    Vivoryon verkleint verlies
    Voldoende in kas tot eind mei 2023.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Vivoryon heeft het verlies in 2021 deels weten terug te dringen. Dit bleek donderdag voorbeurs uit de jaarcijfers van het biotechbedrijf.

    CEO Ulrich Dauer sprak van een uitstekend jaar voor Vivoryon, dat gekenmerkt werd door een aantal belangrijke prestaties bij de klinische ontwikkeling van zijn belangrijkste kandidaatmedicijn varoglutamstat voor de behandeling van de ziekte van Alzheimer.

    De topman benadrukte ondanks de uitdagingen in het licht van de coronaviruspandemie de doelstellingen voor de Europese Fase 2b VIVIAD-studie gerealiseerd te hebben, evenals de opstart van de Fase 2a/b-studie VIVA-MIND in de VS.

    Vivoryon boekte het afgelopen jaar een operationeel verlies van 12,8 miljoen euro, in vergelijking met 16,0 miljoen euro in het voorgaande jaar. Onder de streep resteerde een nettoverlies van 12,7 miljoen euro, tegen een verlies van 16,5 miljoen euro in 2020.

    De licentieomzet bedroeg 10,8 miljoen euro. Een jaar eerder werd door het biotechbedrijf nog geen omzet geboekt.

    Outlook

    Het concern verwacht dat de bestaande geldmiddelen en kasequivalenten voldoende zullen zijn om de onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingskosten te kunnen financieren tot en met eind mei 2023.

    Biogen-ceo vertrekt na debacle met alzheimermedicijn

    Ceo Michel Vounatsos van Biogen stapt op bij het farmabedrijf. De aankondiging volgt op de enorme controverse die het alzheimermiddel van Biogen in de Verenigde Saten heeft veroorzaakt. Vlak na de opening van de Amerikaanse beurs pluste het aandeel Biogen 1,5%.

    Biogen maakte het vertrek van Vounatsos dinsdag bekend bij de publicatie van de kwartaalcijfers. Vounatsos blijft aan als ceo en voorzitter van de raad van bestuur tot het Amerikaanse bedrijf een opvolger vindt. Hij bekleedde de functie sinds 2017.

    Ook gaat Biogen de verkoopactiviteiten van alzheimermedicijn Aduhelm terugbrengen om jaarlijks $500 mln te besparen. Reden daarvoor is het besluit van nationale zorgverzekeringsprogramma's in de VS om het middel niet langer te vergoeden. In totaal wil Biogen jaarlijks $1 mrd aan kosten besparen.

    Uit de cijfers blijkt dat de inkomsten van het farmabedrijf over het eerste kwartaal in 2022 met 26% daalden, naar $303,8 mln. Het afschrijven van een grote som aan Aduhelm-inventaris is daar debet aan. Biogen verwacht nog wel onderzoek en ontwikkeling van Aduhelm te financieren, evenals kosten voor de regulering van het controversiële middel.
    Controverse

    Aduhelm zou helpen tegen de ziekteverschijnselen en oorzaken van de ziekte van Alzheimer. Maar volgens veel waarnemers werkt het medicijn niet of nauwelijks.

    Bovendien bestaat in de VS ophef over de goedkeuring die de Amerikaanse toezichthouder FDA voor het middel verleende. De belangrijkste adviescommissie adviseerde tegen goedkeuring, maar de FDA negeerde dat. Het Europees Geneesmiddelenbureau wees Aduhelm wel resoluut af.

    Bovenop die controverse koos Biogen in eerste instantie ook nog voor een opvallend hoge prijs voor Aduhelm. Het middel ging $56.000 per patiënt per jaar kosten, een veelvoud van het bedrag waar analisten op rekenden. Later halveerde het bedrijf de prijs van Aduhelm.

    Biogen is eliminating corporate infrastructure that had been put in place to support sales of Aduhelm (aducanumab) in the U.S., the company announced.

    The decision is being made in response to a policy announced last month that Medicare would only cover the cost of Aduhelm for people with Alzheimer’s disease enrolled in select clinical trials. The decision has outraged patient advocacy groups.

    “We are disappointed by the recent Medicare coverage decision for Aduhelm,” Michel Vounatsos, Biogen’s CEO, said in a press release.

    Aduhelm is an antibody-based therapy designed to target amyloid plaques — irregular clumps of protein in the brain that are characteristic of Alzheimer’s and are thought to drive the disease. The therapy’s ability to remove amyloid plaques has been verified in clinical trials, but large Phase 3 studies testing whether it can slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s had inconsistent results.

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year approved Aduhelm to treat early Alzheimer’s through the accelerated approval pathway. In essence, the FDA cleared Aduhelm for sale in the U.S. based on the early data for amyloid clearance, while requiring the medicine’s manufacturers to conduct further tests to establish its effectiveness.

    Biogen is planning to launch a Phase 4 clinical trial called ENVISION to further test the therapy in people with early Alzheimer’s. The company is also running a study called EMBARK (NCT04241068), which is testing Aduhelm’s continual use in those who had received it in clinical trials.

    Beyond continuing to fund these research and development activities, Biogen will now be “retaining minimal resources to manage patient access programs, including a continued free drug program for patients currently on treatment in the U.S.,” the company announced.

    Biogen also recently withdrew an application seeking approval of Aduhelm in Europe after regulatory authorities indicated there is not enough data to support its approval.

    Aduhelm was jointly developed by Biogen and Eisai. The two companies are also developing another amyloid-targeting antibody called lecanemab (BAN2401).

    Lecanemab has won breakthrough therapy and fast track designations by the FDA, and data from a Phase 2b clinical trial (NCT01767311) confirmed it can clear amyloid from the brain. Biogen and Eisai plan to complete an application seeking FDA accelerated approval by mid-year.

    Lecanemab’s effect on cognitive decline in early Alzheimer’s patients is being studied in an ongoing Phase 3 study called CLARITY AD (NCT03887455). Assuming the results are positive, Biogen and Eisai expect to submit an application requesting full approval of the therapy in early 2023.

    “Lecanemab has the opportunity to become the first anti-amyloid antibody to obtain full approval for Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S.,” according to Biogen.

    Eisai recently began the process to seek approval of lecanemab in Japan.

    Pfizer koopt Biohaven

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Pfizer zal Biohaven Pharmaceuticals overnemen voor 11,6 miljard dollar in contanten. Dit maakte Pfizer dinsdagmiddag bekend.

    Pfizer betaalt voor de aandelen Biohaven die het nog niet in bezit heeft 148,50 dollar per stuk. Het aandeel Biohaven opent vermoedelijk 71 procent hoger op 142 dollar.

    Door de behandelingen van Biohaven met de eigen portefeuille te combineren, denkt Pfizer patiënten met migraine beter te kunnen behandelen.
