BEIS Advances Equinor’s H2H Saltend Hydrogen Project in UK Strategic Research Institute Published on : 25 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am UK’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy announced that Equinor’s Hydrogen to Humber Saltend, H2H Saltend, production facility has been successfully progressed through Phase-2 of the Government’s cluster sequencing process. The selected projects will now proceed to the due diligence stage of the Phase-2 cluster sequencing process to allow them to connect to the East Coast Cluster’s CO2 infrastructure and be operational in the mid-2020s. Previously in Phase-1 of the cluster sequencing process, the East Coast Cluster, which connects the Humber and Teesside via CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, was selected to become one of the first two ‘CCUS clusters’ in the UK. Equinor’s bids for two new gas-fired power stations with carbon capture at Keadby, developed with SSE Thermal, and in Teesside, developed in partnership with bp, have also been successful. H2H Saltend is Equinor’s flagship project with a 600-megawatt low carbon hydrogen production plant, located at the Saltend Chemicals Park to the east of Hull. H2H Saltend is the kick-starter project for the wider Zero Carbon Humber scheme, a UKRI-supported partnership of 14 organisations committed to making the Humber the world’s first net zero industrial cluster by 2040.
3D Printed Nickel Catalysts for Hydrogen Electrolyziers Strategic Research Institute Published on : 25 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Water electrolysis is an effective method for producing hydrogen using renewable sources of energy. The development of cost-effective electrocatalysts for efficient and durable hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media is of vital importance to meet the increasing demand of hydrogen. The platinum group metals exhibit excellent activity in hydrogen evolution reaction, but their high cost hinders their widespread application. Recently, a research team led by Prof Tang Zhiyong and Associate Professor Zhang Jie from the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has proposed a novel photo-curing 3D-printing method to directly manufacture structured nickel-based electrocatalysts with unique gluten-like cubic structure and strong catalyst-substrate interaction. The photo-curing 3D printing has a much lower manufacturing cost than that of the selective laser melting 3D printing, and much higher degree of freedom and printing accuracy than that of direct ink writing 3D printing. Based on this technology, the researchers optimized printing paste composition and post-treatment process. The resultant electrode surface exhibits gluten-like cubic structure, where Ti exists in amorphous state with strong interaction with Ni, leading to increased active sites and improved electrolytic properties. The tailored nickel-based electrode exhibits excellent durability and a remarkable low overpotential, surpassing the commercial Pt/C catalyst and most of the state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the Ti doping decreases water dissociation energy barrier and hydrogen energy barrier, thus enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction. This work provides a novel strategy to precisely prepare the structured noble-metal-free catalysts with enhanced activity in alkaline water electrolysis. Moreover, the developed photo-curable 3D printing method provides an alternative option for manufacturing low-cost electrocatalysts with complex 3D architecture.
Hydrogen Experience Centre Building Arrives at Whitby Strategic Research Institute Published on : 25 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Whitby announced that the buildings have arrived for new Hydrogen Experience Centre. This structure is set to be established in Whitby, in the heart of Ellesmere Port, where wit has proposed to set up the UK’s Hydrogen Village programme from 2025. On the Hydrogen Experience Centre site’s reception and office areas provide space for public to learn about the hydrogen heating journey. And there’ll also be a room displaying examples of the gas appliances and technologies that would be available in a world with hydrogen heating, including state-of-the-art hydrogen-ready boilers. The centre will have some similarities to a Hydrogen Homes demonstration centre which opened in the North East of England last year. Those Hydrogen Homes, located in Gateshead, are two semi-detached show homes that were constructed by Cadent and partners, and display a variety of gas-fuelled appliances, from boilers, to fires and metres, all running on 100% hydrogen. Similar to the hydrogen homes, the establishment of the Hydrogen Experience Centre and the Hydrogen Village programme itself is expected to help increase knowledge of the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from heating, and the part that hydrogen can play in this.

