    Weet je wat? Dat offensief naar Cherson is zo ontzettend getelefoneerd dat het me niks zou verbazen als het allemaal één grote afleiding is. Ze schieten met hun HIMARS al die depots in de fik en ze schieten die bruggen aan gort. Verder worden er een paar gehuchtjes bevrijd. Heel veel meer is er daar eigenlijk niet eens gebeurd. Het belangrijkste is dat de Russen niet meer voor de poorten van Mikolaev staan. En de Russen sturen er steeds meer versterkingen naar toe. Het zou me helemaal niks verbazen als het echte offensief ineens heel ergens anders gaat komen. Misschien wel in de Donbass. Dat zou pas een stunt zijn.

    Putin Has a Problem: Russian Soldiers Are Being Sent to Jail For Refusing to Fight in Ukraine

    Putin May Have a New Problem in Ukraine: A lawyer revealed this week how a group of Russian soldiers accused their commanders of throwing them in prison in Ukraine’s Donbas region for refusing to fight in the war.

    According to Maxim Grebenyuk, a Russian lawyer who runs the Moscow-based advocacy organization Military Ombudsman, at least four Russian troops filed written complaints about their treatment in Ukraine. The soldiers demanded that their superiors be punished for detaining them over their refusal to fight.

    Grebenyuk said that he was in possession of accounts of at least 70 Russian soldiers who have been held as prisoners. He also described how an additional 70 are believed to have been detained for refusing to fight.

    In one letter sent to Russian prosecutors on Monday, a soldier revealed how he was detained for over a week and moved between facilities across Russian-occupied Luhansk. The soldier said that he refused to fight in the war over what he believed were “tactical and strategic mistakes” made by his commanders, as well as their “total disregard for human life.” The soldier appeared to make reference to the Russian military’s propensity to target civilian facilities and residential areas.

    Last week, Grebenyuk also revealed how hundreds of soldiers have requested help chasing payments promised to them by the Kremlin. Grebenyuk described how wounded Russian soldiers were not receiving payments worth three million roubles, roughly 50,000 USD, which were guaranteed to them by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    The claims paint a sorry picture of Russian soldiers’ morale as the war in Ukraine, which the Kremlin expected would last only a matter of weeks, approaches its sixth month. Statements written by imprisoned soldiers also reveal that many Russian troops not only oppose the Russian military’s tactics – which the Kremlin has repeatedly denied constitute war crimes – but also believe the war effort is futile.

    Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency, Agencja Wywiadu, released intercepted phone calls in June that reveal how Russian soldiers feel about the Ukraine invasion. The intercepted calls, purportedly between Russian soldiers, reveal how soldier morale is running low as the Kremlin grows increasingly desperate.

    Polish security officials said during a press briefing in late June that the recordings reveal how the “reality in the ranks of the Russian Army is a far cry from propagandist messages.”

    The Polish officials said that “frustration is mounting” among the Russian soldiers and that they fear being forced to take part in further battles.

    ATO countries are working with defense companies to boost weapons supplies for Ukraine

    NATO members are working closely with the defense companies to ensure Ukraine getting more weapons and equipment supplies.

    Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, stated this in his interview with Reuters.

    More weapons are needed for Ukraine’s long-haul preparations in its war with Russia.

    “We are providing a lot of support, but we need to do even more and be prepared for the long haul,” Stoltenberg said.
    “Therefore, we’re also now in close contact and working closely with the defense industry to produce more and to deliver more of different types of ammunition, weapons, and capabilities,” he said.

    This regards, in particular, the M142 HIMARS high mobility artillery rocket systems.

    While NATO members are not directly involved in the war, NATO is closely engaged in coordinating the Western response to the invasion.

    Stoltenberg reiterated his position that the war would likely end only after the negotiation process.

    We know most wars end at the negotiating table. We also know that the outcome of those negotiations will be totally dependent on the strength on the battlefield,” he said.

    “It’s not for me to tell Ukraine what those terms exactly should be. It’s for me and NATO to support them to strengthen their hands, so we maximize the likelihood of an acceptable solution,” the Secretary-General emphasized.

    reviously, Stoltenberg said the West will not stop supporting Ukraine, even if the war with Russia will last for years. He noted that with modern armament, Ukraine could knock the invaders out of the country.

    Three ships carrying nearly 60,000 tons of corn sailed from the Ukrainian port

    The first convoy of ships carrying Ukrainian grain sailed from the port of Odessa, in a sign that last month’s agreement with Russia on facilitating Ukrainian food exports is holding even as fighting rages across the country.

