Ageing population is bad news for European steel: Hatch
“I am very positive about world steel, but it is hard to be positive about European steel,” Rod Beddows, chief executive of Hatch Corporate Finance, told Steel Business Briefing’s Steel Markets Europe conference in Düsseldorf this week.

European consumers need to spend less and save more, he said. The savings rate in Europe has to rise to support an ageing population with growing pensions and healthcare requirements. This means less money to buy cars and other consumer goods.

    business.theage.com.au/business/world...

EU industry may be forced to adopt new business model
Generally lower inventory levels and a tighter supply chain, including more just-in-time deliveries, are among the key elements in a new business model which could well be forced on European producers by the recession, according to Brian Aranha, chief marketing officer of ArcelorMittal’s flat carbon products operations in Europe. Aranha was speaking at Steel Business Briefing’s recent Steel Markets Europe conference in Düsseldorf.

Shorter pricing horizons in spot and contract markets too could be part of this new structure. Overall, Aranha envisages a more flexible and a more transparent industry in response to today’s “rapidly changing and unpredictable” markets. The industry may also have to work without credit facilities/credit insurance, he suggested.

Two new major steel players may emerge from crisis
One, possibly two, further major steel industry players with the size and influence of ArcelorMittal may emerge from the current global economic crisis, according to Dr Werner Kreuz, vice-president of management consultancy firm AT Kearney.

Speaking at Steel Business Briefing's Steel Markets Europe conference last week, Kreuz proposed that one of these players will come from Russia while the second will most probably be a Chinese company, possibly Baosteel.

Two new major steel players may emerge: correction
Dr Werner Kreuz, vice-president of management consultancy firm AT Kearney, told Steel Business Briefing that Russian steel companies “may go on a shopping tour when raw material prices increase again,” as Russian players have their own raw material bases. This is contrary to SBB’s report of 9 June.

Also, AT Kearney describes its forecast that China will replace the USA and Europe as world economic leader as “Sino-American-Polarity” and not as incorrectly reported on 9 June.

EU steelmakers sell CO2 emissions permits in downturn
Some European steel producers have been selling carbon dioxide emissions permits through the European Union emissions trading scheme (ETS) during the first half of this year, because of lower output, they tell Steel Business Briefing.

Swedish mill SSAB had 1.2 million emissions rights sold on its behalf in the first quarter of 2009 for SEK 140 million (€13m). It will reveal whether it has been actively trading in the rights during Q2 in its interim financial report at the end of July. Other producers, who do not wish to be named, admit they have been active in CO2 emissions trading in H1 because of reduced capacity utilisation rates.

Russian steel industry continues to face challenges: Fitch
The Russian steel industry will continue to face challenges, including soft domestic demand and weak prices, for the remainder of this year, Fitch ratings agency says in a report sent to Steel Business Briefing. Steel output and prices are expected to remain at first quarter 2009 levels in Q2.

Although the Russian industry’s performance in Q1 improved quarter-on-quarter, it was weak on a year-on-year basis, Fitch says. At 12.9m tonnes, steel production was down 33% y-o-y, but up 11% q-o-q. Exports increased to over 50% of total shipments from 39% in Q1 2008.

EU mechanical engineering sector weathering economic storm
While the global automotive industry is going through a “once-in-a-lifetime” shift, the mechanical engineering sector, though struggling, is weathering the economic storm and will recover, Martin Ekström of consultants Applied Value believes. In Europe the two sectors are of similar importance in terms of steel demand.

Although Europe’s mechanical engineering sector is fragmented, comprising many small and medium size companies, collectively it has the largest share of world production. However, on exports it lags behind Japan, and trails the US in labour productivity and on labour costs.

Passenger car output in Poland begins downward trend
After continued increases during the first three months of this year, production of passenger vehicles in Poland has started to fall, Steel Business Briefing learns from automotive market research institute Samar.

Production of passenger cars in Poland in May 2009 decreased by 6.6% from the previous month, totaling 68,495 units, having also fallen by 7.7% in April compared to March. This signifies the continuation of a downward trend, after three months of increasing production at the beginning of the year.

roduction pruning - ArcelorMittal may resume output in Brazil
    Wednesday, 17 Jun 2009
BNAmericas reported that ArcelorMittal is observing signs of improved steel demand and therefore aims to increase Brazilian output to 80% capacity in the third quarter from 50% in Q1.

Mr Lou Schorsch CEO of the ArcelorMittal's Flat Carbon Americas division said that "Auto sales in Brazil declined in 4Q08, but in May the preliminary numbers of auto sales were up 2% versus May 2008.

Mr Schorsch at the RBC Capital Markets Global Mining and Materials Conference said that the emerging markets, including Latin America, have proven to be more resilient than developed ones in steel usage.

ArcelorMittal sold 4.55 million tonne of steel products from its Long Carbon Americas and Europe division in Q4 of 2008, while its Flat Carbon Americas branch sold 3.93 million tonne in the period.

ArcelorMittal's operations in Latin America include the ArcelorMittal Brasil subsidiary that holds numerous operations in Brazil and an asset in Argentina. The company also has operations in Mexico, Costa Rica and Venezuela.

Duferco warns of stock write-downs, low prices
The macro cycle related to the urbanization of China and India is stalled but not dead, according to Bruno Bolfo, chairman of Swiss-based steel producer and trader Duferco. “Once the banking problem is resolved and the world financial situation allows the return to a normal velocity of existing liquidity, the macro cycle will resume, and with it the good fortunes of the steel industry,” he said in a report obtained by Steel Business Briefing.

Bolfo adds that the company’s 2009 financial results will be negatively affected by inventory write-downs, increased costs per tonne of production due to reduced operating rates, and low prices due to a renewed situation of overcapacity that will stay with the industry for a while.

    European shipbuilding sees orders evaporate
Orders at Italian and other European shipyards have decreased substantially in recent months, and in the coming years seaborne traffic might decrease by 3-5%, leading Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri says.

Israel imposes $133/t 'deposit' for rebar imports
The Israeli government has introduced $133/tonne “guarantee payment” for rebar imports to the country for a temporary period of 200 days. The deposit is to be paid in case the Ministry of Industry & Trade decides to render the import duty permanent.

The market comments the decision will have immediate effect but there is still uncertainty how the decision is going to be applied, and whether it will still be paid if the current anti-dumping case against imports from Italy, Spain and Turkey is rejected, market sources tell Steel Business Briefing.
