SULLOM Voe Terminal to Produce 1 Million Tonnes of Hydrogen

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    2 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

SULLOM Voe Terminal operator EnQuest plans to produce around one million tonnes of green hydrogen a year from the site in the future for use locally as well as for export to the UK, Europe and beyond. This is in linewith plans through the ORION project to turn Shetland into a clean energy island, which has industrial scale hydrogen production as a primary element. Hydrogen could be produced using wind power, and its production is a key part of the large offshore wind farms mooted for the seas around Shetland.

EnQuest said that it is exploring opportunities to use excess energy produced by wind power from onshore and offshore wind farms being developed near the Sullom Voe site to produce green hydrogen. Last year the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Shetland Islands Council to work exclusively together to progress new energy and decarbonisation opportunities using the Sullom Voe Terminal site.

The only wind farm currently being developed in Shetland is the 103-turbine Viking Energy project, which is set to go live in 2024 and will export a significant amount of energy.

Gasunie & Thyssengas to Create North-South Corridor for Hydrogen

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    3 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

The transmission system operators Gasunie and Thyssengas have presented concrete plans for a hydrogen pipeline between Wilhelmshaven and Wesseling near Cologne. As early as 2028, quantities of hydrogen produced in the coastal region of Wilhelmshaven or imported from Norway, among others, are to be transported directly to the consumption centres on the Rhine and Ruhr via the north-south connection. The efficient H2 corridor is made possible by repurposing existing transport pipelines of the project partners and building new sections. Due to the prominent importance of the infrastructure project, both Gasunie and Thyssengas have submitted PCI (Projects of Common Interest) applications to the European Commission for the two sub-sections.

The great benefit of the transport route is that it connects existing hydrogen clusters and projects. In the north it connects to the hydrogen network Hyperlink planned by Gasunie, in the south to the subprojects of the hydrogen initiative GETH2 for which Thyssengas is responsible. In addition, in conjunction with other planned pipeline projects, the important consumption centres from Münsterland via the Ruhr area to the Rhineland can be supplied with hydrogen. The planned North-South corridor will thus make a significant contribution to the establishment of an integrated hydrogen network in Germany and to the hydrogen market ramp-up in Europe.

The report is divided into two sections:

The northern part consists of the Wilhelmshaven-Hyperlink-Connection section, for which Gasunie has submitted a PCI application. "This sub-project has great potential for the future hydrogen economy by connecting the Energy Hub Wilhelmshaven and the planned hydrogen export pipeline from Norway to Germany with our hyperlink hydrogen transport network and the hydrogen caverns of the Etzel storage facility. The connection with Hyperlink brings the following advantages for hydrogen feeders in Wilhelmshaven: On the one hand, this is the direct connection to Gasunie's Dutch hydrogen network HyNetwork Services and to Energinet's Danish hydrogen backbone. On the other hand, the direct connection to the hydrogen network in the Salzgitter area, which enables hydrogen transport to Berlin.

For the southern section of the project between Barßel and Cologne & Wesseling, the transmission system operator Thyssengas has submitted a PCI application to the EU and will advance the subproject in cooperation with Gasunie. Through consistent integration with other H2 pipeline projects, the consumption centers in North Rhine-Westphalia can be connected to the north-south corridor for hydrogen – from Münsterland via the Ruhr area to the chemical region of Cologne. For this purpose, connections to the GETH2 hydrogen cluster, to future hydrogen storage facilities and to the border crossing point for hydrogen in Vlieghuis (Netherlands) are planned.

US electrolyser start-up EvolOH Inc is planning to build its first manufacturing plant in Massachusetts with an annual capacity of up to 3.75 GW.

The facility will produce and assemble the company’s anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser stacks and when fully operational, it will be the world’s largest green hydrogen electrolyser plant, the company said this week.

Do you know we have a daily hydrogen newsletter? Subscribe here for free!

Work on the facility will start later in 2023, with manufacturing expected to begin in 2025.

Menlo Park, California-based EvolOH is seeking to commercialise low-cost water electrolysers. The company says its stacks are designed for a high-speed manufacturing process and use cheap, domestically available materials.

“Since EvolOH’s founding our target was not just to develop a better, less expensive electrolysis technology, but also to develop a better, less expensive electrolyser manufacturing process,” said chief executive Jimmy Rojas.

The company’s product is intended for large-scale power-to-hydrogen facilities. The power rating is up to 5 MW, or 2 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, for a single stack, and 50 MW, or 20 tonnes per day, for a single containerised module.

EvolOH also plans a second factory with an annual capacity of up to 15 GW, which is targeted to start construction in 2026.

