Copper and Nickel rises on increased demand

Indian Express reported that Copper and nickel prices rose by INR 2 per kg each on the non ferrous metal market today on increased demand from consuming industries and a firming trend at the London Metal Exchange.

Traders said the rise in select base metal prices was mostly attributed to rising demand from consuming industries and a firming trend at the London Metal Exchange.

Meanwhile, copper for delivery in three months climbed 0.5% to USD 7,955.25 a tonne at the LME.

In the national capital, copper mixed scrap and nickel (4x4) rose by INR 2 each INR 417 and INR 1,049-1,052 per kg respectively.

Cullen Resources shares jump on possible nickel potential at Mt Eureka

Cullen Resources shares jumped as it plans airborne electromagnetic survey this quarter to test for nickel sulphide targets at the Mt Eureka project in Western Australia. Shares were up almost 23% at USD 0.027 a share.

Its prospects for drilling success were boosted on back of recent discovery of nickel sulphides by Rox Resources at Fisher East with ultramafics there interpreted to extend into Cullen's grounds.

One of the largest VTEM anomalies outlined by Rox's geophysical survey on the Mt Fisher East project area appears to extend into Cullen's ELA53/1637 tenement and will be an immediate target upon tenement granting.

An airborne electromagnetic survey is scheduled to identify potential nickel sulphide targets across some 10 kilometres of untested stratigraphy in the south of Cullen's tenement.

Appraisal of previous nickel sulphide exploration at Mt Eureka by WMC/BHP Billiton has highlighted 3 electromagnetic conductors as priority drill targets.

All the 3 conductors lie in the northern part of the Mt Eureka Greenstone belt and there are other significant nickel anomalies and prospects in Cullen's tenure including AK47 at 0.2 metres at 1.93% Ni from 140 metres, and 95MER003 at 11 metres at 0.86% Ni.

Cullen Resources has 100% ownership of a large area of about 650 square kilometres of approved tenure via E53/1299, 1300, 1209 and PLs 53/1264, 1265 and applications for ELAs 53/1630, 1635, and 1637 in the Mt Eureka Greenstone Belt in the North Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, which includes several targets for nickel sulphides.

South African ferrochrome output cuts expected to boost prices

Reuters reported that ferrochrome production cuts in South Africa are likely to persist into the second quarter, boosting prices at a time of weak demand

South Africa is the world's second-biggest producer of the alloy used to make stainless steel, but several companies have shut down operations in recent weeks to help power utility Eskom to manage the country's tight electricity supply.

The businesses that have cut production include International Ferro Metals and Hernic Ferrochrome, along with a subsidiary of Indian steelmaker TATA Steel and a joint venture between South African Merafe Resources and London-listed Xstrata.

Under deals with Eskom, companies agree to suspend production temporarily, allowing the utility to buy back the energy that would have been used by the furnaces and feed it back to its starved electricity grid.

Traders estimate that, between December 2012 and March this year, the buyback arrangement will remove about 350,000 tonnes of ferrochrome from a market that has been struggling with weak demand and an oversupplied stainless steel sector.

Prices are expected to be supported by further production cuts in the second quarter as South Africa enters a colder period in which electricity demand is stronger.

One Europe-based trader said that "The rumours are ... that the cutbacks will have to continue into Q2. Nothing has been said at the moment, but demand is higher for electricity in Q2 than in Q1 and the maintenance work (on Eskom's ageing power stations) still hasn't taken place.”

He added that "The concern is that the supply cuts will be rolled over and that is bound to continue to tighten the (ferrochrome) market. Prices are certainly going to rise in the short term."

Market sources said that supply tightness is already being felt in Asia, where more spot business is conducted. If production cuts linger, the European market is also likely to see higher spot prices, they said.

In Europe, high-carbon ferrochrome stands at about USD 0.96 per lb and low carbon ferrochrome at about USD 2 per lb, against about USD 0.60 and USD 0.91 in China.

A European ferrochrome trader said that "Producers were keen to go into the buyback deals because the market was looking very weak in November and December. Rather than stockpiling, they had the option to cut output.”

South Africa has been struggling to meet demand for power, especially as new power plants meant to plug the shortfall have been delayed. Supply will remain vulnerable until the first of the new stations being built by Eskom becomes operational later this year.

Nickel jumps to 3 month high as steelmakers stock up

Bloomberg reported that Nickel rose to a 3 month high in London as stainless steelmakers the biggest users stocked up on metal amid signs of recovering economic growth. Copper fell.

U.S and European stainless steel producers may restock in the first quarter Goldman Sachs Group Inc said that in a Januaey 24th report. Canceled warrants or orders to remove metal from warehouses almost doubled this month an indication that inventories will start to decline. U.S consumer spending climbed in December as incomes grew the most in 8 year a Commerce Department report showed in Washington.

Mr David Wilson, an analyst at Citigroup Inc in London said that “We might be seeing some restocking by stainless steel mills and consumers. It usually happens at this time of year but there hasn’t been much sign of it until now.”

Nickel for delivery in three months jumped as much as 1.1% to USD 18,575 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange the highest since October 5th and was at USD 18,563 a tonne. Nickel rose 8.3% this month leading gains for the 6 main metals on the LME after being the only 1 to drop last year.

Copper futures dropped 0.1% to USD 3.7475 a pound on the Comex in New York trimming this year’s gain to 2.6%.

Nickel has climbed an average of 4.4% in January for the past 10 years according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Mr Duncan Hobbs, an analyst at Macquarie Group Ltd in London said that “You see that in a number of the LME traded metals markets that prices can be stronger in the first months of the year and the standard example is nickel. You tend to see higher output on average in the first and Q2 of the year so people need to buy their materials in preparation for that.”

