    WASHINGTON (ANP/RTR) - De Amerikaanse beurswaakhond SEC heeft elf mensen aangeklaagd voor hun rol bij het opzetten en promoten van een piramidezwendel met cryptoplatform Forsage. Daarmee hadden ze meer dan 300 miljoen dollar opgehaald bij investeerders.

    Het platform werd begin 2020 opgezet en trok volgens de toezichthouder miljoenen particuliere beleggers. Geld dat nieuwe investeerders inlegden zou zijn gebruikt om andere deelnemers te betalen. Onder de aangeklaagden zijn ook de vier oprichters van Forsage.

    In hoeverre de SEC alle elf personen effectief kan aanpakken, is onduidelijk. Een aantal van hen zou volgens de meest recente adresgegevens in Rusland, Georgië en Indonesië wonen.

    Hackers drained almost $200 million in cryptocurrency from Nomad, a tool that lets users swap tokens from one blockchain to another, in yet another attack highlighting weaknesses in the decentralized finance space.

    Nomad acknowledged the exploit in a tweet late Monday.

    “We are aware of the incident involving the Nomad token bridge,” the startup said. “We are currently investigating and will provide updates when we have them.”

    It’s not entirely clear how the attack was orchestrated, or if Nomad plans to reimburse users who lost tokens in the attack. The company, which markets itself as a “secure cross-chain messaging” service, wasn’t immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.

    Blockchain security experts described the exploit as a “free-for-all.” Anyone with knowledge of the exploit and how it worked could seize on the flaw and withdraw an amount of tokens from Nomad — sort of like a cash machine spewing out money at the tap of a button.

    It started with an upgrade to Nomad’s code. One part of the code was marked as valid whenever users decided to initiate a transfer, which allowed thieves to withdraw more assets than were deposited into the platform. Once other attackers cottoned on to what was going on, they deployed armies of bots to carry out copycat attacks.

    “Without prior programming experience, any user could simply copy the original attackers’ transaction call data and substitute the address with theirs to exploit the protocol,” said Victor Young, founder and chief architect of crypto startup Analog.

    “Unlike previous attacks, the Nomad hack became a free-for-all where multiple users started to drain the network by simply replaying the original attackers’ transaction call data.”

    Sam Sun, research partner at crypto-focused investment firm Paradigm, described the exploit as “one of the most chaotic hacks that Web3 has ever seen” — Web3 being a hypothetical future iteration of the internet built around blockchain technology.

    Nomad is what’s known as a “bridge,” a tool that lets users exchange tokens and information between different crypto networks. They’re used as an alternative to making transactions directly on a blockchain like Ethereum, which can charge users high processing fees when there’s lots of activity happening at once.

    Instances of vulnerabilities and poor design have made bridges a prime target for hackers seeking to swindle investors out of millions. More than $1 billion in crypto assets has been stolen through bridge exploits so far in 2022, according to a report from crypto compliance firm Elliptic.

    In April, a blockchain bridge called Ronin was exploited in a $600 million crypto heist, which U.S. officials have since attributed to the North Korean state. Some months later, Harmony, another bridge, was drained of $100 million in a similar attack.

    Like Ronin and Harmony, Nomad was targeted through a flaw in its code — but there were a few differences. With those attacks, hackers were able to retrieve the private keys needed to gain control over the network and start moving out tokens. In Nomad’s case, it was much simpler than that. A routine update to the bridge enabled users to forge transactions and make off with millions’ worth of crypto.

    8000 Bitcoins vermist op vuilnisbelt: AI en robothonden moeten ze terugvinden

    James Howells uit Wales probeert al bijna tien jaar toestemming te krijgen om de plaatselijke vuilnisbelt in Newport in Zuid-Wales af te graven. Want daar, zo denkt hij, ligt zijn harde schijf met 8000 Bitcoins. Zijn nieuwste plan: het vuil doorzoeken met robotarmen en de zoektocht beveiligen met robothonden. De gemeente is echter nog steeds niet te vermurwen.

    De vuilnismissie van Howells, een computerengineer, begon in 2013 toen hij bij het opruimen van zijn kantoor per ongeluk een harde schijf weggooide waar alle beveiligingscodes van 8000 Bitcoins op stonden. Bij de huidige koers zouden die vandaag de dag in totaal ergens tussen de 170 en 180 miljoen euro waard zijn.

    Kunstmatige intelligentie
    Howells vroeg de gemeente Newport de afgelopen jaren meerdere keren toestemming om de plaatselijke vuilnisbelt af te grazen. Daar zou de vuilniszak met de waardevolle schijf namelijk gedumpt zijn. Maar de gemeente weigerde hem telkens de toegang: te duur, te veel gedoe, en bovendien schadelijk voor het milieu.

