Nokia Plans to Unfurl New Mobile Map App

Nokia is trying to regain ground in the market for mobile mapping services dominated by Apple and Google, whose maps display lines the floor of its offices in Washington D.C.

STOCKHOLM— Nokia Corp.'s NOK1V.HE +1.33% mapping business is making a new push to bring its maps directly to consumers as it tries to play catch up with rival mobile mapping services provided by Google Inc. GOOGL +1.08% and Apple Inc. AAPL +0.78%

The Finnish technology supplier will soon release free-of-charge map apps for mobile devices running Google's Android and Apple's iOS platform, said Nokia executive Sean Fernback said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

The apps, scheduled for release before the end of the year, would be unique in that they would work without an Internet connection, Nokia said.

Nokia's main mapping business is geared toward corporate customers, like auto makers and logistics-dependent businesses such as FedEx Corp. FDX +1.70% and Amazon.com, AMZN +0.99% who pay licensing fees to use the digital-mapping platform.

The impetus to make its maps available to consumers on a larger number of mobile devices comes as Nokia's maps are no longer tied to the fate of its shrinking and loss-making handset business, transferred to Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.75% earlier this year.

"We will go where the scale is," said Mr. Fernback, an executive at HERE which is Nokia's mapping unit.

For now, Google's and Apple's maps dominate the consumer market, who predominantly use Android and iOS devices. Both companies would have to approve the inclusion of Nokia's new product in their app stores, but Nokia doesn't expect this to be a problem.

"I'm convinced people are looking for alternatives," Mr. Fernback said. "Google Maps is a good solution for many, their maps work very well, but it has looked the same and done the same for a long time."

Google wasn't immediately available for comment.

Nokia's new apps will have functions that competitors lack, including the option to fully download maps for offline-use, as well as search without an Internet connection, Mr. Fernback said. Google Maps allows for more limited offline functionality.

Map navigation works through satellites so once a map is downloaded it can work without an Internet connection.

Nokia doesn't expect any immediate financial returns from the new map applications for Android and iOS. Unlike Google, which offers its maps free of-charge but shows advertisements next to search results, Nokia hasn't built up an advertising operation to support its service and has no plans to do so for now.

Offering free maps to everyday users should generate more feedback to fine-tune Nokia's location engine as each user of Nokia's maps on a smartphone or a tablet becomes a probe, Nokia's Mr. Fernback said.

The company struck a deal with Samsung Electronics Co. last month to make mapping applications for the South Korean group's Tizen operating system.

Nokia has tried to lure users from competitors in the past with poor results. In 2012, the company released a mapping app for iPhones to capitalize on initial criticism of Apple's new maps software, but Nokia's app received dismal reviews and few downloads. It was then pulled from Apple's app store.

"It was a rushed product that was never thoroughly proven," Mr. Fernback said. "Honestly, it went horribly wrong. But we've regrouped now."

    Nokia gaat navigatie-strijd aan

    STOCKHOLM -

    @domin8tor

Lekker vasthouden is mijn advies.

HERE maps the future of smarter cities

Detroit - Today HERE, a leader in navigation, mapping and location services, announced two new research collaborations with the SWARCO Group and the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force (OCCV). Together with its partners in the intelligent transportation space, HERE is showcasing technologies that have the potential to alleviate some of the chief headaches of urban motorists - traffic and parking - as well as make roads safer. At ITS World Congress in Detroit this week, HERE will demonstrate how these technologies could help cities transform their road networks.

"Cities are not getting any smaller and one of the problems that poses is more vehicles and more congestion. Fortunately, modern technologies can help," said Ogi Redzic, Vice President of Connected Driving at HERE. "In two demonstrations in Detroit next week, we look forward to showing how the HERE location cloud can be combined with smart new technology to help cities become better places to drive a car."

SWARCO and HERE pave the way for smoother traffic in the connected mobility space

At ITS World Congress, HERE and SWARCO will demonstrate how technology can help cities like Rome better control, predict and manage traffic flows. Through SWARCO's next generation traffic management solution, SWARCO's traffic signal and sensor data, integrated with HERE probe data, will help city managers better predict traffic and control vehicle flow. The HERE location cloud can leverage this traffic data to enable intelligent services that help automakers optimize driving strategies for their drivers.

ITS World Congress attendees will be able to view a kiosk display of traffic in Rome and witness how the integrated offering from HERE and SWARCO can improve traffic conditions in congested cities.

"SWARCO is committed to enriching people's lives and their intermodal mobility experience every day, through the use of advanced technology and delivery of seamless and sustainable mobility services," said Mr. Cees De Wijs, CEO of the SWARCO Group. "With the collaboration with HERE, our traffic management and control systems are evolving by exploiting the capability to interact with the vehicles, so to address individually the road users and improving the safety, efficiency and comfort of their travel."

