Mercedes Benz eActros Electrifies Rotterdam & Hague with Simon Loos

After about a year of intensive practical use by ten customers in Germany and Switzerland, eight of the purely battery powered trucks are now successively going to new customers in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. They also will put the eActros through its paces in tough everyday transport operations for about a year. Two vehicles will continue the operational testing with customers in the first test phase. Simon Loos, a leading company for logistics services based in the Netherlands, will receive the first eActros of the second phase.

Simon Loos is using an eActros equipped with a refrigerated box for the Albert Heijn supermarket chain. The daily tour of the eActros starts at Albert Heijn’s regional distribution center in Delfgauw in the province of South Holland. From there, the e-truck supplies supermarket stores in various cities in the region, including Rotterdam, The Hague and Delft, with dry goods and fresh, temperature-controlled food. The eActros will run seven days a week, covering around 200 kilometers every day in locally CO2-neutral operation. The batteries will be charged overnight and in between routes at the distribution center in Delfgauw, where Albert Heijn is currently constructing an innovative square with multiple fast-chargers. In preparation for the test, experts from Mercedes-Benz Trucks gave the Simon Loos drivers special training in the use of high-voltage systems.

The cool swap body of the eActros used by Simon Loos is the W.KO COOL model from Schmitz Cargobull. It has optimized insulation for the energy-efficient transport of refrigerated goods and its robust construction is ideal for intensive daily use. The purely electrically operated refrigeration unit is completely emission-free in use and is specially designed for distribution transport. As was the case in the first test phase, the bodies of the vehicles will again be mainly provided by Schmitz Cargobull.

The eActros is based on the chassis of the Mercedes-Benz Actros. In addition, however, the vehicle’s architecture is completely geared to electric drive and has a high proportion of specific parts. Two electric motors close to the rear-axle wheel hubs provide drive with an output of 126 kW each and a maximum torque of 485 Nm each. This results in 11,000 Nm each after the transmission ratio, providing a performance equivalent to that of a conventional truck. Lithium-ion batteries with 240 kWh supply the energy for the eActros. Depending on the available charging power, the batteries can be fully charged within two hours (at 150 kW).

MAN Lion’s City E Impresses during Test Run in Linz

Four days, tight urban area, steeply rising roads: The MAN Lion’s City E mastered every challenge in test operation, convincing the fleet managers and drivers of LINZ AG LINIEN. With the MAN Lion’s City EfficientHybrid, the company is already relying on clean and efficient solutions from MAN for urban transport. The aim is to identify further future-proof, environmentally friendly solutions for public transport as early as possible. The electric drive plays an important role here. The all-electric MAN city bus was presented for the first time in the Alpine Republic at the Federal Conference of Austrian Bus and Coach Companies last year. The MAN Lion’s City E celebrated its road premiere in Austria in mid-May 2020 and for four days in Linz showed what it is capable of.

The city bus impressed the fleet managers of LINZ AG LINIEN especially on the gradients. Thanks to the ergonomically designed driver’s workplace, which scores points for its high level of functionality and well thought-out arrangement of the controls, drivers can concentrate fully on the road traffic. But driving dynamics and acceleration combined with a smooth driving style also speak for themselves. In the solo bus with a length of 12 metres, the fully electric drive train delivers 160 kW to a maximum of 240 kW. The energy for this comes from the modular batteries with 480 kWh installed capacity. The Lion’s City E thus reliably achieves a range of 200 km over the entire service life of the batteries, and under favourable conditions it can even reach 270 km. In the 12-meter version, the Lion’s City E can accommodate up to 88 passengers.

In addition to the delivery of two-axle solo buses with a length of 12 metres and three-axle articulated buses with a length of 18 metres, the order also includes a full-service contract and a director’s workshop contract. Technical support will be provided by the MAN Truck & Bus Center Ansfelden. Delivery of the total of 88 MAN Lion’s City has begun. By 2024, all vehicles are to be in operation and will bring residents and visitors to Linz safely and comfortably to their destination.

The city buses are powered by ultramodern Euro 6d engines with the latest MAN EfficientHybrid technology. The system makes a significant contribution to reducing fuel consumption and emissions and thus to improving air quality in city centres.

General Motors & EVgo to Add Fast Chargers in US

general-motors-evgo-ev-charging_8726.jpg Image Source: General Motors EVgo Charging

General Motors and EVgo plan to triple the size of the US largest public fast charging network by adding more than 2,700 new fast chargers over the next five years, a move set to help accelerate widespread electric vehicle adoption. The two companies will add fast charging stations to cities and suburbs, unlocking new EV customer segments and providing increased charging access to drivers who live in multi-unit homes, rent their homes and can’t install chargers, or might not have access to workplace charging. Customers will have access to some of the fastest charging capabilities at the places they regularly frequent, like grocery stores, retail outlets, entertainment centers and other high-traffic locations. With fast charging available where people typically spend 15-30 minutes, customers can charge their vehicles in the time it takes to run their errands. This approach builds on the success of EVgo’s existing portfolio of more than 800 station locations across the United States, the most of any US public fast charging network.

The new EVgo fast charging stations will be available to customers starting early 2021. Stations will be located in highly visible areas and most will be able to charge at least four vehicles simultaneously. Additionally, stations will feature new charging technology with 100-350-kilowatt capabilities to meet the needs of an increasingly powerful set of EVs coming to market.

In their continued commitment to reaching a zero-emissions future, the new EVgo fast chargers will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy. Both GM and EVgo have made significant investments and commitments to running on renewable energy. Earlier this year, General Motors committed to all U.S. plants running on renewable energy by 2030 and all global plants running on renewable energy by 2040. In 2019, EVgo became the first North American charging company to contract for 100 percent renewable energy to power its chargers.

