Arcadis Ost 1 Monopile Foundation Contract Awarded to Steelwind

In the presence of Lower Saxony’s Minister for Environment and Energy, Olaf Lies, Parkwind and Steelwind have signed a contract for the fabrication of the monopile foundations for the Arcadis Ost 1 offshore wind farm on July 3rd, at Steelwind HQ in Nordenham in Germany. This signature follows the recently announced OSS contract with Bladt and further secures Parkwind’s planning for the project. As one of the key market players in monopile fabrication, Steelwind will deliver 27 WTG and one OSS next generation XXL-Monopile units.

The monopile production starts 2021. Europe's leading producer of heavy plate Dillinger will supply the heavy steel plates for the monopiles.

The Arcadis Ost 1 wind farm has a capacity of about 247 MW and is located in the Baltic Sea, northeast of the island of Rügen, within the 12-nautical mile zone of the Federal State Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. In April 2018, Parkwind was successful in the offshore wind auction in Germany, launched by the Federal Grid Agency.

Steelwind Nordenham GmbH, a Dillinger Group company, has been manufacturing monopiles and transition pieces in Nordenham since 2015, and now also produces “single-piece” monopile foundations with unit weights of up to 2,400 metric tons. The single-piece monopile foundation replaces the previous design with a separate monopile and transition piece by integrating certain parts of the transition piece into the monopile. The monopile can then be up to 120 meters long. The steel for the foundations comes from Dillinger – the European heavy plate market leader located in Saarland.

TU Graz Physicists Study Steel Behaviour on Board ISS

For many years, the Institute of Experimental Physics at Graz University of Technology in Styria in Austria and the Styrian industrial company Böhler Edelstahl have been conducting joint research on the surface tension and temperature dependence of different types of steel. Steel in particular is the focus of interest here, because it will be needed in metallic laser 3-D printing to produce steel components using this new remelting technology in the future. Conventional examination methods only work up to a certain upper temperature limit. At higher temperatures, problems can occur with the sample container, such as interactions between the container and the sample, and this would falsify the measuring results. This is why physicist Gernot Pottlacher and his research group use the method of levitation, which is used to study such materials. Mr Pottlacher said "This data is of great importance for both science and industry. It demonstrates how the material behaves when it is heated and cooled, that is, how it changes from the solid to the liquid phase and back again. We let the samples hover electromagnetically or electrostatically and thus avoid contact with the sample container. On Earth, gravity is not an insignificant component altogether, influencing the measuring results, but in space, this influence vanishes, allowing more accurate measurements to be made.”

For the experiments, the Styrian team works together with Japanese and American researchers and uses the Electrostatic Levitation Furnacet. ELF is an experimental setup of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA in the Japanese experiment module Kibo at the International Space Station. The sample is fed into the experimental unit and positioned accordingly. A laser then heats and melts the floating steel sample. Subsequently, various sensors measure the density, surface tension and viscosity of the molten material. When the material cools down again, the researchers can observe and measure this process closely, too. The experiment is controlled from Earth, where G Pottlacher and his team follow the event live while the data obtained is passed on directly via downlink.

The L331 ELF experiment is a collaboration of various researchers and research institutions, in which in addition to the working group at Graz University of Technology, the following scientists are involved: Douglas Matson of Tufts University, Robert W Hyers of University of Massachusetts, Michael P Sansoucie of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Hirohisa Oda of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Jannatun Nawer of Tufts University, Hideki Saruwatari of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Chihiro Koyama of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Wolfgang Schützenhöfer of voestalpine BÖHLER Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG and Siegfried Kleber of BÖHLER Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG.

Kobe Steel, Vale & Mitsui to Collaborate in Low CO2 Iron Making

Kobe Steel Ltd, together with its wholly owned US subsidiary Midrex Technologies Inc, has reached a non-binding agreement with Vale SA, the world’s largest iron ore producer and Mitsui & Co Ltd to collaborate in providing low CO2 iron metallics and ironmaking solutions to the world's steel industry. The MIDREXK Process is the world’s leading direct reduction ironmaking technology, with MIDREX Plants producing more than 60% of the world’s direct reduced iron. Because the MIDREX Process uses natural gas or gas derived from coal to reduce iron ore for use in steelmaking, its CO2 emission level is lower than the blast furnace route. Kobe Steel considers that the MIDREX Process will play an important role in promoting this initiative.

Kobe Steel is contributing to reducing CO2 emissions through various products, such as high tensile strength steel sheets for automotive weight reduction. However, as the CO2 emissions arising from the steel manufacturing process are also an issue from the standpoint of climate change, there is a growing need worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions in the steel industry.

SMS Group Commissions Revamped Slab Caster at ArcelorMittal Asturias

SMS group has successfully put back into service the two-strand slab caster No 2 at ArcelorMittal Asturias in Avilés in Spain, after completion of a comprehensive revamp. Thanks to the revamp carried out by SMS group, the continuous caster is now able to produce slabs with thicknesses of 235, 300 and 365 millimeters, 235 and 280 mm before the modification, and widths of 800 up to 2,200 millimeters, up to 1,600 millimeters before the modification. The caster is designed for an annual production capacity of up to 2.9 million tons of steel slabs.

Just one month after the 14-week revamping period, the continuous caster had been ramped up to a daily production rate of over 100,000 tons of steel slabs. From the curved mold down to the runout section, the continuous caster has been completely rebuilt. Its metallurgical length has been increased from 33.2 to 36.7 meters. The modernized caster is designed for a maximum casting speed of 1.6 meters per minute.

The slab caster has been fitted with the X-Pact Width Control system. This enables the width to be adjusted and the mold taper adapted automatically during production, without having to reduce the casting speed. In the process, the system takes into account the steel grade cast and the current casting speed. The original mechanical oscillator has been replaced with a hydraulic oscillation system, which enables the stroke length and the frequency to be modified during the casting process.

The straightening segments and the segments in the horizontal section have been equipped with an online gap control system with position-controlled clamping cylinders.

The new No 2 continuous slab caster operates with various X-Pact Level 2 process models for enhanced quality control. X-Pact Tech Assist monitors the temperature distribution in the strand shell. In this way, stickers can be detected and the risk of break-outs eliminated early in the process. In conjunction with the Dynamic Soft Reduction process model, X-Pact® Gap Control enables the slab to be specifically compressed in the final solidification zone to improve the internal microstructure.

The cooling circuits for the mold, the casting machine and the spray cooling system have been completely renewed; the hydraulic equipment has been adapted and extended.
