    GWEC Launches Task Force to Drive Global Growth of Floating Offshore Wind

    The Global Wind Energy Council has announced the formation of a Floating Offshore Wind Task Force with participation of key global industry players and associations to drive global growth of floating offshore wind. The Floating Offshore Wind Task Force will be chaired by GWEC Global Offshore Wind Ambassador and industry pioneer Henrik Stiesdal, and Vice-Chaired by Maf Smith, floating offshore wind expert and former Deputy CEO of RenewableUK. Members of the Task Force consist of leading stakeholders in the floating offshore wind sector, including: Equinor, GE Renewable Energy, Iberdrola, Ideol, the Japanese Wind Power Association, MHI Vestas, Ørsted, Principle Power, RenewableUK, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Shell, Stiesdal, wpd, and The World Bank Group.

    The first actions of the Task Force will be to define the priority markets for offshore wind, and engage with the relevant local associations, policymakers and NGOs in the fishing, marine mammals and ports sectors through a sequence of conferences, seminars and workshops to promote and educate stakeholders about the floating offshore sector and to share best practices.

    Floating offshore wind is a significant market opportunity, and can increase offshore wind resource by tenfold by opening new markets where fixed-bottom offshore wind would not be possible. As of the end of 2019, 65.7 megawatts of floating offshore wind capacity was installed globally, in the UK, Japan, Portugal, Norway and France. According to GWEC Market Intelligence forecasts, 6.2 gigawatts of floating offshore wind is likely to be built by 2030 given the current project pipeline. However, this forecast could be increased to up to 19 gigawatts if cost reduction is accelerated.

    Arcadis Ost 1 Monopile Foundation Contract Awarded to Steelwind

    In the presence of Lower Saxony’s Minister for Environment and Energy, Olaf Lies, Parkwind and Steelwind have signed a contract for the fabrication of the monopile foundations for the Arcadis Ost 1 offshore wind farm on July 3rd, at Steelwind HQ in Nordenham in Germany. This signature follows the recently announced OSS contract with Bladt and further secures Parkwind’s planning for the project. As one of the key market players in monopile fabrication, Steelwind will deliver 27 WTG and one OSS next generation XXL-Monopile units.

    The monopile production starts 2021. Europe's leading producer of heavy plate Dillinger will supply the heavy steel plates for the monopiles.

    The Arcadis Ost 1 wind farm has a capacity of about 247 MW and is located in the Baltic Sea, northeast of the island of Rügen, within the 12-nautical mile zone of the Federal State Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. In April 2018, Parkwind was successful in the offshore wind auction in Germany, launched by the Federal Grid Agency.

    Steelwind Nordenham GmbH, a Dillinger Group company, has been manufacturing monopiles and transition pieces in Nordenham since 2015, and now also produces “single-piece” monopile foundations with unit weights of up to 2,400 metric tons. The single-piece monopile foundation replaces the previous design with a separate monopile and transition piece by integrating certain parts of the transition piece into the monopile. The monopile can then be up to 120 meters long. The steel for the foundations comes from Dillinger – the European heavy plate market leader located in Saarland.

    RWE Chooses GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions & Sembcorp Marine for Sofia Offshore Wind Farm Electrical Transmission System

    RWE has moved a step closer to the realisation of its 1.4 gigawatt Sofia Offshore Wind Farm with the selection of the preferred suppliers for the project’s high voltage direct current transmission system. A specially formed consortium of GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions and Sembcorp Marine is set to supply the state-of-the-art system for Sofia, one of the world’s largest offshore wind farm projects, located on Dogger Bank, the shallow area of the central North Sea, 195 kilometres from the UK coast’s nearest point. As the consortium leader, GE’s Grid Solutions will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of two HVDC converter stations capable of transmitting 1,400 megawatts of power at 320 kilovolts. Innovative converter modules and a new high-tech control system have been deployed for Sofia. It will be the most powerful offshore converter station ever fabricated and will be installed at a point 220 kilometres from shore, so will also be the most remote.

    The offshore converter platform will be built and installed by Sembcorp Marine. At the heart of the wind farm, it will comprise 10,000 tonnes topside attached to a jacket foundation piled into the seabed. The onshore converter station will convert the electricity generated by the wind farm to 400 kV, before it enters the national grid.

