LG Chem to Produce & Run Naphtha Cracking Center Plant on Hydrogen

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    28 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

LG Chem plans to produce hydrogen as a key component of its long-term 2050 Net Zero corporate sustainability goal. Aligned with this goal, South Korea’s largest chemical company said it would establish a plant in Daesan in Korea with the capacity to produce 50,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually by the second quarter in 2024. The new plant employs technology which converts methane to hydrogen by creating a chemical reaction under high-temperature steam. Hydrogen will be made from methane off-gases generated by the naphtha cracking center in the process of producing feed-stocks. This hydrogen will then be depolymerized under high-temperature to be used as fuel again.

Construction of LG Chem’s hydrogen plant is expected to commence in the first half of 2023 and scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2024. Once fully operational, LG Chem expects the plant to reduce carbon emissions by 140,000 tonnes annually by replacing methane used in the NCC process with high-purity hydrogen, which does not create carbon dioxide during combustion.

The petrochemical industry produces base chemicals such as ethylene, propylene and buta-diene which are made by breaking down naphtha at high temperatures. Methane is commonly used as a heat source for the NCC process which generates a large amount of carbon emis-sions.

    Published on :
    29 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

Airbus and Linde have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work on the development of hydrogen infrastructure at airports worldwide. The agreement follows a cooperation agreement signed in Singapore in February and covers collaboration on global supply chains for hydrogen, from production to airport storage, including the integration of refuelling into normal ground handling operations. Both companies will define and launch pilot projects at several airports from early 2023 onwards. In addition, Airbus and Linde will analyse the potential of Power-to-Liquid fuels, a type of Sustainable Aviation Fuel made from the synthetically produced liquid hydrocarbon through the conversion of renewable electricity.

The use of hydrogen to power future aircraft is not only expected to significantly reduce aircraft emissions in the air, but could also help decarbonise air transport activities on the ground. In 2020 Airbus launched the Hydrogen Hub at Airports programme to jumpstart research into infrastructure requirements and low-carbon airport operations, across the entire value chain. To date agreements have been signed with partners and airports in France, Italy, South Korea, Japan and Singapore.

The first ZEROe concept aircraft were unveiled in 2020, and development of the corresponding technology bricks is now underway in a global R&T network focused on developing the hydrogen technology for future commercial aircraft.

    29 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

Air Liquide & Siemens Energy have announced the creation of a joint venture dedicated to the series production of industrial scale renewable hydrogen electrolyzers in Europe. Air Liquide will take 25.1% & Siemens Energy will hold 74.9% of the joint venture, which creation remains subject to approval of the competent authorities. This joint venture will be headquartered in Berlin. With two of the global leading companies in their field combining their expertise, this Franco-German partnership will enable the emergence of a sustainable hydrogen economy in Europe and foster a European ecosystem for electrolysis and hydrogen technology. Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2023 and ramp-up to an annual production capacity of three gigawatts by 2025.

The joint venture multi-gigawatt factory that produces electrolysis modules would be also located in the German capital, as announced earlier this year. This factory will supply stacks to both Groups for their respective broad range of customers and to serve the rapidly growing market. Based on proton exchange membrane (electrolysis technology, these stacks will feature a high degree of efficiency and are ideally suited to harvest volatile renewable energy. In addition, Air Liquide and Siemens Energy have agreed to dedicate R&D capacities to the co-development of the next generation of electrolyzer technologies within the framework of the partnership.

The strategic partnership will benefit from a portfolio of hydrogen projects combining both Air Liquide and Siemens Energy’s pipelines, targeting large industrial-scale hydrogen projects in collaboration with customers. This will create a solid basis for the required rapid ramp-up of electrolysis capacities and thus is expected to make competitive renewable hydrogen available sooner. One of the first projects is the Air Liquide Normand’Hy electrolyzer project, with a capacity of 200 MW expected in the first phase, located in Normandy in France. The assembly of the electrolyzer systems for this project is planned to be made in France.