    A convoy consisting of the bulk carriers Navi Star, Rojen and Polarnet left Odessa, Ukraine, on Friday morning carrying nearly 60,000 tons of corn, passing the city whose horizon has been largely clear of vessels since the war began on Feb. 24.

    The departure follows a test run by Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni, which left Odessa on Monday and, after a joint Russian-Ukrainian-Turkish inspection off Istanbul, has been allowed to proceed to Lebanon. The inspectors have also cleared the first vessel to head to Ukraine in five months, the Barbados-flagged Fulmar S, the Turkish Defense Ministry said. Ukrainian officials said they expect it to reach Odessa on Saturday.

    The shipments, which will help alleviate a global food crisis and provide Ukraine with badly needed foreign currency, were made possible by a deal brokered last month by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Mr. Erdogan, whose country is the only North Atlantic Treaty Organization member that has refused to impose sanctions on Moscow, was due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi on the Russian Black Sea coast on Friday, their second encounter in less than a month.

    Odessa’s three ports can process more than 100 cargo vessels and export over 3 million metric tons of grain a month, said Oleksandr Kubrakov, Ukraine’s infrastructure minister.

    Rusland wil Israëlische organisatie verbieden; spanning tussen beide landen groeit

    Tussen Rusland en Israël dreigt een conflict nu Moskou een Israëlische organisatie wil verbieden die Russische Joden helpt om zich in Israël te vestigen. De Israëlische regering dreigt met tegenmaatregelen.

    Het Russische ministerie van Justitie stapte donderdag naar een rechtbank in Moskou met het verzoek de Russische afdeling van Sochnoet te ontbinden. Sochnoet helpt Joden overal ter wereld die gebruik willen maken van hun in Israël per wet vastgelegde recht ‘terug te keren’.

    De kwestie heeft tot verontwaardigde reacties geleid in Israël. De Israëlische premier Yair Lapid waarschuwde Moskou dat het sluiten van Sochnoet ‘ernstige gevolgen zal hebben voor de onderlinge betrekkingen’. Om te voorkomen dat de ruzie uit de hand loopt, stuurde Lapid woensdag een delegatie naar Moskou, maar het Kremlin liet weten dat president Poetin niet van plan is hen te ontvangen.
    Poging tot sussen

    Kremlin-woordvoerder Dmitri Peskov probeerde de zaak eerder te sussen door te zeggen dat alle organisaties zich nu eenmaal aan de Russische wetten moeten houden. ‘Er is geen reden om de situatie te politiseren en op de complete betrekkingen tussen Rusland en Israël te projecteren’, zei hij.

    Maar uit het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken klonk heel andere taal. ‘Helaas horen we de laatste maanden totaal onproductieve en, nog belangrijker, partijdige retoriek uit Tel Aviv’, zei woordvoerder Maria Zacharova. Zij noemde de steun van Israël voor Oekraïne ‘volstrekt onbegrijpelijk en vreemd’.

    Medewerkers van Sochnoet zeggen dat hun telefoongesprekken worden afgeluisterd en soms zelfs worden onderbroken met de waarschuwing dat zij de wet overtreden.
    Joodse brain drain

    De organisatie wordt ervan beschuldigd dat ze illegaal gegevens van Russische burgers verzamelt en die doorspeelt aan Israël. Moskou zou zich ook ernstig zorgen maken over een brain drain. De afgelopen tijd is het aantal Joden dat uit Rusland vertrekt aanzienlijk toegenomen, vooral sinds het begin van de oorlog tegen Oekraïne. Dagelijks melden zich volgens Sochnoet bijna duizend mensen aan voor emigratie naar Israël.

    Rusland lijkt echter vooral geïrriteerd over de steeds luidere kritiek van Israël op de oorlog tegen Oekraïne. Onder de vorige maand afgetreden premier Naftali Bennett stelde Israël zich heel voorzichtig op uit vrees de verhoudingen met Rusland in gevaar te brengen. Israël heeft Rusland nodig om zijn vijanden in Syrië, zoals de troepen van Iran en de pro-Iraanse Hezbollah-beweging, in bedwang te houden.

    Bennett wierp zich aanvankelijk op als bemiddelaar, maar dat liep op niets uit. Nog steeds weigert Israël wapens te leveren aan Oekraïne, maar sinds Lapid premier is, klinkt er luide kritiek op het optreden van Rusland in Oekraïne.
    Relatie beschadigd

    De relatie tussen de twee landen heeft flinke schade opgelopen als gevolg van de uitlatingen van minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Sergej Lavrov over het ‘nazistische’ karakter van het bewind in Oekraïne. Toen een journalist hem eraan herinnerde dat president Zelensky zelf van Joodse afkomst is, beweerde Lavrov dat ‘Hitler ook Joods bloed had’ en dat Joden vaak ‘de ergste antisemieten zijn’.

