    ?Polestar zal de investeringen in zijn Britse activiteiten verhogen, voornamelijk onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsdivisie in de buurt van Coventry in de West Midlands en verhogen van 280 ingenieurs naar 500, omdat het ernaar streeft het chassis van zijn auto zo licht mogelijk te maken om het zware gewicht van de batterijen van de auto te compenseren. bit.ly/3BncEjX?

    Ja, mooi.
    Aluminium wordt hiervoor gebruikt. Persoonlijk vroeg ik me wel af hoe Polestar zijn image hoog houdt als het om duurzaamheid gaat.
    Aluminium winnen en fabriceren is een zeer veel energievragend en milieuvervuilend proces momenteel.
    Het kan een valkuil voor ze zijn. Hopelijk nemen ze dit mee!

    SSAB Joins Forces with Polestar to Develop Climate-Neutral Car

    Swedish steel maker SSAB & electric car company Polestar have signed a letter of intent to start strategic collaboration to create a climate-neutral car. The vehicle will be developed in close cooperation in a joint effort to advance climate mitigation and to create more sustainable mobility. The Polestar 0 project, announced in 2021, aims to create a climate-neutral car by 2030 by eliminating emissions from the supply chain. Steel has a decisive role in achieving this goal and thus in offsetting the transport sector’s major climate footprint. The collaboration will explore all the possibilities for SSAB’s fossil-free steel, both with the aim to replace conventional steel normally used in cars, as well as to seek to replace other materials that have a significant carbon footprint.

    SSAB aims to be the first steel company in the world to deliver, in 2026, fossil-free steel to the market. In January 2022, SSAB took a policy decision to fundamentally transform Nordic strip production and accelerate the company’s green transition. The decision was taken against the background of strongly growing demand for fossil-free steel. The ambition is to largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions in around 2030, 15 years earlier than previously announced. In 2021, SSAB signed a number of strategic partnerships for fossil-free steel with customers such as Volvo Group, Volvo Cars, Cargotec, Daimler/Mercedes and Peab.

    Polestar Light Weighting with Bonded Aluminium Unibody

    Polestar announced that bonded aluminium unibody technology does away with the mixed metal structures and the 3,500-4,000 rivets normally used in traditional manufacturing, making use of adhesive and oven curing instead. While boasting some serious advantages, it has previously proven difficult for mass production. Both labour-intensive and challenging to scale up without sacrificing quality, bonded aluminium has been restricted to the rarefied air of low-volume performance cars. That is, until the Polestar UK R&D team developed a new method, applying their combined experience from the worlds of Formula 1 and bespoke sports cars to create a process which develops both body and platform in unison.

    This combined Polestar 5 platform and body is predicted to weigh less than cars from smaller segments, increasing range and responsiveness while maintaining the highest safety standards. Additionally, this innovation allows for a high degree of design flexibility, as adjustments for factors like different wheelbases can be achieved with comparative ease.

    This is Polestar’s first in-house platform, developed to the same exacting standards as everything else Polestar. This enables the creation of a production car (Polestar 5) that is as close as possible to the concept car (Polestar Precept) that inspired it.

    Gisteren cijfers binnengekomen Lucid:

    LCID LucidMotors: Valued at 47B, Sold 125 cars in 2021. Productie 2022 ook naar onder bijgesteld. Nabeurs gisteren -14%.
    GGPI/PSNY PolestarCars: Valued at ~20B, Sold 29,000 cars in 2021.

    Misschien 'appels met peren' vergelijken, maar zegt iets over de mogelijkheden GGPI/PSNY.

    Merger-datum announcement moet toch binnenkort komen. Tbc.

    NB: ik denk dat veel LCID aandeelhouders cashen en overstappen naar GGPI dezer dagen, als ik de stemming op bv Twitter zie.

    Polestar O2: Electric Roadster Concept Car With Integrated Drone

    Electric vehicle company Polestar—a joint venture between Volvo and Geely—has made some buzz with its first two performance EVs so far: Polestar 1 and Polestar 2. But the launch of its sleek new roadster concept, Polestar O2, might just blow the rest out the water. This hard-top convertible is Polestar’s version of an open-top sports car. It’ll give customers an exciting driving experience, coupled with the benefits of an electric drivetrain, and even has a hidden drone than can be deployed while driving.     “Polestar O2 is the hero car for our brand,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s CEO. “This is a taste of what we can design and engineer with the talent and technology we have in-house. It looks incredible, and being able to lower the roof and not hear an engine promises a superb sensation.”

    Classic 2+2 Design

    The compact, angular design is reminiscent of many classic targa top internal combustion sports cars (think Lotus Elise, Fiat X1/9, and Ferrari F355). It’s got a low, aggressive stance; long wheelbase; and short overhangs. Not to mention you get the blistering performance of an EV motor with the thrill that comes with planting that power to the road with a tightly tuned suspension.

