Zaporizhstal Develops 8 New Steel Products in 2020

Ukraine based Zaporizhstal has mastered the production of eight new types of hot rolled and cold rolled steel in 2020. Zaporizhstal General Director Mr Alexander Mironenko said “In 2020, we focused on the discipline of fulfilling orders and improving work with customers, according to which the main focus is to improve product quality and manufacture new types, at the request of the consumer. In 2021, we will not stop at what has been achieved. Zaporizhstal plans to master the production of seven more new types of products.”

In 2020, the plant continued to improve the quality characteristics of the mastered DX51D cold rolled coils for galvanizing at Unisteel, as well as roll formed sections. The mill has mastered the production of DC01 cold rolled coils for the Marcegaglia group in full compliance with the requirements of European quality standards.

In total, in 2020 Zaporizhstal shipped 20 thousand tons of new products. It is expected that Zaporizhstal rolled products will be used in the construction industry, mechanical engineering, and the household sector.

Zaporizhstal is Ukraine's fourth largest steel maker with an annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of steel, 3.3 million tonnes of pig iron, and 4.1 million of finished steel products. Zaporizhstal is located in the city of Zaporizhzhia. The company was founded in 1933.

Coimbatore Engineering Units to from Steel Buying Group

Times of India reported that Coimbatore based associations of engineering industries have decided to form a consortium to purchase raw materials directly from manufacturers like SAIL and Vizag Steel to minimize the impact of price rice and meet the growing demand. Coimbatore District Small Industries Association president Mr MV Ramesh Babu said “Usually, the price of raw materials remains stable without many fluctuations for two to three months. So, we could afford to manufacture and handover the products for the quoted price. But now the raw materials price changes every few hours. With the fluctuation, it is difficult to manufacture a product for the quoted price, because by the time we fix an order and purchase raw materials, the price would increase. To become less dependent on traders, they would form a consortium to procure raw materials from SAIL to be distributed among the member industries. We will place orders after obtaining requirement details from the member industries. SAIL wants us to make a minimum purchase of 400 tonnes, which is huge.”

Mr Babu said they would also request the government to suspend import and antidumping duties on raw materials, and stall export for at least three months, so that availability of raw materials in the country would increase and price would drop automatically.

He added "If the issue is not sorted out within 15 to 20 days, it will become unmanageable. Some foundries have already stopped production and it has started to affect engineering industries.”

Tri-D & Marubeni Itochu Steel to Digitize Pipelines

California based smart pipe innovator Tri-D Dynamics Inc and Japan based global steel distributor Marubeni Itochu Steel Inc have signed an agreement to develop smart pipelines that bring the benefits of digitally-connected infrastructure to the energy industry. Under the agreement, Tri-D will provide design and advanced manufacturing IP to integrate sensors and electronic components into MISI pipelines used in oil and gas production, in a market with over 14 million tonnes of demand in 2019.

Tri-D Dynamics Inc and Marubeni Itochu Steel Inc plan to develop smart pipes that will integrate sensors and electronics to enable digital supply chain tracking and bring the benefits of digitally connected infrastructure to the energy industry. Embedded sensors and electronics will enable digital tracking of the pipes, called Oil Country Tubular Goods, or OCTG, over their lifecycle from fabrication at the mill to transportation, storage and incorporation into the wellbore. The partnership will provide Exploration and Production customers with increased accuracy, reliability, transparency and efficiency for one of the most critical pieces of well infrastructure.

Tri-D's electronic tracking technology will be used in casings, lengths of pipe that are inserted into an oil or gas well to prevent the potentially disastrous effects of hydrocarbons leaking into the environment. The ability to fully trace how each segment of pipe was created, stored, transported and handled is imperative to maintaining quality and integrity in the well and ensuring safety. MISI plans to pair Tri-D's automated digital tracking feature with the security and transparency of blockchain data management to help digitize and track more than 1M metric tons of OCTG products MISI sells globally every year.

