Hyzon Unveils New Hydrogen Storage System Leading global supplier of zero emission hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles Hyzon Motors Inc has developed new onboard hydrogen storage system technology capable of reducing the weight and manufacturing cost of commercial vehicles powered by Hyzon’s hydrogen fuel cells. The new patent-pending onboard hydrogen storage system technology integrates lightweight composite materials with the system’s metal frame. It has the potential to reduce the overall weight of the system by 43%, storage system costs by 52% and the required manufacturing component count by 75%, based on a single-rack system with capacity to store five hydrogen cylinders. In addition to reducing the weight and costs, the storage system can be configured to hold varying numbers of hydrogen tanks. The smallest version can hold five tanks, and can be extended to seven tanks because of its modular design. A separate version can hold ten tanks, appropriate for trucks driving longer distances. While these two options are mounted behind the cab, a third storage system allows for an additional two tanks to be mounted to each side of the truck, extending the vehicle’s range without diminishing the size of the trailer. The development of this technology was a cross-Atlantic collaboration between Hyzon Europe and Hyzon US, with the company planning to produce this new system in its Rochester, NY, and Groningen, the Netherlands, facilities. The technology will be implemented in Hyzon’s vehicles world-wide. Hyzon also expects to license this new system to other commercial vehicle companies. As part of the Hyzon Zero Carbon Alliance, a global consortium of companies active along the hydrogen value chain, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are expected to have access to the technology. The new technology has already been installed in pilot trucks in Europe and is expected to be deployed across all vehicles beginning in Q4 2021. Source - Strategic Research Institute

Hyzon & RenewH2 to Develop Hydrogen Fueling Stations in US Leading global manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles Hyzon Motors Inc announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with US based sustainable hydrogen production, liquefaction, distribution and dispensing company RenewH2 to collaborate on the supply and demand side of liquid hydrogen production. Under the MoU, RenewH2 plans to reform biogenic methane gas to generate hydrogen. The hydrogen would then be liquefied and delivered to hydrogen fueling stations, which are expected to be developed in collaboration with Hyzon. Through this collaboration, the stations can be located near Hyzon customers to help provide consistent demand for the fuel. Both companies are interested in expanding liquid hydrogen infrastructure due to its advantages over hydrogen gas. Because of its power density, liquid hydrogen is projected to provide a range approximately twice as far as current 700 bar gaseous hydrogen. Range for liquid hydrogen vehicles is expected to be up to 1,000 miles, based on Hyzon’s recently announced agreement to develop ultra-heavy-duty liquid hydrogen-fueled trucks. The greater range means fewer fueling stations, thereby reducing the need for liquid hydrogen to be transported to many locations. In addition, the refueling infrastructure capital and operating costs are expected to be lower when compared to gaseous hydrogen, due to the elimination of the compression and refrigeration equipment. RenewH2 is expected to begin producing hydrogen in its Wyoming facility in 2023, with ultimate capacity of 300 tons per day using steam methane reformer units. In addition to producing liquid hydrogen, RenewH2 expects to store and deliver the fuel. Per the MoU, the fuel could be delivered by a fleet of Class-8 Hyzon trucks, owned and operated by RenewH2.

Hyzon Starts Shipping Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks to Clients Hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck company Hyzon Motors said that it is ramping up operations in the wake of its merger with blank-check firm Decarbonization Plus Acquisition Corp, including shipping its first trucks to European customers. The company, which reported second-quarter earnings Wednesday, said it is also preparing to start its first customer trials in the United States. Like other transportation companies that have gone public via a merger with a special purpose acquisition fund, Hyzon doesn’t yet have any revenue to speak of. Instead, Hyzon is banking on the huge injection of capital from the transaction , more than USD 500 million, and growing customer orders to take it to positive cash flow. As of now, the company reported a net loss for the quarter of USD 9.4 million, including USD 3.5 million in R&D expenses. It had a negative adjusted EBITDA of USD 9.1 million. In addition to manufacturing hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, Hyzon is also investing in hydrogen fuel production hubs, a key piece of infrastructure for technology uptake. In April, the company signed an MOU for a joint venture with renewable fuels company Raven SR for up to 100 hydrogen production hubs. Gordon confirmed the first two will be in the Bay Area. Hyzon Hydrogen-Truck for Trial with Total Transportation Leading global supplier of zero-emission fuel cell electric heavy vehicles Hyzon announced the signing of a trial agreement with Total Transport Services Inc, a prominent port trucking company in Southern California and a leading provider of logistics services with distinct expertise in distributing imports within the US and Canada. Under the agreement, Hyzon will provide a Class 8 heavy-duty fuel cell electric truck to TTSI for a 30-day trial in Q4. The truck, built on a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia chassis, is expected to have 600 peak horsepower and a range of up to 400 miles. Because of those specifications, the truck can be placed into TTSI’s existing operations, hauling up to 82,000lbs gross combined vehicle weight, a standard load for TTSI, and taking advantage of the public heavy-duty hydrogen refueling station in Wilmington, CA, nearby TTSI’s Long Beach Custom’s House operations. The trial will mark TTSI’s first experience with a zero-emissions vehicle capable of 400 miles range. During the trial, TTSI plans to run a full load from Long Beach to Sacramento, before exhibiting the vehicle at the NorCal Fleet Academy & Expo, October 6-7, 2021. Prior to arriving at TTSI, the Hyzon Class 8 fuel cell truck is expected to be part of the Ride & Drive at the ACTExpo Conference in Long Beach, CA on August 31st – September 1, 2021. According to TTSI, about 13,000-14,000 trucks operate at the Long Beach port every year, emitting about 2,600 tons of CO2. As such, transitioning these fleets to zero-emissions would have an outsized impact on the emissions levels in the area and thus the surrounding communities. Source - Strategic Research Institute

