    Published on :
    24 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

ADNOC has signed a memorandum of understanding with thyssenkrupp Uhde to explore a long-term partnership to create new markets for hydrogen and promote global clean energy value chains. The agreement will focus on the development of projects for large-scale ammonia cracking, which is used to extract hydrogen from ammonia after transportation. Ammonia is a carrier of hydrogen and it is much easier to compress and transport. When shipped, after arriving at its destination, the ammonia needs to be decomposed, or “cracked,” into hydrogen, before use in the energy value chain.

Under the agreement, the companies will work together to develop large-scale ammonia cracking plants with thyssenkrupp technology. The agreement will also lead to the exploration of opportunities in the clean energy value chain for the supply and shipment of low-carbon or green ammonia from the UAE to large-scale ammonia cracking facilities globally.

The ammonia cracking process is based on globally proven uhde reformer technology, which is applied in over 130 large-scale chemical plants across the world.

    Published on :
    25 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

Valencia is the Port of Hydrogen. The Valencian precinct has received the first load of hydrogen to supply the refuelling station located on the Xità quay. This historic milestone makes it the first port in Europe to have a hydrogen installation in real operating conditions. It is the only installation capable of supplying the needs of the terminals through the mobile hydrogen plant and the fixed tank that stores this fuel

This hydrogen supply station HRS includes a fixed part dedicated to the reception, storage and compression of hydrogen up to delivery pressure, on which the test was carried out today, and a mobile part which stores the compressed hydrogen and has a dispenser for refuelling the port machinery.

The first tubetrailer of green hydrogen cylinders arrived at the hydrogen plant and was loaded into the storage tank at the Port of Valencia. Different tests were carried out for about an hour to prepare the entire operation for filling the fixed tank located on the Xità quay with H2.

Next week, the mobile station will be loaded and will be responsible for travelling to the MSC and Grimaldi terminals to supply hydrogen to the two prototypes of port machinery, which will arrive in the near future, where this clean fuel will be tested.

Specifically, it will be tested in a ‘Reachstacker’ vehicle or container stacker and in a 4×4 tractor unit. In the coming weeks, a team of dockers and technicians from Valenciaport will travel to Holland to test the Reachstacker, which is being designed by Hyster Europe. The ro-ro tractor is being adapted by Atena Distretto. Both will run on fuel cells and electric motors, which will be powered by H2, and will be zero-emission.

This initiative is part of H2Ports -Implementing Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies in Ports-. It is an initiative coordinated by the Valenciaport Foundation in collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) and is financed by the European Union’s Clean Hydrogen JU programme. Its main objective is to test and validate hydrogen technologies on port machinery that will provide applicable and real solutions without affecting the performance and safety of port operations and producing zero local emissions. The Port of Valencia started working with hydrogen in 2019, before this project was launched.

bp to Evaluate Wilhelmshaven Hydrogen Hub in Germany

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    26 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

bp will evaluate the feasibility of building a new hydrogen hub in Germany. The project, which would be located in Wilhelmshaven, is expected to include an industry leading ammonia cracker which could provide up to 130,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen from green ammonia, per year, from 2028.

Green ammonia – produced by combining nitrogen with hydrogen derived from the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources – is expected to be shipped from bp green hydrogen projects around the world to Wilhelmshaven. The cracker converts the green ammonia into green hydrogen by splitting the larger molecule into its smaller nitrogen and hydrogen components which can then be used directly. It’s anticipated that up to 130,000 tons of hydrogen per year could be produced from the site, with scope for further expansion as the market for future fuels develops.

bp’s plans include utilising the existing infrastructure of the Nord-West Oelleitung (NWO) terminal at Wilhelmshaven, where it is a participating shareholder. With its deep-water harbour and pipeline system, Wilhelmshaven is one of the country’s most important energy terminals and is well positioned to support energy transition activities.

Additionally, bp’s plans propose to utilise the current oil & gas pipelines for use in hydrogen transport. The low-carbon hydrogen could then be delivered to customers in the Ruhr region and other centres of demand.

University Michigan Improves Photocatalytic Splitting Efficiency

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    27 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

A new kind of solar panel, developed at the University of Michigan, has achieved 9% efficiency in converting water into hydrogen and oxygen, mimicking a crucial step in natural photosynthesis. Outdoors, it represents a major leap in the technology, nearly 10 times more efficient than solar water-splitting experiments of its kind. But the biggest benefit is driving down the cost of sustainable hydrogen. This is enabled by shrinking the semiconductor, typically the most expensive part of the device. The team’s self-healing semiconductor withstands concentrated light equivalent to 160 suns.