Scania Gas Powered Mining Truck in Gerdau Iron Mines in Itabirito

Brazilian steel group Gerdau has started using gas-powered mining truck in Brazil. The Scania truck will work in the operations of the steel producer at the Varzea do Lopes mine, located in Itabirito, Minas Gerais, operated by contractor Fagundes Construcao e Mineracao SA, with the support of Scania WLM Itaipu. The first gas-powered truck in Brazil is a Scania G 410 6×4 model. Fagundes drivers will undergo specific training to operate the equipment, which will transport iron ore and waste. Gerdau says it has been working, in partnership with its supply chain, to build a more sustainable future, based on the development of innovative products and solutions.

The supply of vehicular natural gas, which is the responsibility of Logas, will be within the operation itself in the form of a compact station that is being built by the steel producer in accordance with legal and safety standards for the storage, consumption and use of gas. The duration of the filling time is short, about 15 minutes, which does not compromise the availability of the truck in daily work, which is intense, since it will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The expectation is that there will be a consumption of 10 cubic metres/hour, which in this operation means a range of between 250 and 300 km.

The Scania heavy trucks powered by CNG, LNG and/or biomethane have Otto cycle engines (the same concept as in cars) and are 100% powered by any mixture of fuels.

Germany Backs Green Hydrogen Pilot in Saudi Arabia Future City

erman state has handed over 1.5 million euro grant to steelmaker Thyssenkrupp’s Uhde Chlorine Engineers’ unit for the development of a prototype of a 20MW alkaline electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia in Saudi Arabia. The grant is part of Germany’s national hydrogen strategy that seeks to source green hydrogen from abroad given Germany’s limited space for domestic hydrogen production from renewables. Germany under the scheme earlier this month had handed out a first grant for a synthetic fuel project in Chile.

The Thyssenkrupp unit in a first phase dubbed ‘Element One’ is slated to develop the electrolyser for a hydrogen innovation and development centre in the model region of Neom at the Red Sea, where Saudi Arabia is building as a futuristic high tech city and region. Neom among other things will host massive green hydrogen and renewables projects to make the desert Kingdom less dependent on oil. Yet to be built solar and wind power arrays in a second phase are slated to feed an industrial scale electrolyser plant at Neom to produce up to 650 tonnes of green hydrogen and 3,000 tons of ammonia per day by 2025. Once completed, Helios plant will be one of the world’s largest green hydrogen production facilities. The ammonia, which is easier to store and transport than gaseous hydrogen, will be shipped overseas for reconverting to hydrogen for use as an alternative fuel in transportation.

Neom, a combination of the Greek neos, new, and the first letter of the Arabic word for future, mustaqbal is planned to be a luxury city 33 times the size of New York, with flying cars and taxis, robot servants, holographic teachers, artificial rain, and a giant artificial moon. The development, which will sprawl over 26,500 square kilometers near the Red Sea, was initiated by the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as part his Vision 2030 project. Helios also involves Saudi firm ACWA Power, Air Products & Chemicals and Danish chemical catalysis producer Haldor Topsoe.

India Finalizes Production Linked Incentive for Special Steels

CNBC TV18 reported that India’s steel ministry has finalised a plan for specialty steel manufacturing under the Production Linked Incentive scheme. The ministry has proposed a three incentive slab of 3%, 6% and 9%. The PLI per company will be subject to a ceiling of INR 200 crore and the outlay for specialty steel is marked INR 6,322 crore for the five year period.

The highest rate of a 9% incentive will be made available for commencing production of steel products that are entirely being imported into the country, like pipes and tubes for the oil and gas industry and head-hardened steel rails.

The second incentive level of 6% will be offered for achieving incremental domestic production of electro-galvanized steel and tin-coated steel products and with the potential of achieving export capabilities within the period of the next five years.

The third level of incentive of three percent will be available for incremental production of aluminium-zinc coated steel and heat-treated hot rolled coils.

