Polestar3, the SUV of the electric age made WIRED's list of Best EV’s arriving in 2023!
    www.wired.co.uk/article/the-17-best-e...

You can place orders for the Polestar 3 now, but production won't start till summer 2023. You get the slick Scando design, of course, which helps belie the car's considerable size: 4.9 meters long, 2.1 meters wide—yet it still somehow manages to look sporty. An impressively low drag factor of just 0.29 may help here. Inside, a 14.5-inch touchscreen display runs the Google operating system (still a big plus for Polestar and Volvo), while five radar modules, five external cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors deliver the kind of driver assistance safety features and monitoring you would expect from Volvo's sister marque. You can spec a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system, which will be useful as the 111-kWh battery will carry you up to 379 miles, so you'll be spending a lot of time in the car. You won't be spending a lot of time charging up, since the rapid DC charging speeds of up to 250 kW could mean a 10 to 80 percent top-up will take about 30 minutes. Want speed? The Performance Pack pushes power to 510 hp, torque to 910 Nm, zero to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds, and a top speed limited to 130 mph. Want the seven-seat EX90 Volvo version built on the same platform? You'll have to wait until 2024.

Polestar Automotive Holding leverde ongeveer 21.000 voertuigen in vierde kwartaal

Polestar blasts Toyota’s EV strategy, saying ‘we cannot continue using fossil fuels’
    Peter Johnson

Polestar and Toyota are at two opposite ends of the EV spectrum. The former is building some of the world’s most sustainable electric vehicles, while the latter has been openly opposed to going all-electric. At a recent media briefing, Polestar’s head of sustainability, Fredricka Klaren, took aim at Toyota and its EV strategy (or lack thereof), claiming anything but a fully electric future will fail to address climate change.

“It’s not possible. We cannot continue using fossil fuels,” Klaren responded when asked questions about Toyota’s stance that EVs are not the only way to reduce emissions.

Toyota has consistently stood by its stance, even lobbying against going all in on pure electric vehicles. Instead, it insists on investing in hybrid technology and fuel cells alongside its ICE vehicles.

Despite nearly every other automaker making plans to go fully electric, Toyota is standing by its hybrid strategy. Toyota has one fully electric vehicle, the bZ4X, with 1,220 US sales last year.

Despite the improved electric range on Toyota’s “crown jewel” fifth generation Prius, the hybrid model is quickly becoming the best CD player in a world moving toward iPhones.

Toyota generated less than 1% of total US sales from zero-emission vehicles (not hybrids) and has the least developed supply chain for reducing carbon emissions. As a result, Toyota ranks among the 2022s world’s most obstructive companies on climate policy.

Polestar, on the other hand, aims to build a completely climate-neutral EV with the Polestar 0 project. The EV maker delivered over 50,000 electric vehicles in 2022, solidifying its position as an emerging EV contender. Polestar is calling on the industry to become more transparent about sustainability, and they are not afraid to call out those not assisting in the cause.

At a media briefing this week in Sydney, Klaren said automakers focusing on anything but EVs are taking the wrong approach, adding there’s no place for mass-produced non-EV models after 2030.

Klaren says Polestar is basing its assessments on science, saying:

From our standpoint, our climate strategy is based on the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). It’s a top-down approach. We’ve said that we need to be climate neutral by 2040 as a company and we need to halve emissions by 2030, and that’s not what we can do – that is what the climate scientists are telling us we need to do as companies.

She adds that anyone who claims they will fix it in 2040 or 2050 is not listening because we will have already missed our goal.

We only have seven years left until we hit 1.5 degrees global warming. That’s a fact if we continue on the route we’re heading into. So, anything after 2030, we’re not interested.

In particular, Klaren directed her attention toward Toyota and hybrid technology, saying it alone won’t be good enough.

To me, you’re still putting gasoline in the car, so don’t focus on that technology at all. If you keep focussing [and] having that in your business plan, you’re not going to level up in the way you need to do in terms of this new technology.