    GE’s Grid Solutions and Sembcorp Marine are starting early design works in July, with the full contract subject to the project’s final investment decision, due in the first quarter of 2021. The HVDC transmission system represents Sofia’s second largest contract and will include the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the offshore converter platform and the onshore converter station, including all ancillary equipment.

    Construction of the wind farm is due to begin onshore at its Teesside converter station site early next year, with offshore construction expected to get underway in 2023. The HVDC transmission system news follows the announcement that Sofia has signed a preferred supplier agreement with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for 100 of its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines, a 14MW design that is 25 percent more powerful than its next largest model.

    With an installed capacity of more than 9.5 GW RWE is UK's second largest generator of electricity. Via its subsidiary, RWE Renewables, the company has significant experience in the British offshore market with nine wind farms in operation off the UK coast and Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm 857 MW currently under construction. Further offshore development projects, like Sofia, 100% owned by RWE, underline the growth ambitions of the company in this country.

    Turkije bouwt keihard verder aan eerste nucleaire centrale

    De bouw van de eerste nucleaire centrale van Turkije, het grootste project van het land, ligt op schema.
    Verwacht wordt dat de grote en modernste energiecentrale in 2023 in gebruik wordt genomen.

    Dat zei de Turkse minister van Energie Fatih Dönmez tijdens een inspectie van de bouw.

    De bouw van de cruciale veiligheidsbarrière, de zogeheten ‘core catcher’, is grotendeels voltooid, liet Dönmez weten. “Deze moderne unit verhoogt de veiligheid.”

    Aan de bouw werken nu 1.500 mensen, benadrukte de Turkse minister. “Aan het eind van dit jaar worden dat er 4.500. In de toekomst zal dit tijdens de tijdsduur van het project opgeschaald worden naar 10.000. Al het bouwmateriaal komt uit Turkije.”

    Turkije opent Europa’s grootste stuwdam en waterkrachtcentrale

    In de Turkse stad Siirt is zondag een grote stuwdam en waterkrachtcentrale in gebruik genomen. De waterdam genaamd Çetin is de grootste van Europa die van gewalst beton (RCC) is gebouwd, is verklaard.

    De Turkse president Recep Tayyip Erdogan woonde de openingsceremonie via videoconferentie bij. Hij zei dat het over is met de gedachte “dat water stroomt en de Turk enkel toekijkt [Su akar, Türk bakar]” en tegenwoordig “het water stroomt en de Turk [als gevolg daarvan] bouwt en de klus klaart [Su akar, Türk yapar]”.



    Bouwgigant Limak klaarde de enorme klus van 600 miljoen dollar in 2,5 jaar. De 165 meter hoge stuwdam van rolbeton tussen de districten Sirvan en Pervari in Siirt kent een volume van 4,8 miljoen kubieke meter. De waterkrachtcentrale heeft een capaciteit van 420 megawatt.

    De centrale zal op volle capaciteit jaarlijks 1,5 miljard kilowattuur elektriciteit produceren. Dat zorgt voor een economische bijdrage van 100 miljoen euro per jaar.

    Approval of Shetland Transmission Link Unlocks GBP 1 Billion of Investment

    SSE plc has welcomed decision by Ofgem to approve the 600 megawatt HVDC transmission link connecting Shetland to the GB mainland. The link, being taken forward by SSE’s transmission business, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission, will facilitate the connection of renewable electricity developments on Shetland, including SSE Renewables’ 443 megawatt Viking wind farm which reached a final investment decision in June 2020. The link will also support Shetland’s future security of supply needs and will connect Shetland to the main GB electricity system for the first time and represents a material cost saving for consumers.

    Approval is conditional on Ofgem being satisfied, by the end of 2020, that Viking wind farm is likely to go ahead. SSE Renewables is engaging with Ofgem to provide satisfactory evidence as set out in the needs case consultation.

    These investments in renewables and electricity networks form part of SSE’s GBP 7.5 billion low carbon investment programme over the next 5 years which it announced in June. With all necessary regulatory and planning approvals now in place, construction of the subsea link, all associated onshore transmission infrastructure and Viking wind farm will scale up in the coming weeks, providing an immediate boost to the green recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and supporting the UK and Scotland’s commitments to net zero emissions by 2050 and 2045 respectively.

