Specifieker: “I've also heard that they may sell the consumer business to a chinese company. That would be a surprise to me b/c I always think of that as their first interest. But it is a huge drag on the company. It was from someone in the industry but I am not sure how much he knew. Probably just speculation.
Noord-Hollands Nieuws...HD mapping ‘takes ADAS to the next level’, says TomTom ?April 25, 2018 Enabling an autonomous vehicle to know precisely where it is in real time via HD mapping will not only assist with navigation, but also consumer adoption of autonomous driving. By Freddie Holmes Experiencing a partially automated highway driving system today can be both rewarding and stressful at times. While in most scenarios these systems are highly capable at controlling acceleration, braking and steering within lanes, any sudden or unexpected changes to the driving environment can occasionally spook the system. One of the factors behind this issue is that the car currently relies on visual information, with very little context about what it might encounter further on up the road; is the bend too tight, are the road markings obscured, is there ice on the road? TomTom believes that its high-definition (HD) map technology can make all the difference and avoid situations where the car deems it necessary to disengage a partially or fully automated feature, and hand control back to the driver without warning. While these systems emphasise that driver monitoring is required at all times, such instances can erode consumer confidence in automated capabilities. TomTom recognises that HD maps are not a silver bullet to the issue, however, and as such have been designed to work in tandem with various other technologies as part of a complete autonomous system. “We don’t see HD maps as standalone products. They don’t exist in a vacuum and must be used as part of the automated system in a vehicle,” explains Tomaso Grossi, Senior Product Marketer at TomTom Automotive. “We believe in a closed loop system, whereby we produce the most accurate, robust and reliable maps in the Cloud, deliver these systems to the car, and then leverage multiple sources – such as different types of vehicle sensors – to ensure this map is up-to-date, safe and matches reality.”Constantly evolving One of the issues with in-car navigation systems today is the lead-time between a change to the road network – be it traffic, road works or a crash – and an update being validated and issued. For the driver, this means that the in-vehicle map frequently becomes out of date, and TomTom believes this needs to change. “The map is a living and ever-changing, ever-updating system,” says Grossi. “We’re exploring and experimenting with multiple sources to keep the map up to date, and using data in the Cloud to feed it back into vehicles, ideally in real time.” Initial targets are to be able to completely refresh and validate the map with lead times of just under a week, but real-time updates are the primary goal in some instances. For example, it is not strictly necessary for real-time updates to the entire map in one go; certain sections of road networks change far less frequently than others. Controlled access highways, for instance, are the least variable types of roads, with the addition of new lanes and lane markings occurring quite rarely. Conversely, city roads tend to see the highest variation of changes. While the ideal goal is for real-time updates across the board, TomTom has found that – based on its expertise in navigation maps – a cycle time of a few days or even a week is sufficient for most roads. “There will be different lead times depending on the class of road and where these roads are located,” explains Grossi. “Depending on how often these roads change, we’ll need to have the map updated as quickly as possible. We already are taking this challenge head on with the typical maps we use in navigation systems today.” TomTom has been collecting data through its RoadDNA technology, one of the core elements to HD mapping, which will allow autonomous vehicles to become aware of their environment, location and path on the road. Certain roadways in mainland Japan, the US and Western Europe have already been mapped out using this technology, and it is being leveraged by several OEMs’ autonomous prototype vehicles. As it stands, just over 380,000 kilometres of roadways across these regions have HD map coverage, up from 250,000 kilometres globally as of March 2017. TomTom is not the only player developing advanced mapping technology, and a handful of start-ups are investigating how such systems can support autonomous vehicle systems. Localised HD map coverage may benefit those testing vehicles in specific areas, but in order to facilitate widespread deployment of autonomous vehicles, these maps need to go national, if not global in future. “The ability to scale up and produce these maps in a highly efficient way whilst maintaining accuracy, robustness and reliability is key,” says Grossi. “If you look at the current ecosystem of autonomous driving, maps are becoming increasingly important. New players are entering this area, but many of these start-ups have an approach that is maybe not as scalable. When it comes to OEM demands, they might fall short in terms of scalability and robustness.”Building trust There are three primary use cases for HD maps: accurate localisation, supporting the environmental perception of vehicle sensors, and the ability to plan the path of the vehicle as accurately and efficiently as possible. In short: to ensure the car knows where it is, where it is going, and any issues that may affect its course on the road. “It’s about making the system safer, more comfortable, and building trust into the system,” says Grossi. “Most people that have tried semi-autonomous systems on the market today, or who have had a ride in an autonomous vehicle, are very enthusiastic about the technology. But at the same time, they are also aware of the limitations.” Regulations and technical developments aside, trust in autonomous driving systems is expected to be one of the main factors that influences consumer adoption of the technology. HD maps are believed to be a vital element to the overall system in ensuring that the car can not only anticipate potential dangers, but also leverage real-time understanding of road conditions out of sight. While autonomous vehicles of Level 4 and 5 capability on the scale developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) are some way off, there will be many drivers today that desire an improved semi-autonomous experience. Grossi advises that TomTom’s HD maps and RoadDNA software can also assist the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that underpin highway pilots today. “Our technology extends the car’s view beyond the range of it sensors, and allows it to anticipate what might happen. The car may be travelling at a particular speed toward a certain curvature in the road, and it would be more comfortable and safer if the car slowed down in advance, rather than reacting at the last minute,” he concludes. “HD map information helps to take ADAS to the next level. If you can build a system that leverages HD maps to make the car safer, more comfortable and more aware, then trust and driver adoption in these systems will increase.”www.automotiveworld.com/analysis/hd-m...

