    This is the centre of Almaty, Kazachstan, this afternoon :

    explosions and incessant ( onophoudelijk ) shooting.

    The Interior Ministry said that people who will continue armed resistance will be "destroyed." Dialogue should start to avoid new victims. Instead, Tokayev asked for external interference

    Been writing and thinking about Kazakhstan for the past 72 hours straight and still this CSTO peacekeeping thing (less than 4,000 troops ultimately) still makes absolutely no sense at all when considering the information at our disposal. On no level. Really very perplexing.

    The Kremlin told Tokayev that he wasn't allowed to flee with the other Kazachstan elite and that he was now their man and had to accept 4,000 Russian soliders on the ground. This is how they roll. Kazachstan is now a Russian vassal state more than ever, like Armenia.

    What evidence is there that Tokayev wanted or would want to leave? I don't think that is true at all.

    ok, why not? He is Nazarbayev's man and Nazarbayev has fled, or is preparing to. The Kazakh elite clearly had a game plan to flee when it went down.

    As i mentioned before. It have been written in many books how furious Putin was that Yanukovych ( president van Ukraine tot 2014 bij de volksopstand tegen hem, Maidan Revolutie ) left Kyiv, Ukraine, in the middle of Maidan ( revolution in Ukraine in 2014 ), so it makes sense that Tokayev said clearly in his first speech that we was going nowhere

    Any source on that. I always wonder what happened behind the scenes with yanukovych when he fled.

    I still pinch myself that happened. One of the most unexpected things last decade in Ukraine. I know it’s painful but him leaving was the best thing for Ukraine.

    Secretary General of CSTO Stanislav Zas' just laid out how the peacekeeping force will operate in #Kazakhstan:

    1.The duration of their presence will depend on the situation & on the decision of President Tokayev (might be "from several days to several weeks"),then CSTO leaves

    2. The geography of their deployment in #Kazakhstan will depend on "where the peacekeepers are needed most"

    3. The overall number of the contingent around 2.5K soldiers & officers with an option to be increased "if needed"

    4.Peacekeepers deployed "not to quell protests but to support #Kazakhstan in this difficult moment"

    5. Peacekeepers have right to open fire if attacked by "armed gangs"

    6. There's already the candidacy of the commander of the contingent but the decision not yet formalized

    Rusland's interventie met de CSTO landen is geen garantie dat de rust terugkeert

    Het land, Kazachstan is inmens groot en slechts 20 miljoen mensen
    Verspreid over een uitgestrekt gebied met bergen en steppen

    Wanneer het gevoel van onvrede breed gedragen is wordt het moeilijk dit te onderdrukken.
    Er zijn vele stammen/clans die hun toevlucht kunnen vinden in de bergen ( waar zij alleen de weg weten) en ook vanuit de bergen onverhoedse aanvallen kunnen uitvoeren

    #Russia 's military involvement in the developments in #Kazakhstan as a leading #CSTO force is not a guarantee that the situation there will be stabilized soon: the scope of resistance in the republic is too wide. A real chance of a civil war. Russia cannot prevent it on its own.

    People are talking about how big Kazakhstan is, but less than 20M live there, very spread out. It will be very difficult to stamp out an insurrection if it takes firm root.
