Tesla may be the only remaining company opting for a camera-only system. To illustrate this, I will refer to Intel (INTC) Mobileye’s evolution. Mobileye was, aside from Tesla, the only major proponent of a camera-first approach. However, this changed a few years ago. Since then, Mobileye has evolved to what it calls ‘True Redundancy’: it is effectively developing two separate autonomous driving systems, one based solely on camera, and one based solely on lidar and radar. It intends to combine these at the end of development. By having two independent subsystems, the overall reliability of the system will be substantially improved, even compared to the most used alternative multi-sensor approach, which is called ‘sensor fusion’. (In the latter approach, there is only one system, and the different sensors are combined to create one model.) Moreover, Mobileye announced at CES 2021 that it will in fact evolve from two to three independent subsystems by the time it will reach production for consumer AVs (as opposed to robotaxis): it will further split the lidar and radar into their own separate systems. This is the exact opposite of Tesla which just announced it intends to remove radar altogether. This leads to the core argument/insight, which is that an autonomous driving system is all about reliability. AVs have been tested on the road for many years already. The Google (GOOG) self-driving project started over a decade ago. This means autonomous driving has already been proved on the road with millions of kilometers, and in simulation with billions of kilometers. This, however, implies that despite all these efforts and years of development, not a single company has yet been able to validate its system reliability for a global, high volume rollout. As mentioned, that is despite the use of dozens of sensors, sensor fusion or redundancy, and deep learning algorithms running on powerful hardware. This means an AV system should not just 'work'. It should work pretty much flawlessly. From that view, Tesla's claim that it can achieve, with only cameras, what others haven't yet been able to achieve with many other sensors, is quite a big one. The company that has arguably progressed the most is Mobileye. Its timeline is to start its robotaxi program in Israel, in early 2022, and further scale this to multiple other geographies globally through 2022 and 2023. This leads to the last argument against Tesla’s approach. As Mobileye also explained at CES 2021, it is able to target such a global rollout in the next two years due to another key technology, which is its crowdsourced HD map (called REM). I will refer to the CES presentation for the full dive into this technology, but in short, the map has an accuracy of about 10cm, and serves as another key pillar to achieve L4-5 without being constrained to small, geofenced areas: although pretty much everyone uses maps, only Mobileye has been able to build a global map due to its crowdsourcing ability. Mobileye remains the only company with such a map. To be sure, such maps are not absolutely required: Mobileye's maps are created using the same cameras that its AV system relies on during operation. In other words, the maps do not necessarily contain anything that an AV couldn’t figure out (in real-time) while it is driving. However, the value of such a map (whether is a crowdsourced map or a geofenced map created with dedicated mapping vehicles) is that it provides the AV with additional information, which further increases the reliability of the system. For example, accuracy can be increased by leveraging 'wisdom of the crowd' by combining the data from multiple passages. In fact, Mobileye’s CEO argued at CES that AI or deep learning simply hasn’t progressed yet to the point that it could reliably achieve L4-L5 without using any maps at all. Such a statement is evidently not in Tesla’s favor, as it quite literally implies that Tesla’s system may never work. (As explained above, not because it can't drive autonomously, but because it won't be able to do so while meeting reliability and safety requirements for commercialization.) As it stands, though, there seems a reasonable likelihood that Tesla’s system simply will never become reliable enough given that it doesn’t have HD maps and neither does not it have sensor redundancy. For comparison, Mobileye will have both maps and three fully redundant, independent sensor systems. Around the time of writing this, it was also announced that Lyft (LYFT) was selling its own self-driving unit, a few quarters after Uber (UBER) had already done the same. This further shows that only few may ultimately succeed in this space; so given the above discussion investors shouldn't assume that Tesla FSD is all but guaranteed yet at this point.seekingalpha.com/article/4421854-tesl...

HUAWEI Octopus, an open autonomous driving platform HUAWEI Octopus leverages massive data, HD map, and advanced algorithms to build a data-driven, closed-loop platform for intelligent driving. Relying on its vehicle-cloud synergy, industry-leading annotation capacity, upgraded virtual simulation, and one-stop secure, compliant cloud services, HUAWEI Octopus is designed to help OEMs build autonomous driving development capabilities from scratch, lower development requirements, and improve development efficiency. Cloud is the only bridge between autonomous driving development and its commercialization. Vehicles in all regions must be connected to the local cloud to help resolve the coverage, security, and scalability issues that come with commercializing autonomous driving. By migrating data to cloud, developers no longer need to worry about expanding equipment rooms to accommodate larger volumes of data, allowing them to focus more on core algorithm development. HD maps are also a vital element for autonomous driving. In preparation for this, Huawei officially announced its latest HD map cloud service capability and roadmap at the product launch. Currently, Huawei has obtained grade-A surveying and mapping qualification to produce electronic navigation maps and developed comprehensive HD map data collection and mapping capabilities.www.prnewswire.com/in/news-releases/h...

Buffett loves Garmin Garmin (NASDAQ: GRMN) makes high-tech devices for outdoor enthusiasts including pilots, boaters, hikers, hunters, and runners. The company actually has a lot in common with Apple. Buffett loves companies that generate tons of cash that can be reinvested to grow the business. Apple certainly qualifies, and so does Garmin, which generated $387 million in free cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2020, and ended last year with about $3 billion in cash and marketable securities. The company's cash position equates to approximately 11% of its market cap. Apple's almost $200 billion of cash on its balance sheet makes up less than 9% of its market cap. bron:www.nasdaq.com/articles/3-stocks-warr...
Klasse Dutchy Ron. Tesla may be the only remaining company opting for a camera-only system. To illustrate this, I will refer to Intel (INTC) Mobileye’s evolution.

Garmin slaat daarbij drie vliegen in 1 klap.
