    Backing Biden, John Carr calls out political misuse of bishops' voting guide

    When the U.S. Catholic bishops updated their official voting guide ahead of the 2008 presidential election, one bishop suggested striking language from the document that named racism as an "intrinsic evil."

    "We'll never have a president who says racist things," the bishop said, recalls John Carr, who was a part of the discussion.

    While Carr told NCR that the suggestion was made "in good faith" and sincere belief that the country had made serious progress on fighting racism, it's now that very issue that is one of the primary reasons Carr penned an essay saying there are "morally grave" reasons why he's voting for former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump.

    "Mr. Trump demonizes immigrants, fans the flames of race and division, refuses to denounce racist groups or actions and seeks to divide the country by overt appeals to racial fears. Mr. Biden condemns racism and seeks national healing, speaks for voting rights and against systemic racism," wrote Carr. "At this moment of national reckoning on racial injustice and clear disparities in the impact of the coronavirus crisis, electing a president who will fight racism, not exacerbate it, is a moral imperative for me."

    While he's casting his vote for Biden in this election, he believes that Catholics who do likewise still need to be willing to challenge a potential Biden administration.

    "If people like me vote for Biden because of who he is and what he can do despite his position on abortion, we should be clear there's no mandate to wipe out the Hyde Amendment and remove all abortion restrictions or to impose requirements on Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services that make it impossible for them to serve the poor," he says.

    "The test for faithful citizens is not whether you're willing to challenge your adversaries, it's whether you're willing to challenge your friends," he said.

    "Where have Catholic Republicans been who say, 'Extreme immigration policies and racist rhetoric doesn't represent me'?" he asks. "I think that's the test. Part of the reason I'm homeless is that we're not called to be cheerleaders or chaplains. We've got to challenge ourselves and both parties."

    Last spring when President Donald Trump convened a call of Catholic leaders — including Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston, and U.S. bishops' president Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles — under the stated auspices of aiding Catholic education during the pandemic, he turned it into a pitch for his reelection, telling them that he was the best president in the history of the Catholic Church.

    "I really regret that they were on that phone call because I think they were used whether they intended to be or not," Carr told NCR. "I think there's a real danger for religious leaders to be used and that danger is growing in Washington."

    Newly obtained documents reveal that in the year and a half following Hurricane Maria, which caused an estimated $90 billion of damage in Puerto Rico, the Federal Emergency Management Agency only sent $3.3 billion in federal disaster aid to local authorities in the U.S. territory. Not only do these records undercut Trump’s claim at the time that Puerto Rico had received $91 billion in federal aid, but they make Trump’s new $13 billion FEMA aid package for Puerto Rico look even more politically motivated.

    Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in September 2017, killing around 3,000 people and destroying the islands’ electrical system. A year and a half later, in April 2019, Trump tweeted that “Puerto Rico got 91 Billion Dollars for the hurricane, more money than has ever been gotten for a hurricane before & all their local politicians do is complain & ask for more money.” It was clear at the time that Trump’s number was incorrect, so CREW requested records from FEMA to see how much money had actually been allocated and granted to local authorities by the agency for disaster relief in Puerto Rico.

    While these records are not a full accounting of the entire federal government’s disaster aid to the territory, they show that much of the $15 billion obligated by FEMA had not actually been spent.

    What we do know is that by April 10, 2019, when CREW sent the request, FEMA had granted only $3.3 billion in disaster relief to the government of Puerto Rico, or just over 59% of obligated public assistance funds, the FEMA documents reveal. The agency had also delivered none of the $16 million obligated toward hazard mitigation.

    The relatively small amount given to Puerto Rico’s government by FEMA in the aftermath of the hurricane calls into question the timing of last week’s White House announcement of a new $13 billion relief package for the territory. Trump’s announcement of $13 billion in aid just 46 days before the election, granted through FEMA and largely directed toward the government-owned Puerto Rico Electrical Power Authority, is roughly four times the amount of money given to local authorities by the agency in the 18 months immediately following the disaster. At the time, Trump railed on Puerto Rico’s politicians for asking for relief, but now with the election approaching, his approach has changed dramatically.

    The Puerto Rican population in Florida may well play a critical role in Trump’s performance in the state, one commentator pointed out. A large proportion of those who left the island following the hurricane settled in Florida. If Trump is using federal disaster aid to boost support in a critical swing state just weeks before the election, it would be incredibly troubling, but hardly surprising.

    This would not be the first time he has used taxpayer dollars to advance his own political interests. In fact, withholding federal aid for political reasons is precisely what he was impeached for earlier this year.

There is a sense of permanency attached to the Clintons’ name as regards their activities in Haiti, particularly the Clinton Foundation."