Board clears Hyundai Mobis’ $1.1 billion fuel cell capacity expansion 227 Views The board of directors at Hyundai Mobis have reportedly approved investment of KRW 1.32 trillion ($1.1 billion) to expand the company’s fuel cell production capacity in South Korea. Local reports say the earmarked spending will increase at its Icheon and Ulsan plants. The first produces fuel cell stacks and the second the fuel cell systems to be supplied to Hyundai Motor Co. These hydrogen fuel cell systems will power the Hyundai Nexo and the XCIENT trucks. Currently, the auto parts maker has capacity to produce fuel cells to manufacture 6,000 FCEVs per year. By 2030, after a KRW 7.6 trillion investment, this capacity should increase to 500,000 FCEVs/year, in line with Hyundai Motor Group’s production targets. The long-term ambition for the company is to develop an entire hydrogen value chain, from fuel cell production to hydrogen-powered logistics and mobility services, Kallanish notes. Hyundai plans to export 1,600 units of its XCIENT fuel cell electric trucks by 2025 through a joint venture with Swiss company H2 Energy. The JV leases the trucks on a pay-per-use basis, which includes the supply of fuel. The service helps companies to decarbonise operations without forking the initial investment of switching their diesel truck fleet to zero-emission vehicles. The carmaker is targeting annual sales of 110,000 FCEVs globally by 2025. Gabriela Farhangi UK
China to build hydrogen fuel cell city cluster 293 Views China's Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shanghai, and Guangdong provinces were approved by the five Chinese national departments as the first batch of fuel cell vehicle demonstration city clusters. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster centered on Beijing will promote hydrogen-fueled electrical vehicles, Kallanish notes. It was mentioned in the "Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Implementation Plan (2021-2025)" issued by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology on 16 August. The scale of the hydrogen energy industry chain in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region will exceed CNY 50 billion ($7.72 billion) by 2023 and 3,000 fuel cell vehicles will be promoted in the region. At the same time, Beijing will cultivate 5-8 leading enterprises in the hydrogen energy industry chain and plans to reduce carbon emissions by 1 million tonnes by 2023. A total of 37 hydrogen refueling stations will also be completed by then. Before 2025, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region needs increase the number of leading enterprises in the hydrogen energy industry chain to 10-15 and to reduce carbon emissions by 2m t. About 10,000 units fuel cell vehicles will be promoted in the region, speeding up the sales comapred with the past three years. By 2050, the demand for hydrogen energy in China is expected to be close to 60m t, achieving carbon emissions reduction of about 700m t. The goal of hydrogen energy accounting for more than 10% of the energy system will be reached at that time in order to approach carbon neutrality. The latest data released by the China Automotive Manufacturers Association (CAAM) shows that from January to July this year, the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles were 664 and 675 units respectively, up 48.5% and 47.7% year-on-year. Russia eyes 25,000 EVs, hydrogen charging stations by 2030 204 Views Russia plans to begin a radical energy transition by 2030 in favour of electric transport, says the government. It approved the concept for the production of at least 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) by 2024, Kallanish notes. The plan will be implemented in two stages: from 2021 to 2024 and from 2025 to 2030. According to the document, for the first stage, in addition to the production of tens of thousands of EVs in Russia, at least 9,400 charging stations will appear. As part of the second stage, at least 72,000 more charging stations and at least 1,000 hydrogen refueling stations will be put into operation, and the production of electric vehicles "will reach at least 10% of the total volume of vehicles produced." The development of production will also create at least 39,000 high-performance jobs. During the next events in the autumn of 2021, it was decided to draw up a list of pilot territories where they will begin to create a charging infrastructure. In 2022, it is planned to conduct an experiment - electric vehicles will be allowed free travel on toll sections of state roads. Earlier, the success in the development of electric transport was announced by the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin. According to him, the Russian capital in terms of the volume of electric fleet of public transport has superiority over the cities of Europe. So, by mid-August 2021, the number of electric buses on Moscow streets reached 700. The serial production of the first Russian electric vehicle Zetta is scheduled to begin by the end of 2021. Production is set to take place at project partner Togliatti's automotive plant. It plans to produce more than 15,000 units/year, half of which will go to foreign markets. With a maximum speed of 120 km/hour, the EV has an entry-level starting price of RUB 550,000 ($7,403). Russia is yet to launch mass production of EVs. Kamaz and SPbPU are targeting first domestic electric vehicle production of Kama-1 later this or next year, with sales of 20,000 cars/year. Domestic carmaker Avtotor also said it will begin EV production in 2023. Avtovaz, which is producing Lada cars, is preparing for EV production in the next ten years. Russian domestic sales of electric vehicles continued to increase in January-May to 650 units, which is seven times more than in the same period of 2020 (92 units). In May alone, 148 EVs were sold, which is almost 10 times more than in May 2020 (15). Svetoslav Abrossimov Bulgaria