New Faster Charging Hydrogen Fuel Cell Developed Strategic Research Institute Published on : 25 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Researchers from the University of Technology Sydney and Queensland University of Technology have developed a new method to improve solid-state hydrogen fuel cell charging times. Hydrogen is gaining significant attention as an efficient way to store 'green energy' from renewables such as wind and solar. Compressed gas is the most common form of hydrogen storage however it can also be stored in a liquid or solid state. However, a problem with metal hydride for hydrogen energy storage has been its low thermal conductivity, which leads to slow charging and discharging times. To address this, the researchers developed a new method to improve solid-state hydrogen charging and discharging times. The study: Design optimization of a magnesium-based metal hydride hydrogen energy storage system, was recently published in the journal Scientific Reports. The researchers developed a semi-cylindrical coil as an internal heat exchanger, which significantly improved heat transfer performance. The hydrogen charging time was reduced by 59% when using the new semi-cylindrical coil compared to a traditional helical coil heat exchanger. They are now working on the numerical simulation of the hydrogen desorption process, and continuing to improve absorption times. The semi-cylindrical coil heat exchanger will be further developed for this purpose. Finally, the researchers aim to develop a new design for hydrogen energy storage, which will combine other types of heat exchangers. They hope to also work with industry partners to investigate real tank performance based on the new heat exchanger. University of Technology Sydney’s Dr Saidul Islamsaid solid “Hydrogen storage, and in particular metal hydride, is attracting interest because it is safer, more compact, and lower cost than compressed gas or liquid, and it can reversibly absorb and release hydrogen. Metal hydride hydrogen storage technology is ideal for onsite hydrogen production from renewable electrolysis. It can store the hydrogen for extended periods and once needed, it can be converted as gas or a form of thermal or electric energy when converted through a fuel cell. Applications include hydrogen compressors, rechargeable batteries, heat pumps and heat storage, isotope separation and hydrogen purification. It can also be used to store hydrogen in space, to be used in satellites and other 'green' space technology.” First author Puchanee Larpruenrudee, a PhD candidate in the UTS School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, said faster heat removal from the solid fuel cell results in faster charging times. He said “Several internal heat exchangers have been designed for use with metal hydride hydrogen storage. These include straight tubes, helical coil or spiral tubes, U-shape tubes, and fins. Using a helical coil significantly improves heat and mass transfer inside the storage. This is due to the secondary circulation and having more surface area for heat removal from the metal hydride powder to the cooling fluid. Our study further developed a helical coil to increase heat transfer performance."

UNIDO Promotes Hydrogen Economy as Pan African Trade Strategic Research Institute Published on : 25 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Within the framework of the WTO Eight Global Review of Aid for Trade, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization has held two thematic sessions, one on Advancing the Green Hydrogen Economy, with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development BMZ, and another on the Pan African trade as an engine for local economic growth and prosperity with the Arab Republic of Egypt and Madagascar as well as with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The first session shared experiences for the accelerated up-take of green hydrogen and discussed related opportunities and challenges for industrial development. The first session included highly regarded experts from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development BMZ, the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board and the Office Chérifien des Phosphates OCP Group who also discussed cost constraints brought by the procurement of green hydrogen, thereby highlighting the need for cost scalability especially considering the cost of transportation (seen as re-conversion cost). The second session expounded on the common vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), exploring trading challenges and how to address them.
TVS Motors Files Patents for Hydrogen Scooter iQube Strategic Research Institute Published on : 25 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am India’s leading 2 wheelher manufacturer TVS Motors has filed patents for the iQube, an electric scooter that would use a hydrogen fuel cell to generate electricity. The initial patent images of the TVS' hydrogen scooter suggest that it stores the hydrogen in two canisters placed inside the front apron, clamped to the front downtube of the frame. This placement is likely done to make these canisters easily detachable for refuelling. These units are attached to the pipework, and there is also a filler nozzle located near the headlight of the bike. Hydrogen and oxygen gases are supplied into either ends of the cell and there is an electrode at either end of the cell, a cathode receives oxygen and an anode receives hydrogen. Between the two electrodes is a membrane which allows only positively-charged hydrogen ions protons to pass through it, which means the remaining electrons in the anode can only reach the cathode via an external circuit. This creates the flow of electricity, and when the electrons reach the cathode they combine with the protons and oxygen to create water. In the case of a vehicle, the only thing expelled from the fuel cell is the aforementioned water.
Eindelijk!
