    Audi Installs Charging Stations for FC Bayern

    FC Bayern and its partner Audi have installed 21 charging points for electric vehicles at the Allianz Arena. As of this summer, the charging infrastructure will gradually be expanded, allowing electric vehicles to soon be charged in other areas of the record-holding German champions’ stadium complex. In September 2020, FC Bayern and Audi started their journey toward sustainable mobility together. The club’s fleet of vehicles has been converted to electric drive in an ongoing process. A large proportion of the squad and the club management are now on the road with fully electric vehicles in the form of the Audi e-tron or Audi e-tron Sportback. Soon, the Audi e-tron GT will be delivered to the pro athletes.

    Audi and FC Bayern have already installed 38 charging points at the training ground on Säbener Straße. They were connected to the grid in late summer of 2020, in time for the start of the Bundesliga season. FC Bayern has reduced its fleet consumption to less than 95 grams of CO2/km, and is thus making an important contribution to sustainability.

    The charging infrastructure for electric cars is constantly expanding. With the e-tron Charging Service (eCS), Audi offers access to more than 220,000 charging points in 26 countries throughout Europe. Furthermore, Audi is consistently expanding its range of electric models.

    In addition, Audi is strengthening its range in the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) segment: around every second combustion-engine series will also feature a plug-in hybrid model this year. By 2025, Audi intends to offer more than 20 fully electric models and significantly accelerate the expansion of its PHEV range. The company predicts that by then, fully electric and hybrid automobiles will make up around one-third of its global distribution.

    AMAG Supplies ASI Certified Sustainable Aluminium to Audi

    AMAG and Audi are once again taking a collective step towards a sustainable future with the use of ASI materials. The first AMAG aluminium to be certified in accordance with the international Chain of Custody standard of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is being shipped to the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. This material produced in accordance with this strict sustainability standard is used for the outer body sheet of the A6 Avant tailgate. For AMAG, this order not only represents its first-ever sale of ASI-certified materials, it also marks the company’s debut as a supplier of outer body sheets for this model series.

    The ASI Chain of Custody standard defines the requirements for creating a responsible aluminium supply chain. This covers every step of the value creation process – from the production of bauxite, or secondary aluminium through processing in the foundry and rolling mill, to the finished product. ASI certification confirms that both the primary and secondary aluminium used by AMAG and the company’s internal processes meet the high sustainability requirements set out by the standard.

    Volkswagen blijft bezorgd over chiptekort - media
    Bijbouwen capaciteit kost jaren.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Volkswagen blijft bezorgd over het tekort aan halfgeleiders. Dit blijkt uit een interview van Handelsblatt met de hoofd inkoop van de autofabrikant.

    Aangezien het uitbreiden van de capaciteit door de chipfabrikanten volgens hem tot wel twee jaar kan duren, rekent Volkswagen op een tekort van 10 procent aan halfgeleiders op lange termijn.

    Volkswagen meent dat op dit moment het dieptepunt is bereikt en dat kan nog weken aanhouden. Dat betekent dat in het derde kwartaal de situatie langzaam zal verbeteren.

    Als gevolg van het tekort aan chips kan Volkswagen meer dan 100.000 auto's niet bouwen.

    Daimler, BASF, Fairphone & Volkswagen for Lithium Mining in Chile

    Several companies have initiated a “Responsible Lithium Partnership” aiming to work towards responsible natural resource management, including lithium, in Chile’s Salar de Atacama. This cross-industry partnership is funded at its inception by Daimler AG, BASF, Fairphone, and Volkswagen Group. The partnership intends to foster a dialogue among local stakeholders, generating and synthesizing scientific facts and seeking solutions in a participatory manner. The platform aims to facilitate a common understanding of the status quo and jointly develop a shared vision for the future of the Salar de Atacama watershed. In addition, it intends the co-development of a joint action plan to improve long-term integrated natural resource management and undertake the first implementing steps. Another aim is to synthesize and verify available technical data, improve on it if necessary, and increase accessibility. The Responsible Lithium Partnership will commence in spring 2021, with a planned duration of 2.5 years. It does not intend to facilitate the sourcing of lithium nor the purchase or selling of any raw mineral.

    The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, commissioned by the companies, will coordinate the partnership seeking to find common ground by building a multi-stakeholder platform among all relevant actors in the Salar watershed - ranging from civil society groups including indigenous communities, government institutions, mining companies and beyond.

    The financing companies Daimler AG, BASF, Fairphone, and Volkswagen Group are aware of their responsibility along the entire supply chain, including their human rights due diligence for raw material sourcing and production. They have, therefore, initiated the “Responsible Lithium Partnership” to promote sustainable development, contribute to the reduction of potential negative impacts and strengthen the protection of human rights.

    Due to the expansion of e-mobility and digitization, the demand for lithium as key material in batteries is expected to grow in the next years. The World’s largest lithium reserves and large parts of the total production are located in the Salar de Atacama. The region’s ecosystem is fragile and there is lack of consensus regarding the impacts and risks of lithium mining and other economic activity in the region. Potential risks derived from water and brine table shifts could potentially harm the ecosystems and affect local livelihoods. Addressing such water-related risks effectively requires the collaboration of stakeholders.

