Renewable Chemistries Avantium’s Renewable Chemistries business unit focuses on developing and commercializing innovative products and processes in the renewable & sustainable chemistries space. Our track record in this area is exemplified by Avantium’s YXY Technology, our flagship process innovation program, which is now preparing for the construction of a first commercial plant. Following on from this, we have an “incubator lab” packed with innovative programs to deliver cost competitive renewable products and processes; addressing the challenges of sustainability for future generations.
DAWN Technology The use of materials from the food supply chain for the production of chemicals or fuels raises serious food security concerns with a world population that is growing to 9-10 Bn people by 2050 with in addition a higher average quality of life. In order to mitigate this, Avantium has developed technologies to produce sugars for the production of chemicals and fuels from non-food materials including forestry residues and agricultural byproducts such as corn stover or bagasse: so called second generation (2G) feedstocks. Most of the activity is in the 2G sugar field is focused on the production of lignocellulosic ethanol. In this case, pure glucose is not required and brute force high temperature pre-treatment (e.g. steam explosion) followed by enzymatic hydrolysis is often used. After testing many 2G glucose samples from a wide variety of technologies, we concluded that none of these technologies would deliver the high quality glucose needed for many bio-based chemicals processes in a cost competitive way. We found that high acid/low temperature processes were the only class of process that provided glucose with the right characteristics for bio-based chemicals applications. This class of process has been around for 100 years, and is still the only 2G sugar process that has been run at commercial scale. Avantium’s Renewable Chemistries have developed a number of proprietary innovations that transform this otherwise mature technology into the Dawn TechnologiesTM Process: a best in class process for the production of 2G glucose, separated from the hemicellulosic sugars, wood extractives and clean dry lignin. The Dawn TechnologiesTM process has the following features: No pretreatment of the biomass required Woodchips can be used directly in the process as the biomass is static in the process High purity 2G glucose product from lignocellulosic biomass (versus 1G glucose from starch). Concentrated acid, low temperature, sequential hemicellulose and cellulose hydrolysis, high yield , high selectivity Near quantitative conversion of hemicellulose at close to 100% sugar selectivity Near quantitative conversion of cellulose at close to 100% sugar selectivity Proprietary acid-sugar separation technology Separation of wood extractives such as tall oils Proprietary technology for the separation of acid from lignin, giving a clean lignin product suitable for energy generation High purity 2G glucose product; identical to starch-based glucose Feedstock flexible: forestry residues (wood), corn stover, bagasse, sugar beet residue and others
Mekong PET is a ubiquitous plastic; it’s made in part from mono ethylene glycol (MEG). There is a tremendous drive, from forward looking brand owners and packaging companies, to source MEG from renewable sources rather than from the oil industry. Today, there are commercial sources of bio-based MEG (bio-MEG), but these are made from an inefficient processes (e.g. 4 steps and low atom efficiency) making them too expensive and hampering the widespread use of bio-MEG when compared to the cheaper oil and shale gas based alternatives. Avantium’s Renewable Chemistries have developed the Mekong Process; a fantastic 1-step, high atom efficiency process which is competitive with the oil based MEG. There is no need for a “green premium” and no barrier for Mekong bio-MEG’s widespread introduction. We believe that Mekong can deliver a Bio-MEG product to the market competitive with petro-MEG, now and in the future. Current projections are for the Bio-MEG market to reach 3 million tonnes per annum by 2020, and the wider petro-MEG market being some 10x this figure. The potential is enormous! Both the DAWN Technology and Mekong projects are entering into the scale-up phase. For DAWN Technology we have started the design of a multi tonne continuously operated pilot plant that will start delivering 2G glucose, mixed hemicellulose sugars. Tall oil extractives and lignin in 2017. We are interested to discuss partnering options on feedstock, products and process licensing. For Mekong we are gearing up for the Pilot Phase and we are open to discuss various partnering opportunities.
BIO-HArT Over the past years Biorizon has developed three commercially promising technologies for the conversion of wood, sugars and lignin into aromatics. The cross-border project BIO-HArT, acronym in Dutch for “Biorizon Innovation and Upscaling of Renewable Aromatics Technology”, was set out in 2016 to scale up technology for the production of bio-aromatics from biomass. By the end of 2018 this must result in functioning bench-scale demonstrators and optimized processes with which samples can be provided to the industry on a kilogram scale. A consortium of 10 partners (among others Avantium) from industry and research organizations is working on the realization of these ambitious targets. More information on Biorizon: www.biorizon.eu. By demonstrating the technology within this project on a larger scale, the confidence in the applicability of the technology on an industrial scale increases and the risk to invest diminishes. Simultaneously bio-aromatics will be produced in sufficient quantities to be able to start application development routes. By mid 2017 several key milestones have been achieved illustrating already some of the successes of BIO-HArT: Protocols are established for bio-refining of several raw materials like Miscanthus, corn straw, flaxstraw, into sugars and lignin. Protocols (reaction conditions, processes, etc.) have been established and optimized for the conversion of wood, lignin and sugar fractions into target aromatic compounds. Pilot installations have been established along the complete chain for the bio-refinery of biomass, conversion and fractionation of obtained lignin and sugar fractions to aromatic compounds, in specific the following installations: – 4 pilot installations for the bio-refining of lignocellulosic materials into sugars and lignin. – A 2L reactor for the direct catalytic conversion of wood to a mixture of alkylfenols (the so-called “Lignin-first” technology). This reactor will be used to further optimize the reaction on kg scale and for the delivery of samples for evaluation in application. – Two continuous process installations that perform several of the key reactions in the Diels-Alder approach from sugar based starting materials (Furans) towards aromatic compounds. BIO-HArT is now able to meet requests from companies for samples on multi-kg scale. – A mini-pilot for a mobile nano-filtration unit for the 1) fractionation / purification of the alkylfenol mixture from the Lignin-first process and 2) the fractionation from the Crude Lignin Oil obtained from a catalytic depolymerization process. Samples of several aromatic compounds / fractions have been provided on 100g – 1kg scale for evaluation of their quality in a range of applications like coatings, resins, adhesives, lubricants, polyesters, and polyurethane applications.
What is EGgPLANT? EGgPLANT is short for: Sustainable and carbon-efficient mono-Ethylene Glycol generation in demonstration PLANT. Mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) MEG is a key monomer in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene furanoate (PEF) plastics. Problem: 99% of MEG produced globally is derived from a petrochemical source. Currently, commercially available bio-based MEG is made by an inefficient, expensive process prohibiting its widespread use. Solution: Avantium has developed the one-step ‘Mekong’ process for producing a drop-in bio-MEG from renewable resources. The Mekong process produced bio-MEG from renewable resources that can compete with existing petrochemical MEG in both cost and quality. More about Mekong Development Target: To build a demonstration plant (11 ton/year) which allows for the technoeconomic validation of the process in addition to producing sample material in support of scale-up to industrial volumes.
BASF notifies Avantium of its exit from Synvina 18 Dec 2018 | 2018, Press releases Amsterdam, 18 December 2018, 07:00 – BASF has notified Avantium of its exit from their Synvina joint venture, effective 15 January 2019. Avantium continues to disagree with BASF’s interpretation of the joint venture agreement. Avantium and BASF are still discussing the terms and conditions of an exit. Upon an exit of BASF, Avantium will acquire BASF’s equity interest in the joint venture and Synvina will continue its operations as a fully Avantium-owned company. In addition, the YXY technology, know-how and people will revert to Avantium. This will allow Avantium to pursue alternative routes for commercializing the technology.

Succes verder!
