    Deze alinea is natuurlijk niet onbelangrijk:

    Het toedienen van het medicijn is vanaf nu toegestaan in het kader van zogenoemde Compassionate use-programma’s. Die zijn bedoeld om patiënten die anders vrijwel zeker dood zouden gaan, toegang te geven tot behandelingen die nog in ontwikkeling zijn en die nog geen handelsvergunning hebben ontvangen.

    Ik vind het wel wat vreemd (als leek zijnde). Je zou zeggen dat je dan juist te laat komt met dat medicijn. Ik zou denken dat je hiermee misschien kunt zorgen dat iemand niet op de ic komt.

Ik houd mijn aandelen voorlopig nog even aan, zie dat de laatste weken de koers oploopt op een fors gestegen volume. En buiten remdesivir zit er nog voldoende ander moois in de pijplijn bij gilead. Verwacht verder breed in de markt dat er wel weer een correctie naar beneden kan komen en afgelopen periode is gebleken dat gilead dan mooi blijft liggen. Mensen die afhankelijk zijn van medicijnen (mn HIV is grote inkomstenbron) en behandelingen kunnen ook moeilijk zonder.

    Ik had ze gekocht na de deal met Galapagos want ze hebben een uitstekende deal. Ze krijgen de eerste optie om de kersen van de taart te lichten na fase 2. Deze zomer Filgotinib etc.

    Gilead's remdesivir OK'd in Europe for compassionate use in COVID-19

    The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is recommending the use of Gilead Sciences' (GILD +1.4%) remdesivir for treating COVID-19 in compassionate use programs.

    EMA advisory group CHMP is encouraging the company to make the antiviral available in a "fair and transparent" way to member states wishing to participate in international clinical trials or treating patients under compassionate use.

    Het Europees Geneesmiddelenbureau (EMA) beveelt het gebruik van remedivir van Gilead Sciences (GILD + 1,4%) aan voor de behandeling van COVID-19 in compassionate use-programma's.

    EMA-adviesgroep CHMP moedigt het bedrijf aan om de antivirale middelen op een "eerlijke en transparante" manier beschikbaar te stellen aan lidstaten die willen deelnemen aan internationale klinische proeven of patiënten willen behandelen onder compassievol gebruik.

    Gilead ramps up remdesivir production ahead of approvals

    Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) has been working with regulatory authorities to start additional expanded access programs for remdesivir, its investigational medicine for COVID-19, Chairman and CEO Daniel O'Day wrote on the company's website.

    Such programs allow hospitals or physicians to apply for emergency use of the treatment for multiple severely ill patients at a time.

    Even though the medicine isn't yet approved for use by any regulatory authorities, Gilead is taking the step of of expanding production to increase supply.

    "As a result we have reduced the end-to-end manufacturing timeline from approximately one year, to around six months," O'Day wrote.

    Its existing supply, including finished product and investigational medicine in final stages of production, amounts to 1.5M individual doses, which could equate to more than 140,000 treatment courses for patients.

    Gilead is providing all of its existing supply at no cost to treat patients with the most severe symptoms of COVID-19.

    Sets a goal of producing more than 500,000 treatment courses by October and more than 1M treatment courses by the end of the year.

    Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has recommended that in order to be prepared for COVID-19 becoming a seasonal occurrence, drug manufacturers should take the risk to ramp up production of therapeutics before phase 2 trials begin.

    Dat is goed nieuws. Geeft aan dat ze veel vertrouwen hebben in remdesivir. Mogelijk 140.000 mensen die ermee gered kunnen worden. Aangezien een vaccin nog wel even op zich laat wachten en globale inzet ook wel enige tijd zal duren verwacht ik dat ze nog voldoende kunnen verdienen. En wie weet is remdesivir nog breder inzetbaar.

    Breder ingezet pas na fase 3 want is andere indicatie wordt er verdiend maar niet op Corona want deze worden gedoneerd. Voordeel het is wel gelijk op de markt als pandemie voorbij , grote bekendheid en goodwill wereldwijd en dat is onbetaalbaar. Wel natuurlijk de volgende keer als iemand ziek wordt en het helpt goed want Corona zal blijven want niet iedereen zal zich vaccineren.

    Gilead Sciences (GILD) is conducting a number of trials across the globe for its antiviral Remdesivir. I'm very optimistic it is going to be shown effective against COVID-19 in April or May at the latest. I can't be 100% sure but I'm confident. Since my prior articles on the subject (see links below) there have been a few developments I should mention; Remdesivir has been OK'd in Europe for compassionate use in COVID-19 and Gilead's CEO wrote a letter about the ongoing efforts to get ready to distribute Remdesivir if OK'd. The letter is a little bit depressing in that Remdesivir is likely not a silver bullet. Yet there are also glimmers of hope in there. This article specifically deals with the key points made in the letter.

    Note that this is an investing website and I review this therapy from the perspective of a Gilead shareholder. It can come across as cold and calculated. I would love it if we could wave a magic wand and this would all go away. But that's unlikely to happen. My heart goes out to patients as well as everyone who's losing loved ones to this awful disease. I'd hoped remdesivir could be there in enormous quantities sooner and that ramping it up would have been easier. I'm very disappointed it's actually difficult and in the last place because it decreases the upside of the investment case.

    Another thing I'd like to emphasize is that because I'm looking at this from an investment (or trading so you will) perspective and perhaps that requires a different level of certainty around the information. I'm used to operating under uncertainty and betting on odds laid by unusual situations. I'm used to reading seemingly unrelated or second-hand information and evaluating its value for investing purposes.

    Sometimes this can be information as frivolous and annoying as reading about the 3rd marriage of the CEO, the cars he likes to drive and the spending habits of his latest partner. In that case I wanted to figure out why the CEO was selling seemingly deeply undervalued shares.

    This is very different from operating in the medical field where the professionals are extremely careful not to overstate effectiveness or inadvertently getting the hopes of patients or their family up about a certain treatment.

    It is not that I want to get people's hopes up when I'm not sure about a therapy. I don't. But as an investor waiting until the final medical all-clear about a therapy will ensure most of the upside is gone. Case in point being that I wrote about Gilead's Remdesivir on February 5 on The Special Situations Report after which it has shown a 28% outperformance vs. the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB). The gap understates the outperformance as Gilead actually is the largest holding within the ETF with a 10.29% weight.