Polestar is calling on auto industry leaders to do their part to combat climate change, including setting goals and being transparent about them.

All companies need to have that strategy to enable us to combat climate change in time. So that’s our predicament here. We know this. We know there is no place for non-EVs on a large scale after 2030 in that scenario. But OEMs are locked into their business plans. They plan for a transition and I understand that. But the thing is that the timeline is wrong and it’s not in line with scientists, so what we need to do is tear up those business plans and make new ones.

    Electrek’s Take

Polestar is on to something here. Global CO2 emissions hit a new record high in 2022, and if we continue trending down this path, it could mean more frequent and severe weather like we saw this past year. Floods, droughts, and extreme temperatures not only wreak havoc on communities but also the food supply.

Atmospheric CO2 levels are around 420 ppm, according to the latest measurement from NOAA’s Mauna Loa Baseline Observatory.

For us to maintain a 300 to 350 ppm average atmospheric level as it has been over the past several millennia, something needs to change. The transportation sector is one of, if not the largest, global greenhouse gas contributors.

Polestar is one of the EV makers looking to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future, pushing for transparency across the industry, while Toyota has, for the most part, been dragging its feet.

Rond minuut 36 kort Polestar: beurstalk.com/podcast/as-goes-january...

What’s the best EV for cruising round LA?
Can’t wait to see the Polestar 6 on the road and only 3 years away. Things ramping up at Polestar and the 3,4 and 5 to come first.

    www.topgear.com/car-news/top-gear-adv...

Which is why it’s so easy to get excited about the prospect of the new Polestar 6, the two-door convertible EV that was recently previewed by the O2 concept and subsequently confirmed for a triumphal market debut in 2026.

It’s intriguing to see Polestar proffering up a 6-badged model considering we’re only on number 2 so far, but the 3 SUV arrives on the market this year, then the 4 and 5 in 2024 and 2025. Hard to guess whether they’re actually sequential model numbers or Polestar simply intends to name its cars after their year of launch.

Unlike the next 12 Avatar movies that have been promised, these Polestars have already had a significant amount of work done on them, such are the lead times of the automotive industry. The 6 is significant because we’re well overdue a decent electrically powered convertible. Not since Lotus turned its Elise into an electric roadster for a struggling California start-up have we seen a decent effort at a soft-top EV.

And of course the 6 will come with the usual Polestar commitment to cuddles and fun – the company says that the leather interior will be “animal welfare traced”, which is essentially a cast iron guarantee that whatever cow adorns the inside of the new soft-top died happy. It makes all the difference to a car seat knowing that the bovine skin donor was listening to classical music when it took a bolt gun to the head.

But you’ll likely not care about the provenance of your dash covering and flax-based door panels once you get on the open road to feel the wind in your eyebrows. Polestar says that it is targeting a 0-60mph time of 3.1secs, top speed of 155mph and a 370+mile range from the dual-motor car.

Of course, those tricksy Swedes can say whatever they like about a car that’s still three years away (sounds like a familiar tactic, where do we recognise that from?), but there’s a decent chance that the 6 will come good on at least one of those promised numbers. It’s expected to have wheels, too, and doors, if only to prove how serious the team behind this car really is.

So if you really fancy cruising round Los Angeles in the new Polestar 6 you can take its guaranteed environmentally friendly high-performance coolness to the bank. But we’d still book a refundable plane ticket just to be on the safe side.

Polestar 3 proves EVs don’t need front grilles, going from ‘breathing to seeing’
    Peter Johnson

    electrek.co/2023/01/19/polestar-3-bre...

Polestar is defying the odds in the new era of electric vehicles. The company’s first electric SUV, the Polestar 3, is, indeed, a vehicle for the modern era, proving EVs don’t need a front grille with what it calls the “SmartZone.”

Polestar 3 shows we don’t need grilles in the EV era

The Polestar 3 was officially unveiled a few months ago with a range of up to 300 miles and a starting price of $83,900. The electric SUV incorporates a unique Scandinavian minimalist design featuring a new aerodynamic profile and a powerful, wide stance.