General Motors and EVgo designed this new endeavor to leverage private investment alongside government grant and utility programs, as building out the necessary charging infrastructure ahead of market demands will require continued public-private partnership.

MAHLE Condenser for Faster Charging of Electric Vehicles

MAHLE has introduced a new type of condenser for hybrid and electric vehicles that helps to accelerate traction battery charging. This new design offers significantly higher power density than the current one. As part of the cooling system, the condenser is one of the components that ensures the battery is optimally cooled during fast charging and reliably protected against damage. The new condenser also provides sufficient cooling capacity for comfortable temperature in the cabin without taking up additional installation space. Because fast charging is a key factor in the acceptance of electric vehicles, this innovation from MAHLE contributes toward making this form of transport more suitable for everyday use and the mass market. The new MAHLE condenser ensures that electric vehicles are optimally cooled during fast charging, while also providing the necessary power for cabin temperature control.

Battery cooling is crucial for the performance of electric vehicles. Until a few years ago, the most critical task of the engine cooling system was to protect the combustion engine from overheating under high loads. The thermal management of electrified vehicles has become much more complex including stronger interactions between cabin and powertrain thermal management and the need to maintain components such as the battery within tightly defined temperature limits. MAHLE has responded with a large number of innovations for the thermal management of electrically powered vehicles, thus enabling the success of new forms of mobility. Thermal management components from MAHLE can be found in hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell powered vehicles. Striking a balance between performance, installation space requirements, comfort, and systems costs is key. MAHLE meets these challenges by taking a holistic approach in the design of the entire thermal system and optimizing the interactions of each component. MAHLE is thus able to increase battery life and cruising range as well as passenger comfort and the performance of the drive system, thereby significantly contributing to the increased acceptance of alternative drives.

Continental & aft automotive JV for Future of Mobility

Company Continental and system supplier aft automotive are setting up a joint venture to manufacture couplings made of high-performance plastics for the future of mobility. The partners have signed a relevant agreement to create a 50 50 joint venture. The two companies have already been jointly developing special couplings that connect the cooling circuit or the turbocharger & charge-air cooler with units in the engine compartment since 2016. This successful development partnership is now being further expanded by setting up a joint venture.

Unlike conventional vehicles, electric vehicles require multiple cooling circuits with sophisticated thermal management. Batteries in electric vehicles achieve optimum operating efficiency at temperatures between 20 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius. This temperature span enables long ranges, allows the batteries to work more efficiently and extends battery lifetimes. For that reason, in similar fashion to drive and power components, the batteries have to be either cooled or heated, depending on the outside temperature. That results in complex circuits that significantly increase the demands on the individual components. The weight of the new hose generation is also being further reduced.

The right mixture of rubber, polyamide and aluminum materials and ingenious line geometry ensure the system has adequate inherent stability. Special lines and couplings made of high-performance plastics are developed for this.

Sophisticated thermal management extends the range of e-vehicles. Lines and connectors remain vital lifelines in cars , both for hybrid and electric vehicles and for IC engines which is a major contribution to the future of mobility.

Up till now, line systems have often been made of rubber or stainless steel. Especially in vehicles with hybrid drives or electric motors, though, there is a growing trend towards replacing rubber with premium technical plastics. This has allowed the developers to achieve further weight reductions while simultaneously improving performance: Plastic components reduce vehicle weight and thus help lower fuel consumption and cut CO2 emissions. At the same time, the downsizing of space in IC engines is changing the demands on connectors and lines because lighter, quieter and higher-power drives result in increased pressure and thermal loads. For example, auxiliary unit components in the latest generation of IC engines have to withstand continuous temperatures of 160 degrees Celsius for over 3,000 hours with temperature peaks of up to 210 degrees Celsius. High-performance plastics such as heat-stabilized polyamide are able to meet these demands in full.

BYD Buses Log US Record 13 Million Zero-Emission Miles

Build Your Dreams announced that its customers battery-electric buses have logged a US record 13 million miles of zero-emission operations, in the process saving over 16,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. More than 50 customers across the United States are operating US made BYD buses in communities from Martha’s Vineyard and Indianapolis to Palo Alto and Los Angeles. Zero-emission mileage logged by US BYD customers is the equivalent mileage of more than 520 trips around the globe.Every zero-emission bus eliminates approximately 1,690 tonnes of CO2 over its 12-year lifespan. BYD’s 13-million-mile emission-free landmark is the equivalent of removing 13,000 cars from the road, enough to fill the parking lot at Angels Stadium of Anaheim. Stacked on top of each other, those cars would be three times taller than Mt Everest. BYD is proudly Buy America compliant.

The 13 million emission-free miles traveled by BYD buses have eliminated the need for transit agencies and operators to consume 3.3 million gallons of diesel fuel resulting in millions of dollars in savings to US taxpayers

One BYD customer, the Antelope Valley Transit Authority, announced last month it crossed the 3-million-mile mark in zero emission operations. The AVTA estimates it has saved 769,231 gallons of diesel fuel, which equates to a savings of more than USD 1 million in fuel costs after paying for electricity.

Hoe Lapland wil floreren dankzij de elektrische auto

Europa wil snel eigen accufabrieken voor onze stekkerwagens. De eerste wordt gebouwd in Lapland. Waarom juist daar?

    Waar precies?
In Skelleftea.

    Erik Kouwenhoven 15-08-20, 06:00 Laatste update: 06:56