    Fugro aan de slag voor Britse kust

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Fugro is begonnen met bodemonderzoek voor een windmolenpark voor de Britse kust. Dat maakte de bodemonderzoeker dinsdagmiddag bekend.

    Het betreft een opdracht van Scottish Power Renewables met een waarde van ongeveer 55 miljoen Britse pond. "Een significant en uitdagend project", aldus de bodemonderzoeker.

    De werkzaamheden zullen eind 2021 klaar moeten zijn.

    Uiteindelijk moet er een windmolenpark komen met 263 windmolens en een capaciteit van 3,1 Gigawatt, goed voor 2,7 miljoen huishoudens.

    Shell en Eneco bouwen weer een subsidieloos windpark in Noordzee

    DEN HAAG (AFN) - Shell en Eneco gaan samen het derde subsidieloze windpark in de Nederlandse Noordzee aanleggen en exploiteren. Dankzij de komst van dit park kan windenergie op zee in 2023 voorzien in ongeveer 16 procent van de totale Nederlandse elektriciteitsvraag. Daarmee wordt het doel voor windenergie op zee uit het Energieakkoord naar verwachting binnen het budget en de planning behaald, meldt de Nederlandse overheid.

    Het windpark komt op 18,5 kilometer van de kust bij Egmond aan Zee te staan en gaat in totaal 759 megawatt aan vermogen leveren. Dit is genoeg om meer dan 1 miljoen huishoudens van groene stroom te voorzien. CrossWind, zoals het consortium van Shell en Eneco heet, zullen 69 windturbines plaatsen. Het merendeel van de molens, met rotordiameters van wel 200 meter, bevindt zich straks op meer dan 1 kilometer afstand van elkaar.

    De bedrijven zijn al langer actief met windparken op zee. Het samenwerkingsverband Blauwwind, waar de twee ook bij betrokken zijn, kreeg in 2016 bijvoorbeeld de vergunning om aan de slag te gaan op kavels in het windenergiegebied Borssele. Dat windpark is nu in aanbouw. Hoeveel geld er met de projecten is gemoeid, is nu niet naar buiten gebracht.

    De komende jaren worden nog meer windparken op zee afgerond en zal de hoeveelheid elektriciteit die zij leveren sterk toenemen. Volgens het ministerie van Economische Zaken bedraagt het totale vermogen van windparken op zee nu ongeveer 1 gigawatt. Aan het einde van het jaar zal dit bijna 2,5 keer zoveel zijn en 2023 moet dit vermogen toenemen tot 4,7 gigawatt. In 2030 zal het totale vermogen verder oplopen tot 11 gigawatt. Dat is zo’n 40 procent van de totale Nederlandse elektriciteitsvraag.

    piek netwerkopvang.

    Tot nu toe is het zo dat elektriciteitsbedrijven 2x de benodigde elektriciteit opwekken om een piekvraag makkelijk te kunnen opvangen. We hebben dus twee centrales vol werken, terwijl er maar stroom afgenomen wordt van één.
    Je zou denken dat iedereen dan inziet dat dit nogal verspillend is.
    Maar nee.
    Zo is het al 100 jaar, dus daar doen we vanuit de sector niets aan.

    Saipem Bags 3 Offshore Wind Contracts

    Saipem has been awarded new offshore wind contracts, for projects currently under development off the coasts of England, Scotland and France, for a total value of over 90 million euros. Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Farms, a joint venture between Equinor and SSE Renewables, has awarded a contract to Saipem for the transportation and installation of two offshore High Voltage Direct Current platforms for the first two phases of the Dogger Bank project: Dogger Bank A and Dogger Bank B. Both platforms will have a capacity of 1.2 GW and will consist of a ca. 2,900-ton jacket and a ca. 8,500-ton topside. Dogger Bank will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm when completed and is located over 130km off the North East coast of England. The project is the first to use HVDC technology in the UK’s offshore wind market.

    Saipem has also been awarded an installation contract by Seaway 7 related to the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm, a 1,075MW joint venture project between SSE Renewables (49%) and Total (51%) off the East coast of Scotland. The scope of work entails the installation of 114 foundations for an equivalent number of wind turbines.

    Lastly, Saipem has been awarded a contract for the transportation and installation of the jacket and topside of the offshore substation at St-Brieuc offshore wind farm, located in Brittany, France, which is being developed by Ailes Marines, part of the Iberdrola group. All project management and engineering activities shall be executed by Saipem SA, Saipem’s French subsidiary established in Paris.

