    Volgende week spelen we verder.
    Goed weekend.

Lijkt me een onmogelijke oefening.

SILICON PHOTONICS: Taiwan's Next Strategic Economic Shield. On April 16, Taiwan’s National Development Council chief Liu Chin-ching (pictured below) laid out a clear signal to global tech and investment communities: Taiwan is prioritising silicon photonics as its next strategic pillar—a third "economic shield" following semiconductors and AI.

The motivation? Resilience. As geopolitical uncertainty persists and energy-intensive AI workloads scale globally, Taiwan is positioning itself at the intersection of next-gen optical communications and sustainable high-performance computing.

    Why Silicon Photonics Matters
    - Lower energy consumption than traditional electrical interconnects
    - Longer transmission distances
    - Scalability through CMOS compatibility, which allows integration with existing semiconductor fabrication processes

As AI systems balloon in power needs, especially in data centres and hyperscale training infrastructure, these advantages are not just academic—they're economic imperatives.

    Taiwan’s Playbook
TSMC and ASE Group, two of Taiwan’s semiconductor giants, launched the Silicon Photonics Industry Alliance in late 2024. It now includes over 30 tech companies collaborating to localise and accelerate supply chain capabilities in this space.

TSMC has partnered with Nvidia to co-develop silicon photonics-based AI chips, though both firms admit commercial rollout is still years away. This long-horizon play is typical of deep-tech, where early groundwork is essential.

U.S.-Taiwan collaborations are deepening, with NVIDIA also announcing AI supercomputing manufacturing plans in the U.S., in partnership with TSMC, Hon Hai (Foxconn), Wistron, Amkor Technology, Inc., and SPIL. The goal: to produce up to $500 billion of AI infrastructure over four years.

    Beyond Silicon Photonics
Taiwan isn’t stopping at optical interconnects. It has identified quantum technologies and autonomous robotics as additional strategic domains. Hon Hai, for instance, is transforming itself from a contract manufacturer into a vertically integrated technology firm—investing in both quantum and robotics to hedge against future disruption.

    Navigating Trade and Tariffs
Liu also flagged U.S. trade policy uncertainty as a headwind for Taiwanese exporters. However, he pointed out that the U.S. still represents just 13.4% of global import demand, emphasising the importance of diversifying export markets to capture the remaining 86.6%.

Key Takeaway: Taiwan is making an assertive push into silicon photonics—not just as a technological pursuit, but as a national strategy for long-term competitiveness in a bifurcating tech economy. The collaborations with Nvidia and the formation of SiPhIA are early but meaningful signals.

For companies building AI infrastructure, silicon photonics is becoming a must-have, not a nice-to-have. Taiwan aims to ensure the world sources that capability from Hsinchu, rather than elsewhere.

Wat zegt Yves over bovenstaand bericht:

Will be in Taipei later this week, meeting with key players of this new SiPho ecosystem. Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China racing to catch up with US early SiPho movers. One thing for sure, optical modulators need to keep up with bandwidth per lane at 200 going to 400. Silicon needs help from inherently faster materials like organic polymers. The key challenge is to get the speed up while smoothly integrate with silicon foundry processes.
