First foundation for Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in place The first foundation for Vattenfall’s Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm, 15-40 kilometres off the coast of Denmark, has been placed in the sea bed of the Baltic Sea. On the foundations, 72 turbines will be mounted to create Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm with a capacity to cover the annual electricity consumption of approximately 600,000 Danish households. Installation of the foundations is expected to run into the autumn this year with installation of turbines starting in 2021. Despite restrictions following the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of Kriegers Flak is on schedule to be in full operation by the end of 2021, at the latest. Kriegers Flak is the latest and largest of Vattenfall’s recent offshore projects in Denmark. The others being Horns Rev 3, which was inaugurated last year, and Vesterhav Syd & Nord, which are scheduled to be in full operation by the end of 2023, at latest. During pile driving, a double curtain of bubbles will be deployed around each foundation to mitigate noise as a safeguard for marine mammals. The so-called monopile foundations have been manufactured by EEW-SPC in Rostock. On top of the foundations, transition pieces from Bladt Industries will be mounted to carry the 8.4 MW Siemens Gamesa turbines. The foundations will be transported and installed by Van Oord. About Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm With a production capacity of just over 600 MW, Kriegers Flak will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm The offshore wind farm’s production can cover the annual electricity consumption in 600,000 Danish households The 72 turbines have a total height of 188 metres and each monopile foundation weighs up to 800 tonnes The wind farm is located in the Baltic Sea, 15-40 kilometres off the Danish coast. Work Starts on Windpark Salzgitter Work has now officially started to construct the seven turbines comprising the Windpark Salzgitter. Three will be erected on the site of the integrated steelworks operated by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, with four more on the surrounding Group premises. The developer and operator of the park is Avacon Natur GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Avacon AG. The hubs of the turbines built by Vestas will reach a height of 169 meters. They will have an overall output of around 30 MW. The cost of the project as a whole, including the construction of the wind turbines and the hydrogen plant as well as the necessary infrastructure, amounts to around 50 million euro. The turbines are another building block in the pioneering Salzgitter Wind Hydrogen energy project, the purpose of which is to produce green hydrogen for use in steel production. Also in the course of this year, Salzgitter Flachstahl will be building a PEM Electrolysis plant to be supplied by Siemens. The hydrogen can be used in the reduction of iron ore in place of the usual carbon. It therefore plays an important role in the SALCOS – Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking” concept and contributes to the goal of low-CO2 steel production. Works in preparation for the seven turbines began back in January, starting with access roads and areas for cranes and construction machinery. The turbines are scheduled to be completed in autumn 2020. The construction site is located on Salzgitter Group premises. Access is not permitted for safety reasons. Toyota Motor Europe Installs Wind Turbine & Solar Panels at Brussels Head Office As part of ongoing activities in Europe to transition its operations to clean renewable energy, Toyota Motor Europe has invested in two new technologies to produce on-site generated electricity at its Brussels headquarters. The company recently installed a wind turbine in front of its buildings, using state-of-the art technology. Additionally, 1400 solar panels have been placed on the roof of the Toyota After Sales Centre at the same site. Toyota Motor Europe is the first company within the Brussels area to mount a privately-owned wind turbine on its premises, and with a total capacity of 10 kW, it can generate up to 24 MWh per year. The wind turbine’s advanced design incorporates vertical wings which allow it to efficiently harness the wind from all directions and has an innovative ‘owl’ finish to reduce noise. And, standing at a height of only 23 m, it avoids any risk of interference with the nearby Zaventem airport’s operations. Harnessing wind power is only one part of Toyota Motor Europe’s plan - the company’s renewable electricity supply is further boosted with the installation of 1400 photovoltaic panels capable of generating a maximum power of 460 kWp. It is expected that this solar array will generate 360 MWh per year. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Siemens Gamesa Launches 14 MW Offshore Direct Drive Turbine with 222-Meter Rotor Siemens Gamesa’s new SG 14-222 DD offshore Direct Drive wind turbine now sees the light of day as a part of the solution. With an unprecedented 14-megawatt capacity, reaching up to 15 MW using the company’s Power Boost function, a 222-meter diameter rotor, 108-meter long blades, and an astounding 39,000 m2 swept area, the newest Siemens Gamesa wind turbine stands tall in a world currently undergoing enormous upheaval. The 14 MW capacity allows one SG 14-222 DD machine able to provide enough energy to power approximately 18,000 average European households every year. Approximately 30 SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines could furthermore cover the annual electricity consumption of Bilbao, Spain. The 222-meter diameter rotor uses the new Siemens Gamesa B108 blades. As long as almost three Space Shuttles placed end-to-end, each 108-meter long IntegralBlade is cast in one piece using patented Siemens Gamesa blade technologies. Additionally, the turbine’s massive 39,000 m2 swept area is equivalent to approximately 5.5 standard football pitches. It allows the SG 14-222 DD to provide an increase of more than 25% in Annual Energy Production compared to the SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine. Furthermore, the new offshore giant features a low nacelle weight at 500 metric tons. This light weight enables Siemens Gamesa to safely utilize an optimized tower and foundation substructure compared to a heavier nacelle. Benefits thus arise in the form of lower costs per turbine by minimizing sourced materials and reducing transportation needs. