Acerinox review of stainless steel market in 2012

The overall situation is determined by strong domestic competition that has kept prices low despite improvements in global consumption.

Despite the difficult situation experienced in 2012, with economic uncertainties and the crisis in the Eurozone, the stainless steel market keeps showing its strength and world production has been 35.4 million tonne, 5.4% higher than in 2011, according to provisional data from the ISSF.

After two years of strong growth in world production, 26.4% in 2010 and 8.1% in 2011, far above the compound annual growth rate of the last 62 years (5.9%), 2012 has been a year for consolidation of this growth.

It should be noted that world production has moved increasingly to Asia, where 70% of the stainless steel in the world is produced and more specifically towards China, which contributes with 46%.

The strong growth in China has changed the traditional exports flows. This fact, in conjunction with the macroeconomic uncertainty and the drop of the Nickel price, has negatively impacted stainless steel prices.

In consumption, Europe has been affected by the lack of liquidity in the system and the low levels of confidence in the economy, which has resulted in a reduction of 2.5% of flat products, which is even more prevalent in Southern European countries.

Apparent consumption of stainless steel flat products in the United States increased again, by 8.8%, which consolidates the strong growth of this market in years 2010 (+32.3%) and 2012 (+28.9%).

The South African market keeps showing signs of strength and the apparent consumption of stainless steel has increased by 8% in 2012, which results in an accumulated growth of 72% for the last four years.

Apparent consumption in Asia has increased by 2.5% highlighted by India with 6.9% and China with 4.2%, while Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have decreased.

The world macroeconomic uncertainty and its impact on consumption have caused raw materials prices to show a downward trend in 2012, despite production increases, falling back to levels not seen since 2009.

The start-up of new nickel production plants and the decline in consumption have maintained a positive supply and demand balance. At the end of the year, the estimated stock (LME and producers) was 14 weeks of consumption.

China has become the first producer of nickel in the world thanks to its production of nickel pig iron.

    CSIRO develops green nickel process

TCE Today reported that Australia’s national science agency has started testing a new environmentally friendly process which it claims could revolutionize the world’s nickel mining industry.

The process was developed by the Sydney based Direct Nickel and is being put through its paces by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization at a AUD 3.5 million pilot plant in Perth. It claims that the new technique could deliver a huge boost to the global nickel industry by opening up millions of tonne of untapped nickel laterite reserves.

Direct Nickel CEO Mr Russell Denbury said that "Many of these reserves remain untapped due to the difficulty and expense of extracting the nickel. Technical difficulties and the high costs of existing processing methods are massive and continuing roadblocks. There is a desperate need for a solution to the laterite processing problem that is threatening world supply. Other forms of nickel reserves such as sulphides are running out and there are few new discoveries."

He explains that traditional laterite processing techniques use large quantities of sulphuric acid at high temperatures and pressures. However this generates large amounts of chemical waste, forcing companies to pay for its treatment and disposal. This drives up costs making some deposits uneconomical to exploit.

According to Mr Dave Robinson, leader of mineral processing research at CSIRO the new process uses nitric rather than sulphuric acid over 95% of which can be recycled and reused. This makes it more environmentally friendly and at the same time lowers its cost. It uses only a few kilogrammes of nitric acid per ton of laterite compared to at least 500 kg of sulphuric acid per tonne.

He said that "This process has the potential to revolutionize the global industry. Australia has an abundance of nickel laterites so it would provide a significant boost to our economy. We have been working in partnership with Direct Nickel for over three years and the pilot plant is an important step in understanding the process. It will provide the engineering data to validate our technical and economic predictions."

Analysis on global stainless steel flats market for February 2013

    Introduction
In the ten days before Chinese Spring Festival, nickel prices edged up unexpectedly, which stirred up China’s sluggish of stainless steel prices for continuous weeks. However, this price hike in nickel market was mainly for the sake of speculation.

In January, stainless steel mills in America up regulated the basic prices successfully, while the increasing supplies and the depressed demands detered the large increments in prices.

    I Western Europe
Steel Mills Place Price Hike on Seasonal Stockpiling
In January, stainless steel flats demands from downstream users and traders are very limited and the prices for CR sheet averaged at 1095 Euro per tonne (US$1479 per tonne), flat from last December, while in the same period last year, stainless steel basic prices increased by 35 Euro per tonne due to the booming of stockpile.

    II America
Increasing Stainless Steel Supply to Hold-up Price Rebounce
In January, traders’ stainless steel inventory recorded new high for the past 12 months and the basic prices for 304 CR sheet (2mm/2B) increased only 60 cents per pound because of the oversupply.
The high inventory accumulated in last December made traders less interested in stockpiling in February and March 2013, and the oversupply will continuously impose restrictions on the basic prices.

    III Asia
Chinese Steel Mills Raise Prices to Answer Pickup in Nickel Prices
In the first week of February 2013, prices for 304/2B CR stainless steel increased to 18,400 yuan per tonne (US$2,922 per tonne, including VAT), up 400 per tonne averagely over the prices in the trading market in January.

Taiyuan Iron&Steel (Group) Co Ltd China’s largest stainless steel producer announced to hike 304 CR coil quotations to 19,500 per tonne with delivery at the end of January. If it works, stainless steel prices in the trading market may be pushed up to 18,800 to 18,900 per tonne.

Global nickel oversupply set to increase in 2013 - INSG

Lisbon based International Nickel Study Group forecast on Thursday that growth in global production of primary nickel this year is set to outpace consumption growth, increasing the surplus in the global market.

Mr Sven Tollin chief statistician at the INSG, an influential intergovernmental organisation told an industry conference that global primary nickel output is expected to rise 5.7% in 2013 to 1.849 million tonnes, driven by output growth in Asia.

According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, China produced 105,712 tonnes of nickel in the first two months of the year, up 165.8% on the year.

He said that global nickel consumption is forecast to rise 5.6% to 1.7552 million tonnes. That will create a market surplus of 93,800 tonnes, up 7% from last year's 87,700 tonnes.

Another year of supply surplus could put pressure on nickel prices, which have fallen for two straight years before 2013.

Three month nickel on the London Metal Exchange traded up 0.6 percent at USD 16,902 a tonne on Thursday. The metal, used in producing stainless steel, has dropped 1.5% so far this year, but has outperformed other base metals.

Nickel futures down on overseas trends and subdued demand

Economic Times reported that amid a weak trend in the global markets and subdued domestic demand, nickel prices dropped 0.67% to INR 889.90 per kg in futures trade today as speculators reduced their positions.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, nickel for delivery in April dropped by INR 4 or 0.67% to INR 889.90 per kg in a business turnover of 716 lots.

The metal for delivery in May also fell by INR 6.10 or 0.67% to INR 898.20 per kg in a turnover of 102 lots.

In the global market, nickel dropped 1.7% to USD 16,380 a tonne at the London Metal Exchange.

Analysts said that the fall in nickel prices at futures trade was mostly in tandem with a weakening trend in the base metals at the LME as record unemployment in Europe added to concern that demand will weaken amid signs of slowing growth in China.
