Shell is First Customer of Hydrogen Pipeline Rotterdam Port

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

Shell is the first company to sign an agreement to use HyTransPortRTM. This is the hydrogen pipeline in the port of Rotterdam that Gasunie is laying in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam Authority from the Maasvlakte to Pernis in order to make the industry in the port more sustainable.

Hydrogen must become the fossil-free replacement for fuels and raw materials where CO2 is released during production or use. Shell becomes the pipeline’s first customer. Holland Hydrogen I, the electrolyser that Shell is going to build at the Conversion Park on the Maasvlakte, will be connected to the pipeline. The hydrogen is transported from the conversion park to Pernis via the HyTransPortRTM pipeline. The hydrogen pipeline will be in use at the end of 2024, early 2025. In time, the pipeline will be connected to the national and international hydrogen network.

'The contract with Shell is an important step. Shell has great ambitions in the field of hydrogen. Infrastructure such as HyTransPort is crucial for the hydrogen economy in the port of Rotterdam to get off the ground. This is a clear sign that steps are being taken to make the port of Rotterdam more sustainable,' said Jeroen Steens, Director Commercial Delivery at the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

In the first half of 2022, Shell will take the final investment decision for the Holland Hydrogen I electrolyser on the Second Maasvlakte. The final investment decision for the HyTransPortRTM hydrogen pipeline will then also be taken around that time.

The hydrogen pipeline will be laid over a route of 32 kilometers. The pipe will have a diameter of 24 inches (61cm). The switch from fossil fuels and raw materials to CO2-free hydrogen should result in a first significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Hydrogen is used, among other things, as an energy carrier for industrial processes where electrification cannot meet the requirements, such as high temperature processes in the petrochemical industry, and as a raw material for chemical products. 'As part of the future energy mix, sustainable hydrogen will make an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in industry,' says Helmie Botter, Business Development manager for hydrogen at Gasunie.

This first phase of the transport pipeline is an important link for the sustainable hydrogen economy in the Netherlands and Northwest Europe. In time, HyTransPortRTM will connect to the national and international hydrogen transport system.

Unitrove Gets Grant to Develop Hydrogen Bunkering Facility

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    22 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

The creator of the world’s first liquid hydrogen bunkering facility for fuelling zero-emission ships has won a UK Government grant to develop a unit ready for rapid deployment to ports around the world. Steven Lua, CEO of Unitrove Innovation, part of the Unitrove Group, said the £30,000 Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG), awarded by the Department for Transport in partnership with Connected Places Catapult, would be used to help further develop its commercial version of the small-scale portable facility, which can help reduce emissions of one of the most polluting forms of transport.

The Leicestershire-based clean-tech company unveiled the unit at COP26 in Glasgow last November.

Steven said the facility was vital to fuel an international shipping industry that accounts for around one billion tonnes of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and contributes to around 400,000 premature deaths and 14 million cases of childhood asthma every year due to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), sulphur oxides (SO?), and nitrogen oxides (NO?) that arise from ship smokestacks*.

“The award will help us to further develop our liquid hydrogen bunkering facility as we move towards commercialisation,” said Steven. “This is fantastic validation for our project and it also opens up opportunities for increased collaboration as we work towards reducing emissions, which are causing so much damage to our planet.

“We need collaboration across the entire energy industry as there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We need to embrace multiple renewable and clean energy solutions to achieve our net-zero ambitions and we need real investment in infrastructure to develop affordable, reliable, sustainable energy in the future.”

The TRIG programme was launched by the Department for Transport in 2014 to foster research and innovation in the sector. This year’s TRIG is the largest ever, with over 50 awards spanning different areas including maritime decarbonisation and the future of freight.

Steven said liquid hydrogen as a commercial fuel was relatively unexplored as an option – but that it had great potential for many uses, including plugging the gap that electric and compressed hydrogen cannot fill.

HyNet is the UK's leading low carbon industrial cluster, spanning North West England and North Wales. From the mid-2020's, low carbon hydrogen will be produced by the recently formed Vertex Hydrogen. By 2030, industry in the region will have reduced their carbon dioxide emissions by a total of 10 million tonnes every year - a quarter of the region's entire emissions - the equivalent of taking four million cars off the road. Government has selected HyNet to fast track the removal of carbon emissions from industry as a Track 1 decarbonisation industrial cluster.

Organisations already signed up to HyNet include:

Kelloggs, which has manufacturing facilities in both Manchester and Wrexham, producing the nations favourite cereals, like Cornflakes, Rice Krispies and Coco-Pops

Jaguar Land Rover, which produces the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport models at its site in Halewood, near Liverpool, employing over 3,000 people

PepsiCo in Skelmersdale, where it produces Walkers Crisps and Monster Munch

Encirc, near Ellesmere Port, which produces 2.5 billion glass bottles each year for brands such as Budweiser, Baileys, Jameson and Pataks

Novelis in Warrington, which operates one of Europe's largest aluminium can recycling plants with an annual recycling capacity of 195,000 tonnes

Kraft-Heinz in Wigan, Europe's largest food processing facility, producing in excess of 1.3 billion cans of food annually, including Heinz Beanz, soups and pastas

Essity, a leading hygiene and health company with four manufacturing sites in the North West and North Wales, producing household brand names including Plenty and Cushelle

Pilkington Glass, a leading manufacturer of flat glass for the architectural market from its sites in St Helens

Each company has signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding with the intent of receiving a future network connection and supply of hydrogen through the HyNet infrastructure. Demonstrations of switching from the fossil fuel, natural gas, to hydrogen within HyNet have already taken place at Pilkington Glass and Unilever, both located in Liverpool City Region. Further trials, which have received initial support from Government, are planned over the next two years across a wide range of industrial sectors.

Can Hydrogen Indirectly be 11 Times Worse than CO2 Emissions

Hydrogen will be one of humanity’s key weapons in the war against carbon dioxide emissions, but it must be treated with care. New reports show how fugitive hydrogen emissions can indirectly produce warming effects 11 times worse than those of CO2.

Hydrogen can be used as a clean energy carrier, and running it through a fuel cell to produce electricity produces nothing but water as a by-product. It carries far more energy for a given weight than lithium batteries, and it’s faster to refill a tank than to charge a battery, so hydrogen is viewed as a very promising green option in several hard-to-decarbonize applications where batteries won’t cut the mustard for example, aviation, shipping and long-haul trucking. But when it’s released directly into the atmosphere, hydrogen itself can interact with other gases and vapors in the air to produce powerful warming effects. Indeed, a new UK Government study has put these interactions under the microscope and determined that hydrogen’s Global Warming Potential is about twice as bad as previously understood; over a 100-year time period, a tonne of hydrogen in the atmosphere will warm the Earth some 11 times more than a tonne of CO2, with an uncertainty of ± 5.

One way is by extending the lifetime of atmospheric methane. Hydrogen reacts with the same tropospheric oxidants that “clean up” methane emissions. Methane is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas, causing some 80 times more warming than an equivalent weight of CO2 over the first 20 years. But hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere clean it up relatively quickly, while CO2 remains in the air for thousands of years, so CO2 is worse in the long run.