    ŠKODA StartsProduction of KUSHAQ SUV at Pune

    Production of the KUSHAQ has begun at the ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited plant in Chakan in Pune, with deliveries to customers scheduled to start in July. The ŠKODA KUSHAQ is the first series-produced model to be manufactured locally in India as part of the INDIA 2.0 project. The SUV is based on the MQB-A0-IN version of the Modular Transverse Toolkit developed specifically for the Indian market. The new SUV combines a bold design with the spaciousness typical of a ŠKODA, a high degree of comfort, extensive safety features, efficient TSI engines and modern infotainment systems.

    The name of the mid-size SUV is derived from Indian Sanskrit. In the millennia-old “language of the gods”, which is still used today, the word “kushak” denotes a king or an emperor. This is a perfect match for the powerful appearance of the new ŠKODA KUSHAQ. With modern and efficient TSI engines, its striking design, modern infotainment systems, a high level of comfort and safety features as well as the myŠKODA Connect & ŠKODA Play app, the new SUV is optimally primed for the successful launch of the brand’s model campaign on the Indian market.

    Local development and production

    The technical basis for the new ŠKODA KUSHAQ and future volume models is the locally designed and manufactured MQB-A0-IN platform. The platform is aligned with the new, stricter safety and emission specifications for India. ŠKODA has constructed a new MQB- A0-IN production line at the Pune plant, thereby achieving a localisation depth of up to 95 per cent. The development of this platform was largely carried out at the Technology Centre in Pune, which opened in January 2019. With their considerable technological expertise and in-depth knowledge of the local market conditions, the team of local employees can respond to changing customer needs more effectively, more flexibly and therefore much more quickly.

    ŠKODA AUTO has lead responsibility for the Volkswagen Group’s activities in the Indian market.

    Geen enkele van de 18.000 managers van Volkswagen mag nog een elektrische auto bestellen. De reden is dat het concern alle modellen nodig heeft om aan de enorme vraag te voldoen.

    Nog geen jaar geleden was de situatie precies omgekeerd. CEO Herbert Diess vond toen juist dat alle managers het goede voorbeeld moesten geven. Managers moesten toen hun geliefde SUV opgeven en rijden in een elektrische ID.3 of ID.4. Nu moeten ze allemaal terug van elektrische auto's naar modellen met alleen een verbrandingsmotor of een hybride.

    De productie van elektrische auto’s draait momenteel op volle toeren, zo blijkt uit een interne memo van het bedrijf. ,,Daarom zijn de levertijden van onze voertuigen momenteel aanzienlijk langer.” Het aanbod van geëlektrificeerde bedrijfswagens moet daarom worden opgeschort tot het vierde kwartaal.

    Tot voor kort werd elektrisch rijden intern dus enorm gepromoot. Sterker nog: wie toch een benzine-, diesel- of hybride bestelde, moest als compensatie 15 euro per maand betalen. VW schorst nu deze ‘CO2-compensatiebijdrage’ tot nader order. Dat de elektrische auto's van VW het goed doen is geen verrassing. Inmiddels hebben al meer dan 100.000 mensen een elektrische ID.3 besteld.

    Volkswagen to Use New 3D Printing Process for Vehicles

    Volkswagen is pressing ahead with the use of innovative 3D printers in car production. For the first time, the newest process, known as binder jetting, is being used to manufacture components at the company’s main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. Whereas conventional 3D printing uses a laser to build a component layer by layer from metallic powder, the binder jetting process uses an adhesive. The resulting metallic component is then heated and shaped. Using the binder jetting component reduces costs and increases productivity – for example, the components weigh only half as much as those made from sheet steel. Volkswagen is currently the only car maker using this 3D printing technology in the production process.

    To achieve this innovative advance, Volkswagen has invested an amount in the mid-double-digit million euro range over the past five years. In addition, the company has entered into a software partnership with Siemens and expanded its existing collaboration with printer manufacturer HP Inc. With the first full-scale use of binder jetting, they intend to acquire important experience and learn, for example, which components can be produced economically and quickly in the future or how additive manufacturing can support the digital transformation of production at Volkswagen.

    HP is providing the high-tech printers needed and Siemens the special software for additive manufacturing. One key process step that has been worked on jointly by Siemens and VW is optimizing the positioning of components in the build chamber. Known as nesting, this technique makes it possible to produce twice as many parts per print session.

    From summer, the three companies intend to establish a joint expert team at the high-tech 3D printing center which opened in Wolfsburg at the end of 2018 and enables the manufacture of complex automotive components using 3D printing. The center also trains employees in the use of these technologies.

    By 2025, the aim is to produce up to 100,000 components by 3D printing in Wolfsburg each year. The first components made using the binder jetting process have gone to Osnabrück for certification: components for the A pillar of the T-Roc convertible. These weigh almost 50 percent less than conventional components made from sheet steel. This reduction alone makes the process especially interesting for automotive production applications. Volkswagen has already successfully conducted crash tests on 3D-printed metallic vehicle components. Until now, the production of larger volumes was not cost-effective enough. However, the new technology and the collaboration will now make production-line use economically viable.