Kabinet stelt 750 miljoen beschikbaar voor bouw waterstofnet
ANP Producties - Gisteren om 16:20
    © ANP

Hanwha Solutions Supplies Hydrogen Tanks to Shell

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    01 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

Hanwha Solutions has joined Shell's efforts to build extensive hydrogen refueling infrastructure in California. Supplying Shell with high-pressure hydrogen tanks for transport within its network of stations, Hanwha will help accelerate the Golden State's energy transition and decarbonizing efforts. Hanwha Solutions' hydrogen tank manufacturing subsidiary, Hanwha Cimarron, said it finalized a Purchase Order with Shell to provide Type IV high-pressure hydrogen tank called Neptune. The carbon fiber-reinforced, 2,000 litre capacity vessels can store hydrogen at a pressure of 517 bar, the largest pressure level among Type IV tank.

Strength of Neptune comes from Anti-buckling technology, which can fully extract hydrogen without causing internal damage. Given that most Type IV high-pressure tanks can shrink easily when stored fully, they often have one-tenth of storage capacity in reserve. Receiving certificates from the Department of Transportation, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and other state agencies, Neptune has proved its strength for transportation and storage usage.

Hanwha Cimarron's supply of hydrogen tanks will support Shell's efforts to extend its hydrogen refueling network across California. The state is emerging as a key hydrogen hub in the US, with 52 out of 66 refueling stations in the US operating there. According to research firm MarketsandMarkets, the global hydrogen energy storage market is projected to reach 119.2 billion by 2027 and North America will constitute about 13 percent of the global market volume.

Acquired by Hanwha Solutions in December 2020, Hanwha Cimarron, formerly known as Cimarron Composites, founded by NASA scientist Tom Delay, is seeking to scale up its business. Its USD 51 million investment plan to build a high-pressure tank manufacturing facility in Opelika, Alabama, is well underway. When the construction is complete later this year, Opelika factory can produce up to 4,000 high-pressure tanks annually.

Daimler Truck Tests Fuel-Cell Truck with Liquid Hydrogen

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    04 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

Daimler Truck has reached its next milestone on the road to sustainable transportation also with hydrogen-based drives. Since last year, a Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck fuel-cell prototype has been undergoing intensive testing both on the in-house test track and on public roads. Daimler Truck is now putting another prototype into operation to test the use of liquid hydrogen. A newly installed prototype filling station at the development and testing centre in Wörth enables the refuelling with liquid hydrogen.

Recently, Daimler Truck celebrated the first successful liquid hydrogen refuelling of the truck together with Air Liquide. During the refuelling process, cryogenic liquid hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius is filled into two 40 kg tanks mounted on either side of the chassis. Thanks to the particularly good insulation of the vehicle tanks, the hydrogen can be kept at temperature for a sufficiently long time without active cooling. Daimler Truck prefers liquid hydrogen in the development of hydrogen-based drives. In this aggregate state the energy carrier has a significantly higher energy density in relation to volume compared to gaseous hydrogen. As a result, more hydrogen can be carried, which significantly increases the range and enables comparable performance of the vehicle with that of a conventional diesel truck.

The development objective of the series-ready GenH2 Truck is a range of up to 1,000 kilometres and more. This makes the truck suitable for flexible and demanding applications, especially in the important segment of heavy-duty long-haul transport. The start of series production for hydrogen-based trucks is planned for the second half of the decade.

At the same time, Daimler Truck is working together with Linde on the development of a new process for handling liquid hydrogen. Among other things, this innovative approach enables even higher storage density and easier refuelling compared to LH2. The companies plan for the first refuelling of a prototype vehicle at a pilot station in Germany in 2023. Daimler Truck and its partners are planning for a high level of transparency and openness around the relevant interfaces of the jointly developed sLH2 technology. The goal is to collaborate with other companies and associations as possible to develop their own refuelling and vehicle technologies that apply the new liquid-hydrogen standard and thereby establish a global mass market for the new process.

When it comes to infrastructure for hydrogen filling stations along important transport routes in Europe, Daimler Truck is planning to work together with the companies Shell, BP and TotalEnergies. Daimler Truck is also a shareholder in hydrogen filling station operator H2 MOBILITY Deutschland. In addition, Daimler Truck, IVECO, Linde, OMV, Shell, TotalEnergies and the Volvo Group have committed to work together to help create the conditions for the mass-market roll-out of hydrogen trucks in Europe as part of the H2Accelerate (H2A) interest group.

Developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery cells for specialist markets AMTE Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with advanced powertrain developer Viritech to support the development of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. The MoU paves the way for the parties to establish an agreement to supply AMTE Power’s Ultra High Power cells for use in Viritech’s battery packs for high-performance FCEV projects, including heavy goods vehicles, light commercial vehicles, marine, aerospace, and distributed power applications and Viritech’s hypercar project, Apricale.

Viritech’s innovative powertrain combines hydrogen fuel cells with high-performance lithium-ion cells. The technology is intended to provide an additional power boost on ignition, acceleration and when driving on a gradient, as well as enabling smaller, more lightweight battery systems that reduce weight compromises. Charging for the battery cells can be generated through the operation of the fuel cell and regenerative braking.

AMTE Power’s differentiated UHP lithium-ion cell has been designed to target the high power automotive market. With fully-owned intellectual property rights for the product, AMTE Power is in advanced stages of development for the UHP, which is currently going through scale-up and testing trials at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre

The development of hydrogen fuel cell technology is believed to be critical to the development of zero-emission vehicles. An alternative to fully electric vehicles, fuel cells mitigate challenges around weight and cell charge times in high power and performance vehicles compared to battery power alone. The Advanced Propulsion Centre UK forecasts that global FCEV markets will experience rapid expansion as economies move away from fossil fuels, with sales anticipated to exceed 1 million vehicles by 2030 and 10 million vehicles by 2040.

GKN Hydrogen & SoCalGas will work with the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory to highlight the technologies needed to reach carbon neutrality and accelerate clean fuel initiatives. The companies will collaborate on an innovative green hydrogen storage solution. GKN Hydrogen’s HY2MEGA can enable safe, long duration clean energy storage without the need for compression. At scale, this combined technology could provide resilient power in case of widespread outages.

Two HY2MEGA hydrogen storage subsystems will connect to an electrolyzer and fuel cell at the ARIES facility on NREL’s Flatirons Campus near Boulder, Colorado. The electrolyzer will use renewable sources and produce green hydrogen to be stored in the HY2MEGA. The HY2MEGA stores the hydrogen in a solid state, under low pressure in a compact footprint. According to GKN Hydrogen, it is one of the safest ways to store hydrogen. The fuel cell will then convert the green hydrogen to produce renewable electricity. The two HY2MEGA’s will add an additional 500 kgs of hydrogen storage on site. The three-year project is set to launch at the end of this year.

The US Department of Energy provided USD 1.7 million in funding to deploy GKN Hydrogen’s technology. SoCalGas provided USD 400,000 of Research, Development, and Demonstration funding to the project. We’ll assist and identify potential commercial use cases.

Italian Researchers Use Steel Slag as Catalyst for Photosynthesis

    Published on :
    06 Jul, 2022, 6:06 am

One of the main concerns related to environmental impact of human activity is the carbon dioxide emission, which is responsible for the global warming. In the short term, the current fossil-based technologies which are the primary cause of CO2 production are unlikely to be replaced by more sustainable one. To achieve the goal of climate neutrality by 2050, the World Community has given a strong incentive to renewable energies, but the search for processes aiming at capturing and valorizing carbon dioxide still remains of crucial importance. In this context, photo catalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O using solar energy, well-known as artificial photosynthesis, is considered one of the most elegant and investigated strategies. As a result, solar fuels and high-value chemicals such as formic acid, methane and methanol can be obtained. Of special interest is the production of formic acid, which is not only a valuable chemical (i.e. preservative and antibacterial agent), but also considered a hydrogen storage compound with potential application in fuel cells, being prompt to release H2 by thermal decomposition. Since CO2 is regenerated during this latter pathway, the concentration of the greenhouse gas is not reduced in the overall process.