Nel to expand US plant to 500 MW of electrolyser capacity

Nel to expand US plant to 500 MW of electrolyser capacity Nel's electrolyser production facility in Heroya, Norway. Source: Nel ASA.

Norwegian electrolyser manufacturer Nel ASA (OSE:NEL) on Tuesday said it has decided to increase the capacity of its proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser manufacturing facility in Wallingford, Connecticut to about 500 MW a year.

The company will invest around NOK 260 million (USD 25m/EUR 24m) in the expansion, with the new production line expected to reach nameplate capacity in 2025.

Do you know we have a daily hydrogen newsletter? Subscribe here for free!

“With this expansion, we will increase PEM production capacity substantially and simultaneously reduce stack cost and improve stack efficiency,” said Nel chief executive Hakon Volldal.

The expansion is part of Nel's plans for a gigafactory in the US with a potential capacity of up to 4 GW, split between both PEM and Alkaline. It is currently considering locations in three states and will make a final decision shortly, said Volldal.

The development of the about 500 MW PEM production line in the US comes after last year Nel opened its 500-MW fully automated manufacturing facility at Heroya, Norway. The company is adding a second production line at the Heroya facility to bring its capacity to some 1 GW in April 2024.

The factory is now running full steam to meet demand.

“During the last months, we have received significant purchase orders for large-scale electrolyser projects. Therefore, we have ramped up production from three to five shifts, meaning that production is now running around the clock, also on the weekends,” said Volldal.

Meanwhile on Thursday Nel published its full-year report, which showed that order intake in 2022 was NOK 2.28 billion, leaving the order backlog at the end of the year at NOK 2.61 billion, up 112% from 2021.

Annual revenue and operating income increased 25% to NOK 994 million, with revenues from the electrolyser division rising 61% and reaching a share of 75% in Nel’s total revenue while Fueling revenue fell 26%.

Net loss was NOK 1.17 billion, compared to a loss of NOK 1.67 billion in 2021. The negative result for 2022 reflects costs for scaling the business and impairment of goodwill and technology in Fueling. The company also said it will be improving its project execution skills, which are still seeing inefficiencies and cost overruns against the backdrop of an emerging market.

The BMW Group is presenting international media representatives with the first vehicles in a pilot fleet that will go into service this year. After four years of development work, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen vehicle and development project is entering its critical next phase.

The fleet of about 100 vehicles will then be employed internationally for demonstration and trial purposes for various target groups. This active driving experience will therefore be the first chance for people not involved in the development process to gain a direct impression of what the BMW iX5 Hydrogen has to offer.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen developed on the basis of the current BMW X5 was first unveiled as a concept at the IAA show in 2019. Initial prototypes were then made available at the IAA Mobility 2021 for visitors to experience in action as shuttle vehicles.

The BMW Group produces the highly efficient fuel cell systems for the pilot fleet at its in-house competence centre for hydrogen in Munich. This technology is one of the core elements in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and generates a high continuous output of 125 kW/170 hp.

In addition to the technological equivalents of features found on combustion engines, such as charge air coolers, air filters, control units and sensors, the BMW Group also developed special hydrogen components for its new fuel cell system. These include the high-speed compressor with turbine and high-voltage coolant pump, for instance.

The BMW Group sources the individual fuel cells from the Toyota Motor Corporation. The two companies have enjoyed a partnership characterised by trust for many years and have been collaborating on fuel cell drive systems since 2013.

    Rina joins African Hydrogen Partnership
    68 Views

Italian certification body Rina is boosting its presence in the hydrogen economy and joining the African Hydrogen Partnership Trade Association (AHP) to develop the green H2 value chain and the uptake of hydrogen-based chemicals.

The European Union is helping Africa to build its green hydrogen economy. Last year under the so-called REPowerEU plan, the EU boosted its hydrogen imports target to 20 million tonnes per year by 2030. That means around 10m t/y of green hydrogen will be imported from diverse suppliers, with Africa and the Mediterranean region expected to contribute significantly, Kallanish notes.

The AHP’s mission is to help establish a solid hydrogen industry in all African nations and promote partnerships within the continent and with other international organisations. It vows to accelerate the uptake of renewable sources, green hydrogen and fuel cell technology and counts amongst its members the port of Rotterdam, AngloAmerican, HDF energy, Hydrogen Europe and Gencell.