    Nu heeft de 37-jarige Welshman een nieuw plan waarmee hij de gemeente alsnog hoopt te vermurwen. De in totaal 100.000 ton afval moet in gedeeltes worden afgegraven door een grote robotarm. Dat vuil wordt op een aangrenzend stuk grond op een lopende band gegooid, waar andere, speciaal met AI (kunstmatige intelligentie) getrainde robotarmen de kansrijke stukken puin uit de massa filteren.

    Vervolgens wordt deze eerste selectie aan een tweede inspectie onderworpen, door zowel robots als mensen.

    Om eventuele kapers op de kust geen kans te geven, wordt de zoektocht beveiligd door - jawel - robothonden, van het bedrijf Boston Dynamics. Hun hond Spot kun je in de beelden in deze tweet aan het werk zien:

    De onfortuinlijke Howells heeft inmiddels een financier gevonden die bereid is 11 miljoen euro te investeren in de technologie en de programmeurs die nodig zijn voor de zoektocht. Onder de experts die hij wil inhuren zijn ook milieudeskundigen, om de ecologische impact zoveel mogelijk te beperken. Het project zou ongeveer een jaar in beslag nemen.

    Ecologisch risico
    Mocht de harde schijf gevonden worden, dan is het nog allerminst zeker of de data erop nog boven water gehaald kan worden. Zo wel, dan belooft Howell dat een deel van het geld ten goede zal komen aan de gemeenschap van Newport. Zo wil hij een data-mining-centrum opzetten, waarvan de winst naar de gemeenschap gaat. Ook denkt hij aan voorzieningen die groene energie opwekken, zoals windturbines.

    De gemeente lijkt intussen niet geneigd hem zijn zin te geven. "Wij moeten onze taken uitvoeren", zegt een woordvoerder van de gemeente tegen de Britse krant The Guardian, "en een onderdeel daarvan is de ecologische risico's voor de bevolking beheersen. Het voorstel van de heer Howells houdt een aanzienlijk ecologisch risico in, en dat kunnen we met het oog op onze taak niet accepteren."

    Enorm verlies voor MicroStrategy

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) MicroStrategy heeft in het tweede kwartaal een verlies van meer dan een miljard dollar geleden. Dit bleek uit cijfers van het bedrijf dat vooral bekend is om zijn grote bitcoinpositie.

    De omzet bedroeg afgelopen drie maanden 122,1 miljoen dollar. Dat is ruim 3 miljoen dollar minder dan in het tweede kwartaal van 2021.

    Maar het verlies liep op jaarbasis op van 299 miljoen naar bijna 1,1 miljard dollar. Er werd een afschrijving gedaan van 900 miljoen dollar op de bitcoinpositie van het bedrijf.

    Per 30 juni had MicroStrategy 129.699 bitcoins in bezit. Woensdagmiddag kostte een bitcoin 22.812 dollar volgens Coinmarketcap.

    Tegelijk met de kwartaalcijfers kondigde MicroStrategy aan dat Michael Saylor stopt als CEO en doorgaat als voorzitter. Phong Le wordt de opvolger van Saylor als CEO.

    Saylor meent dat deze nieuwe rolverdeling goed is voor het bedrijf, dat enerzijds actief is in bitcoin, maar anderzijds ook een softwarebedrijf is.

    The Solana smart contract project is suffering from issues once again after it was discovered that close to 8,000 Solana-based wallets have been compromised. Solana is asking victimized wallet owners to complete a survey and the team stressed that “engineers are investigating the root cause.”

    Solana Investigates Massive Wallet Exploit, Root Cause of the Hack Is Still Unknown
    After the chain had halted on a few occasions in the past, Solana users are now dealing with an extensive wallet vulnerability that affected specific wallet software such as Phantom and Slope. Solana developers and victims discovered the exploit on Tuesday evening (EST) and the hacker’s method of attack is currently unknown.

    The blockchain security firm Peckshield noted that it’s possible the exploit stemmed from a supply chain attack. Solana Labs co-founder and CEO Anatoly Yakovenko also stated that the exploit likely derived from a supply chain attack.

    “Seems like an iOS supply chain attack. Multiple plausible wallets that only received sol and had no interactions beyond receiving have been affected,” Yakovenko wrote. “Android seems to be affected as well. All the confirmed stories so far have had the key imported or generated on mobile. Most of the reports are Slope, but a few Phantom users as well,” the Solana Labs CEO added.