    Dat kwam hem te staan op een woedende reactie van Lapid. ‘De Joden hebben zichzelf niet uitgeroeid tijdens de Holocaust...De Joden van antisemitisme beschuldigen, is een schandalig niveau van racisme tegen de Joden’, bekritiseerde hij Lavrov.

    Volgens de Israëlische regering excuseerde president Poetin zich achteraf voor de uitlatingen van Lavrov, maar onder de Joodse gemeenschap in Rusland klinkt de klacht dat Lavrovs opmerkingen het steeds killere klimaat in Rusland weerspiegelen. Verscheidene prominente Joden, onder wie de opperrabbijn van Moskou, zijn de afgelopen maanden uitgeweken naar het buitenland nadat zij onder druk waren gezet zich achter de Russische inval in Oekraïne te scharen.
    Symbolische betekenis

    De Israëlische regering vreest dat ook de aanval op Sochnoet deel uitmaakt van dat nieuwe klimaat. In de praktijk zal het verbieden van de organisatie volgens sommige waarnemers weinig effect hebben, maar symbolisch heeft het wel een grote betekenis. ‘Dit is niet zoiets als de McDonald’s sluiten. Dit zullen we niet zomaar accepteren’, citeerde het persbureau Reuters een Israëlische functionaris.

    An army of soldiers from one of the world’s most authoritarian nations could be sent to bolster Vladimir Putin’s forces fighting in Ukraine.

    Up to 100,000 North Korean soldiers could be sent to bolster Vladimir Putin’s forces fighting Ukraine, according to Russian reports.

    A leading defence expert in Moscow, reserve colonel Igor Korotchenko, told state TV: “We shouldn’t be shy in accepting the hand extended to us by Kim Jong-un.”

    North Korea has made it clear through “diplomatic channels” that as well as providing builders to repair war damage, it is ready to supply a vast fighting force, reported Regnum news agency.

    They would be deployed to the forces of the separatist pro-Putin Donetsk People’s Republic [DPR] and Luhansk People’s Republic [LPR], both of which Kim has recently recognised as independent countries.

    “The country is ready to transfer up to 100,000 of its soldiers to Donbas,” said the report by the pro-Kremlin news agency.

    “Pyongyang will be able to transfer its tactical units to Donbas.”

    In return, grain and energy would be supplied to Kim’s stricken economy.

    The claim was seized on by Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of Russia’s National Defence journal on Rossiya 1 channel, who said: “There are reports that 100,000 North Korean volunteers are prepared to come and take part in the conflict.”

    He was challenged on whether they could be volunteers from North Korea where total obedience is required.

    But he said North Korean people were “resilient and undemanding” and “the most important thing is they are motivated”.

    Up to 225 Canadian soldiers heading to U.K. to train Ukrainian soldiers

    The Canadian government says it’s sending as many as 225 soldiers to help train Ukrainian army recruits for war with Russia, an escalation of Ottawa’s commitment even as a dispute with Kyiv over repairing Russian turbines was on full display on Parliament Hill Thursday.

    Defence Minister Anita Anand announced the training mission – which will take place in the United Kingdom – just hours before a Parliamentary committee met to hear testimony about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s July decision to circumvent sanctions and allow the import, repair and re-export of Russian turbines while Moscow is still at war with Ukraine.

    Ms. Anand said the deployment is a continuation of the Canadian Forces’ Operation UNIFIER mission that has provided soldiering instructions to Ukrainian soldiers since 2015. The mission was suspended after Russia’s Feb. 24 military assault on Ukraine, but the Canadian government provided extra funding for continuing it in its 2022 budget.

    In this UNIFIER mission, Canada is training Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers heading into a conflict where deaths are high on both sides. Central Intelligence Agency director William Burns said last month the U.S. estimates about 15,000 Russians have been killed and perhaps 45,000 wounded.

    Het Oekrainse leger en de US inlichtingendiensten maken ook al melding dat het aantal beschietingen per dag door de Russen lager ligt dan voorheen
    Kan komen door beperktere hoeveelheid munitie, hetzij door de aanslagen op de munitie depots, hetzij dat van de totale Russische munitie voorraad het einde in zicht komt
