Aberdeen City Council adds Hyzon Hydrogen Waste Truck

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    21 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

The UK’s first hydrogen-fuelled waste collection vehicle was revealed in Aberdeen, in a move which continues to accelerate the city’s thriving hydrogen economy. While typical waste trucks are powered by diesel and petrol, the new waste truck will use green hydrogen from existing refuelling infrastructure in Aberdeen. The truck will start collecting waste and recycling around the city from early March and will be the first hydrogen-powered waste truck to become operational in the UK. It will initially cover wheeled bins in Garthdee, Kincorth, Bridge of Don, Newhills, Woodside/Hilton, Mastrick, Milltimber, and Rubislaw before moving to mixed recycling and bulk bins on other routes.

These journeys will not only result in estimated emissions savings of over 25kg CO2e/litre across a year, based on a diesel truck on similar routes, but will also collect data which will allow further rollouts of hydrogen-fuelled waste trucks in the future.

The hydrogen fuel cell waste truck is one of seven which will be deployed across seven pilot sites in northwest Europe, including the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Germany. Each truck will be tested in a range of environments from rural areas to city centres, demonstrating that hydrogen waste trucks provide an effective solution to reduce emissions from road transport.

The arrival of the waste truck follows a host of major hydrogen announcements by Aberdeen City Council in recent months, including the world’s first hydrogen double decker buses becoming operational, new funding secured for hydrogen projects and most recently, the appointment of international energy company, bp, as strategic commercial partner for the development of the transformative Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub.

    23 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

Robert Bosch GmbH, BMW AG, Hexagon Purus & TesTneT are working together on a flat hydrogen storage project called FlatHyStor. Together, the companies are seeking to develop a flat hydrogen storage solution that will be used in future fuel cell passenger vehicles. FlatHyStor aims to come up with a Functional design and testing of an innovative hydrogen tank system. The idea behind the solution the consortium is developing is to store H2 in the flat space of the light-duty vehicle underbody of a passenger car, which would typically have been meant for battery electric vehicle, where the battery modules would e integrated.

FlatHyStor is moving forward under BMW AG’s leadership. It will be responsible for the coordination of the various activities. Moreover, it will also be providing the technical specifications for the H2 storage system’s integration and application.

The responsibilities of the other members of the consortium include Hexagon Purus’ development of the high-pressure H2 cylinders in addition to the vehicle integration structure that will be required. Robert Bosch GmbH is going to be developing the necessary advanced tank valve. It will also take on the development of a high-pressure regulator technology. Finally, TesTneT Engineering GmbH will be adopting the responsibility of delivering the storage component validation according to the latest standard and codes evaluations.

The first FlatHyStor prototypes for the 700-bar high-pressure hydrogen storage systems are set to be ready for delivery by the end of this year. The researchers are hoping the result will offer a more practical solution to contain the H2 in fuel cell vehicles. Currently, at this early stage of the project, it is unclear specifically what passenger vehicle or model the solution is being developed to suit.

The funding for the project comes from German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy BMWi in the form of a EUR 6 million grant.

VDI & VDE for Hydrogen Powered Commercial Vehicles in EU

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

On the way to climate neutrality, according to EU specifications, CO2 emissions from heavy commercial vehicles are to be reduced by 30 percent by 2030. To achieve this goal, around 200,000 emission-free trucks would have to be in use in Europe by 2030. This is the result of the new VDI/VDE study "Climate-friendly commercial vehicles - comparison of different technology paths for CO2-neutral and CO2-free drives".

In order to meet the EU requirements, VDI and VDE clearly rely on fuel cell drives for long-distance transport of heavy commercial vehicles and battery-electric drives for small commercial vehicles in urban areas. Battery vehicles are generally more efficient, but fuel cell vehicles have advantages in terms of range and refueling time. The range in particular poses a challenge for battery-powered commercial vehicles. They struggle with the battery weights on board and a long charging time. Hydrogen can solve the problem here because it has a greater energy density.

The charging and filling station infrastructure for commercial vehicles also does not meet operational requirements. “The recent political plan to no longer promote the construction and operation of hydrogen filling stations would have fatal consequences. In this way, politicians are obstructing the EU requirements for reducing CO2 emissions from heavy trucks,” warns Martin Pokojski, Chairman of the VDI/VDE Technical Committee for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicles. "Now is the right time to further expand existing hydrogen filling stations and to add new ones."

The charging stations and hydrogen filling stations currently do not meet the requirements of heavy commercial vehicles. The current 90,700 bar filling stations are only suitable for trucks to a limited extent in terms of the quantities required and the speed with which they can be filled up.

By 2030, 70 truck-compatible H2 filling stations would have to be set up in Germany, distributed evenly across the motorway network. Only 25 of the 16,100 charging points are currently suitable for trucks with batteries. To cover just 5 percent of the vehicle population, 1,200 charging points with a charging capacity of 720 kW would be required.

