    BAM: eerste bouwmachine met waterstofverbrandingsmotor
ANP Producties - Gisteren om 18:43
    © ANP

SoCalGas has recently begun construction of a first-of-its-kind advanced hydrogen generation system at SunLine Transit Agency in Thousand Palms in California. The project, called H2 SilverSTARS, will produce hydrogen from renewable natural gas and help fuel SunLine’s fleet of 17 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. At scale, this demonstration project could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate California’s climate and clean air goals by providing clean hydrogen at any location adjacent to a natural gas pipeline.

The demonstration will test STARS’ technology, which was developed at the Pacific Northwest National Lab. The technology uses a combustion free process, so that it produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional steam methane reforming process. Since the compact system is based on low-cost 12x1-inch, 3D-printed reactor disks and heat exchangers, it can be easily installed at fueling stations to help meet the demand while advancing climate and clean air goals.

After its installation, the first STARS system will produce up to 80 kilograms of clean hydrogen a day, that’s enough to fuel three of SunLine’s zero-emission buses per day.

Hydrogen Production Complex Opens in Pyeongtaek in Korea

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    31 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

A hydrogen production complex capable of supplying fuel for 410,000 hydrogen vehicles per year opened in Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province of South Korea on 27 July 2022. It is the first of its kind in the Korean capital region and the second in the nation after the facility in Changwon City, the capital of South Gyeongsang Province, which has been operating since the end of last year.

This complex will produce hydrogen by reforming natural gas (a process of pyrolyzing natural gas via steam) supplied from the Pyeongtaek LNG receiving base. From August, up to seven tons of hydrogen are slated for production per day (approximately 2,450 tons a year). This is the largest production amount in South Korea, capable of fully refueling 1,200 hydrogen cars a day (approximately 410,000 vehicles per year).

Gyeonggi Province expects that the Pyeongtaek complex will become a bridgehead in the hydrogen energy era. Following the construction of the hydrogen production complex, Gyeonggi Province and Pyeongtaek City plan to build a hydrogen transportation complex connected to hydrogen refueling stations near Pyeongtaek Port and to create a hydrogen city that uses hydrogen as its main energy source.

The Pyeongtaek complex was selected in December 2019 for the Hydrogen Production Complex Construction Project promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, entailing a total project cost of KRW 23 billion (USD 17.5 million): KRW 4.85 billion from the central government, KRW 3 billion from the provincial government, KRW 7 billion from the city government, and KRW 8.15 billion from the private sector.

Most of the 33 hydrogen refueling stations currently operating in the Korean capital region (20 in Gyeonggi Province, seven in Seoul, and six in Incheon) are supplied with hydrogen from remote locations such as Daesan, Ulsan, and Yeosu, which are more than 120 kilometers away on average. As the completion of this complex stands to substantially reduce hydrogen transportation costs, the provincial government expects the hydrogen supply price in the capital region area to drop as well.

    Published on :
    31 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

The Group and its partners have just launched the H2Sines project feasibility studies. This will access the feasibility of creating the first supply chain for liquified hydrogen, rallying Portugal to The Netherlands. This flagship project for Europe could accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy mobility. The purpose of the H2Sines project, with which ENGIE is closely involved, is to produce green hydrogen using water electrolysis in Portugal, a country of sunshine and wind, and transport it by sea to Rotterdam in Netherlands, a major European port, as close as possible to the requirements of heavy mobility stakeholders. It will start with feasibility studies during the summer 2022, which is due to last six months, alongside an IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) request. The studies should validate the relevance of the project and its production potential, currently estimated at 100 tonnes a day. Pending a positive consensus, the goal would be to start operating deliveries of liquified hydrogen by 2027.

The feasibility studies will include on building a specialised ship capable of transporting liquid hydrogen from the industrial port of Sines (Portugal) to Rotterdam. Given anticipated volumes and scales, it will be a one-of-a-kind worldwide project. Downstream the value chain, liquid hydrogen will be transported to clients via lorries, using specific trailers and reservoirs.

Anthony Veder, a specialist in the maritime transport of liquified gas, will be participating in designing, manufacturing, and operating the liquid hydrogen transport ship, which will be unique, given anticipated volumes and scales. Finally, Vopak, the largest independent operator of storage terminals in the world, will be in charge of the construction and operation of the terminals, as well as connecting them to the distribution network.

Supported by two major potential end-users, Airbus and Daimler, the project is perfectly in line with the European Union’s strategy of developing the use of green hydrogen to decarbonise heavy mobility across sea, road, and air transport.

