    Op een rustige Aziatische beurs blonk Baidu vanochtend uit. Het Chinese internetconcern liet weten dat zijn chatbot bijna klaar is voor gebruik. Met de chatbot, die gebruik maakt van kunstmatige intelligentie, wil het de concurrentie aangaan met het recent heel populair geworden ChatGPT.

    The Chinese balloon saga threatens to be a watershed moment in the world’s dangerous new superpower rivalry: For the first time, Americans experienced a tangible symbol of the national security challenge from Beijing.

    The craft, described by US intelligence as a surveillance balloon, presented a comparatively low-tech, modest security threat compared to the multi-layered espionage, economic, cyber, military and geopolitical rivalry escalating every day.

    But as it wafted through US skies before being shot down Saturday off of the Carolinas, the balloon created a sudden moment when the idea of a threat by China to the US homeland was neither distant, theoretical, unseen, or years in the future. And it underscored how in today’s polarized America, Washington’s first reaction in the face of a threat is to point fingers rather than unify.

    It was not the first time that Chinese balloons have crossed into US airspace during this administration or the last one – and military officials told CNN this one was not seen as a particularly grave intelligence or national security threat. But its mocking days-long sashay from Montana to the eastern seaboard sparked a media frenzy and a Washington uproar.

    US military searches territorial waters for Chinese spy balloon wreckage

    The US military said it is searching for remnants of the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon it shot down, in a dramatic spy saga that has further strained American-Chinese relations.

    The US navy is working to recover the balloon and its payload and the coast guard is providing security for the operation, general Glen VanHerck, commander of the North American aerospace defence command and US northern command said on Sunday.

    A successful recovery could give the United States insight into China’s spying capabilities, though US officials have downplayed the balloon’s impact on national security.

    VS lichten diplomaten in over Chinese 'spionageballon'

    WASHINGTON/BEIJING (ANP/RTR) - De Verenigde Staten hebben diplomaten in Washington en Beijing ingelicht over de vermeende Chinese spionageballon die eind januari het Amerikaanse luchtruim binnenvloog en onlangs is neergehaald. Dat meldt de krant The Washington Post op basis van bronnen binnen de Amerikaanse overheid.

    Onderminister van Buitenlandse Zaken Wendy Sherman heeft in Washington zo'n 150 buitenlandse diplomaten uit 40 landen ingelicht over de Amerikaanse bevindingen over de ballon. In Beijing konden diplomaten voor informatie terecht op de Amerikaanse ambassade. "We willen zoveel mogelijk delen met landen die ook doelwit van een dergelijke inbreuk op hun soevereiniteit kunnen worden", aldus een hoge overheidsbeambte tegen de krant. Het ministerie heeft de informatie ook gestuurd naar Amerikaanse ambassades wereldwijd, zodat zij die weer kunnen delen met partners en bondgenoten.

    De Chinese ballon ter grootte van drie bussen vloog dagenlang boven de VS en werd zaterdag boven de Atlantische Oceaan neergehaald. Volgens China ging het om een afgedreven weerballon. De diplomaten kregen onder andere informatie te zien die het tegendeel zou moeten bewijzen. Zo zou de vliegroute van de ballon niet overeenkomen met de windrichting en zouden de zonnepanelen waarmee de ballon was uitgerust veel meer energie geven dan nodig is voor een weerballon.

    Volgens de bronnen van The Washington Post is de ballon onderdeel van een uitgebreide militaire observatie-operatie die door het Chinese leger wordt gerund vanaf het eiland Hainan in de Zuid-Chinese Zee. Hoeveel ballonnen er precies rondvliegen is niet bekend, maar overheidsbronnen hebben het over tientallen missies in vijf continenten sinds 2018. China zou het onder andere hebben voorzien op Japan, India, Vietnam, Taiwan en de Filipijnen.

    China spy balloon: US Navy releases photos of debris

    The US Navy has released photos of a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that was shot out of the sky on Saturday.

    The US Fleet Forces Command posted several photos on its Facebook page showing large debris of the balloon being hauled into a boat.

    The post said the sailors retrieving the debris on Sunday were part of the Navy's specialist explosives team.

    The device will now be examined to see whether it was indeed spy equipment.

    US officials have described the balloon as being about 200 ft (60m) tall, with the payload portion comparable in size to regional airliners and weighing hundreds - or potentially thousands - of pounds.

    China has repeatedly insisted that the "airship is for civilian use and entered the US due to force majeure - it was completely an accident".

    On Tuesday, US officials said the Pentagon sought to arrange a phone call between Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Chinese counterpart after the balloon was shot down, but was rebuffed by China.

    "Lines between our militaries are particularly important in moments like this," defence press secretary Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said in a statement. "Unfortunately, the PRC has declined our request."

    The discovery of the balloon set off a diplomatic crisis, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken immediately calling off a weekend trip to China - the first such high level US-China meeting there in years - over the "irresponsible act".

    De Amerikanen hebben tevergeefs geprobeerd China te bellen, maar de Defensieminister in Beijing neemt sinds het neerschieten van de Chinese 'spionageballon' de telefoon niet meer op. De Amerikaanse minister van Defensie 'blijft het toch proberen', zegt een woordvoerder van het Pentagon.

    Een woordvoerder van het Pentagon zegt tegen The New York Times dat China niet heeft gereageerd op een verzoek voor een telefoongesprek tussen de Amerikaanse minister van Defensie Lloyd Austin en zijn Chinese collega Wei Fenghe.