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Central Components for the World's Largest Fusion Experiment Complete MAN Energy Solutions has successfully assembled two further core components for the world's largest fusion experiment ITER in Cadarache in southern France. In addition to the already-completed Lower Cylinder', the new components, Base Section and Upper Cylinder, are central to the construction of the cryostat, the largest stainless steel, high vacuum chamber ever built, which will form the exterior of the fusion reactor. When fully assembled, the cryostat will be 30 meter tall with a volume of 16,000 cubic meters. With the Base Section and Upper Cylinder completed, the construction of the fourth and final component of the cryostat now begin with MAN Energy Solutions once again responsible for assembly and welding work. Assembly of the four individual sections is scheduled for late-summer 2020. A total of 35 nations are working on the ITER project to build the world's largest tokamak: a fusion reactor operating on the principle of magnetic confinement. The facility is intended to demonstrate that nuclear fusion can be a realistic and CO2-free energy source of the future. The heart of the tokamak (acronym of the Russian translation: "Ring chamber with magnetic coils“) is a vacuum vessel in which the atomic nuclei of hydrogen isotopes – deuterium and tritium – fuse into helium. The enormous heat generated by this process will be used to generate energy and mimics the principle by which the sun and other stars function. One gram of fusion plasma contains the energy of approximately twelve tons of coal. Ultimately, ITER will operate with just three grams of fusion plasma and generate 500 MW of thermal power. The cryostat forms the envelope of the ITER machine and provides the ultracold, vacuous environment necessary for the superconducting coils and vacuum vessel to work. In total, the cryostat consists of 54 individual elements produced by Indian company, Larsen & Toubro, and are assembled on the construction site by MAN Energy Solutions. “It is a special honour for us to be involved in the most ambitious energy project in the world. We are helping to bring the source of solar enery to earth and thus generate CO2-free energy in huge quantities. This project unites the world community and has the potential to revolutionize energy production,” added Anger. Construction work on the site of the ITER project began in 2012, with the construction of the reactor house starting two years later. The assembly of the ITER machine in the reactor building will begin in late-summer 2020. With the assembly of the cyrostat, MAN Energy Solution is involved on a core component. According to current plans, the fusion reactor will generate the first plasma in 2025, with the full experiment scheduled to begin in 2035. Source : Strategic Research Institute

EBRD Invests in Wind and Solar Energy in Poland The EBRD is advancing the green energy transition in Poland by supporting Qair’s portfolio of almost 200 MW of renewable energy with five loans totalling PLN 280 million, approximately EUR 63 million equivalent. BNP Paribas is also providing project finance lending to the portfolio on a parallel basis. The portfolio includes the construction under the Polish renewable energy auction support scheme (contract for difference) of 93 MW of new capacity – the three wind farms Udanin (50 MW), Parzeczew (9 MW) and Wrzesnia (9 MW) and 25 MW of solar photovoltaic – as well as the operation of wind farms Linowo (58 MW) and Rzepin (48 MW). The EBRD loans will be provided to five Polish special-purpose vehicles that are ultimately owned by two experienced sponsors – the French renewable energy developer and operator Qair and the French infrastructure fund RGreen Invest. As a leader in the independent production of energy from renewable sources, for over 30 years Qair has been promoting energy production methods based on local natural assets (sun, wind, water, biomass) both grid-connected and decentralised off-grid. The Qair group is independent and is owned by the family of Jean-Marc Bouchet, president and founder. Poland still generates 80 per cent of its energy from coal, with harmful effects on the environment and human health. The country has committed itself to the EU climate and energy targets for 2030, which include a reduction of at least 40 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy has a key role to play in meeting that goal. The EBRD started investing in Poland in 1991 and to date has provided €10.3 billion through 434 projects to all sectors of the economy. Supporting the country’s green transition with investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency remains one of the Bank’s priorities in Poland. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Portugal Approves Hydrogen-Based Power Generation Portugal’s Council of Ministers on 21 May gave the green light to a National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 and the EN-H2 National Hydrogen Strategy. One of the cornerstones of the 10-year investment programme will be the construction of a 1-GW green hydrogen plant at Sines. This EUR 2.85 billion project is slated for completion by 2030 and will use solar energy and wind. Portugal has a stated ambition of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 45%-55% by 2030 and is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2050. Its decarbonisation efforts will be cross-industry and will include the transportation sector. One of the country’s initiatives will be the creation of a laboratory to undertake research and development into green hydrogen projects. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Windplus is a consortium between EDP Renováveis, Engie, Repsol, and Principle Power The WindFloat Atlantic project is taking one of the final steps towards becoming fully operational. The last of the three pre-assembled wind turbine platforms making up the project has left the Port of Ferrol today, heading for its final destination 20 km off the coast of Portugal at Viana do Castelo, in a journey that will take three days. This operation will be completed by hooking up this last unit to the pre-laid mooring system and connecting it to the rest of the offshore wind farm. This third platform will be installed next to the other two units, which are already up and running and supplying energy to the Portuguese electricity grid. Transporting each of the three WindFloat Atlantic floating structures is a milestone in itself, as it sidesteps the need for towing craft designed specifically for this process and makes it possible for the project to be replicated elsewhere. The floating structure – measuring 30 m high and with a 50 m distance between each of its columns – can support the world's largest commercially available wind turbines, of 8.4 MW production capacity each, on a floating structure. Once all three platforms making up the wind farm are installed, with their 25 MW of production capacity they will be able to generate enough energy to supply the equivalent of 60,000 users each year. WindFloat Atlantic could save almost 1.1 million tons of CO2. About WindFloat Atlantic project The project is led by the Windplus, comprising EDP Renewables (54.4%), Engie (25%), Repsol (19.4%) and Principle Power Inc. (1.2%). The facility has three wind turbines mounted on floating platforms which are anchored with chains to the seabed at a depth of 100 m. The project uses WindFloat ® technology that minimises the environmental impact and facilitates access to untapped wind resources in deep waters. The platforms have been built jointly by the two Iberian countries: two of them were manufactured at the shipyards in Setúbal (Portugal), while the third was constructed in Avilés and Fene (Spain). This initiative has had the support from public and private institutions, encouraging companies that are leaders in their respective markets to take part in the project; while the Government of Portugal, European Commission and the European Investment Bank have provided financial support. The companies that have made this project possible include, in addition to Principle Power, the joint venture between Navantia/Windar, the A- Silva Matos Group, Bourbon, the wind turbine supplier MHI Vestas and dynamic cable supplier JDR Cables. WindFloat Atlantic project marks an important milestone for the industry as this is the first semi-submersible floating wind farm in the world. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Total enters into a Giant Offshore Wind Farm Project in Scottish North Sea Total has entered into an agreement with SSE Renewables, to acquire a 51% stake in the Seagreen 1 offshore wind farm project for an upfront payment at closing of GP 70 million and earn-outs up to GP 60 million in aggregate subject to performance conditions. The 1,140 megawatts project has reached simultaneously a final investment decision and financial close. The purchase agreement also covers a potential extension opportunity of up to 360 MW. Located 27 kilometers from the coastline in Scottish waters of UK North Sea, Seagreen 1 has secured all necessary major permits and onshore construction began in Q1 2020. Designed to cover the energy needs of around 1 million homes, the project will start producing renewable electricity from end of 2022. Once completed, it will be Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm. The project represents a global investment of around 3.7 B$. Total has secured close to 70% of external financing for its 51% stake. Seagreen 1 benefits from a 15-year CfD (Contract for Difference) awarded by the UK Government for 454 MW, representing 42% of the total project capacity. An additional 30% of the project capacities will also be contracted under a private CfD with the SSE Group. Both contracts contribute to securing project revenues. The transaction remains subject to conditions precedent, including public authorities approval and should be finalized by July 2020. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Vattenfall Approves Investment in Hollandse Kust Zuid Offshore Wind Farm Vattenfall has taken final investment decision for Hollandse Kust Zuid 1-4 proceeding with the construction of what will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm. With its installed capacity of 1,500 MW, the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm will be the largest of its kind worldwide, when fully operational in 2023. It will have a renewable electricity output equivalent to the annual consumption of over two million Dutch households. Vattenfall was awarded permits for the construction of Hollandse Kust Zuid after winning two subsidy-free tender rounds in 2018 and 2019. The two projects have been combined into one wind farm to optimise the process. A key element in solving climate change is to electrify transportation, heating and industry processes with the help of fossil free electricity. In 2023, Hollandse Kust Zuid will provide a third of the total installed offshore wind capacity in the Netherlands, making a major contribution to the Dutch Government’s renewable energy targets. Both the construction, which will be initiated offshore in 2021, and operation of the wind farm and its service facility will offer significant regional business opportunities and long term high quality employment. Vattenfall has partnered with the following suppliers: Siemens Gamesa for turbine manufacturing and partial installationDutch based Sif Group for foundation manufacturing Dutch based TKF for inter-array cable systems manufacturing Prysmian for inter-array cable systems manufacturing Subsea 7 for foundation and inter-array cable systems installation Swire Blue Ocean for turbine installation. Turbine Supply Contract for Seagreen Finalised SSE Renewables has completed and signed the turbine supply contract with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind for the Seagreen offshore wind farm. The 1,075MW project is located 27km off the coast of Angus. When complete Seagreen is expected to be Scotland’s single largest source of renewable energy, providing a significant contribution to Scotland’s net-zero ambition and enough clean, renewable energy to power 1 million homes. Under the contract MHI Vestas will manufacture 114 V164-10 MW turbines which it will then install in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland in 2021. SSE Renewables has also signed a service and maintenance agreement at the project with MHI Vestas for a period of 15 years. At the end of 2019, SSE Renewables appointed Montrose port as the preferred location of the operations and maintenance base for Seagreen, bringing investment and jobs to the local area for the lifetime of the project. Seagreen is the only Scottish offshore wind project to have been successful in the UK Government’s most recent auction for low carbon power, with a portion of the project awarded a 15-year contract.