According to VDI and VDE, another problem is that the costs for climate-friendly commercial vehicles are still too high. Only when the operating costs for freight forwarders, consumers and industry are within acceptable limits will they switch to climate-friendly commercial vehicles. The associations assume that manufacturing costs will fall as a result of mass production and that the competitiveness of diesel vehicles will decrease as a result of CO2 taxes and access restrictions

The authors of the study agree: In the medium to long term, climate-friendly commercial vehicles can help to reduce the economic costs in the area of mobility compared to the status quo. The areas of research and development in particular need funding to develop innovative technologies in commercial vehicle production. This would also accelerate competitiveness. In addition, tax incentives are needed so that fleet operations, for example in inner-city areas, increasingly switch to electrified commercial vehicles.

ÖBB Postbus Signs Pact for Zero-Emission Solaris Buses

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    07 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Solaris Bus & Coach sp zoo has signed another framework agreement with the Austrian bus company Österreichische Postbus AG. It stipulates a possibility to deliver up to 106 battery-electric and hydrogen buses that would be deployed throughout Austria. The models offered include Urbino 9 LE electric and Urbino 12 hydrogen buses. The agreement envisages deliveries in the years 2022-2025.

In February this year, Solaris and Österreichische Postbus AG, the largest bus company in Austria and a leader in regional public bus transport, concluded a framework agreement for the delivery of up to 106 state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly buses. Possible orders are to be fulfilled in the years 2022-2025 with an option to prolong this period until 2028. Buses to be purchased by the client include up to 24 of the latest, zero-emission Urbino 9 LE electric buses, and up to 82 Urbino 12 hydrogen buses.

The Solaris hydrogen buses offered under the agreement are the most innovative vehicles in the manufacturer’s range. Thanks to their extremely quiet operation and no local emissions, the buses have become increasingly popular among European carriers. The framework agreement is yet another agreement for hydrogen buses concluded between Österreichische Postbus AG und Solaris. The previous contract signed in February 2021 assumed, among other things, the delivery of up to 40 Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses.

The energy that powers the hydrogen buses is generated by 70 kW fuel cells. Electricity, produced via reverse electrolysis, is transferred directly to the driveline, consisting of an axle with electric motors. The sole by-products generated during this process are heat and steam. The hydrogen needed to propel the bus will be stored in gaseous form in five tanks with a total volume of 1560 litres, mounted on the bus’s roof. Additionally, every ordered vehicle will be equipped with a Solaris High Power battery.

The contract also provides for the possibility to purchase Urbino 9 LE electric buses, the youngest member of the electric Solaris family, which was launched in September 2021. This versatile model has been designed in such a way that it can be adapted for class I or class II type approval. Thus, the bus provides an excellent link between the urban and suburban road networks. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the vehicle will perform excellently on steep climbs and on tight mountain bends in Austria. These 9-metre buses will be equipped with a central electric motor. The propulsion system will be powered by energy derived from a set of Solaris High Energy batteries with a total capacity of about 280 kWh, and the spacious interior will take at least 65 passengers. The modernised design in the rear of the bus provides more headroom, which will enhance the quality of the journey.

Solaris Urbino Hydrogen Bus Trial Starts in Jaworzno

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    09 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

The city of Jaworzno has started testing one of the most technologically advanced Solaris vehicles, the Urbino 12 hydrogen bus. The trials will last four weeks. Local transport operator PKM Jaworzno has been setting standards in the successful implementation of e-mobility for many years. Now, the carrier wants to learn all about what the deployment of hydrogen has to offer in urban transport.

Public transport operator PKM Jaworzno is just starting test rides of the Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen bus. They will last four weeks, from 2 to 31 March. The bus is to be put in service, among other places, on the most commonly used routes in Jaworzno, connecting the largest residential districts of the city. It will operate 7 days a week, all day long, above all on bus routes 303 and 307. This will provide numerous possibilities to travel on this unique vehicle and to learn more about hydrogen technology. Hydrogen refilling will take place at a mobile station run by industrial company AirProducts.

The basic equipment featured on the hydrogen-powered Urbino buses includes ultra-modern packs of 70 kW fuel cells and five composite tanks for hydrogen storage, with a total capacity of 1560 l, placed on the bus roof, as well as two e-motors of 125 kW each. Hydrogen stored in gaseous form in tanks is directed to a fuel cell where electricity is produced as a result of a reaction whereby hydrogen combines with oxygen. This electricity is then transferred to the driveline. Due to the technology applied, the bus is capable of covering 350 km on a single refill, and the sole by-products generated during the process are heat and steam.