We shall see
""Jaarverslag 2017 blz 69 CHANGE OF CONTROL In case of a change of control the RVC may determine that any options, granted to the RVB leden, shall be ( deemedto be ) exercissable immediately prior to and conditional upon such change of control, or during such period after the change of controls the RVC may specify. Failing exercise in such cahange of control event, the options will lapse. STUKJE UIT HET BOVENSTAANDE STUKJE. "" or during such period after the change of controls the RVC may specify.
bron Bloomberg 24-4 China’s Car Revolution Is Going Global China's rising automakers want to sell the future of driving all over the world. ILLUSTRATION: WOSHIBAI FOR BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK Bloomberg News 23 april 2018 23:00 CEST From On a bright spring day in Amsterdam, car buffs stepped inside a blacked-out warehouse to nibble on lamb skewers and sip rhubarb cocktails courtesy of Lynk & Co., which was showing off its new hybrid SUV. What seemed like just another launch of a new vehicle was actually something more: the coming-out party for China’s globally ambitious auto industry. For the first time, a Chinese-branded car will be made in Western Europe for sale there, with the ultimate goal of landing in U.S. showrooms. That’s the master plan of billionaire Li Shufu, who has catapulted from founding Geely Group as a refrigerator maker in the 1980s to owning Volvo Cars, British sports carmaker Lotus, London Black Cabs and the largest stake in Daimler AG—the inventor of the automobile. Li is spearheading China’s aspirations to wedge itself among the big three of the global car industry—the U.S., Germany and Japan—so they become the Big Four. Geely Chairman Li Shufu plans to launch a global automaker from China. “To do that,” he says, “we must get out of the country.”PHOTOGRAPHER: QILAI SHEN/BLOOMBERG “I want the whole world to hear the cacophony generated by Geely and other made-in-China cars,” Li told Bloomberg News. “Geely’s dream is to become a globalized company. To do that, we must get out of the country.” He’s not alone: At least four Chinese carmakers and three Chinese-owned startups—SF Motors Inc., NIO and Byton—plan to sell cars in the U.S. starting next year. At the same time, Warren Buffett-backed BYD Co. is building electric buses in California; Baidu Inc. is partnering with Microsoft Corp., TomTom NV and Nvidia Corp. on a self-driving platform; and Beijing-based TuSimple Inc. is testing autonomous-driving big rigs in Arizona. The industry is set for more upheaval as China unravels a two-decade policy that capped foreign ownership of carmaking ventures at 50 percent. The change may energize companies such as Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Co. to seek a bigger piece of the world’s largest car market and allow Tesla Inc. to set up a fully owned unit. Carmakers may get better visibility of their futures, and those Chinese companies that fear losing sales at home may sense a greater impetus to go abroad. “They are in a better position now than they ever have been,” Anna-Marie Baisden, head of autos research in London with BMI Research, said of Chinese carmakers. “They’ve had so much time working with international manufacturers and have become a lot more mature.” We’ve seen this movie before from China—in the smartphone industry. The nation used the shift in technology from basic flip phones to hand-sized computers to dominate the manufacturing industry, trouncing then-dominant makers from Finland, Sweden, the U.S., Japan and Germany. Last year, three of the top five smartphone handset makers in the world were Chinese, according to Gartner Inc. Yet the sequel may take longer to become a hit, given the brand loyalty that has existed since Henry Ford debuted the Model T in 1908. How will Chinese automakers convince Midwesterners to give up their Ford F-150 pickups or Tokyo residents to switch from their Toyotas? “Chinese carmakers intend to come over, but what need will they fill?” said Doug Betts, senior vice president of global automotive practice at J.D. Power. “What is the reason to buy their cars?”