HERE supports Oakland County Connected Driving Task Force initiative

At ITS World Congress, HERE will also showcase an alternate and potentially fail-safe means of maintaining accurate positioning in parts of a city where there isn't adequate GPS coverage, such as between high buildings, in parking garages or in underpasses.

With support from the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force (OCCV) and Paxgrid, HERE will show, through a parking demonstration, how this technology can provide precise location positioning of a vehicle with the use of two small roadside boxes known as WAVE DSRC units, but without GPS or cellular positioning information.

HERE is providing its precise maps for the technology, which has the potential to be a key element of future city-wide connected vehicle systems. Positioning technology like this could enable vehicles - as well as bicycles and skateboarders - to be part of a grid of moving objects. The ability for vehicles to know where other drivers are at any given moment could result in safer roads and fewer collisions. It could also help drivers overcome everyday frustrations like finding vacant parking spaces.

"My call for a countywide connected vehicle ecosystem is a great challenge. Early testing by the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force and its partners like HERE indicates that we are moving in the right direction," Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said.

The traffic management demonstration with SWARCO and the Oakland County localization demo

Will take place on Belle Isle in the HERE lot. Both demos will take place Monday, Sept. 8 through Thursday, Sept. 11.

Etisalat Nigeria signs managed services deal with Nokia Networks

For smooth network operation and maintenance as well as improved network and service performance at reduced operational cost

    15 September 2014

Abuja, Nigeria – Etisalat Nigeria, a leading telecom operator in the country, has renewed managed services contract with Nokia Networks for three more years with expanded services scope. Under the contract, Nokia Networks will manage the operator’s 3G and GSM networks and improve network efficiency, ensuring the best possible mobile broadband service experience for end users.

Nokia Networks has been providing managed services to Etisalat Nigeria since 2008. With Nigeria and Etisalat being a main focus in Nokia Networks’ strategy in Middle East and Africa (MEA), the company is committed to helping the operator and the country provide world class mobile broadband services.

“In line with Etisalat’s strategy to be the best quality of service operator in Nigeria and to improve the operational efficiency, we have signed a new managed services agreement with Nokia Networks,” said Matthew Willsher, CEO, Etisalat Nigeria. “Compared to the previous managed service model, the new agreement covers end-to-end operations and maintenance management for all network elements at Etisalat sites. It has also improved Network Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) according to global best in class standards. Nokia Networks has met our requirements with its delivery capability to achieve our strategy; therefore we have renewed the contract with the company.”

“Renewal of this contract underlines Etisalat’s confidence in our managed service capabilities in ensuring smooth network operations and maintenance,” said Igor Leprince, Senior Vice President and Head of MEA, Nokia Networks. “Our strength in the global scale and expertise to manage complex networks will continue to help Etisalat Nigeria provide the best service experience for its customers. Our further increased focus on innovation and standardization of processes and tools as well as six sigma quality training in our global delivery centers will help our operator customers worldwide including Etisalat transform their network quality and operational efficiency at reduced operational cost.”

Under the scope of the contract, Nokia’s managed services capabilities such as network planning and optimization, operations and maintenance services as well as care services will be provided to Etisalat Nigeria to manage its GSM and 3G networks. Nokia’s NetAct network management system will monitor, manage and optimize the operator’s multi-technology networks.

“This deal hits a large number of evolving managed services sweet spots, including the need for strong service performance, customer experience, security and optimization in what is an increasingly multi-vendor and multi-technology environment,” said Kris Szaniawski, Lead Analyst, Intelligent Networks, Ovum. “As the telecom network services industry experiences a second wave of managed services contracts, we see increased pressure on existing managed services relationships to become more customer-focused and deliver improved service quality. As a consequence there are significant opportunities for vendors such as Nokia Networks to deepen and strengthen their relationships with operators and position themselves as close strategic partners.”

In the first half of 2014, Nokia Networks boosted its managed services business by winning several new contracts and renewing expiring contracts in Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America. Many of the deals are multi-vendor and multi-technology by nature, spanning across 2G, 3G and LTE technologies. In our current managed services contracts, two out of three contracts are multi-vendor. Altogether, these contracts are covering approximately 200 million subscribers and 35000 sites. About 40% of these subscribers are supported by operators who are new managed services customers to Nokia Networks.

Nokia Networks has strong experience in managed service business for over 15 years. Today, the company is managing more than 230000 sites and 500 million subscribers across the world.

    About Etisalat Nigeria
In just five years of operations, Etisalat Nigeria has become a major industry player with a growing subscriber base of 19 million in a highly competitive market. Its portfolio of voice and data-centric products include – easy starter, easycliq, easyflex, easybusiness, and easyblaze; all tailor-made to meet the needs of its customers.

Etisalat Nigeria is one of the 19 operations of the Etisalat Group that spans across Africa, Middle East and Asia serving over 182 million subscribers; and it is committed to delivering innovative and quality services to its growing subscribers.