Operator PKM Jaworzno and Solaris Bus & Coach have been continuously collaborating for 21 years now. So far, over 80 Urbino buses sporting the operator’s distinctive colours have been plying the streets of the city, of which over half are zero-emission electric vehicles. In 2022, the company will be operating a staggering 50 e-buses.

Solaris to Supply Hydrogen Buses to to Palma de Mallorca

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    10 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Solaris has won a tender for the delivery of five hydrogen-powered Urbino 12 hydrogen buses to Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the island of Mallorca. The contract is worth about EUR 4 million. The Board of Directors of EMT-Palma, a municipal transport company in Palma de Mallorca, has decided to purchase five hydrogen-powered, absolutely zero-emission Solaris vehicles. This investment is part of the “Green Hyslan” project, financed with EU funds. The project objective seeks to promote the development of clean energy as part of initiatives aimed at combating climate change by 2050. As a result of the planned activities, the Spanish island is to become a European benchmark in terms of using zero-emission energy.

Hydrogen buses are an essential part of Solaris’s e-mobility offering and an attractive proposition for towns and cities that are striving to achieve zero-emission public transport systems. The highly technologically-advanced Urbino 12 hydrogen bus was launched in 2019 at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm as a complement to battery-electric products. The launch of another vehicle of this type, the articulated Urbino 18 hydrogen bus, is slated for the 2nd half of 2022.

The Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen bus performs outstandingly in city spaces. It produces no local emissions because the sole by-product of the chemical reaction that takes place in the hydrogen fuel cell is water. Thanks to the employment of advanced technologies it guarantees a range of up to 350 km. The refuelling takes only a few minutes, which makes the bus very easy to handle and provides flexibility for local transport operators. Compared to diesel vehicles, it produces only slight vibrations and the noise level is barely noticeable.

At present, Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses can be seen, for example, on the streets of Bolzano in Italy, Cologne and Wuppertal in Germany as well as in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. Now these places will be joined by the over 800,000-strong city of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of one of the most famous tourist islands in Europe.

    Beleggen in waterstof

Italian Students & Alpine Unveil Hydrogen Concept Car

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    22 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Twenty-eight Masters students studying Transportation Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Italy presented their own new take on the concept of sportiness with the A4810 Project by IED, a hydrogen-powered concept car, based on a brief from the Alpine design team. This is a car that embraces next-generation technologies while also championing the traditional characteristics of the French brand that was founded in 1955. The young designers created the A4810 Project by IED: a light yet powerful and agile concept car that boasts pure driving pleasure. During the design phase, the students sought to combine vision and innovation, without losing sight of the traditional roots of the French car manufacturer.

Furthermore, they chose a name that conveyed the brand’s legacy. In fact, 4810 is the height (in meters) of the Mont Blanc: the highest and most emblematic peak in the Alps that sits at the border between Italy and France, like a bridge connecting IED and Alpine. The car manufacturer is named after the very same mountains and evokes the joy of driving along their winding roads.

The Alpine A4810 Project by IED (length 5,091 mm, width 2,010 mm, height 1,055 mm, wheelbase 2,717 mm) is a two-seater supercar with the experimental combination of the shape of a berlinette with a hydrogen powertrain. While the engine and fuel tanks are built like those on a typical hypercar, the subtraction process is proof of considerable innovation. The design alternates between empty and full spaces, giving the vehicle a lightweight look and aerodynamic features inspired by Formula 1 models. Furthermore, the A4810 Project by IED was tasked with bringing the brand to the cusp of the sports car category.

The French spirit has been skilfully preserved: while avoiding the pitfalls of unnecessary formal elements, designers focussed on the overlapping layers and sculptural aspects of the car’s silhouette. The bi-tone colours, matte black, and carbon fibre highlights create a bold contrast with each part of the car, making them stand out according to their function: aerodynamic, mechanical, or merely formal.

The team of students used digital tools to design the interior through sketches, 3D models, renderings, animations, and HMI (Human Machine Interface) development. In incorporating hydrogen power supply, it means that they developed a full-fledged concept that is almost ready to take to the roads of a much more sustainable future, one without emissions.

    Toyota maakt stappen met waterstof-verbrandingsmotor
    Lars Krijgsman 5 uur geleden

    Jan Lemkes 19 min geleden

Hyundai Recalls 54 Nexo Vehicles for Possible Hydrogen Leak

Hyundai is recalling 54 examples of the 2019 Nexo hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered crossover because of the possibility of leaking hydrogen, which could lead to a fire. These vehicles have production dates from August 10, 2018, to December 17, 2018. according to the filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the receptacle filter can detach immediately after filling with hydrogen. This could cause the refueling inlet not to seal correctly. If this occurs, then fuel could leak out, and in the presence of an ignition source, there might be a fire.

Hyundai says that the cause of this problem is: "The supplier used a prototype epoxy-bonded filter in place of the original laser-welded filter specified by design."

