    Volgens mij vrij solide resultaten, zie weinig bijzonderheden. Resultaat wordt sterk gedrukt door overnamekosten, maar daarvoor gecorrigeerd lijkt het allemaal in lijn der verwachtingen. Verwacht geen grote koersreactie morgen. Blijft toch wel een zeer klein en illiquide aandeel met weinig coverage (wat in beginsel jammer is, want heeft sterke positie in een niche markt).

    Als we goed naar de p&l kijken dan ziet er het er eigenlijk best goed uit! De operating profit (gecorrigeerd voor aquisitie integratie, herstructureringskosten) komt uit op € 704.000 tov € 392.000 vorig jaar.

    Wat PM vooral opvalt is dat de proventuele marge (gross profit) sterk verbeterd is (72,14% in HJ1 2021 tov 65,9 % in HJ1 2020 en 69,66 % 2020 full year door verschuiving van print naar online books. Dat is een gunstige ontwikkeling uiteraard en gaat uiteindelijk bijdragen in het bottom line resultaat!

    Het is dus geduld betrachten bij Brill maar op lange termijn heeft bedrijf wel potentie!

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Brill is in de eerste helft van 2021 in de rode cijfers gedoken op een hogere omzet, vanwege een reeks eenmalige kosten in verband met de overname van Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. Dit bleek donderdag nabeurs uit de halfjaarcijfers van de wetenschappelijke uitgever.

    CEO Peter Coebergh zei in een toelichting op de cijfers dat de overname van Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht in februari het hoogtepunten van de eerste helft van dit jaar was. Coebergh zei ook dat de integratie van het bedrijf volgens schema verloopt. De bestuurder is bovendien tevreden over de onderliggende omzet- en winstontwikkelingen in het afgelopen halfjaar.

    Brill boekte in de eerste zes maanden van 2021 een bedrijfsresultaat (EBITDA) van 1,7 miljoen euro, in vergelijking met 1,3 miljoen euro in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Onder de streep resteerde een nettoverlies van 42.000 euro, tegenover een winst van 120.000 euro in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder.

    De daling is het resultaat van eenmalige acquisitie-, intergratie- en herstructureringskosten van 618.000 euro.

    De omzet steeg de afgelopen verslagperiode van 16,2 miljoen euro in de eerste helft van 2020 naar 19,3 miljoen euro het afgelopen halfjaar.

    Outlook

    Het bedrijf zei voorzichtig te zijn met het verstrekken van prognoses voor het hele boekjaar, maar zei wel dat de pijplijn voor productreleases er voor de tweede helft van het jaar goed uitzien, evenals [door het coronavirus] uitgestelde inkomsten en verkoopkansen.

    Brill verwacht dit jaar een autonome omzetgroei te realiseren, terwijl de nettowinst ten opzichte van vorig jaar lager zal uitkomen vanwege de verwachte integratiekosten van 1 miljoen euro door de overname van V&R.

    Brill publishes New Open Access Journal Al-Markaz with the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre

    Brill, the international scholarly publisher, has signed an agreement with the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) to publish a new Open Access journal. The journal, entitled Al-Markaz: Majallat al-Dirasat al-?Arabiyya (The Centre: Journal of Arabic Studies), will be published by Brill as of 2022.

    Al-Markaz is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering the best of current research on Arabic language, literature and culture, publishing two issues per year, fully in Arabic. It covers a chronological from before Islam to contemporary times. All contributions will be published in Diamond Open Access with Brill: the article is immediately available in Open Access, without a fee from the author (or their institution).

    Brill adds Diaspora Studies to its Journal Portfolio

    Brill is excited to announce important updates from the Diaspora Studies journal. Since its first issue in 2007, the journal has become a leading platform for innovative and global scholarship on diasporas, particularly in connection with international relations, economics, politics, public policy, development studies, as well as identity, history, and critical theory, often from a comparative perspective. The journal has also proudly featured scholars based in the Global South.

    Previously published by Taylor & Francis, Diaspora Studies will be part of Brill’s portfolio from 2022 onwards as of volume 15, and will become available online and in print. All previously published volumes will be available from Brill as well.
    Transition to Brill
    The transition to Brill brings at least three improvements:
    • From currently 2 issues per year, the journal will now publish 4 issues;
    • A fair fee structure provides privileged access in the Global South;
    • A flexible system allows Open Access publication.

    These changes provide more opportunities to publish and disseminate research. Please see the Call for Papers below.

    New editorial team
    Diaspora Studies has appointed a new editorial team and a new and expanded board, which reflects its global and multidisciplinary focus.

    Founding editor-in-chief, Ajay Dubey (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India) will continue in this position, supported by Daniel Naujoks (Columbia University, US) as editor, Amit Singh (Delhi University, India) as book reviews editor, and three associate editors:, Ayça Arkiliç (Victoria University of Wellington/Te Herenga Waka, New Zealand), Dženeta Karabegovic (University of Salzburg, Austria) and Jyoti Tyagi (Migration and Diaspora Institute, India).

    Brill launches the Brill Book Archive

The archive offers researchers the opportunity to explore three centuries of academic excellence in the Humanities, Social Sciences, International Law and Biology. It allows libraries to continue to build a permanent record of academic literature that is accessible and sustainable for generations.