The design team was tasked with creating something visually familiar to buyers by incorporating the hallmarks of an SUV and bringing it into the modern, electric era. That means the front grille as well.

The front grille served a purpose in gas-powered vehicles, acting as an airway to keep the engine from overheating. Now that the auto industry is undergoing a massive transformation from combustion to fully electric, everything is changing.

Most automakers have tried to redesign ICE vehicles to align with (what they assume) buyers are interested in.

Polestar is taking a different approach by replacing the front grille with what it calls the “SmartZone.” Thomas Ingelath explained how the Polestar 3 is built for the modern era, saying:
This car has been designed as a Polestar from the start and features new defining characteristics for us – like the dual blade headlights, SmartZone and front aero wing.

As standard, the Polestar 3 features five radar modules, five external cameras, and twelve external ultrasonic sensors to support user safety.

However, the SmartZone, located below the front aero wing, features several forward-facing sensors, a front-facing radar, heating wires, accelerometers, and ultrasonic sensors. The SmartZone essentially operates as a third “smart eye,” bringing advanced awareness, prevention, and protection with ready-to-react technology.

As the Exterior Designer Subum Lee puts it, the Polestar 3 goes from:
Polestar wanted to showcase the technology rather than trying to hide it behind a fake grille, which the company says “shows the paradigm shift going from combustion to electrification.” Check out the full video below as Lee explains the Polestar 3’s SmartZone.
    youtu.be/HiQCJfVIguk

The Polestar 3 is a beautiful EV inside and out. There’s no denying that. Perhaps, more importantly, the automaker is proving people want sustainable, zero-emission vehicles, even if they are “built for the modern era” with unique designs.

I, for one, am a big fan of the Polestar 3’s design, especially the front. The sleek, aerodynamic look does not need a front grille. Polestar is challenging itself and the auto industry to improve by accelerating the change to a fully electric, zero-emission future.

The EV maker continues expanding and is now sold in 27 countries across the globe. Watch out for Polestar in 2023. The company is making big moves.

Polestar builds Finnish three-storey-tall showroom out of snow
Ever felt the itch to test drive an EV north of the Arctic Circle? The automaker's "Snow Space" is open until the end of February

When you consider that one-third of the country of Sweden lies within the Arctic Circle, you may not be all that surprised to hear Swedish EV automaker Polestar’s newest showroom, too, sits north of the 66°33' latitude line. You might be a little surprised to hear said showroom is in neighbouring Finland, though. And you’ll almost certainly be surprised to hear the new three-storey-tall showroom is made entirely out of snow.

Don’t call it an igloo — the automaker’s “first-of-a-kind retail Snow Space” resembles a giant cube and stands 12 metres (39 feet) tall, its two-metre-thick (6.5-feet-thick) walls constructed using 3,000 cubic meters (105,944 cubic feet) of snow taken from the Finnish ski resort of Ounasvaara.

Inside, visitors will find replicas of various Polestar vehicle components – wheels, suspension parts, and brakes – crafted out of ice by local artists, as well as one of the company’s (non-ICE, er, non-ice) Polestar 2 EVs. You can book test drives at the Space, but you can’t buy a car there — all Polestar sales are still online-only.

The unique Polestar Space – the company has some 130 such retail outlets worldwide – was designed by Polestar architects and built by Finnish firm Frozen Innovation in 20 days. It’s the second Polestar Space in the country, but it won’t be for long. After opening last week on January 10, it’ll host visitors only until February 26, when its snow walls will be turned back into ski slopes.

If you want to check out the company’s offerings here in Canada, Polestar has three Spaces across the country, in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. We expect you won’t be surprised to hear each of those much more permanent showrooms are built mostly from conventional materials, though, not snow — we blame the unseasonably warm winter, here.

I've been part of the Driving.ca team for five years, but have been writing about cars for more than twice that. Classics – like my first and currently only car, my 1971 Plymouth Valiant Scamp – are my favourite, but I love learning and writing about vehicular history, automotive design, and car culture.
