teesside. Installation is being carried out by DEME, using the jack-up vessel Wind Osprey, provided by Cadeler. The 9.5MW turbines are amongst the most powerful operating anywhere in the world, and capable of energising a typical UK household for more than 29 hours with just a single turn of the blades. Each turbine has a greater swept area than the London Eye (turbine 187m, London Eye 120m), and measures 187 metres from the base of the tower to the tip of the blades.

Iberdrola Places Asturias Wind Farms in Operation Iberdrola has started to commission three of the four wind farms Cordel-Vidural, Capiechamartín and Panondres in Asturias. The company is working on the construction of the fourth, Verdigueiro, following granting of the administrative authorisation, which will bring the total installed capacity to 130 MW of wind power, thereby tripling its renewable capacity in Asturias. The wind farms consist of SG114 wind turbines, with a unit capacity of 2.62 MW: Cordel-Vidural 37 MW is located between the municipalities of Navia, Valdés and Villayón; Capiechamartín (34 MW) is situated between Tineo and Valdés; and Panondres 21 MW is between Villayón and Valdés. Verdigueiro 36 MW is being built between Tineo and Villayón. Almost all the field work and civil works have been carried out by Asturias companies such as Hormavasa and Horvalsa, Canteras Rencanos, Deymet, Excade, Posada, Méndez y Mota, Gruas Roxu and Taxus; the project has been developed by ERPASA and the wind turbine tower were manufactured at the Windar facilities in Avilés. These farms entail one of the most complex wind farm infrastructure projects in Spain. The materials (including towers, nacelles and blades) have been transported along narrow, single-track roads with numerous slopes and bends of up to almost 180º. This activity has required exhaustive planning External link, opens in new window. to avoid affecting the planned works and to ensure the arrival of up to 200 daily shipments with different materials. At an altitude of 800 metres, and in an area with constant weather shifts that have made work difficult, large wind turbines have been erected: 56-metre blades, nacelles weighing 126 tonnes and towers between 80 and 93 metres high. The construction of all these projects, with an investment of EUR 100 million, contributes to boosting the industrial fabric and local employment, involving as many as 1,000 workers. Once in operation, the wind farms will generate energy to supply more than 100,000 homes and avoid the emission of 65,500 tonnes CO2 per year into the atmosphere.