    These offshore installation projects will be carried out by the crane vessel Saipem 7000.

    Van Oord Bags Contract to Construct Hollandse Kust (noord) Offshore Wind Farm

    Following the announcement that CrossWind received the permit for the Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore wind farm, Van Oord is pleased to confirm that it has been contracted for the Balance of Plant scope. CrossWind is a joint venture between Shell and Eneco. As Balance of Plant contractor, Van Oord’s activities encompass the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the foundations; inter array cables and transportation and installation of the wind turbines. Van Oord will deploy its offshore installation vessels Aeolus, MPI Adventure and MPI Resolution and cable-laying vessel Nexus.

    Offshore wind is essential in achieving the energy transition in the Netherlands. In the 2030 Roadmap for offshore wind energy, the Dutch government states that more than 11 gigawatts of offshore wind farms will be built and connected to the mainland by 2030. Over the past years, Van Oord has played an important role in the development and construction of several Dutch offshore wind farms, such as Gemini Offshore Wind Park and offshore wind farm Borssele III & IV and site V. Hollandse Kust (noord) will have an installed capacity of 759 MW, generating at least 3.3 TWh per year. This is enough renewable power to supply more than 1 million Dutch households with green electricity. CrossWind plans to have the wind farm operational by 2023.

    MHI Vestas Confirms Full Power at Floating Wind Project in Continental Europe

    MHI Vestas Offshore Wind confirmed that the final of three V164 8.4 MW turbines is now generating power to the Portuguese grid. The third and final V164-8.4 MW turbine installed on Principle Power’s semi-submersible WindFloat floating platform has now completed testing at the WindFloat Atlantic project site, and is generating clean, renewable wind power to the Portuguese grid. The three V164-8.4 MW turbines are the largest commercially-operating wind turbines installed offshore on floating platforms anywhere in the world.

    The project site is located 20 km off the coast of Viana do Castelo in Portugal at a sea depth of 100 meters. The WindFloat Atlantic project has been developed by the Windplus consortium, made up of EDP Renewables, Engie, Repsol and Principle Power.

    WindFloat Atlantic is the first floating offshore wind farm in continental Europe, and will deliver an installed capacity of 25 MW, enough to deliver clean electricity equivalent to the amount used by 60,000 consumers in one year.

    MHI Vestas has also been selected as preferred supplier for the “Eoliennes flottantes du golfe du lion” project, being developed by a consortium including WindFloat Atlantic partners EDP Renewables and Engie. The EFGL project is anticipated to utilise three V164-10.0 MW turbines, also sitting atop Principle Power’s WindFloat platform.

    East Anglia Reaches Major Milestone with Windfarm Completion

    East Anglia has cemented its position as a major centre for renewable energy with the completion of the East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm, an incredible achievement, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. All 102 Siemens Gamesa offshore wind turbines – situated 43km off the Suffolk coast are now fully operational, with the capacity to produce 714MW of clean energy. Each year, the park will produce enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of more than 630,000 homes. Around 20 per cent of the turbine installation and around half the turbine connection work was completed during lockdown, with ScottishPower Renewables and its project partners transforming how they worked to get the job done. This included switching to a higher number of smaller vessels, creating crew ‘households’ who lived and worked together at all times, introducing new welfare protocols and minimising crew changes.

    This comprehensive approach allowed the project to be completed on time, creating a source of vital green energy to keep homes, businesses and communities powered during the crisis and beyond. East Anglia ONE will now play a major part in contributing to the UK’s target of meeting Net Zero by 2050.

    In addition to the significant impact the windfarm will have on the UK’s low carbon future, East Anglia ONE’s achievement and ambition will continue far beyond energy power. The site has already brought major benefits to the local economy, regional jobs market and wider UK supply chain.

    ScottishPower Renewables co-invested GBP 5 million in Peel Ports Great Yarmouth to prepare it for construction and marshalling activity. Over the course of the project, more than half of the project’s supply chain has come from the UK market, exceeding the commitments made as part of its successful bid for Contract for Difference funding.