    Presently, the amount of stolen funds from the hack is also unknown, as the security firm Anchain estimated the hack to be around $5 million, and Peckshield’s estimate was around $8 million. The Solana Status Twitter account explained what the Solana team had discovered so far.

    “Engineers from multiple ecosystems, with the help of several security firms, are investigating drained wallets on Solana. There is no evidence hardware wallets are impacted,” the team said.

    The Solana team also left a survey for victims that asks a number of specific questions like what address was affected by the exploit and what type of wallet the user leveraged. Victims need to detail exactly when they downloaded the wallet and if the wallet was an iOS version, Android version, or Windows, Mac, or browser version.

    One question asks victims if they generated a seed phrase from within the compromised wallet and the survey wants to know where and when the seed phrase was created. The seed phrase question is “required,” according to the Solana hack survey hosted on the Solana Foundation’s website.

    Solana’s recent wallet exploit follows the blockchain’s issues with block production in September 2021 and June 2022. Between those two dates, Solana’s network had to stop block production a total of eight times.

    The exploit this week has damaged solana’s (SOL) market gains and out of the top ten crypto assets, SOL is the only token down in value against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday. SOL is now in the ninth position as well, when it used to be a top-five contender in the crypto economy a few months ago.

    “It is not yet clear at this time whether the attackers exploited a vulnerability in the Phantom wallet or some other hidden weakness in the broader Solana ecosystem,” Mikkel Mørch, the executive director at the digital asset investment fund ARK36 told Bitcoin.com News on Wednesday. “But the hack will definitely cast a shadow over Solana’s credibility as a better alternative to Ethereum – especially when it comes to security. It may even give Ethereum some additional boost from the narrative perspective as the safest and most reliable defi ecosystem,” Mørch added.

    Several solutions can potentially improve cross-border payments significantly and central bank digital currency (CBDC) could be the “holy grail,” according to the European Central Bank (ECB). In a new report, the eurozone’s monetary authority also claims stablecoins, among other options, are “problematic.”

    ‘Holy Grail’ of Cross-Border Payments in Reach Through CBDC, European Central Bank Insists
    Cross-border payments should be immediate, cheap, universal, and settled in a secure medium, the European Central Bank remarks in a recently published report. For the first time, the “holy grail” of such transactions is within reach, thanks to declining data transfer costs, the birth of innovative concepts, and global collaboration aiming to enhance these payments, the regulator says in the recently published paper.

    The review, co-authored by ECB’s Director-General for Market Infrastructure and Payments Ulrich Bindseil and economist George Pantelopoulos, explores various ways to achieve these objectives. The experts have assessed several alternatives that are currently available, including cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, stablecoins, modernized correspondent banking, fintech solutions, and digital currencies issued by central banks, or CBDCs.

    Of these, bitcoin is the “least credible” and hence unlikely to be the “holy grail” of cross-border payments, they say, pointing to three main reasons for their conclusion: an inefficient proof-of-work mechanism, comparative advantages resulting from regulatory gaps that will be closed by authorities as they allegedly undermine anti-money laundering regulations, and the leading crypto’s unsuitability as a means of domestic payment as it’s “inherently unstable” in terms of purchasing power.

    Stablecoins, although they take an intermediate spot, can be even “more problematic” due to the employment of closed-loop solutions, their market power and fragmentation, the report notes. Currency substitution and the threat to monetary sovereignty have been listed as risks, too. Nevertheless, the authors admit they can be efficient as means of payment for several reasons, including their stable value bound to existing fiat currencies and their potential to have universal reach.

    Two other solutions, the European Central Bank insists, combine technical feasibility and relative simplicity while maintaining a competitive and open architecture by avoiding the dominance of a small number of market participants who would eventually exploit their market power. The central bank believes these are:

    The interlinking of domestic instant payment systems and future CBDCs, both with a competitive FX conversion layer, which may have the highest potential to deliver the holy grail for larger cross border payment corridors.

    All reviewed options require that progress is made in the field of AML/CFT compliance. The ECB says this will ensure straight-through-processing for the large majority of cross-border payments. The central bank raises the question whether financial authorities should develop both the interlinking of domestic payment systems and CBDCs, or dismiss one of them and “focus all efforts to implement the holy grail as soon as possible.”

    The European Central Bank has been working on a project to issue a digital version of the common European currency, the euro. Its investigation phase may take another year or so, President Christine Lagarde indicated last month. In an article co-authored with Board Member Fabio Panetta, she also marked key principles of the CBDC’s realization.     BlackRock en Coinbase gaan samenwerken
    Directe toegang tot bitcoin voor institutionele beleggers.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) BlackRock gaat samenwerken met Coinbase om enkele institutionele klanten directe toegang tot bitcoin te bieden. Dit meldden de twee bedrijven donderdag, zonder financiële details bekend te maken.