Currently, humans produce hydrogen from the fossil fuel methane, using a great deal of fossil energy in the process. However, plants harvest hydrogen atoms from water using sunlight. As humanity tries to reduce its carbon emissions, hydrogen is attractive as both a standalone fuel and as a component in sustainable fuels made with recycled carbon dioxide. Likewise, it is needed for many chemical processes, producing fertilizers for instance.

Researches reduced the size of the semiconductor by more than 100 times compared to some semiconductors only working at low light intensity. And the second is using both the higher energy part of the solar spectrum to split water and the lower part of the spectrum to provide heat that encourages the reaction. The magic is enabled by a semiconductor catalyst that improves itself with use, resisting the degradation that such catalysts usually experience when they harness sunlight to drive chemical reactions.

In addition to handling high light intensities, it can thrive in high temperatures that are punishing to computer semiconductors. Higher temperatures speed up the water splitting process, and the extra heat also encourages the hydrogen and oxygen to remain separate rather than renewing their bonds and forming water once more. Both of these helped the team to harvest more hydrogen.

For the outdoor experiment, researchers set up a lens about the size of a house window to focus sunlight onto an experimental panel just a few inches across. Within that panel, the semiconductor catalyst was covered in a layer of water, bubbling with the hydrogen and oxygen gasses it separated.

The catalyst is made of indium gallium nitride nanostructures, grown onto a silicon surface. That semiconductor wafer captures the light, converting it into free electrons and holes—positively charged gaps left behind when electrons are liberated by the light. The nanostructures are peppered with nanoscale balls of metal, 1/2000th of a millimeter across, that use those electrons and holes to help direct the reaction.

The next challenges the team intends to tackle are to further improve the efficiency and to achieve ultrahigh purity hydrogen that can be directly fed into fuel cells.

Franco-Iberian H2 pipeline to be extended to Germany

Franco-Iberian H2 pipeline to be extended to Germany Photo: BH-Gas

The Franco-Iberian H2Med hydrogen pipeline, planned to run from Portugal to Marseille via Spain, will be extended to reach Germany, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed on Sunday.

“Acknowledging the differences of our national energy productions, we will work towards a common understanding and strategy roadmap aiming at the development of a large-scale hydrogen production, and build a resilient European hydrogen market based on a robust local production and necessary sustainable imports,” they said in the French-German declaration, which also covered agreements on matters other than energy.

The Spanish government on Monday welcomed Germany’s participation, with its ministry for the ecological transition saying that the H2Med project reflects Spain’s commitments to strengthening Europe’s energy security and showcases European ambitions towards climate neutrality.

“H2Med places Spain […] for the first time in history in a position to become a leading green energy hub from the Iberian Peninsula to central and northern Europe,” the ministry said.

The proposed hydrogen gas line will start in Portugal in the town of Celorico da Beira and connect to Zamora in Spain. The project will pick up again in Barcelona from where a submarine pipeline will lead to Marseille, and now to Germany. In between Zamora, north-west Spain, and Barcelona on the north-east coast, Spain will build two hydrogen routes to connect these cities and several hydrogen demand centres along the way.

In December 2022, gas TSOs of Spain, Portugal and France sent their proposals for the project to the European Commission, seeking funding under the EU call for Projects of Common Interest (PCI). Grid grid operators from Germany later sent a joint letter to the Commission to express support for the H2Med project and their desire to make it the backbone of the green hydrogen supply to a large part of Europe, the Spanish ministry for the ecological transition said.

According to Spain's government, the Celorico-Zamora (CelZa) section will cost around EUR 350 million (USD 381.4m), while the Barcelona-to-Marseille pipeline (BarMar) will require some EUR 2.5 billion of investments.

H2Med is expected to be operational in 2030. It will be capable of transporting 2 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year from Spain, which would be 10% of the EU’s entire hydrogen consumption, according to the Spanish government.

Vertex Hydrogen has signed a Heads of Terms offtake agreement for over 200 megawatts of low carbon hydrogen with Northwich-based Tata Chemicals Europe, one of Europe’s leading producers of sodium carbonate, salt, sodium bicarbonate and other products used in the manufacture of food and animal feed, glass, detergents, chemicals and several other industry applications.

Under the new offtake agreement, Vertex will supply TCE with hydrogen as the manufacturer continues to decarbonise its operations in the UK with a target of achieving “net zero” manufacturing by 2030.

In June 2022, Tata opened the UK’s first industrial scale carbon capture and usage plant. The GBP 20 million investments captures 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, the equivalent to taking over 20,000 cars off the road.
