www.cbi.eu/market-information/tea/tre... . Increasing awareness of health and wellness benefits European consumers are increasingly looking for more ‘natural’, healthier and authentic products and are becoming more aware of health issues. As a result, large tea distributors use marketing slogans such as ‘green tea is good for digestion’. Green and herbal tea (blends) are considered healthier than black tea (see box 1 for more examples of market claims). However, these may not be used on your products without EU authorisation). The market for loose tea, whole-leaf tea and black (non-flavoured) tea is growing. 2. Mainstream teas in supermarkets versus premium teas in speciality shops EU industry and consumers demand (cheap) mainstream tea. At the same time, the demand for loose (whole-leaf) tea and single estate teas is rising. A growing number of consumers purchase these quality teas in speciality stores and the out-of-home markets. Supermarkets generally do not sell premium teas. Their innovations are limited to new types of packaging and the introduction of for example herbal and fruit infusions, i.e. blends of various herbs and /or fruits: a mixture of botanical ingredients other than the tea plant itself. 3. New materials and shapes for tea bags The demand for convenience products of higher quality is increasing. The well-known traditional filter paper sachets are now often replaced by bags made of nylon, non-woven commercially compostable or certified biodegradable materials. In addition, pyramid shaped tea bags have become more popular, leaving more room for whole-leaf tea to expand and to create a better, tastier brew. 4. Mechanisation in tea plucking solves labour shortage Traditionally, tea plucking has been an exclusively manual process. Many tea growers are currently coping with labour shortages and urbanisation. Therefore, the general trend in tea technology is industrial automation of plucking and drying. This process has advantages, as it is faster, but there is an increased risk of harvesting too many leaves, instead of ‘two or three leaves and a bud’ and even portions of the tea plant. 5. EU focus on quality The emphasis on quality in the EU market has increased the importance of collecting, cutting, sorting and mixing techniques. Exporters are increasingly asked to secure the quality of the products delivered. The development of resistant and more productive tea varieties is an important tool to sustain production and reduce the use of agrochemicals, for example. Over here you'll find an example of a tea research and development programme. 6. Modern communication technologies Mobile phones have already affected the markets because real time price information from exchange markets has become available to farmers and exporters. Up-to-date price information improves the bargaining position of farmers and exporters. In addition, mobile phones and other communication tools may be used for information transfers related to weather forecasts, cultivation practices and money transfers, for example. Up-to-date communication technology and quick time-to-respond is essential for exporters to stay connected to the market. 7. Economic recovery supports growth in hot drinks Since the economic decline in Europe in 2008, GDP and consumer trust in economic recovery is slowly increasing. As a result, hot drinks are seen as a necessity rather than a luxury as is reflected in a healthy increase in value sales by the industry. The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) for consumer confidence is increasingly positive: mid 2014 it was more than 5%. GDP growth is now expected to rise 1.5% in 2014 and 2.0% next year, while growth in the euro area, which was -0.4% for 2013 as a whole, is expected to be 1.2% in 2014 and 1.8% in 2015. GDP development differs from country to country in Europe as do tea preferences and trends in consumption. 8. Widespread sustainable certification for tea Sustainability has become a major focus of the EU food industry, making it necessary for suppliers of tea to follow this trend closely. Relevant consumer labels on the European market are UTZ Certified, organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance. UTZ Certified and Rainforest are particularly increasing their market shares. These labels are basically found in mainstream brands, whereas Fairtrade and organic labels prevail in premium (whole-leaf) teas. It is expected that farmers and exporters (providing related services) can bargain better incomes due to increased efficiency and insights in their position in the supply chain. 9. Transparency There is an increasing demand for transparency, both from consumers and the industry. Consumer safety and health concerns are drivers here, as well as the fact that prices are under pressure. Transparency is quite easily managed in the tea sector, as the sector is relatively well organised and does not encompass too many players. In addition, the supply chain is relatively short: tea packers increasingly source directly from tea gardens, hereby bypassing the auctions. In this way, producers/exporters may obtain price increases of up to 10 to 15 cents a kilogram. 10. Climate change adaptation To secure long-term supply, several climate mitigation and adaptation activities can be introduced on farms. Native trees, for example, could be planted along farm boundaries to store carbon, increase soil fertility and stabilise the tea microclimate; this reduces vulnerability to landslides, heavy rains and prolonged droughts. 11. Strict legislative requirements on residue levels by the EU: EU legislation regarding the use of pesticides and other chemicals is very strict. In addition, society calls for the tea industry to safeguard the consumer’s right to safe tea. This puts a lot of pressure on the tea industry and causes masses of paperwork. Accredited labs only test up to 500 different pesticides in dry tea leaves, whereas EU legislation lists more than 1000 maximum residue levels (MRLs) in tea. Tea produced in some Asian countries may face particular difficulties: in China and Vietnam, agro chemicals are widely available for low prices. Lately, there have also been issues with the maximum level of anthraquinone in tea leaves. Global exports of tea to Europe are relatively small. Tea is by far mostly consumed in the producing countries. For example, only 10% of China’s tea is exported to Europe. This makes it easy for local producers and traders to divert away from EU legislation as they have access to large local and regional markets. 12. New import tariffs in January 2014 Significant changes were made in the EU’s Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). This system provides preferential import tariffs for products from selected developing countries. This is interesting for the tea market because tea from China, for example, will no longer benefit from preferential import tariffs. This means that it is now more expensive to import tea from China. The tariff for green tea from China not exceeding 3kg packaging has a tariff of 3.2%. As price is leading this will have an impact on the trade of tea with China. The impact can be somewhat reduced when there is a shortage of a speciality tea on the world market.
www.just-food.com/analysis/where-coul... M&A Watch: Where could pure-play Wessanen pounce?
www.cadexco.bo/actual/boletin-intelig... In 2006, the EU consumed 243.3 thousand tonnes of tea, of which 135.4 thousand tonnes was consumed in the United Kingdom (International Tea Committee, 2008) . Other leading EU markets for tea are Poland, Germany, France, Ireland and The Netherlands. In terms of per capita consumption, tea is most popular in Ireland and the United Kingdom. In general, tea consumption in the EU shows a slight decrease, although green tea consumption is increasing . While consumption in traditional tea-drinking countries is decreasing, consumption in other countries such as Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic is increasing fast. The leading EU markets for organic tea are the United Kingdom and German

+ min 40% maakt € 14,00 p.a.
