13 June 2014 Vanadium: The metal that may soon be powering your neighbourhood By Laurence Knight BBC World Service Hawaii has a problem, one that the whole world is likely to face in the next 10 years. And the solution could be a metal that you've probably never heard of - vanadium. Hawaii's problem is too much sunshine - or rather, too much solar power feeding into its electricity grid. Generating electricity in the remote US state has always been painful. With no fossil fuel deposits of its own, it has to get oil and coal shipped half-way across the Pacific. That makes electricity in Hawaii very, very expensive - more than three times the US average - and it is the reason why 10% and counting of the islands' residents have decided to stick solar panels on their roof. The problem is that all this new sun-powered electricity is coming at the wrong place and at the wrong time of day. Hawaii's electricity monopoly, Heco, fears parts of the grid could become dangerously swamped by a glut of mid-day power, and so last year it began refusing to hook up the newly-purchased panels of residents in some areas. And it isn't just Hawaii.www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27829874
Met name in Duitsland.. Solar Energy Storage System Market In Germany Approaching A Boom The solar energy storage system market in Germany is approaching a boom period, according to many analysts, with a rapid uptick in sales likely as the technology enters wider use. The drive behind this boom is the simple fact that such systems are extremely practical for many people/purposes — most pay themselves off in only a few years, providing yet another way for renewable energy to help cut utility costs for homeowners.cleantechnica.com/2014/06/09/solar-en... Maar ook de metro in New York .. American Vanadium to Install Battery System in New York By Jim Polson Apr 23, 2014 American Vanadium Corp. (AVC), owner of the only known U.S. deposit of the metal, agreed to install an energy-storage system designed to reduce power costs for the agency that operates New York’s subways and buses. The $1.2 million project will feature three vanadium-flow batteries at a Metropolitan Transportation Authority building in downtown Manhattan, the Vancouver-based company said today in a statement. The system is expected to validate the company’s technology as a way to cut utility bills. The MTA plans to charge the batteries at night when power is cheap and discharge them when energy is more expensive, said Bill Radvak, American Vanadium’s chief executive officer. “The MTA wants it there as they are big believers in energy storage,” Radvak said in an interview. “This is a very high profile site that will stimulate the market.”www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-04-23/ame... In India: Imergy: A Novel Vanadium Electrolyte Storage Technology Comment Now Follow Comments At remote cell tower sites in India and Africa, getting electricity to keep the telecommunications system running is a costly and difficult engineering challenge. Some of the systems have weak connections to an unreliable and intermittent power grid, with diesel back-up. Other sites are off-grid, with only diesel engines to keep them functioning. Fuel is expensive, and shipping it is neither cheap nor easy. Theft of fuel is also a frequent occurrence. It’s a tough place to have to run a cell tower. It’s also a bad place to have to use most kinds of batteries. Temperatures can average close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and max out at 125. Which makes it a perfect test bed for Imergy to install its Vanadium Energy Redox Storage Platform. In India, the company already has 70 systems functioning, some of them for up to two and a half years. www.forbes.com/sites/peterdetwiler/20...
Leuke toevoeging. AB! Mooi artikel zeg.
www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/... Een iets eerder artikel over de nog steeds lange weg die american vanadium nog te gaan heeft, om (mijn) enthousiasme om gelijk een groot aantal van die aandelen op te pikken, te temperen... Maar ik koop er morgen alvast wel een stelletje..