Producers of rebars, stainless steel and alloy steel products have also approached the government to be made eligible for the PLI, but the ministry is yet to take a decision on creating incentive levels for this segment.

Indian government has approved INR 1.45 lakh crore plans in November under the PLI for 10 sectors for a period of five years to augment domestic manufacturing and enhance export capabilities. The 10 sectors include Pharmaceuticals, Telecom, Automobile, Textile, food processing, solar, white goods, specialty steel amongst others.

US Steel Kosice Worst Polluter in Slovakia - Report

Buongiorno Slovacchia reported that 70% of Slovaks express concern about the state of the environment. According to a survey conducted by researchers from the Sociology Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the majority of Slovaks 55% think that environmental protection should be more important than economic growth and even maintaining employment. Environmental pollution in Slovakia is mainly due to large industrial companies. The '85% of emissions total carbon monoxide come from industrial enterprises, against a 7.7% generated by companies that produce concrete, and 2.6% and 1.2% are caused by the energy and mining sector by construction companies.

An analysis by the Research Institute on Social and Economic Risks released in recent days notes that the worst polluter in the country is the large US Steel Kosice, with over 65,000 tons of carbon monoxide emissions in 2019. Four times more than Slovalco, aluminium producer of Ziar nad Hronom, the second company on the list, and twenty-five times the third, the Cenmac cement group.

On the other hand, US Steel Kosice is also the primary emitter of another pollutant, nitric oxide. Last year it emitted more than 2,800 tons, compared with 2.2.00 tons by the gravel sand producer CRH and 1.200 tons by the country's main electricity company, Slovenske Elektrarne.

Thanks also to the presence of the steel mill, the Kosice region is the most polluted area in Slovakia, while the Trnava region is the least polluted.

Punjab User Industry Seeks Ban of Steel Export for 6 Months

Indian Express reported that Punjab industry, in video conference meeting with Finance Minister Ms Nirmala Sitharaman and an in-person meeting on Saturday with Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Mr Som Prakash, has asked the Centre to ban the export of steel for at least six months. Punjab’s Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings President Mr Upkar Singh said “Steel is one of the prominent raw materials for the engineering industry. It is processed and after value addition, sold as finished products to automotive, tractor manufacturing, hand tool companies etc. It is an important component in the bicycle industry as well. Rise in demand of steel, low production of steel due to Covid restrictions, increase in export of steel and cartelisation by steel companies are cited as main reasons for price hikes.”

CICU General Secretary Mr Pankaj Sharma said “Media reports indicate that large steel rolling mills prefer to export steel. They have booked orders for Europe, Middle East etc, which is one reason for shortage of steel in India. Thus companies are increasing prices at their will. Cost of steel prices is adding to cost of MSMEs and hence they will run into losses. MSMEs will not be able to book orders considering current raw material prices and a number of MSMEs will be forced to close due to these increase prices of basic raw material.”

CICU said that export of steel should be banned for six months and there be no import duty on steel. Maximum incentive should be given under the stimulus package announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to MSME, cartelisation should be controlled and betting & speculation in steel must be curbed by the government.

China to Impose Steel Scrap Import Standards from January

China Iron and Steel Industry Association announced that China will implement its national standard on recycling iron and steel materials on January 1 2021. The standard specifies the definition, classification, technical requirements, inspection methods and acceptance rules for recycling iron and steel materials. It will provide standard technical support to ensure the import of high-quality recycled steel resources. Meanwhile, the standard has strict requirements regarding environmental protection. Compared with using iron ore, steelmaking with recycled iron and steel materials can greatly reduce pollutant emissions

CISA deputy chief Jiang Wei said “The standard will facilitate the green transformation and healthy development of the steel industry, as it allows steel companies more raw-material options, while limiting the use of iron ore and its price increase to some extent. The industry will be able to exploit more recycled raw materials, both at home and abroad, and better recycle and utilize resources after the standard is implemented.