Thank you for taking my questions and congratulations on your strong results. My question is about the progress of your autonomous cars. We (00:36:21) understand that Baidu just celebrated one year anniversary for the Apollo project. We (00:36:27) understand that development is still in the early stage, but in retrospect, what do you view as the key achievements in the past one year? And what would you do to do better? Looking into the future, what would be your key focus to stay ahead of the curve, given the intensified competition domestically? Thank you.Qi Lu - Baidu, Inc. Yes. So first of all, with regard to the key progress over the last one year for the Apollo platform, there's several important area to quote. (00:36:56) One is the platform capabilities. We deployed Apollo 1.0 within short span. Now, we just deployed Apollo 2.5. The platform capability and technology is moving at a rapid pace. Second is, the ecosystem helps. (00:37:14) Our developer community, then the partners, the different agencies, government departments that are embracing, supporting Apollo has been growing leaps and bounds. Third, which is more important, is the productization and the commercialization of our partners for L3 and L4-based vehicles is moving at a much, much faster pace than we originally anticipated, much, much faster. Now going forward, our key focus areas will be continue to build up our technology foundations, but more importantly, to speed up the productization and the commercialization of vehicles. For example, we mentioned in this year, we have a partner to commercially deploy L4 minibus vehicles. In next calendar years, we have several OEM partners deploy L3 commercially available vehicles. And as long as we keep excellent pace of all those, the Apollo platform will continue to gain strength against the competition. As we mentioned in the earlier calls, the Apollo ecosystem also have a very clear and healthy (00:38:25) business model. We are very similar to Android, the platform technology is open for participating, open for use, but we also sell our services, just like Google, if you use Android to build a handset, you use Google Search services. In this case, it would be our HD map services and the future services that we'll deploy. So overall, our focus is continue to speed up the development ecosystem, particularly the productization and the commercialization of our partners' vehicles. That will further increase Baidu's competitive strengths.Piyush Mubayi - Goldman Sachs (Asia) LLC And (00:45:56) thank you for taking my question. Dr. Qi, a question on autonomous vehicle for you. We understand that the commercial application for AV may still be in an early stage, but you mentioned commercial vehicles twice. And I wondered if you could just compare and contrast the passenger segment and the commercial segment and take us through which ones could come to market faster and if you could potentially talk through the monetization opportunities relative to the two businesses.Qi Lu - Baidu, Inc. Okay. So let me comment on the three aspects of what you just mentioned. So first of all, just as a matter of clarification and to put the facts in our statement. When we talk about commercially available vehicles, that's on the passenger side, meaning these are the L4 vehicles. These are six-seaters minibuses that will be commercially available later part of this calendar year and as (00:47:02) several OEM partners will be available in 2019 and some in 2020. These are sedans. These are L3 vehicles meaning that the passengers still need to sit in the car in front of the wheel, but the vehicle is able to perform increasing more and more autonomous driving capabilities. Those are commercially available vehicles for passengers, not for commercial, let's say, trucks or logistic vehicle. That's the – make sure that we are clear (00:47:29) state the facts. That's number one. Number two, on the commercial opportunities, the key thing I want to emphasize is that we need to think about the commercial deployment at the lowest speed, the more controlled environment, and that's the key. There are a lot more commercially viable opportunities, individual consumers or business customers are willing to pay for, but autonomous vehicle driving behaviors is at the lowest speed and more controlled environment. The six-seater bus is a prime example of that because commercially, there's already stream of incoming bookings for that vehicle, you can imagine deploying those minibuses in a industrial park, in a tourist regions, they are operating in the lowest speed in a very much controlled environment. Therefore, safety can be guaranteed, can be fully protected, and similar for our L3 vehicles for next year. And having said all of that, let me also talk about the relative areas of commercially viable opportunity for passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. Indeed, in our inbound (00:48:39) partnership requirements that we're working with more and more partners on commercial vehicle, for example, logistic vehicles, trucks and autos because there's even more opportunity to deploy those at the lowest speed and a more controlled environment. So that's the landscape that's evolving at the very fast pace, and Apollo is tend to gain substantial more opportunities. Lastly is about the business model. For Apollo, we are very clear upfront in our business models. We make the platform available open – free for our partner to use, but they would need to use a key set of services, and one of those is HD maps, which stands for high-definition maps. These are maps not meant for human eye balls to see. These are maps for the sensor of the devices that's in the car to see. And this is the key part of our economic model and we're seeing very healthy adoptions of our HD maps by our customers, current customers and the future customers.
Garmin stopt met Navigon apps - DEAR CUSTOMERS NAVIGON has made for movement in navigation for over 25 years and has given so many people greater orientation and less stress in everyday life and on the road. For strategic reasons, however, Garmin has decided to take all navigation apps – with a few exceptions – off the market as of May 14th, 2018. For existing NAVIGON users, this means little change, since you can continue using your app or device as usual. You will find more information in the following and in our Support Center. Our thanks to all our users for their many years of loyalty and support. And also to all Cruiser bikers for an exciting last year! We wish you the very best of enjoyable travel in the future! Your NAVIGON Team WHAT EXACTLY DOES THAT MEAN? WHICH APPS ARE AFFECTED? All Garmin turn-by-turn apps are affected, including NAVIGON, NAVIGON Regions and NAVIGON Cruiser. The only exceptions: NAVIGON select: Telekom customers can continue to download the app for free and to upgrade it with In-App purchases. Garmin HUD EU/NA: Garmin HUD Plus or BMW HUS customers can continue to download the Garmin HUD Apps for free and to upgrade it. - Zie volledig bericht:www.navigon.com/en/