World’s First Hydrogen Train Coradia iLint starts in Germany

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    31 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

Global leader in smart and sustainable mobility Alstom announced that the world’s first hydrogen train the Coradia iLint reached another historical milestone in Bremervörde in Lower Saxony in Germany. It is now used on the world premiere 100% hydrogen train route, in passenger operation. This regional train only emits steam and condensed water while operating with a low level of noise. The 14 vehicles with fuel cell propulsion belong to Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen. LNVG had already started looking for alternatives to diesel trains in 2012 and thus provided momentum for the development of the trains in Germany. Other project partners for this world debut are the Elbe-Weser railways and transport company EVB and the gas and engineering company Linde.

On the route between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude, 14 hydrogen-powered Alstom regional trains will be operated by evb on behalf of LNVG, gradually replacing 15 diesel trains. They will be fuelled daily and around the clock at the Linde hydrogen filling station. Thanks to a range of 1,000 kilometres, the Alstom multiple units of the Coradia iLint model, which are emission-free in operation, can run all day long on just one tank of hydrogen on the evb network. In September 2018, there had been a successful trial run of almost two years with two pre-series trains.

Alstom currently has four contracts for hydrogen fuel cell powered regional trains. Two are in Germany, the first for 14 Coradia iLint trains in the region of Lower Saxony, and the second for 27 Coradia iLint trains in the Frankfurt metropolitan area. The third contract comes from Italy where Alstom is building 6 Coradia Stream hydrogen trains in the region of Lombardy – with the option for 8 more, while the fourth is in France for 12 Coradia Polyvalent hydrogen trains shared across four different French regions. Furthermore, the Coradia iLint has been successfully tested in Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden to name a few.

The Coradia iLint is the world’s first passenger train to run on a hydrogen fuel cell that generates electrical energy for propulsion. This completely emission-free train is quiet and emits only water vapour and condensation. The Coradia iLint features several innovations: clean energy conversion, flexible energy storage in batteries, and intelligent management of motive power and available energy. Specifically developed for use on non-electrified lines, it enables clean, sustainable train operation while maintaining high performance. On evb’s network, the train travels at speeds of 80 to 120, with a maximum speed of 140 kilometres per hour. The iLint was designed by Alstom teams in Salzgitter (Germany), our centre of excellence for regional trains, and in Tarbes (France), centre of excellence for traction systems. The project benefits from the support of the German government and the development of the Coradia iLint was funded as part of the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) by the German government.

The Linde facility in Bremervörde contains sixty-four 500-bar high-pressure storage tanks with a total capacity of 1,800 kilograms, six hydrogen compressors and two fuel pumps. The use of hydrogen as a fuel for trains noticeably reduces the burden on the environment, as one kilogram of hydrogen replaces approximately 4.5 litres of diesel fuel. A later hydrogen production on site by means of electrolysis and regeneratively generated electricity is planned; corresponding expansion areas are available.

    1 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am

Leading electrified powertrain for Class 8 semi-trucks provider Hyliion Holdings has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a new hydrogen and fuel agnostic capable generator KARNO from GE Additive. The KARNO generator emerged out of GE’s long-running R&D investments in metal additive manufacturing across multiple industries and in areas such as generator thermal and performance design. Initial testing indicates the KARNO generator is expected to comply with all current and foreseeable emissions standards, specifically from CARB and EPA, even when utilizing conventional fuels.

The technology is expected to achieve a 20%+ efficiency improvement over today’s conventional generators and could be more efficient than most available fuel cells. These efficiency improvements should, in turn, enable fuel cost reductions and improved vehicle range. The technology should also provide for significant reductions in noise, vibration, moving parts and maintenance as compared to current combustion engines.

The KARNO power system will be capable of operating on over 20 different fuels including hydrogen, natural gas, propane, ammonia and conventional fuels. The technology uses heat to drive a sealed linear generator to produce electricity. The heat is produced by reacting fuels through flameless oxidation or other heat sources including renewables.

In late 2023, Hyliion plans to first release the Hypertruck ERX powertrain, which leverages a natural gas engine as the generator onboard. In the years following, Hyliion plans to release the Hypertruck KARNO, its fuel agnostic variant, as phase two in the Hyliion journey to a hydrogen-based future. Hyliion will also explore other adjacent markets to leverage this technology for cost savings and emissions reductions.

The Hypertruck is an electric powertrain that is recharged by an onboard generator for Class 8 commercial trucks that aims to provide lower operating costs, emissions reductions, and superior performance. The initial product variant to come to market is the Hypertruck ERXTM which leverages an onboard natural gas engine as the generator. The Hypertruck Fuel Agnostic will leverage the KARNO fuel agnostic generator to produce electricity. Hyliion also plans to release a Hypertruck Fuel Cell, which will only operate on hydrogen.
