    Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates By Half Percentage Point

    WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve cut its benchmark rate by a half percentage point on Tuesday morning, delivering a booster shot to stem potential economic disruptions from the spreading coronavirus epidemic.

    Tuesday's cut, which lowered the federal-funds rate to a range between 1% and 1.25%, is the first to occur in between a scheduled policy meeting since the 2008 financial crisis.

    The action was approved unanimously. In a statement, the central bank also held out the prospect for further stimulus. "The committee is closely monitoring developments and their implications for the economic outlook and will use its tools and act as appropriate to support the economy.," the statement said.

    2,5 milj. volume en omlaag terwijl corona tot het verleden behoort en dan ook nog een renteverlaging, het kan niet op! Het riekt aan bepaalde kanten, maar dat behoort tot de complottheorie volgens een aantal lezers. Samen met de rose brillenboer de enige roden van de amx.

    New cases of the novel coronavirus in New York and Georgia pushed the number of infected people in the U.S. to 106 Tuesday, as the number of confirmed cases outside of mainland China crossed 10,000.

    On Tuesday, New York confirmed its second case of the viral infection. The patient, who lives in Westchester County, remains hospitalized in New York City and is in serious condition, according to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

    Two Georgians, who are members of the same Atlanta-area household, recently tested positive for the virus, Gov. Brian Kemp said at a press briefing on Monday night. The two, who had recently been to Italy, have shown only mild symptoms and are being isolated at home with other relatives while contact tracing is conducted, according to a statement.

    More than 50 people have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus within the U.S., excluding those repatriated from China and Japan. Over the past day, new cases were also reported in five other states. Six people have died in the U.S. after contracting Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

    In China, the coronavirus killed a further 31 people, bringing the death toll to 2,943. But the country reported just 125 new confirmed infections, the lowest number since nationwide daily updates began Jan. 21. Most of the latest fatalities were in Hubei province, the epicenter of the epidemic.

    With the virus now spreading faster outside China than within, local officials in eastern Zhejiang province reported that all of its seven new cases were individuals recently back from northern Italy.

    Italy on Tuesday reported about a 20% increase in new cases to a total of 2,036, by far the largest number in Europe, and its death toll rose to 52.

    South Korea -- the worst-hit country outside China -- reported another surge in infections on Tuesday. Most of the 851 new cases were in the southern city of Daegu, where the outbreak centers on a secretive megachurch. Confirmed cases in South Korea now number 5,186, with 31 deaths.

    Just two weeks ago there were fewer than 50 confirmed infections there. President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday said the epidemic has reached a critical phase and the country has begun a "war" against Covid-19. He said the government intends to spend 30 trillion won ($25 billion) on virus response, and described the economic situation as grave.

    Iran's health ministry said the number of deaths from the coronavirus there rose to 77 on Tuesday, up from 66 a day earlier. The number of confirmed cases rose 56% to 2,336.

    Globally, the coronavirus has infected 90,926 people since it was first identified in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019, but 53% of them have recovered, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. A total of 3,117 coronavirus patients have died.

    On Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of Australia became the first central bank in a developed economy to cut interest rates in response to economic pressures caused by the coronavirus epidemic. It lowered its benchmark rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a record-low 0.5%.

    U.S. President Donald Trump called on the Federal Reserve to cut interest-rates in response to the virus. "Australia's Central Bank cut interest rates and stated it will most likely further ease in order to make up for China's Coronavirus situation and slowdown," Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter. "Our Federal Reserve has us...paying higher rates than many others, when we should be paying less," he added.

    More than a third of Australia's exports go to China, where a sharp slowdown in economic activity and snarled logistics networks are hurting demand for commodities and raw materials.

    Several multinational companies warned of financial hits from the coronavirus. Payment processor Visa Inc. blamed a sharp slowdown in travel spending for a cut to its first-quarter revenue forecasts and said "the deteriorating trend has not bottomed out yet." Hyatt Hotels Corp. withdrew its 2020 financial outlook, saying it expects reduced travel to hurt sales.

    As infection rates in China have slowed, businesses there are gradually resuming more activities. Apple Inc.'s main iPhone assembler, Foxconn Technology Group, said it expects the number of workers at its plants in mainland China to return to normal levels by the end of March if the epidemic doesn't worsen.

    Finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of Seven countries on Tuesday said they stand ready to cooperate on actions, including fiscal stimulus measures, to guard against economic risks from the spreading coronavirus.

    "Given the potential impacts of Covid-19 on global growth, we reaffirm our commitment to use all appropriate policy tools to achieve strong, sustainable growth and safeguard against downside risks," the group said Tuesday following a morning conference call.

    The statement stopped short of stating specific actions countries might take in response to the virus.

    Het is mogelijk dat er door meerdere partijen grote aantallen worden opgebouwd tot net onder de meldingsplicht en dat deze later zullen worden samengevoegd bij een overname bod, anders kan ik deze buitensporige aantallen van al meer dan een week niet plaatsen, gaat morgen gewoon weer door. Nu maar wachten of deze theorie juist is.

    Fed verlaagt plotseling rente

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Federal Reserve heeft dinsdag in een zeldzame tussentijdse vergadering de beleidsrente verlaagd vanwege de risico's van het coronavirus.

    De rente werd verlaagd met een half procentpunt tot een bandbreedte van 1,00 tot 1,25 procent.

    Hoewel de Amerikaanse economie er fundamenteel volgens de Fed sterk uitziet, was een renteverlaging toch noodzakelijk vanwege de risico's op afnemende economische activiteiten door het coronavirus.

    De Amerikaanse centrale bank houdt later vandaag een persconferentie om een toelichting te geven op de renteverlaging.

    Het besluit om de rente te verlagen was unaniem, meldde de Fed.

    De Amerikaanse aandelenmarkten veerden direct op na het nieuws.
