Together, Siemens Wind Power and Gamesa are creating a leader in the renewable energy industry, to provide cleaner, more reliable and more affordable energy to society, and to create lasting value for all stakeholders.

We are already a leader in the renewable energy marketplace, but we have much work ahead of us. Our priorities are clear: delivering on our projects, winning new business and creating a company culture focused on engineering excellence and vigorous cost management. This will enable us to provide benefits to our customers and our many stakeholders.

    Markus Tacke, CEO

Zoals Everfuel, Nel, PowerCell Sweden, Hexagon Purus (alle 4 Scandinavie) of in Plugpower, FuelCell Energy, Ballard Power Systems (alle 3 USA).

Siemens Gamesa Turbines for Sofia Offshore Wind Power Project

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been awarded the firm order from RWE for the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind power project. Sofia represents a giant leap for the company; located 195 km off the UK’s north eastern coast on Dogger Bank in the North Sea, the project will be the first to install the company’s flagship 14 MW Direct Drive offshore wind turbine. At 593 square kilometres, the Sofia project will also cover an area greater than that of the Isle of Man and will utilise the evolutionary technology of the SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine commercially for the first time anywhere in the world. The development brings other milestones; the 100 turbines will be installed furthest from shore of any project yet undertaken by the company and will feature the world’s largest single-cast turbine blade at 108 m long.

The B108 blades being used at Sofia are more than six times longer than the first offshore wind turbine blades ever installed, namely the 16-meter long blades used at Vindeby in Denmark in 1991. The 35-meter water depth, the distance from the UK’s coastline and the sheer scale of the turbine and its components make the stable, proven technology of Siemens Gamesa’s Direct Drive technology, where no gearbox is involved,an obvious choice for the Sofia wind power project. The strong, reliable winds far from shore will enable the completed wind power project to power the equivalent of 1.2 million UK households. Offshore construction works for the Sofia project will start in 2023 with turbine installation set to commence in 2025.

Two further preferred supplier agreements for wind power projects employing the SG 14-222 DD turbine are signed, totalling 2.94 GW: the 300 MW Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan and the 2.64 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project in the USA. The enormous machines, with a capacity of up to 15 megawatts with Power Boost, a 222 m rotor diameter and overall height of 252 m, are able to bring utility-scale energy generation with far fewer turbines installed than was possible only a few years ago.

The B108 blades take advantage of the IntegralBlade® technology, as well as the superior Siemens Gamesa PowerEdge™ solution and lightning protection system. Recently produced, the first three B108 blades will be installed on the SG 14-222 DD prototype in Østerild, Denmark later in calendar year 2021.

ENGIE Selects Siemens Gamesa for Wind Farm in Peru

Siemens Gamesa has been selected by ENGIE to together write a new chapter of the energy revolution tackling climate change in Latin America with the installation of 260 MW of clean energy for Peru at the Punta Lomitas project in the southern region of Ica. This is ENGIE Energia Peru’s first wind farm in the country. To date, the Andean nation has an installed capacity of 400 MW of wind power over 8 operating parks and aims to triple its clean power generation by 2030. For its part, Siemens Gamesa has 164 MW of installed capacity in Peru.

Punta Lomitas will be equipped with 50 units of the SG 5.0-145 onshore turbine, and it is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2023. The turbines will operate at between 5 MW to 5.2 MW. The order includes a long-term operation and maintenance contract, placing Siemens Gamesa in a privileged position servicing 5 of Peru’s wind farms.

Globally ENGIE has a total of 10 GW wind power installed capacity, of which 20 percent has been carried out with Siemens Gamesa technology.

Peru’s wind power history began in 1996 with pilot installations, with the first big projects developed in 2006. The Peruvian government has pledged to reach 15 percent of clean power generation by 2030.

Siemens Gamesa Turbines for Wind Farm in Philippines

Siemens Gamesa has secured a landmark order to supply, install and commission 32 onshore turbines for the largest wind farm in the Philippines to date, marking resurgence for the wind industry in the country. The 160 MW Balaoi & Caunayan wind project will be developed by Asia’s pioneering renewable energy developers UPC Renewables and AC Energy and will feature 18 units of the SG 5.0-145 and 14 units of the SG 5.0-132 turbines. Both are among the most competitive turbine models in the region. Additionally, Siemens Gamesa signed a five-year contract to provide operation and maintenance services, ensuring optimized performance of the wind farm.

As the second most-populous country in Southeast Asia with demand for electricity growth at 6% annually, the Philippines has embarked on a concerted strategy to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels and has set a target of 35% for renewables energy installations by 2030. Continuous technology improvements have already made wind energy become one of the cheapest local sources of electricity in the country.

RWE’s US Onshore Wind Farm Scioto Ridge in Operation

RWE Renewables has started commercial operation on its 250 megawatt onshore Scioto Ridge Wind Farm in the US. The project, located in Hardin and Logan Counties, is powered by 75 Siemens Gamesa turbines and represents RWE’s first onshore wind project in Ohio.

Scioto Ridge is RWE’s 28th onshore wind farm in the U.S. and has the capacity to provide clean energy for more than 60,000 households.

Ohio has enormous potential for future projects, as wind power provides less than 2 percent of the total electricity generation in the state. In addition Ohio has a long history of industrial manufacturing, including approximately 52 wind-related factories – the most of any single state in the US.
