June 5 2009 Preview of Today's Top Article Ageing population is bad news for European steel: Hatch “I am very positive about world steel, but it is hard to be positive about European steel,” Rod Beddows, chief executive of Hatch Corporate Finance, told Steel Business Briefing’s Steel Markets Europe conference in Düsseldorf this week. European consumers need to spend less and save more, he said. The savings rate in Europe has to rise to support an ageing population with growing pensions and healthcare requirements. This means less money to buy cars and other consumer goods. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES CIS billet exports are busy, price range widens Plate imports remain uncompetitive in Southern Europe Shipbuilders worldwide received no orders in May Coil prices firm, as long prices face pressure - WSR Top US mills up the ante on sheet price increases Brazil's shipbuilders to buy US$1.8bn in steel through 2015 Europe NLMK forges into production of longs with new director ArcelorMittal's Ukraine mill studies three-day working week Turkish mill raises its rebar prices Long product prices are steadier in northern Italy Voestalpine sees price recovery delayed to 2010 European stocks 'may not be reduced till September' UK sections prices weaken, but may soon revive UK car sales fall, but scrappage scheme inspires optimism ArcelorMittal develops pre-galv crash barriers Italian rebar producers increase extras Ageing population is bad news for European steel: Hatch Asia New Indian ministers plan to allocate ore to new projects Pakistan cabinet considers increasing import duties Indonesian steel mills boosting output China H-beam prices could drop, traders predict Korea pushing up HRC output as demand recovers Jiangsu province urges bigger market share of top 5 mills North America All USW workers back on job at Gary Works Harsco's MultiServ shuttering Indiana Harbor East facility Gerdau Macsteel winterizing Michigan plant US ends review of HRC duties against three Indian mills Union turns up heat over stalled Québec beam mill Samuel Son & Co sues fabricator for breach of contract AK Steel hikes electrical steel surcharge to $70/short ton Mexico's Aceros Corsa sees 35% drop in Q1 shipments US wire rod market gaining strength Latin America Brazilian auto sector reports higher output & sales Argentina's auto industry shows signs of a recovery Peruvian rebar export prices to Bolivia show a decline Balanced LatAm stocks not expected until Q3, Ternium says Colombia's Sidelpa steelworks faces forced suspension Middle East & Africa Ezz profit falls 85%, flat plant remains idle Scrap & Raw Materials Consol Energy of the US to restart Buchanan met coal mine Pig iron import prices rise in east Asia Pakistan scrap prices increase despite weak demand Ferrexpo iron ore production rose in May China rumoured close to accepting 33% iron ore price cut Stainless steel & Ferro-alloys US ending duties on Belgian stainless coiled plate Stainless plate should start recovering in Q4, says Jacquet Chinese 202, 430 prices rise on 300-series surge Chinese FeSi prices inch lower Asian stainless prices rise another $100/t on higher nickel NSSC lifts austenitic wire rod prices US stainless imports fall 4% in May Tubes & Pipes Brazil’s welded pipe prices decline 20% in April-May Açotubo is expecting a sales rebound India’s Man opposes effort to re-tender for pipeline China’s welded pipe prices remain stable China's TPCO signs pipe deal with Shell SeAH Steel commissions new pipe mill at Gunsan personalise your news

Preview of Today's Top Article EU industry may be forced to adopt new business model Generally lower inventory levels and a tighter supply chain, including more just-in-time deliveries, are among the key elements in a new business model which could well be forced on European producers by the recession, according to Brian Aranha, chief marketing officer of ArcelorMittal’s flat carbon products operations in Europe. Aranha was speaking at Steel Business Briefing’s recent Steel Markets Europe conference in Düsseldorf. Shorter pricing horizons in spot and contract markets too could be part of this new structure. Overall, Aranha envisages a more flexible and a more transparent industry in response to today’s “rapidly changing and unpredictable” markets. The industry may also have to work without credit facilities/credit insurance, he suggested. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Steelmakers oppose threatened 'monopoly' in iron ore China stunned by BHPB-Rio iron ore merger plan CIS slab prices rise on higher demand and dollar weakness Brazil restores 12-14% duties on sheet, plate and alloy bar Germany’s Salzgitter lifts strip prices by €20/tonne Chinese buying buoys scrap import prices US mill surcharges likely flat for July deliveries Europe ArcelorMittal Poland appoints new CEO ArcelorMittal Poland plant keeps medium sections mill Estar's remaining Russian assets find new investors Six German blast furnaces idled, but for how long? Preview of Today's Top Article EU steelmakers sell CO2 emissions permits in downturn Some European steel producers have been selling carbon dioxide emissions permits through the European Union emissions trading scheme (ETS) during the first half of this year, because of lower output, they tell Steel Business Briefing. Swedish mill SSAB had 1.2 million emissions rights sold on its behalf in the first quarter of 2009 for SEK 140 million (€13m). It will reveal whether it has been actively trading in the rights during Q2 in its interim financial report at the end of July. Other producers, who do not wish to be named, admit they have been active in CO2 emissions trading in H1 because of reduced capacity utilisation rates. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Strong E. Maandag 15 juni 2009 Preview of Today's Top Article EU mechanical engineering sector weathering economic storm While the global automotive industry is going through a “once-in-a-lifetime” shift, the mechanical engineering sector, though struggling, is weathering the economic storm and will recover, Martin Ekström of consultants Applied Value believes. In Europe the two sectors are of similar importance in terms of steel demand. Although Europe’s mechanical engineering sector is fragmented, comprising many small and medium size companies, collectively it has the largest share of world production. However, on exports it lags behind Japan, and trails the US in labour productivity and on labour costs. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Russian billet export market holds steady Iron ore reference price rises sharply, says The Steel Index North Europe rebar market turns down again in June Chinese domestic plate prices rise as confidence returns Billet prices are on the rise in Iran Europe Marcegaglia and Dongkuk forego exclusivity over Corus TCP Turkish local strip prices may rise this week Turkish flat exports increase in May as prices low Turkish domestic rebar prices follow export offers up Dillinger Hütte now on short-time working scheme Celsa proposes lay-offs at Barcelona plant German stockist Bepro looks further east Scandinavian rebar prices soften slightly on slow demand Turkish billet exports rose in May on MidEast buying Spain’s Alfonso Gallardo expands temporary lay-offs Mir Steel UK offloads bar mill to China Turnaround for UK plate market in sight, say traders EU mechanical engineering sector weathering economic storm UK government extends credit insurance scheme Russia’s MMK reduces losses, sells more steel Asia Kaiyuan Holdings buys Rizhao Steel subsidiaries Rebar import prices rebound in SE Asia Shagang raises mid-June domestic rebar, wire rod prices Korean domestic rebar prices weaken amid low demand China crude steel production in May second-highest ever India's new steel minister outlines policy priorities Latin America Colombian construction steel prices decline again Value of Colombian iron/steel imports drops again Colombian processor Ferrasa acquires Panamanian company Decision on Votorantim-Acesco's new HSM to be made by Sep Middle East & Africa Rebar price increase in Iran is halted Scrap & Raw Materials Vale expects to reach a deal with Chinese on 2009 benchmark Turkish mills raise scrap buying prices China ferro-chrome import prices continue to climb CAMU calls for development of China’s scrap industry Scrap prices into east Asia recover after recent softening Sesa Goa acquires more iron ore assets Wugang, Western Plains conclude magnetite venture “No speculation" declares Rizhao iron ore trade centre Stainless steel & Ferro-alloys Turkish ferro-alloy imports see some revival in April US stainless exports down 20% despite stronger sheet sales Stainless steel market picking up Tubes & Pipes Bulgarian welded pipe maker reports increased demand Global rig count continues to fall, but oil price firming DOC postpones initial CVD decision vs. Chinese OCTG

Bolfo adds that the company’s 2009 financial results will be negatively affected by inventory write-downs, increased costs per tonne of production due to reduced operating rates, and low prices due to a renewed situation of overcapacity that will stay with the industry for a while. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Saudi Arabia lifts ban on exporting rebar Most rebar and plate prices steady, says The Steel Index Sentiment drives SE Asian ship plate, cut sheet markets up N.