    “Polestar O2 is our vision of a new era for sports cars,” says Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s head of design. “By mixing the joy of open top driving with the purity of electric mobility, it unlocks a new mix of emotions in a car. But as with all our cars, we are about more than just straight-line sprints. It’s when you turn the steering wheel that the true fun begins.”

    Driving the O2 is designed to offer a spirited, taut, and lively experience due to it being constructed around a bonded aluminum platform with small roll angles, high roll damping, and linear direct steering.

    Aerodynamics, a key factor in building an efficient e-vehicle, are tweaked to maximize range with features like integrated ducts to improve laminar air flow and rear lights that act as air blades to dampen turbulence coming off the back of the car.

    Arguably the most exciting feature of the Polestar O2 concept is the autonomous drone integrated behind the rear seats. The drone isn’t just designed for recording a roadside attraction, it can actually be deployed while the car is in motion, all the better to record your enthusiastic motoring down twisty roads and scenic locales.

    “We wanted to emphasize the experience you can have with a car like the Polestar O2 in new and unusual ways,” continues Missoni. “Integrating an autonomous cinematic drone was something that allowed us to push the boundaries on the innovation front. Not needing to stop and off-load the drone before filming, but rather deploying it at speed, is a key benefit to this innovative design.”

    And to get the drone safely up, up, and away, Polestar engineers developed a special airfoil that raises behind the rear seats to create a calm area of negative pressure, allowing the drone to securely take to the skies. In the air, the drone operates autonomously, automatically following the car at speeds up to 56 mph. The driver can then choose between two sequences—atmospheric or action—to dial in the perfect drive time footage. After filming, the drone can autonomously return to its hidden home in the rear of the car. Video clips can be edited and shared directly from the 15-inch center display when parked.

    An Environmentally Friendly EV

    Switching from burning fossil fuels to battery power is the main eco-conscious claim for EVs, but the Polestar O2 also has a few more environmentally friendly features like a new, single-base thermoplastic that’s used extensively throughout the interior to limit dependence on many types of plastic. Recycled polyester is the only material used for all the soft components of the interior like foam, adhesive, knit fibers, and lamination to help simplify recycling and reduce weight and waste.

    The aluminum used in the chassis is also looped into making recycling the metal more efficient as the different grades are labeled, allowing them to be recycled more effectively and for their properties to be retained.

    Future Polestar Plans

    Polestar plans to launch three new cars over the next three years, starting in 2022. And all of them have the potential to build upon some of the ideas presented by the Polestar O2 and previous Polestar Precept concept car.

    Polestar presenteert de O2 Concept. Daarmee toont het merk hoe een volledig elektrische roadster van Polestar ongeveer eruit kan zien. Ook etaleert Polestar hiermee zijn vooruitstrevende aanpak op het gebied van materiaalkeuze.

    Polestar timmert behoorlijk aan de weg. Na de nog op Volvo-concepten gebaseerde Polestar 1 en Polestar 2 verschijnen de komende jaren drie modellen die het zelf vorm heeft gegeven. Eerst is het de beurt aan de Polestar 3, een 'performance-SUV', daarna komt de Polestar 4, een compactere SUV-achtige met een schuin aflopende daklijn, en tenslotte de Polestar 5, een strak gelijnde vierdeurs GT. De '5' wordt grofweg de productieversie van de in 2020 onthulde Precept Concept, maar ook de Polestars 3 en 4 ontlenen veel van hun lijnenspel van de Precept Concept. Polestar borduurt nu nog eens voort op die eigen designtaal met deze O2 Concept.

    Polestar O2 Concept

    Vierzits 'roadster'
    In één oogopslag is te zien dat de O2 Concept sterk op de Precept lijkt. Met zijn in twee delen verdeelde koplampen en scherp gevormde doch minimalistische neus. Ook aan de achterkant zijn de overeenkomsten treffend. Net als de Precept Concept heeft de O2 Concept één ononderbroken ledbalk als achterlicht, die op de hoeken abrupt naar beneden duikt. Wat er in het midden van de auto gebeurt, is echter totaal anders. De O2 Concept is namelijk geen vierdeurs GT maar een heuse vierzits roadster. Polestar opent met de O2 Concept dus weer een nieuw hoofdstuk. "De Polestar O2 is het toonbeeld van de visie van Polestar op open rijden en een opwindende rijkwaliteit – met alle voordelen van elektrische mobiliteit", aldus het Zweeds-Chinese merk.