“In conjunction with our African footprint, our expertise in technologies enables us to open new hydrogen corridors, supporting local and international initiatives while acting as a system integrator along the entire hydrogen value chain," Rina’s carbon reduction executive vice president Andrea Bombardi says in a note, adding that the collaboration with AHP intends to build a bridge between Europe and Africa. Rina will contribute with its services in consulting engineering, inspection, testing and certification for African hydrogen projects. AHP expects Rina’s membership to provide assurances to companies, investors and regulators.

“Renewable African hydrogen is essential to the world and Europe meeting its net-zero targets … As Africa ramps up its sustainable energy supply and many of its countries leapfrog to the new age of hydrogen technologies, the AHP is confident that clean, sustainable and renewable African hydrogen will price diesel and petrol out of the market between 2025 and 2030," AHP chairman Innocent Uwuijaren said when Belgium-based hydrogen and fuel cell association Hydrogen Europe joined AHP last year (see Kallanish 3 May 2022).

bp has launched the green hydrogen cluster of the Valencia region HyVal at its Castellón refinery. Led by bp, this public-private collaborative initiative is intended to be based around the phased development of up to 2GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 for producing green hydrogen at bp’s refinery.

HyVal is expected to play an instrumental role in decarbonizing the operations of bp’s Castellón refinery. Its transformation, including green hydrogen, biofuels and renewable energy, could see bp invest a total of up to €2B in Castellon by 2030.

In addition to being used by bp at the refinery, the green hydrogen produced will also be used in key hard-to-abate industries in the Valencia region, such as the ceramic industry replacing the natural gas used in their processes, chemical industries for the production of green ammonia and in heavy transport.

HyVal aims to support the development of Valencia region into a leader for the production of green hydrogen in Spain. Its hydrogen production is expected to be developed in phases.

The first, anticipated to be operational in 2027, will involve the installation of an electrolysis plant with at least 200MW capacity at Castellón refinery. This initial stage would be expected to produce up to 31,200 metric ton of green hydrogen per year. Use of this green hydrogen to replace natural gas is estimated to be able to avoid more than 300,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year when used first in the refinery and then in thermo-intensive industries and heavy transport. This green hydrogen will also be used as a feedstock for the production of SAF at the refinery.

In the second phase, which could be completed in 2030, the electrolysis plant would be expanded to reach a capacity of up to 2GW of net installed power. Green hydrogen production from such a world-scale plant could support both regional and national demand, as well as positioning Valencia region to export green hydrogen to the rest of Europe through the Mediterranean corridor of green hydrogen H2Med.

    7 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

The Dutch Hydrogen Delta consortium has submitted a plan to MPs Bontenbal, Boucke & Erkens to kickstart the electrolyser manufacturing industry and thus accelerates the hydrogen economy. The plan, De Nederlandse Waterstof Delta, was designed by 12 consortium partners and some € 80Min funding has been applied for from the National Growth Fund for its implementation.

The plan ensures that the Netherlands increases its aumetric tonomy and starts making its own plants needed to produce green hydrogen. De Nederlandse Waterstof Deltawill supply 1GW of plants annually from 2026. This allows it to supply half of all the plants the Netherlands needs to meet its interim climate targets by 2030.

The plants operate on the basis of a unique Dutch hydrogen battery, the Battolyser. This technology, developed at TU Delft, can store electricity and produce green hydrogen from renewable electricity. The system can produce hydrogen when there is plenty of wind and solar power available and supply electricity to the grid when there is a shortage of electricity due to low wind and solar power.

De Nederlandse Waterstof Delta aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 1GW of Battolysers in the Merwe-Vierhaven area M4H by 2026. According to the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the manufacturing industry is the missing link in the Dutch hydrogen economy. Factories making green hydrogen are being built on the Maasvlakte, for example. However, the associated equipment is not currently made in the Netherlands.

Toyoda Gosei Launches Hydrogen Tank for Commercial Vehicles

Toyoda Gosei has launched a large high pressure hydrogen tank. The new tanks are used in the mass-market light-duty fuel cell electric trucks that are being brought to the market by Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation, backed by Toyota Motor, Isuzu Motors and others.

These newly-developed large tanks can be filled with about eight times as much hydrogen as the passenger fuel cell vehicle tanks Toyoda Gosei produces for the Toyota Mirai, which are installed in the rear of that vehicle. In developing the larger tanks, Toyoda Gosei applied the technology for high-efficiency storage of hydrogen the company and Toyota Motor had refined in the tanks for the Mirai.

Delivery trucks travel long distances and make multiple deliveries each day, and so need to have a long driving range and fast refueling. Fuel cell trucks meet these needs and are expected to come into greater use. Toyoda Gosei will contribute to a hydrogen society through the development and production of hydrogen tanks that are a crucial component of fuel cell vehicles.
