PS. Mijn belang zit overigens enkel in PostNL :-)

Klopt helemaal Martijn.

    ZONDAG 15 SEPTEMBER 2013, 14:11 uur | 36 keer gelezen

FedEx Corp.'s quarterly earnings rose 6.5% as the shipping company posted an increase in ground-shipping revenue and improved margins.

    Results beat analyst expectations.

FedEx, the world's largest air-cargo shipper by revenue, and its rivals have been wrestling with a shift by clients toward cheaper and slower delivery services, such as ocean freight, driving many air shippers to rework their networks. The downshifting ...

Copy and Paste Bloomberg ( effe wat langer stukje..;-)

FedEx Corp. (FDX) reported first-quarter profit that beat analysts’ estimates as the operator of the world’s largest cargo airline reduced costs to counter a shift among customers to cheaper shipping methods.

Net income in the quarter ended Aug. 31 rose 6.5 percent to $489 million, or $1.53 a share, from $459 million, or $1.45, a year earlier, the Memphis, Tennessee-based company said today in a statement. Analysts projected $1.50 a share, the average of 28 estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales climbed 1.9 percent to $11 billion.

FedEx, regarded as an economic bellwether because of the variety of goods it ships globally, began taking steps last year to reduce costs by $1.7 billion as customers opt for cheaper shipping. The company is parking older planes sooner, trimming capacity to Asia and eliminating 3,600 jobs through buyouts.

“FedEx Express remains focused on reducing costs while facing challenging global economic conditions,” Chief Executive Officer Fred Smith said in the statement.

The company today also reaffirmed its full-year earnings forecast.

FedEx rose 3 percent to $114 at 7:35 a.m. in New York. The shares have advanced 21 percent this year through yesterday, compared with a 20 percent gain for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

“As companies are watching their costs, they’ve become adept at managing around the need for expedited deliveries,” David Vernon, a Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst, said yesterday in an interview. “FedEx already has been doing quite a bit, doing a whole lot of the right things.”

Wat een heerlijk rustig forum is dit... Ik heb het rijk alleen. Weer flutdag voor TNT..? Iemand een idee..? Iemand..?

The European Commission this week explained why EU merger regulations forced it to block UPS’s proposed acquisition of TNT Express.

The takeover would have restricted competition in intra-European express delivery of small packages in 15 member states, reducing the number of significant players to only two or three and sometimes leaving DHL as the only alternative to UPS, the Commission judged. “The concentration would therefore have likely harmed customers by causing price increases,” it said.

The proposed remedy by UPS– it offered to divest TNT’s subsidiaries in the 15 countries concerned, and allow the buyer to access its intra-European air network for five years–proved “inadequate to address the identified competition concerns,” the Commission concluded after carrying out an in-depth assessment and consulting with customers and other interested parties.

Joaquín Almunia, Commission VP in charge of competition policy, said, “Businesses would have been directly harmed by the takeover of TNT by UPS because it would have drastically reduced choice between providers and probably led to price increases. We worked hard with UPS on possible remedies until very late in the procedure, but what they offered was simply not enough to address the serious competition problems we identified.”

The problem in the Commission’s eyes was that, of the four integrators that combine air services and ground delivery networks for small packages, FedEx has too small a market share in several countries to exercise a significant competitive constraint on UPS and TNT. “Other market players, such as national postal operators, can only compete to a limited extent because they do not reach comparable efficiency or reliability, given their heavy reliance on road rather than air transport,” it said.

The Commission had indicated two weeks earlier that this would be its decision. UPS waited for the official verdict before formally withdrawing its offer for TNT on Jan. 30.