    Brill's Chief Publishing Officer Jasmin Lange, says: “Brill has been a trusted partner of researchers and libraries for hundreds of years. We had the honor to publish iconic authors who have made a lasting impact and have been an inspiration for researchers until today. Book series such as the Handbook of Oriental Studies, Sinica Leidensia, International Studies in Human Rights or History of Warfare provide foundational research which will allow researchers to deep dive in the history of the Humanities and Social Sciences.     Brill profit levels and organic growth in line with expectations, integration V&R
    according to plan and continuation of eBusiness growth
    Update on year-to-date performance
    During the third quarter Brill’s eBusiness continued its strong growth, driven by eBooks and digital primary sources.
    This growth compensated for the ongoing decline in print books. YTD Journal sales declined mainly due to delayed
    invoicing,which is expected to be recovered in Q4, and continuing IT problems at our UK based distributor.Overall
    Brill’s revenues including the acquisition of Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht and Böhlau Verlag (V&R) are clearly ahead
    of last year.
    Cost of goods sold improved slightly as a result of the migration from print to eBooks. Operating costs were in line
    with expectations. Year to date EBITDA, operating profit and net profit have developed as planned.
    The integration of V&R runs according to plan. Both the Brill as well as the V&R teams and staff are now part of one
    global matrix organization. Various integration projects in IT, production, distribution, publishing and sales are
    underway. Management closely leads and monitors the integration and is pleased with the progress and the results
    of the acquired V&R business so far.
    In August, Brill acquired the journal Folia Primatologica from Karger Publishing, an important addition to our
    Biology portfolio.
    At the end of Q3 Brill’s Book Archive was launched, a digital archive expanding our eBook list with more than 6,000
    back list titles in 2021. The first sales are expected in Q4.
    FY Outlook
    The COVID-19 pandemic continues to make market circumstances difficult and unpredictable. In Asia important
    countries are still in lockdown and (intercontinental) travel is still difficult or impossible, limiting our staff to visit
    authors, conferences and customers in person. The shortages in the global supply chains are hampering Brill as
    well, to the extent that this may have a negative impact on the results of the important 4th quarter and could affect
    our top- and bottom line negatively.

    Brill rekent op negatieve impact problemen aanvoerketen
    Invloed op omzet en winst niet uitgesloten.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Het belangrijke vierde kwartaal voor Brill zal mogelijk negatief worden beïnvloed door de wereldwijde problemen in de aanvoerketen. Dit zei de wetenschappelijke uitgever uit Leiden donderdag in een update over het derde kwartaal.

    Brill sluit niet uit dat de leveringsproblemen de winst en omzet in het huidige kwartaal negatief zullen raken. Bij het publiceren van de halfjaarcijfers in augustus was het bedrijf al voorzichtig om prognoses te geven, maar gaf toen wel aan dat de pijplijn voor productreleases er voor de tweede helft van het jaar goed uitzag.

    Naast de problemen in de aanvoerketen zorgt de coronacrisis ook nog altijd voor moeilijke en onvoorspelbare marktomstandigheden, aldus Brill.

    In het derde kwartaal zette de eBusiness van Brill zijn sterke groei door, hetgeen een aanhoudende krimp bij gedrukte boeken compenseerde, zei het bedrijf. De omzet, inclusief de overname van V&R, is duidelijk hoger dan in dezelfde periode vorig jaar.

    De operationele kosten waren in het derde kwartaal in lijn met de verwachting van Brill en de EBITDA, operationele winst en nettowinst ontwikkelden zich ook volgens plan, zei het bedrijf donderdag. Dat geldt ook voor de integratie van het overgenomen V&R.

    Het aandeel Brill sloot donderdag vlak op 22,80 euro.

    Brill vreest negatieve impact van verstoringen mondiale toeleveringsketens

    Koninklijke Brill, de beursgenoteerde wetenschappelijke uitgeverij uit Leiden, is bezorgd over de problemen in de wereldwijde toeleveringsketens. In een trading update schrijft Brill dat deze een negatieve impact kunnen hebben op de resultaten in het lopende, en doorgaans belangrijke vierde kwartaal.

    Naast de problemen in de aanvoerketen zorgt de coronacrisis ook nog altijd voor moeilijke en onvoorspelbare marktomstandigheden, aldus Brill. 'In Azië zijn belangrijke landen nog steeds in lockdown en (intercontinentaal) reizen is nog steeds moeilijk of onmogelijk', schrijft cfo Wim Dikstaal. 'Hierdoor is het voor ons personeel lastig auteurs, conferenties en klanten persoonlijk te bezoeken.' Daar staat tegenover dat de uitgever op reiskosten bespaart.

    E-books
    De coronacrisis heeft voor een versnelling van de overgang van papieren boeken naar e-boeken gezorgd. In het derde kwartaal zette de e-business van Brill dan ook zijn sterke groei door, aldus Dikstaal. Dit compenseert een aanhoudende krimp bij gedrukte boeken. De omzet ligt na drie kwartalen duidelijk boven die in dezelfde periode vorig jaar, mede ook dankzij de acquisitie eerder dit jaar van de Duitse wetenschappelijke uitgeverij Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht.

    De operationele kosten waren in het derde kwartaal in lijn met de verwachting van het bedrijf, dat niet aangeeft waar het concreet op mikt. De brutobedrijfswinst, operationele winst en nettowinst ontwikkelden zich ook volgens plan, aldus het Leidse bedrijf dat al sinds 1683 bestaat en vooral bekend is van wetenschappelijke uitgaven op het gebied van de oriëntalistiek, de klassieke letteren, biologie, China- en Islamstudies. In de eerste helft van dit jaar zette Brill €19,3 mln om.

    Op de beurs zijn donderdag 471 stukken Brill in andere handen overgegaan, maar het aandeel eindigde onveranderd op €22,80. Tot dusver heeft Brill dit jaar 27% aan marktwaarde gewonnen.