    The two new apprentices will be based at East Anglia ONE’s state-of-the-art new operations and maintenance building at Hamilton Dock, Lowestoft; a key part of a GBP 25million investment made by ScottishPower Renewables into the port. The apprentice recruitment drive comes on the back of the offshore wind industry target announced in March to employ 3,000 new apprentices across the industry by 2030.

    CrossWind Wins Tender for Hollandse Kust (Noord) Wind Farm

    The CrossWind consortium, a joint venture between Shell in the Netherlands and Eneco, has been awarded the tender for the subsidy-free offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord). The wind farm will help to meet the objectives of the Dutch Climate Accord and the EU’s Green Deal. Both companyes have already taken their final investment decisions on the project. The consortium plans to have Hollandse Kust (noord) operational in 2023 with an installed capacity of 759 MW, generating at least 3.3 TWh per year. This is enough renewable power to supply more than 1 million Dutch households with green electricity. The wind farm will be located 18.5 kilometres off the coast of The Netherlands near the town of Egmond aan Zee.

    Offshore wind projects produce intermittent electricity. Balancing these dips and peaks and integrating this electricity into the national energy system requires new technologies. That is why the offshore wind farm will include the following five technology demonstrations that could be implemented at full-scale in the future: a floating solar park; short-term battery storage; turbines that are optimally tuned to the network to minimise the negative ‘wake’-effects that wind turbines have on each other; ‘green hydrogen’ made by electrolysis as a further storage technique and the combination of these individual measures to ensure a continuous power supply regardless of the wind situation.

    Working together is crucial for the transition to a cleaner energy system across Europe and within each country. For this reason, the CrossWind team intends to work closely with universities and scientific institutions to develop further technical innovations. We intend to share the lessons learned from developing this wind farm with a broad audience – varying from the academic world to the general public.

    Vattenfall’s Largest Hybrid Energy Park is Taking Shape in Netherlands

    In the south-west of the Netherlands, Vattenfall is currently constructing its largest hybrid energy park. Once operational this farm will consist of 6 wind turbines, 115,000 solar panels and 12 sea containers with batteries. The wind turbines have been installed, the construction of the solar panels started in June and the batteries are currently being tested off-site, ready for delivery in August. The amount of green electricity that the energy park will produce corresponds to the annual consumption of 39,000 households. The Haringvliet project is special as it is the first of its kind within Vattenfall. It is centred around maximising the use of renewable energy, reducing costs, and having as little impact on the environment as possible by optimising synergies between the technologies.

    Starting in February 2020, it took two months to complete all six turbines of Energy park Haringvliet Zuid.

    At the moment the turbines are being tested and optimised before they will be commissioned.

    At the beginning of May 2020, the first piles for the solar panels were driven into the ground, followed by the assembly of the first 20 of 115,000 solar panels of Energy park Haringvliet Zuid. Once operational the solar panels alone will produce enough to supply 12,000 households with green electricity.

    Energy Park Haringvliet Zuid is one of Vattenfall’s nature-inclusive solar parks. In the design of the park, Vattenfall has considered the experiences of cyclists and walkers in the area: they were allowed to contribute ideas for the construction of a cycle path and a view hill, and the solar panels were no higher than 1,5 metres so that all passers-by can see over them. At the moment Vattenfall is installing beehives.

    At their factory, supplier Alfen is preparing 12 sea containers containing 288 BMW batteries and the necessary peripherals. These are the same batteries that are used in the BMW i3 electric car. The 12 MW energy storage system is designed to keep the electricity grid in balance and can be used as storage of renewable power in the future.

    In addition, there will also be a battery substation at the energy park, connecting all the systems and the entire energy storage system to the rest of the energy park.

    Ceremony Marks Start of Machine Assembly of ITER Reactor in France

    The ceremony marking the start of the machine assembly of ITER, the international experimental tokamak nuclear fusion reactor, has taken place online. Russia plays a significant role in this project’s development, alongside the member states of the European Union, United States, India, China, South Korea, and Japan. The assembly and installation stage of a tokamak reactor is a momentous event for the global scientific community. ITER, as the world’s largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment, intends to reproduce the thermonuclear power of the sun on Earth for energy purposes. Once completed, it is hoped that ITER will provide mankind with a reliable and efficient source of energy for millions of years. The reactor operates on the principle of nuclear fusion and requires seawater and lithium as raw materials for its fuel.