    US: Chinese Spy Balloons Have Violated Sovereignty of Nations on 5 Continents

    The United States said Wednesday that Chinese surveillance balloons have been spotted across at least five continents over the past several years and that Washington has been in contact with its allies to share information on the operations.

    “We've already shared information with dozens of countries around the world, both from Washington and through our embassies. And we're doing so because the United States was not the only target as far as this program, which has violated the sovereignty of countries across five continents,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the State Department.

    “As to who's responsible for that, China is. And it doesn't matter, on one level, which individuals may or may not have been responsible,” Blinken said when asked whether he thought Chinese President Xi Jinping was aware of the spy balloon operations.

    Spy balloon confirms ‘pattern of Chinese behavior’ that poses threat to NATO members, Stoltenberg says

    NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the recent Chinese spy balloon over the United States presents security challenges for the 30-member alliance as well as countries around the globe.

    “The balloon over the United States confirms a pattern of Chinese behavior where we see that China has invested heavily in new capabilities, including different types of surveillance and intelligence platforms,” the NATO chief said.

    Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. intelligence community was studying the balloon and that the U.S. would continue to update allies as well as countries around the world that may be victims of Chinese espionage.

    IQ (Nasdaq) is de "Chinese Netflix. Netflix heeft ongeveer 200 Mio Subscribers, IQ heeft er 100 Mio. Hieronder een vergelijking van de twee (artikel).

    Een klein vergelijk mbt beurskoers en waarde :

    IQ : Omzet 4,5 Mia $ Beurswaarde 7,2 Mia $ (2 X de omzet)
    NFLX : Omzet 31 Mia $ Beurswaarde 165 Mia $ (5 X de omzet)

    IQ opereert in een minder rijke markt ; Chinezen pirateren graag en geven minder uit dan US en EU customers. Op termijn denk ik echter dat IQ fors kan stijgen. Het aandeel is 100 % gestegen op korte termijn. Ik heb op de dip gekocht, en koop er af en toe bij. Ik geloof in koersen van 15 tot 20 $. De huidige koers is ongeveer 7,75 $, alweer een year high...

    VS: Chinese ballon bevatte spionageapparatuur

    WASHINGTON - De Chinese ballon die vorige week over de Verenigde Staten vloog en werd neergeschoten, was onmiskenbaar uitgerust met spionageapparatuur. De ballon verzamelde dus geen data over het weer, zoals de Chinezen beweren, aldus een Amerikaanse topambtenaar van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken.

    Foto’s die gemaakt werden door Amerikaanse verkenningsvliegtuigen tonen aan dat de apparaten waarvan de ballon was voorzien duidelijk zijn gemaakt voor observatie voor spionagedoeleinden, zegt de anonieme medewerker. Hij wijst op de reeks antennes, waarschijnlijk om communicatiesignalen te verzamelen en te lokaliseren. De VS zijn er ook van overtuigd dat de ballon deel uitmaakte van een hele vloot spionageballonnen, die door het regime in Beijing naar ruim veertig landen op vijf continenten werd gestuurd.

    Chinese inflatie loopt op

    Naar ruim 2 procent in januari.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De consumentenprijzen in China zijn in januari in een hoger tempo gestegen. Dit bleek vrijdag uit cijfers van het Chinese bureau voor de statistiek.

    Op jaarbasis stegen de prijzen met 2,1 procent na een plus van 1,8 procent in december en 1,6 procent in november.

    De prijsstijging in januari kwam net onder de verwachtingen van economen uit. Die hadden gerekend op een inflatie van 2,2 procent.

    Op maandbasis stegen de consumentenprijzen in januari met 0,8 procent na een stabiele ontwikkeling in december.

    Chinese producentenprijzen verder omlaag

    Met 0,8 procent op jaarbasis.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De producentenprijzen in China zijn in januari verder gedaald en ook sterker dan in december. Dit bleek vrijdag uit cijfers van het Chinese bureau voor de statistiek.

    Op jaarbasis daalden de prijzen in januari met 0,8 procent, na een afname van 0,7 procent een maand eerder. De verwachting lag op een afname met 0,5 procent.

    Op maandbasis ging het om een afname met 0,4 procent.

    State Department says device had multiple antennas ‘likely capable of collecting and geo-locating communications’.

    Washington, DC – The United States has released new details about the alleged Chinese “spy” balloon that flew over the country last week, saying the aircraft was “clearly” used to gather intelligence.

    The balloon, which was shot down by US forces over the Atlantic Ocean after traversing the continental US, was “capable of conducting signals intelligence collection operations”, a US Department of State official said on Thursday on condition of anonymity.

    House passes resolution condemning China’s use of spy balloon

    The House of Representatives voted to pass a resolution condemning China’s use of the suspected surveillance balloon that was shot down by US jets over the weekend, in a rare moment of unity in a sharply divided chamber.

    The measure passed unanimously with overwhelming bipartisan support by a vote of 419 to zero, and the resolution serves as a symbolic rebuke of the Chinese government and is not binding legislatively.

    It condemns “the Chinese Communist Party’s use of a high-altitude surveillance balloon over United States territory as a brazen violation of United States sovereignty.”

    Additionally, the resolution calls on the Biden administration “to continue to keep Congress apprised by providing comprehensive briefings” on the incident.

    The measure was introduced by Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs committee.

    “Last week, the nation watched in shock as a Chinese surveillance balloon traversed much of the United States, including sensitive American military sites,” McCaul said in a statement. The chairman said that the resolution sends a message “that this kind of aggression will not be tolerated.”