    Met een conceptauto is alles mogelijk en dat maakt dat Polestar van het dak een behoorlijke blikvanger heeft kunnen maken. Het is namelijk een grotendeels glazen dak, dat zo te zien in zijn geheel van de auto is te halen. Voorzichtig ergens neerzetten zonder het glas te beschadigen lijkt ons een aardig uitdaging, maar het ziet er in ieder geval spectaculair uit. In het interieur is het minimalisme dat hoogtij viert. Net als bij de Precept Concept - daar is-ie weer - heeft de O2 Concept een strak en opgeruimd dashboard, dat enkel onderbroken wordt door een centraal geplaatst verticaal 15-inch display. Daarop is vrijwel alles te bedienen, maar er zijn ook nog stuurhendels aanwezig. Achter het stuur schuilt een betrekkelijk klein display voor het digitale instrumentarium.

    Polestar O2 Concept

    Een leuke gimmick: de O2 Concept heeft een eigen filmdrone aan boord. De achterbank kan tijdens het rijden iets omhoog komen om een zone van onderdruk te creëren, zodat de drone tijdens het rijden kan opstijgen zonder direct weg te waaien. De drone kan vervolgens tot een snelheid van 90 km/h autonoom de auto volgen en opnames maken. Hij keert ook zelf weer terug naar de auto en uploadt vervolgens de beelden, die je vervolgens op het centrale display kunt bekijken en bewerken. Influencers kunnen hun hart ophalen.

    Nieuwe basis
    De O2 Concept lijkt niet alleen in veel opzichten op de Precept Concept, maar deelt ook zijn technische basis ermee. Of beter gezegd, met de productieversie van de Precept. Het gaat namelijk om een nieuw platform dat specifiek door Polestar is ontwikkeld voor de Polestar 5. Eerder gaf Polestar al aan dat deze basis, die grotendeels is opgetrokken uit 'gelijmd aluminium', de stijfheid moet bieden die je verwacht van een supercar. Polestar stelt dat de O2 Concept bewijst dat 'ouderwets' rijplezier niet verloren hoeft te gaan bij een elektrische aandrijflijn. Polestar belooft een 'hoge rijdynamiek' en bovendien een auto die ondanks zijn ongetwijfeld relatief hoge gewicht niet zo zwaar aanvoelt.
    CEO Thomas Ingenlath laat tegenover onder meer AutoWeek los dat de O2 Concept ondanks zijn kortere wielbasis in theorie hetzelfde accupakket als de Polestar 5 kan huisvesten. Die heeft volgens hem een capaciteit van 'ruim 100 kWh'. Ook vertelt de topman ons dat de O2 Concept in theorie vierwielaangedreven is. Helaas wil hij verder niet uitweiden over de elektrische krachten. Voor de Polestar 5 zetten we in ieder geval in op een topuitvoering met een vermogen van (ruim) 500 pk, die in 2 à 3 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/h schiet. De O2 Concept geldt vooralsnog enkel als een ontwerpstudie, derhalve zouden prestatiecijfers ook een beetje luchtfietserij zijn, maar zulke prestaties zouden ook goed bij de O2 Concept passen. Mochten deze cijfers werkelijkheid worden, dan zou de O2 Concept ook goed kunnen wedijveren met de op stapel staande Tesla Roadster, die in 2,1 seconden naar de 100 km/h moet schieten.

    Polestar O2 Concept

    Duurzame materialen
    Waar Polestar in ieder geval wel uitgebreid op ingaat, zijn de materialen die voor de O2 Concept gebruikt zijn. Polestar laat zich graag van zijn 'duurzame' kant zien en doet dat (net als bij de Precept Concept) ook met de O2 Concept. Zo is in het interieur een 'thermoplastisch monomateriaal' gebruikt. Eén materiaal voor tal van verschillende onderdelen. Dat moet het recyclen ten goede komen. Er is uitsluitend gebruikgemaakt van gerecycled polyester voor de 'zachte' onderdelen. Al met al moet de O2 Concept een voorbeeld zijn van circulariteit, dat geldt overigens ook voor de gebruikte metalen. De verschillende soorten aluminium in het chassis zijn gelabeld, zodat bij het demonteren van de auto deze ook weer apart kunnen worden verwerkt. Zo vermindert volgens Polestar op den duur de afhankelijkheid van nieuw aluminium.

    Het ziet er allemaal veelbelovend uit, maar wat kunnen we er nou concreet van verwachten? Nou, Polestar stelt vooralsnog dat de O2 Concept samen met de Precept Concept als vooruitblik geldt op de drie nieuwe modellen die er de komende jaren aankomen: de 3, 4 en 5. De Precept wordt de Polestar 5, maar de O2 Concept lijkt dus geen direct productievervolg te krijgen. Jammer?