    Vale Nickel production upate

Vale total finished nickel production in 2012 was 237,000 tonne, 1.9% below the previous year, mainly as a consequence of a longer than expected temporary suspension of mining operations in Sudbury during Q1 of 2012.

In Q4 of 2012 finished nickel production totaled 64,000 tonne, significantly improving from 3Q12, after scheduled maintenances were performed in most of the Sudbury and Thompson mines during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere when the demand for nickel is seasonally weak.

Finished nickel production from Sudbury was 53.1% higher in 4Q12, at 15,500 tonne, against 10,100 tonne in the previous quarter, recovering from planned maintenance shutdowns.

Compared to Q4 of 2011, output from Sudbury decreased by 4,000 tonne. This was caused by the challenges in integrating process enhancements in the Clarabelle mill. During the maintenance shutdown, the Challenging Ore Recovery project was implemented. It involves a simpler flowsheet with lower operating costs, increasing nickel recovery by some 6,000 tonne per year, improving concentrate quality and reducing the variability for downstream smelter operations.

Clarabelle is fully operational, the implementation of CORe completed and its benefits will be delivered from 2013 onwards. Investment in innovation has become an important driver of competitive advantage for mining companies. A project such as CORe contributes to operational excellence, as it reduces costs and raises efficiency.

The output of Thompson in Q4 of 2012 returned to normal levels after the planned maintenance shutdown in 3Q12. Production was slightly above the same period of last year, at 6,400 tonne.

Voisey’s Bay production was 18,500 tonne in 4Q12, an increase of 29.7% tonne from 3Q12, when output was lower due to maintenance at the Thompson refinery. Nickel production was lower compared to Q4 of 2011, as the basis for comparison was inflated by the decision to produce and sell nickel in nickel concentrates instead of shipping it to be refined at Sudbury, which involves a longer production cycle.

In 4Q12, finished nickel production sourced from our Indonesian operations at Sorowako totaled 23,000 tonne, an increase of 36.2% against 3Q12 as a result of process improvements. Output rose by 51.6% relative to 4Q11, when there was a metal cut-out.

The VNC integrated operation is running. The refinery is now operating using acid from our own acid plant. The main focus for 1Q13 will be achieving process stability and continuing to increase the throughput of the plant. Repairs to the acid plant and the installation of the refining columns of the solvent extraction circuit were concluded and we produced 1,200 tonne of nickel oxide in December. It is not accounted for as production until it is processed into utility nickel at the Dalian refinery.

The Onça Puma operations remain shut down, after issues with both furnaces were detected.

Nickel drops most in three weeks

Bloomberg reported that nickel fell the most in three weeks in London after investors moved to avoid riskier assets, sending equities lower and lifting bonds.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index of shares slid the most since November by the close yesterday, and a gauge of euro area bank stocks dropped the most in four months. The dollar gained the most in a month against a basket of six currencies, making raw materials less appealing as an alternative investment, and Treasuries advanced.

Mr Justin Froome a broker at Marex Spectron Group in London, citing the dollar’s “strong move higher” and the “large move lower” by bank equities said that “We notice a few warning signs on the charts this morning.” He added that “Base metals have traded in very low volumes overnight, but are all lower.”

Nickel for delivery in three months declined 0.5% to USD 18,640 a metric tonne by 9:43 AM on the London Metal Exchange. Prices dropped as much as 1.3%, the most since January 14. Copper for three-month delivery fell 0.2% to USD 8,291 a tonne and the metal for delivery in March rose 0.1 percent to USD 3.7725 a pound on the Comex in New York.

Prices also retreated amid concern political turmoil in Spain and Italy will hamper responses to the euro-area sovereign debt crisis that threatens metals demand. Spanish Premier Mariano Rajoy faces opposition calls to resign amid contested reports about illegal payments, and former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi is seeking to return to office.

According to Barclays Plc, Europe accounted for 22% of last year’s demand for nickel, used mainly to make stainless steel, and 18% of copper usage.

Europese staalmarkt blijft in z'n achteruit.

    Brussel, 12 februari 2013
    Auteur:
    Ruud Pey

European stainless steel output declines in Q4

According to the latest Stainless Steel Briefing February 2013 report issued by Germany based service centre Damstahl, in the first 11 months of 2012 European stainless crude steel production amounted to 7 million tonne falling 1% compared to the same period of 2011. Damstahl noted that in the October to November period of last year European crude steel production was 8% lower compared to the corresponding period of 2011. For the entire year of 2012 Damstahl predicts 7.5 million tonne of crude stainless steel production in Europe down from 7.6 million tonne in 2011.

According to the report the German stainless market has made a fairly strong start in 2013. Demand in January and the first indications for February looked promising. Stainless demand in the Netherlands increased slightly in January though order volumes in the Danish stainless steel market began to decline in late January after initially making a fairly good start to 2013. The stainless market in Sweden indicated a gradual weakening in the Q4 of 2012. December was weaker than the normal year end levels. The first weeks of January in Sweden appeared a little more promising but the general opinion is that 2013 will be a tough and stagnating year.

Meanwhile Damstahl said that stainless steel demand in Europe was stagnant in the Q4 of 2012. Since then the order intake has slightly improved at mills but it is more marginal than a real recovery. Damstahl forecasts that activity in the building and construction industry will remain flat this year and that the automotive industry will see a contraction of 3 to 7% in 2013 in Europe. However there are signs of a possible improvement in the economic situation in Europe in the current year.
