Siemens Gamesa Commissions Hydrogen Service Operation Vessel

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    22 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

Siemens Gamesa is deeply committed to sustainability and has set the ambitious target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2040. This includes emissions produced by the company’s entire value chain. The company is taking another step towards a sustainable future. The latest member of Siemens Gamesa's fleet of ships is equipped with environmentally friendly propulsion technology. The vessel is ready for the addition of a 12-MW battery which would reduce energy consumption during operation. The REM Energy is also capable to run emissions free on green hydrogen or with batteries and offshore charging. This puts the SOV ahead of its time. Until a green hydrogen economy is established in Germany, the ship will be conventionally powered by efficient diesel generators.

The REM Energy is almost 90m long and almost 20m wide. It will be the workplace and living quarters for up to 75 offshore service technicians and 24 crew members.

Worldwide marine traffic accounts for more than 900 million tons of CO2 emissions which is more than the entire nation of Germany emits. Shipping is a sector that is difficult to electrify. Green hydrogen and other power-to-X fuels produced with renewable energy are a key building block for reducing emissions. With the Brande Hydrogen pilot project and the development of an offshore-wind-to-hydrogen-turbine with integrated electrolyzer, Siemens Gamesa is leading the way to unlock a green hydrogen revolution.

Hollandse Kust Zuid Offshore Wind to Use Recyclable Blades

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

The Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm in the Netherlands will use a new type of wind turbine blades that can be recycled. The blades are made with a new type of resin which makes it easier to reclaim the different blade components. Last year, Vattenfall set the target to recycle all wind turbine blades by 2030. Several initiatives have started in order to reach the target. Now Vattenfall has decided to introduce a new type of blade from Siemens Gamesa, called Recycableblades in Hollandse Kust Zuid.

While most parts of a wind turbine can be recycled after their working life, blades have up until now been a challenge. The problem lies in the resin, which is used in combination with glass and carbon fiber for the structure of the blades. It typically takes high temperatures, high pressure, special processes, or a combination of these to dissolve the resin. This drives up the energy use and thereby cost; it also reduces the material properties in the blade as they deteriorate due to the exposure to these extreme dissolving conditions.

Siemens Gamesa’s RecyclableBlades use a resin type that dissolves in a low-temperature, mildly acidic solution. This separates the resin from the other components in the blade: fiberglass, carbon fiber, plastic, wood, and metal without significantly impacting their properties. This allows the components to be recycled into new products afterwards.

Siemens Gamesa’s Recycableblades were launched in 2021 but the availability is still limited. Hollandse Kust Zuid will be the first Vattenfall project to employ the blades in some of the 140 turbines in the wind farm.

In addition, Vattenfall has secured availability of the blades for the next project, Hollandse Kust West. If Vattenfall is awarded the site, a number of turbines will be able to use the Siemens Gamesa RecyclableBlades.

Following its expected commissioning in 2024, the 75 MW Gunwi wind farm will generate enough electricity to power 64,000 local households, forming part of the country’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and boost the target of renewable energy generation to 20% in the electricity mix by 2030.

Located in Gunwi-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do province, the Gunwi wind farm will feature SG 5.0-145, one of the most powerful turbines available in the local market, to best utilize the wind resources from a mountainous area. To optimize the wind farm performance, Siemens Gamesa also signed a long-term service agreement of 20 years to provide operation and maintenance services.

Operating as a subsidiary of South Korea’s leading conglomerate SK Group, SK D&D has been increasing its investment in the renewables market to fulfil its ESG commitments, including forging a partnership with Siemens Gamesa since 2014 to already develop two wind power projects totaling 84 MW.