On March 16, 2022, Hyundai Motor Company notified its North American division that a 2019 Nexo caught fire in South Korea after refueling at a hydrogen station. The company investigated the incident and found that material from the fuel inlet detached and allowed hydrogen to leak out. The owner heard an abnormal noise and opened the fuel filler door to investigate. The investigation suspected that static electricity from the person's hand discharged into the fuel cap and ignited the leaking hydrogen. This caused a fire. The fueling station had a fire suppression system that extinguished the blaze within seconds, according to Hyundai's submitted chronology. The investigation found this vehicle didn't have the proper, laser-welded fuel inlet receptacle filter. The automaker believes the case in South Korea is the only Nexo fire to come from this defect.

HyTrucks Expands Hydrogen Transport in Europe

    Strategic Research Institute

After the introduction of HyTrucks in the spring of 2020 more and more parties have expressed interest in joining this initiative and working together on freight transport based on hydrogen. The aim is to have at least 1,000 trucks in the Netherlands, Belgium and West Germany driving on hydrogen by 2025. The Port of Rotterdam has now been expanded to include 60 parties in three countries and is being implemented in close collaboration with the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Duisburg. It concerns hydrogen suppliers, truck manufacturers, refuelling station operators, forwarders and shippers. Other parties are still applying to join.

Along with electrification and other existing alternatives, clean hydrogen is needed in the energy mix to enable heavy road haulage to be emissions-free. With the developments in trucks and the network, it is possible to go long distances with a truck driving on hydrogen. This will make achieving the European climate goals and implementing and enforcing zero emissions in cities feasible. The transition to completely green hydrogen is an important precondition for this, which is being worked on jointly through policy and governmental support.

HyTrucks is one of Europe’s largest projects aimed at developing hydrogen-powered trucks and the associated infrastructure. The project leads to improved air quality and a reduction in CO2 emissions of an estimated 100,000 tons, the equivalent of 110 million truck-kilometres.

Allison Transmission has been selected to provide the propulsion system for the UK’s first hydrogen fuel cell refuse collection vehicle. Aberdeen City Council has chosen to pair a 250 kW Hyzon electric motor with an Allison 3000 Series transmission in conjunction with a 45 kW fuel cell. The council’s decision to select the 3000 Series transmission is a testament to the capability of Allison’s dynamic portfolio of propulsion solutions, which can support and optimize emerging propulsion technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells.

The RCV, which is powered by Aberdeen’s existing hydrogen infrastructure, has a range of 155 miles (250 km), enabling it to travel greater distances than existing electric vehicles. This range enables these refuse trucks to complete their route without returning to the depot to recharge. Aberdeen City Council’s innovative new hydrogen-powered refuse truck is based on the 4200 mm wheelbase HH-Mercedes-Benz Econic Hydrogen chassis and has a 15kg tank capacity at 350 bar and 140 kWh batteries at 700 volts.

A total of 10 hydrogen-powered buses will be delivered to two clients in the Upper Bavaria region next year. 5 Urbino 12 hydrogen buses have been ordered by the carrier Busreisen Ettenhuber GmbH, and another 5 units will head to the bus company Martin Geldhauser GmbH & Co KG. Two private bus companies from Bavaria, Busreisen Ettenhuber GmbH and Martin Geldhauser GmbH & Co KG, have ordered a total of 10 Urbino 12 hydrogen buses. These state-of-the-art vehicles will enhance the emission-free public transport in the region of Glonn and Hofolding in Upper Bavaria. The deliveries are slated to be completed by March 2023.

The bus companies have ordered 5 hydrogen buses each. The vehicles will feature similar technical parameters. Their drive unit will consist of an axle with integrated electric motors. A set of 70 kW cutting-edge fuel cells will be installed in each bus. The hydrogen will be stored in five tanks with a total volume of 1560 litres, boasting the best safeguards available on the market. Owing to the advanced technology used in them, the buses will be capable of covering at least 350 km on a single refill. These hydrogen-powered Solaris buses will also feature a relatively small Solaris High Power traction battery, whose role is to support the fuel cell at moments of increased demand for electricity.

The buses will carry up to 34 seated passengers each. Also noteworthy is the fact that the hydrogen vehicles destined for Upper Bavaria will be equipped with the MobilEye Shield+ system, which helps to monitor the vehicle’s blind spot. If a pedestrian or a cyclist is detected in the blind spot, the system will warn the driver about it using both audible and light signals. The MobilEye Shield+ will also support the driver with its additional functionalities, such as traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning alerts and a passive braking assistant. Along with the buses, the carriers will also receive a remote diagnostics system called eSConnect, developed by Solaris. It will allow them to optimise the fleet’s operation by increasing its availability and the limiting downtime of the buses, as well as by preventing any unnecessary drives back to the bus depot.