    ITER is an international experimental thermonuclear reactor based on the concept of a tokamak – a Soviet-developed device that uses a magnetic field to draw hot plasma into a torus (a revolving three-dimensional circle). One of the most prominent examples of international cooperation in the development of nuclear power, this scientific “mega project” intends to demonstrate that it is possible to control thermonuclear fusion on an industrial scale. The project is being developed by the member states of the European Union, alongside Russia, United States, India, China, South Korea, and Japan.

    The idea of building an international fusion reactor was initially introduced in 1985 by Mikhail Gorbachev and supported by presidents Ronald Reagan and Fran?ois Mitterrand. ROSATOM is responsible for the fulfillment of Russia’s obligations in the framework of the ITER project. The “ITER Project Centre” coordinates all activities.

    Global Offshore Wind Capacity will surge to over 234 GW by 2030

    According to a new report from the Global Wind Energy Council, Global offshore wind capacity will surge to over 234 GW by 2030 from 29.1 GW at the end of 2019, led by exponential growth in the Asia-Pacific region and continued strong growth in Europe. The report finds that 2019 was the best year on record for offshore wind, with 6.1 GW of new capacity added globally, bringing total global cumulative installations to 29.1 GW. China remains in the number one spot for the second year in a row for new installations, installing a record 2.4 GW, followed by the UK at 1.8 GW and Germany at 1.1 GW. While Europe continues to be the leading region for offshore wind, countries in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan, and South Korea, as well as the US market are quickly picking up the pace and will be regions of significant growth in the next decade.

    GWEC Market Intelligence forecasts that through 2030, more than 205 GW of new offshore wind capacity will be added globally, including at least 6.2 GW of floating offshore wind. This represents a 15 GW increase from the forecasts in GWEC Market Intelligence’s pre-COVID forecast, demonstrating the resilience of the sector to play a major role in powering both the energy transition and a green recovery.

    The global offshore market has grown on average by 24 per cent each year since 2013. Europe remains the largest market for offshore wind as of the end of 2019, making up 75 per cent of total global installations. Europe will continue to be a leader in offshore wind, with an ambitious 450 GW goal by 2050 driven by installations in the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Denmark and Poland, with several other EU markets posting double-digit volumes.

    North America currently has just 30 MW of offshore wind capacity in operation at the end of 2019, but deployment will accelerate in the coming years with 23 GW forecasted to be installed by 2030. The majority of this growth will come from the budding industry in the US, and we can expect to already see utility-scale projects coming online by 2024 in the country.

    The report highlights increased activity level in the Asia-Pacific region thanks to increased national ambition, led by China where 52 GW of new offshore wind capacity is expected to be installed by 2030. Taiwan is set to become the second-largest offshore wind market in Asia after Mainland China, with a goal of 5.5 GW by 2025 and an additional 10 GW by 2035. Other markets in the region are also beginning to scale-up their offshore wind markets, with Vietnam, Japan and South Korea expected to install 5.2 GW, 7.2 GW and 12 GW of offshore wind capacity respectively.

    Nieuwe windmolens: meer groene energie en beter voor vogels

    Door nieuwe windparken en slimme innovaties groeit de hoeveelheid opgewekte windenergie snel. Dit zijn de windturbines van de toekomst.

    In 2019 steeg wereldwijd de hoeveelheid geïnstalleerde windcapaciteit met maar liefst 19% procent tot 651 gigawatt, zo becijferde de Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) in hun jaarlijkse rapport. Hoewel de windcapaciteit volgens de GWEC nog niet snel genoeg groeit om de doelen van Parijs te halen, bieden nieuwe ontwikkelingen hoop. Niet alleen komen er elk jaar veel windmolens bij, ook worden ze steeds efficiënter en goedkoper. Daarnaast werken wetenschappers en ontwerpers aan slimme opslagsystemen voor de opgewekte energie, en proberen ze de impact op vogels en zeeleven te verkleinen.

    Nederland is bezig met een inhaalslag op het gebied van duurzame energie. En dat is hard nodig, want op dit moment is het percentage energie uit hernieuwbare bronnen het laagst van heel Europa. In 2019 kwam in ons land slechts 8,6% van de opgewekte energie uit duurzame bronnen, terwijl Nederland de doelstelling heeft om in 2020 op minimaal 14% uit te komen.