    Klanten van BlackRock's investeringsbeheerplatform Aladdin krijgen daardoor toegang tot cryptohandel, bewaring, prime brokerage en rapportagemogelijkheden.

    "De afgelopen jaren heeft Coinbase een centrale rol gespeeld bij het ontwikkelen en versterken van cryptomarkten als de veiligste, meest vertrouwde brug naar de crypto-economie. Vandaag is een spannende volgende stap op onze reis", aldus Coinbase.

    "Onze institutionele klanten zijn steeds meer geïnteresseerd in markten voor digitale activa", zei BlackRock in een toelichting.

    Bitcoin noteerde donderdag een procent lager op 23.089 dollar.

    Het aandeel Coinbase steeg liefst 25 procent en BlackRock een half procent.

    Via zijn bedrijf MicroStrategy stak hij miljarden voor vermogende particulieren in de hype, die hij via YouTube tot CNBC met snerpende stem omhoog praatte. Saylor ging all in. Maar zijn gok pakt beroerd uit: woensdag trad de ceo terug. Het aandeel MicroStrategy ging direct 13% omhoog.

    Met de koersstijging van bitcoin tot $69.000 per stuk in november 2021 leek Saylors aanpak succesvol. Het aandeel MicroStrategy verhitte, van $124 de dag voor de aankondiging van de investering naar een record van $1273 op februari 2021. Andere vermogensbeheerders kopieerden zijn strategie. Saylor, geschoold als vliegtuigontwerper, werd steeds radicaler: hij begon te lenen en stak voor $2,4 miljard, en nog eens $1 miljard uit de uitgegeven aandelen, in 130.000 bitcoins. Die zouden als systeem de Amerikaanse dollar overbodig maken, zei Saylor. „Neem al je geld op en steek het in bitcoin”, adviseerde hij zalen vol beleggers. „En verkoop ze nooit meer.”

    De economische afkoeling en de inval in Oekraïne schaafden bitcoin recent tot $17.590 terug. MicroStrategy meldde dinsdag zijn zevende kwartaal op rij met verlies. Saylor werd door zijn bestuur gedegradeerd tot chairman. „Ik ben niet van plan bitcoins te verkopen”, zei hij na ingreep. Saylor lijdt niet echt: privé is hij volgens zakenblad Forbes nog altijd goed zijn voor $1 miljard vermogen.

    Griekenland levert Russische witwascrimineel uit aan VS
    Griekenland heeft de Russische crimineel Alexander Vinnik aan de Verenigde Staten uitgeleverd, een paar uur nadat hij uit een Franse gevangenis was vrijgelaten, zei zijn advocaat vrijdag.

    Vinnik werd in 2017 in Griekenland opgepakt, het land leverde hem vervolgens uit aan Frankrijk, waar hij in 2020 werd veroordeeld voor witwassen. Een paar weken geleden werd zijn celstraf van vijf jaar bekrachtigd door een Parijs hof van beroep. Hij werd donderdag overgedragen aan de Griekse autoriteiten, die hem zonder kans te geven asiel aan te vragen in Griekenland op een privé-vliegtuig naar San Francisco hebben gezet. Volgens Vinniks Franse advocaat hebben de VS flinke druk uitgeoefend om hem uitgeleverd te krijgen.

    In de VS wordt Vinnik op 21 punten aangeklaagd voor het exploiteren van BTC-e, een criminele beurs voor cryptomunten. Volgens het Amerikaanse openbaar ministerie is er op dat platform meer dan 4 miljard dollar (3,9 miljard euro) crimineel geld witgewassen. Als hij veroordeeld wordt op alle 21 aanklachten, kan hij 55 jaar celstraf krijgen.

    Het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft de uitlevering afgekeurd. "We zijn diep verontwaardigd over de onvriendelijke acties van de Griekse autoriteiten. Russische diplomaten zullen alles dat mogelijk is doen om zijn legitieme rechten en belangen te beschermen."

    The Number of Cryptocurrency ATMs Installed Worldwide Surpasses 39,000

    This week the number of cryptocurrency automated teller machines (ATMs) operating worldwide has surpassed the 39,000 mark. Since January 2017 when the count was approaching 1K machines, the number of crypto ATMs has grown by 3,925% since then. Crypto ATM numbers saw exponential growth during the last 23 months since September 1, 2020, when there were less than 10K machines worldwide.