    Joe Biden heeft een concretere tech-agenda opgesteld, terwijl president Trump zich heeft gericht op belastingverlagingen en deregulering, terwijl hij techbedrijven bekritiseerde op anticonservatieve vooringenomenheid. Dat blijkt uit een analyse van de technische gegevens van de twee kandidaten door de Stichting Informatietechnologie & Innovatie die exclusief met Axios wordt gedeeld.

    Waarom het er toe doet: de tech-industrie moet zich voorbereiden op nog vier jaar impulsieve beleidsaanpak van Trump of voor een Biden-regering die waarschijnlijk kritisch zal zijn over technologie, maar traag om actie te ondernemen.

    Context: ITIF, dat het onderzoek samenstelde, is een branchevriendelijke denktank met tech executives in de raad van bestuur.

    Wat zij zeggen: Het rapport kadert de centrale technologiekwestie als uitdaging van China aan Amerikaanse overheersing.
    "De realiteit is dat Amerika niet langer de wereldwijde innovatie leider, althans op een per capita basis, en het dreigt te verliezen aan China in de komende tien jaar of twee .... Of de twee grote partijen deze dreiging begrijpen en prioriteit willen geven, is onduidelijk", schrijven de auteurs van het rapport.

    Enkele onderwerpen die het rapport belicht:
    Onderzoek en ontwikkeling: Biden heeft steun uitgesproken voor meer investeringen in R&D. Trump heeft voorgesteld om meer geld voor kunstmatige intelligentie te krijgen, maar probeert de steun voor onderzoek in het algemeen te verminderen.
    China: Trump richt zich op het hard aanpakken van China (zie: de lopende TikTok-saga) en omarmt een eenzijdige handelsaanpak. Biden heeft gezegd dat hij agressief wil zijn tegen China, maar pleit ervoor om nauwer samen te werken met bondgenoten op het handelsbeleid.
    Immigratie: Biden omarmt de minder restrictieve visie van zijn partij op immigratie, met inbegrip van de hoogopgeleide werknemer programma veel tech bedrijven sterk vertrouwen op. Trump heeft herhaaldelijk gewerkt aan het beteugelen van alle vormen van immigratie.
    Antitrust en contentmoderatie: Beide kandidaten ondersteunen mogelijke antitrustacties tegen grote technologiebedrijven en beteugelen artikel 230 van de Communications Decency Act, die online platforms beschermt tegen aansprakelijkheid voor door gebruikers geplaatste inhoud.
    Haatzaaien en desinformatie: Zowel Trump als Biden zeggen dat online platforms moeten veranderen hoe ze online inhoud matigen. Biden zegt dat er meer moet worden gedaan om desinformatie en haatzaaiende uitlatingen te voorkomen, terwijl Trump platforms herhaaldelijk heeft beschuldigd van anticonservatieve vooringenomenheid.
    Privacy: Beide kandidaten ondersteunen een nationale privacywet.
    Telecommunicatie: Trump's Federal Communications Commission rolde terug Obama-tijdperk netneutraliteit regels. Dat "verontwaardigd" Biden, volgens een CNET rapport.

    De bottom line: Republikeinen en Democraten zijn beide geworden kritischer van tech sinds 2016, terwijl de voortzetting van maatregelen die de industrie helpen concurrerend te blijven wereldwijd te ondersteunen. Wie in november wint, zal de nieuwe regering die lijn moeten doorlopen.

    Op zondagavond de New York Times liet een bom verslag dat geschetst wie Donald Trump heeft nauwelijks belasting betaald sinds 2000. De president was er snel bij om het rapport als "fake news" te verklaren, maar hij gaf geen volledige ontkenning.

    Michael Cohen, een lange tijd advocaat van Donald Trump heeft een goede greep op wat er gaande was achter gesloten deuren bij de Trump Organization. Maandag sprak hij over zijn ervaringen daar met Joshua Johnson van MSNBC.

    Cohen begon met uit te leggen dat het schandaal de basiskiezers van Donald Trump niet mag storen. "Hij heeft een bepaalde basis waar het echt niet uitmaakt wat hij doet. En deze mensen, voor wat hun gekke geloofssysteem ook is. En ik maakte deel uit van die Donald Trump sekte. En om welke reden dan ook, het is acceptabel. Maar dat is het absoluut niet."

    De voormalige advocaat vervolgde,

    "Hij kan eigenlijk de eerste president zijn die van het Witte Huis naar de gevangenis gaat. En ik denk niet dat hij ook alleen is. Ik denk dat Allen Weisselberg, zijn CFO, er medeplichtig aan is. Evenals Don, Ivanka, Eric. Ik geloof dat de hele Trump-clan medeplichtig is aan al deze belastingontduiking.

    Dit zijn rechtmatig wat rechter Pauley in mijn geval heeft gezegd. Dit zijn geavanceerde regelingen, waarbinnen de IRS van inkomen, van belastingen, die hard nodig zijn, te beroven. Je geld niet in Capital One of First Republic Bank steken zoals ik deed."