    Gelukkig worden er de komende jaren veel nieuwe Nederlandse windparken aangesloten op het energienet waardoor de doelstelling van 16% in 2023 wél binnen handbereik komt.

    Zo bouwt Vattenfall momenteel het windpark Holland Kust Zuid, het grootste ongesubsidieerde offshore windpark ter wereld. De 140 windturbines leveren straks energie voor meer dan 2 miljoen Nederlandse huishoudens. In totaal komen er de komende jaren zes grote windparken op zee bij. De overheid wil dat uiteindelijk in 2030 minimaal 27% van alle gebruikte energie uit duurzame bronnen komt.

    Naast het grootste ongesubsidieerde offshore windpark, bevindt ook de grootste én krachtigste windturbine ter wereld zich in ons land: de Haliade X. Deze kolos staat in de haven van Rotterdam. Met een bruto jaarlijkse opbrengst van 67 GWh zou één windturbine - onder ideale omstandigheden - ruim 16.000 huishoudens van energie kunnen voorzien! Daarbij moet wel worden opgemerkt dat de netto jaarlijkse opbrengst uiteindelijk wat lager uitvalt.

    Windmolenpark wordt onderwaterparadijs

    Onderzoeksleider van het project bij ECN.TNO Peter Eecen liet eerder aan Scientias weten dat zijn collega's bezig zijn technologie te ontwerpen om windparken op zee te combineren met kunstriffen en zeewierkwekerijen. Daarmee zou de impact op het zeeleven kunnen worden verkleind.

    Dat is ook de inzet van het project De Rijke Noordzee: windparken omtoveren tot natuurparken onder water. Eerder schreven we al hoe dit unieke project met onder andere rifballen en oesterkooien de natuur versterkt. Ook kunnen windparken de bodem beschermen tegen schadelijke vormen van intensieve visserij. In onderstaande video wordt het project verder uitgelegd.

    Naast het leven in de zee is er ook steeds meer aandacht voor de impact van windparken op het leven in de lucht. De ronddraaiende wieken van windturbines kunnen namelijk gevaarlijk zijn voor vogels. Om tijdens de energietransitie zowel vogels als het leven in de Noordzee te beschermen, hebben de overheid, energiebedrijven en natuur- en milieuorganisaties daarom begin 2020 het Akkoord voor de Noordzee gesloten.

    Hierin is afgesproken om de hoeveelheid beschermde natuur in de Noordzee uit te breiden. Zo wil men kwetsbare soorten als haaien en zeevogels beter beschermen. In de beschermde vogelgebieden mogen helemaal geen windmolens worden geplaatst.

    België komt met vogelvriendelijkere windmolens
    Het beschermen van vogels was ook een van de redenen voor Ludo Loyens van het Belgische Wingardium Energy om energie op te wekken met Cyclone-Turbines. Deze windturbines hebben een verticale as waardoor ze niet alleen een hogere windkracht aankunnen, maar ook beter zichtbaar zijn voor vogels. De opgewekte energie kan worden gebruikt om elektrische auto's en fietsen op te laden, maar ook om met regenwater groene waterstof te produceren.

    Daarmee kan de opgewekte energie direct lokaal worden opgeslagen, waardoor het elektriciteitsnetwerk kan worden ontlast. De slimme opslag van energie is dan ook een van de voorwaarden om de energietransitie te laten slagen.

    Ook de nieuwe windwatermolen van Hy-Gro, die binnenkort in de Wieringmeerpolder wordt gebouwd, zet de opgewekte energie direct om in waterstof. Door de elektrolyzer - het apparaat dat waterstof maakt van stroom en water - in de windturbine te integreren verwachten de initiatiefnemers een hoger rendement te behalen.

    Je eigen windenergie opwekken
    In de toekomst wordt windenergie niet alleen opgewekt op zee of op het platteland, maar ook midden in de stad. Als het aan de Britse studenten Yaseen Noorani en Nicolas Orellana ligt kunnen stadsbewoners binnenkort zelf windenergie opwekken met kleine windturbines.

    Het unieke design zorgt ervoor dat ook wanneer de wind steeds van richting verandert - zoals vaak het geval is in de stad - deze effectief duurzame energie kan opwekken. Met hun uitvinding wonnen ze in 2018 de eerste prijs bij de James Dyson Awards. In onderstaande video vertellen ze over hun plannen.
