European stock markets erased gains and headed south in afternoon action on Thursday, after the European Central Bank cut its growth outlook for the euro zone in 2013.
Both the ECB and the Bank of England left interest rates on hold as expected.
The Stoxx Europe 600 index lost 0.4% to 294.04, putting it on track to close at the lowest level since late April.
Trading in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Lisbon opened an hour later than usual due to a technical glitch.
Banks posted some of the biggest losses, with Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA down 5.4%, National Bank of Greece SA 5.1% lower and Unione di Banche Italiane SCpA off 3.3%.
    ECB cuts growth forecast
The pan-European benchmark had kicked the day off on an upbeat note, but was sent lower in the afternoon after ECB President Mario Draghi addressed the euro-zone economy at his monthly news conference. He said ECB staff cuts its forecast for 2013 to a 0.6% fall in gross domestic product versus a March forecast of a 0.5% contraction. The staff, however, lifted the 2014 forecast to 1.1% from 1%.
The projections came after the ECB left its key lending rate unchanged at a record low 0.5% and made no changes to the deposit rate, as was expected by most analysts.
"I think that investors probably felt that if the ECB is more pessimistic on growth, then it ought to be employing its big monetary guns. Draghi talked about them, but now isn't following through," said Guy Foster, head of portfolio strategy at Brewin Dolphin, in emailed comments.
"We weren't surprised that Draghi left the deposit rate on hold. After the phenomenal success of his 'whatever-it-takes' speech he's trying to repeat the trick by maintaining the threat of policy stimulus without actually deploying it. It's not working now though," he added. "It's easy to see how the market would want more after the German factory orders were so disappointing this morning."
German manufacturing orders dropped 2.3% in April month-on-month, falling short of analyst expectations of a 0.9% decline.
The Bank of England left interest rates at a record low of 0.5%, and kept its asset-buying plan, the centerpiece of its quantitative-easing strategy, at 375 billion pounds ($579 billion).
In the U.S., stocks opened higher on Wall Street. Data showed the number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 346,000.
    Movers
Germany's DAX 30 index lost 0.2% to 8,181.08, with Commerzbank AG 1.3% lower and Deutsche Bank AG off 0.5%.
Shares of SAP AG added 0.7%, after the software firm said it agreed to buy Swiss maker of online logistics-management software Hybris in a deal reportedly valued at more than $1 billion.
The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index gained 0.5% to 6,388.69. Barclays PLC (BCS) dropped 2.9% and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC (RBS) fell 1.9%. RSA Insurance Group PLC added 1.9% after Morgan Stanley lifted the firm to overweight from underweight.
Shares of Johnson Matthey PLC jumped 6%, after the chemicals firm raised its full-year dividend and said it is confident about the medium to long term. Additionally, Bank of America Merrill Lynch lifted the firm to buy from neutral.
    France's CAC 40 index dropped 0.1% to 3,848.42.
Shares of Electricite de France SA added 2% after HSBC lifted the firm to overweight from neutral, citing an improving outlook and better tariff visibility.
Outside the major indexes, Royal Philips NV climbed 0.9%, after Barclays lifted the electronics giant to overweight from equal weight.
