AK Steel said that it will increase base prices for 200, 300 and 400 series flat rolled stainless steel products, effective with shipments on August 1, 2013.

AK Steel said this increase will be achieved through a reduction in the functional discount of two percentage points for cold rolled and hot rolled non-automotive exhaust products

Further, effective with shipments on October 1, 2013, AK Steel will increase prices on all stainless products.

This increase will be achieved through a reduction in the functional discount of an additional two percentage points for cold rolled and hot rolled non-automotive exhaust products. Also, base prices for automotive exhaust grades will be increased by $0.02 per pound to $0.04 per pound, depending on the grade, effective on October 1, 2013.

Global Crude Stainless steel production to hit an all time high - MEPS

Commodity Online reported that surge in production in China while moderate growth or contraction in many other parts of the world would lead to a record output of 36.4 million tonnes of stainless steel in 2013, according to MEPS International. A year on year increase of 7% is forecast for 2013, giving a total outturn of over 17 million tonnes.

Stainless steelmaking in the established markets of the EU, United States and the Far East remain below the pre-crisis peak of 2006. Chinese production has more than tripled since that time.

The other established stainless steel producing nations in the Far East are not faring so well, in competition with the burgeoning Chinese industry. With subdued purchasing at home and in traditional export markets, output in Taiwan and South Korea is predicted to decrease this year, compared with 2012. The situation in Japan is improving slightly and a marginal increase in crude stainless steel production is anticipated, to give a total of over 3.1 million tonnes.

There have been some positive results in economic indicators from the United States. Output in the first half of 2013 has matched expectations and we have uprated our forecast for the remainder of the year, to give an annual total of more than 2 million tonnes an increase of over 2% year on year.

Industrial activity in the European Union remains depressed. The countries in the south of the continent have shown little sign of recovery. Even in Germany, where the effects of the financial crisis were offset by strong sales of cars and other consumer goods to Asia, the economy has slowed. Our forecast for total 2013 production has been revised downwards to 7.325 million tonnes, a reduction of nearly 2% on last year’s figure.

The situation regarding Outokumpu’s divestment of the former Inoxum plant at Terni, in Italy, has not been resolved. The deadline for the sale necessary to satisfy EU competition rules has been extended, as the Finnish group have not received any bids that they find satisfactory. Whilst it is expected that production will continue at Terni, whoever the new owners may be, it is clear that there is overcapacity in the European stainless steel sector. At least one of the leading players will have to reduce their steelmaking capabilities in the medium term.

Nickel up by 1.5% on firm demand

Business Standard reported that Nickel prices moved up by 1.47% to INR 929.30 per kg in futures market today as speculators enlarged their positions, tracking a firming trend in the global market.

Besides, an encouraging trend in the domestic spot markets on the back of strong demand from alloy-makers supported the upside.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, nickel for delivery in September gained INR 13.50, or 1.47%, to INR 929.30 per kg in business turnover of 79 lots.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in August rose by INR 13.10 or 1.44% to INR 922.40 per kg in 1,225 lots.

Market analysts said that apart from increased domestic demand from alloy makers, firmness in base metals at the London Metal Exchange after an unexpected drop in US jobless claims and expanded manufacturing data also influenced nickel futures here.

    Prijzen metalen in de lift
    door Sonny Duijn
    AMSTERDAM -

Daily surcharge gets green light from European stainless steel millsLondon (Platts)--11Oct2013/902 am EDT/1302 GMT

Steelmakers Outokumpu and Aperam are looking at a daily surcharge as the preferred alternative to the monthly alloy system in Europe, the companies said Thursday.

Both companies have for some months been looking to move away from the existing system.

Having completed a pilot phase and received feedback for its proposed changes, Outokumpu plans to discontinue its existing monthly surcharge announcements and move to a daily surcharge calculation on new orders for distribution sector customers from January 1, 2014.

A senior executive at Outokumpu told Platts that the system is more agile than the existing monthly calculation, which lags the market. It better reflects changes in key raw materials prices, allows customers "to have more of a finger on the pulse of the market," and enables mills to adjust price direction more quickly.

When placing an order, customers will be able to set the surcharge at that point at the rate for that day, or delay this decision and then at any time during the delivery period select a future date for a surcharge to be applied. This can be done right up to the Friday prior to delivery.

"It also helps us to match changes in imported stainless prices," the senior executive said. Outokumpu will be making more specific communications about the scheme with its customers over the coming weeks.

Aperam has independently been conducting a similar exercise, holding detailed discussions and trials with their regular customers about an alternative alloy surcharge mechanism.

A senior executive at Aperam told Platts that the company expects by year-end to be able to offer distribution sector buyers the option of retaining the existing arrangement of base price plus monthly surcharge, or moving to a daily surcharge based on the short-term LME price for nickel, provided that the choice is made when the order is placed and that no change s made after that.

"When placing an order, customers would be able to set the surcharge at that point at the rate for that day or any day thereafter until delivery," he said, and added that the offer is particularly adapted to the distribution segment, but does not exclude other customers if interested.

Platts understands the company is currently refining its IT systems to allow a smooth transition to the new option, and this could take until the end of the year.

According to the executive, reaction to the proposed new scheme has been mixed, with some customers showing interest and others "still to fully understand the consequences of moving to a different pricing model."

Based on comments made to Platts, although reaction to the mills' proposals varies, it is rather more negative than the producers' decision to proceed with changes would suggest.

One area of concern appears to be the possibility of distributors having to expend time and resources hedging their nickel exposure at a time when margins on stainless steel are thin.

    Rio Tinto rapporteert record ijzerertsproductie
    15-10-2013 9:05:47