Researchers from Italian CNR-ICCOM-SS Bari’s Caterina Fusco, Angelo Nacci & Lucia D’Accolti, University of Bari’s Chemistry Department Michele Casiello, Pasquale Pisani, Antonio Monopoli, Angelo Nacci & Lucia D’Accolti, CNR-NANOTEC-SS Bari’s Fiorenza Fanelli, CNR-ICCOM’s Werner Oberhauser and Acciaierie d’Italia’s Rosella Attrotto in a research paper have unveiled possibilities of steel slag as low-cost catalyst for artificial photosynthesis to convert CO2 and water into hydrogen and methanol.

Photo reduction of CO2 with sunlight to produce solar fuels, also named artificial photosynthesis, is considered one of the most attractive strategies to face the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases and achieving climate neutrality. Following an approach in line with the principles of the circular economy, the low-cost catalytic system based on an industrial by-product such as steel slag was assessed, which was properly modified with nanostructured palladium on its surface in order to make it capable of promoting the conversion of CO2 into methanol and hydrogen through a two-stage process of photo reduction and thermal conversion having formic acid as the intermediate. Notably, for the first time in the literature steel slag is used as photo reduction catalyst.

Pristine steel slag, supplied by AcciaieriedItalia’s Taranto Plant, consists of two crystalline phases, namely CaAl2O413 and Fe3O414 in a 65 and 35 ratio respectively, based on a Rietveld profile refinement. Nanostructured palladium was deposited onto the slag by a wet impregnation method15 affording the nanocomposite Pd@slag labelled as catalyst.

In conclusion, these preliminary studies demonstrate that a catalyst material composed by steel slag decorated with Pd structured can convert CO2 and water into methanol and hydrogen via formic acid as intermediate, through a two-step reaction involving a photochemical and thermal reaction. Steel slag has been involved for the first time in the photo reduction of CO2, most probably by virtue of the iron impurities, while Palladium account for the thermal conversion of formic acid into hydrogen and methanol.

This process is important not only for matching the Circular Economy principles making use of wastes as both reagents CO2 and catalysts slag, but also for producing in high selectivity an attractive storage medium such as formic acid. In fact, although HCOOH contains only 4.4% hydrogen by mass, it is a precious intermediate because is liquid at room temperature and therefore easy to handle and transport, commercially available on a large scale, and the by-product of H2 release, carbon dioxide, can be trapped and either recycled or used as a C1 source for other chemicals. Studies are in progress to ascertain the exact mechanism with which palladium converts formic acid into methanol and hydrogen.

Gasgrid Finland is to accelerate the development of Finland’s national hydrogen infrastructure as well as the infrastructure enabling a regional hydrogen market to support development of a hydrogen economy in Finland. The responsibility for development will allow Gasgrid Finland to fast track the development it has already started and projects already underway such as the Nordic Hydrogen Route – Bothnian Bay. The Nordic Hydrogen Route is a cross-border project between Finland and Sweden aimed at building a network of pipelines in the Bothnia Bay region. To promote the development of a hydrogen economy, Gasgrid Finland has additionally launched a demonstration project on hydrogen transmission aimed at utilising Kemira’s by-product hydrogen at Ovako’s Imatra mill. The project will generate new know-how and conditions to serve hydrogen economy development more broadly.

Due to recent changes in the operating environment, a tighter energy and security policy situation as well as the aims of the European Commission’s REPowerEU plan to improve Europe’s energy self-sufficiency, it has become necessary to fast forward the development of Finland’s new national and cross-border energy infrastructure. Besides this, Finland’s very considerable renewable energy resources could enable the emergence and development of new European-scale industries in Finland based on competitive electricity, thereby creating new export and production potential.

The European Commission’s REPowerEU plan means ambitions to increase the amount of renewable energy and hydrogen have risen considerably compared to the EU’s earlier ambitions and the timespan has also been tightened to respond to the changed situation. The RepowerEU decision will increase the prerequisites for a hydrogen economy on a fast schedule. It is crucial to fast forward the development of the energy infrastructure to enable change and to reach these ambitions. This is why the Finnish Government has decided to mandate Gasgrid Finland to promote development of the national hydrogen infrastructure, international infrastructure cooperation and the hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea Region as soon as possible.
