    Servier and Galapagos initiate strategic alliance in osteoarthritis

    • Joint discovery and development of novel small molecules for osteoarthritis
    • Research access payment of €7 million for Galapagos
    • R&D, regulatory and other milestones for Galapagos could reach €290 million, plus royalties
    • Servier to commercialize drugs worldwide, except for the U.S. where Galapagos retains exclusive rights
    Paris, France and Mechelen, Belgium; 1 July 2010 – Servier, a leading French pharmaceutical company, and Galapagos NV (Euronext: GLPG) announced today that they have entered into a multi-year strategic alliance to develop new therapies in osteoarthritis (OA).

    The alliance between Servier and Galapagos builds on novel OA drug targets discovered by Galapagos through its proprietary platform. Galapagos will be responsible for the discovery and development of new small molecule candidate drugs against these targets. Some of the OA-research programs are in the advanced stages of drug discovery. Servier will have an exclusive option to license each small molecule program after the completion of Phase I clinical trials by Galapagos. Upon exercise of each option, Servier will be responsible for the further clinical development, registration and commercialization. For any marketed products, Galapagos retains exclusive U.S. commercialization rights.

    Under the terms of the agreement, Galapagos will receive research access payments of €7 million from Servier. Galapagos is also eligible to receive discovery, development, regulatory and other milestone payments that could reach €290 million, plus royalties upon commercialization of products outside the U.S. covered under the agreement.

    “We will leverage Galapagos’ novel targets and drug discovery capabilities through this alliance with Servier, our eighth risk-sharing alliance with a pharmaceutical company,” said Onno van de Stolpe, CEO of Galapagos. “Retaining the US rights to any products from this alliance is important to Galapagos, especially as the US has a large need for disease-modifying osteoarthritis therapies.”

    “This alliance is in line with Servier’s commitment to develop disease-modifying drugs for sufferers of uncured diseases, such as OA, a debilitating disease that affects 12% of the world population, leading to severe and costly handicaps,” said Emmanuel Canet, Head of R&D at Servier. “Through this collaboration with Galapagos, we gain access to validated OA targets and molecules that have shown promise in altering the course of the disease," said Bernard Marchand, Head of Research at Servier.

    About osteoarthritis
    Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, typically affecting people aged 45 and older. It is a degenerative disease characterized by joint destruction and loss of cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over one another. It also absorbs energy from the shock of physical movement. In OA, the surface layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint. Over time, the joint may lose its normal shape. Also, bone spurs called osteophytes - may grow on the edges of the joint. Bits of bone or cartilage can break off and float inside the joint space. This causes more pain and damage. No currently available treatments prevent OA or even reverse or block the disease process. Treatment of OA involves weight control, exercise.and pain relief, most frequently with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that relieve the symptoms without changing the course of the underlying disease. Many OA patients have pain that persists despite these measures and often then have to undergo costly surgical procedures to replace their damaged joints. It is expected that with the aging of the population, more individuals will be prone to develop OA. As mobility of seniors is of high importance to maintaining a high quality of life, preventing the severity of OA is seen as an immense clinical need over the next decade.

    Maar nog beter ware om de tittel van het PB te gebruiken, nu is het allemaal betrekkelijk tijdsgebonden en later moeilijk op te zoeken. Wie weet straks nog dat er op 1 juli een PB was over een alliantie met Vernier en OA?

    Ik zal het goed maken...

    Hier een bericht uit 'de Tijd', daarin leer ik dat het voluit 'Les Laboratoires Servier' moet zijn. www.servier.com/
    NB. Met Servier in de tittel kom men trouwens al een eind via Google.
    Blijkt dat Servier ook in Leiden een vestiging heeft (ons kent ons?).

    Galapagos ontvangt 7 miljoen van Servier voor toegang tot onderzoek. Galapagos schat de mogelijke opbrengsten uit onder meer onderzoeks-, registratie- en succesbetalingen in totaal op 290 miljoen euro.

    De groep Servier is niet aan de beurs genoteerd en realiseerde in 2009 met 20.000 medewerkers een omzet van 3,6 miljard euro. Servier telt wereldwijd 140 vestigingen en legt zich vooral toe op de ontwikkeling van geneesmiddelen op gebied van hart- en vaatziekten, stofwisseling, neurologie, psychiatrie, bot- en gewrichtsziekten en oncologie.

    Bij artrose of osteoartritis verdwijnt het kraakbeen tussen de botten waardoor deze over elkaar kunnen schuren. Op dit moment zijn er geen medicijnen die artrose kunnen voorkomen of kunnen afremmen. Naar schatting 12 procent van de wereldbevolking lijdt aan artrose./

    Dear reader,

    Galapagos continued its solid momentum into the second quarter of 2010 - with progress in its alliances and clinical programs as well as new agreements for both the R&D and service operations.

    Alliances going strong

    Earlier today, Galapagos announced a new strategic alliance with leading French pharma Servier to develop new therapies in osteoarthritis. Under the terms of the agreement, Galapagos receives a research access payment of €7 million from Servier and is eligible to receive milestone payments of up to €290 million, plus royalties upon commercialization of products. For any marketed products, Galapagos also retains exclusive U.S. commercialization rights.



    Galapagos also expanded its COPD alliance with Roche to increase the number of antibody targets and broaden the scope to potentially include peptides and nucleic acids. Based on this extension, R&D, regulatory and sales milestones for Galapagos could exceed €550 million plus royalties.

    Furthermore, Galapagos reported milestones in its osteoporosis alliance with Lilly, resulting in payments of €2.9 million.

    5th program in the clinic

    In May, Galapagos initiated a first-in-human trial for GLPG0492, its candidate drug for cachexia (loss of weight and muscle mass) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Aimed at determining the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of GLPG0492, Galapagos plans to report results for this Phase I trial in the second half of 2010.



    Service operations sign largest deal ever

    At the start of the quarter, BioFocus entered a new collaboration with CHDI to discover novel drugs for Huntington's disease. In this five-year collaboration - BioFocus' largest to date - BioFocus is eligible to receive US$41 million (€31 million) in research fees.



    Corporate events

    On the corporate level, Galapagos raised €2.4 million in capital from employee warrant exercises this quarter. Furthermore, Galapagos management increased its shareholding to 1.5% through individual share purchases. In June, venture capital fund Apax sold its position in Galapagos; while Galapagos was pleased to announce Mr. A. Strating as a new major shareholder, holding 5.2% of Galapagos shares.



    At the AGM/EGM held on 27 April 2010 the shareholders approved the appointment of Ronald Brus to Galapagos' Board of Directors and as well as all other agenda items.



    In its Q1 business update, Galapagos reiterated full year 2010 financial guidance given earlier this year: group revenues of over €135 million, with positive operational income and cash flow, and a positive net result in 2010.

    In Q3 2010, Galapagos plans to present scientific results at the International Conference on Medicinal Chemistry, the World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology as well as at the BioBusiness Network this September.

    Petercam analyst Delphine Delhez initiated coverage of Galapagos in June with a BUY rating and target price of €14.00.

    NIH verlengt contract met Galapagos

    Brussel (tijd) - Het Amerikaanse National Institute of Health (NIH) verlengt zijn overeenkomst met BioFocus, de servicedivisie van het biotechtbedrijf Galapagos, voor 2 jaar. Het verdere beheer van de chemische molecuul-collecties van het NIH levert Galapagos 7 miljoen euro op in verschillende betalingen over die periode.

    BioFocus beheert vanuit haar vestiging in South San Francisco molecuul-collecties voor een aantal klanten in de VS, zowel uit de industrie als overheid. De samenwerking met het NIH dateert al van 2004.
